Young royals at war

Young royals at war

She’s won the hearts of the adoring public but behind the scenes Kate is earning more enemies than friends..

They’ve weathered decades of scandal and whispers of in-fighting, but to the casual observer it appears the House of Windsor is finally a united and happy family unit. And it’s thanks in no small part to fresh-faced and popular Kate Middleton marrying into the monarchy. The Duchess of Cambridge, 30, has taken so well to her new royal status that she’s become the Queen’s right-hand woman and her choice of companion at royal engagements.

In private, it’s believed Kate has even been invited to call her “Grandmama”. Which is why long-time royal watchers were floored when a memo was leaked from Clarence House last week that stated Kate was to be pushed further down the pecking order, firmly below Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, who are fifth and sixth in line to the throne. Despite being the future queen, the private document states that Kate, a commoner, must curtsey to blood royals – both publicly and in private – unless her husband Prince William is present.

Insiders say it’s less about protocol and more a case of a couple of noses being put out of joint by Kate’s newfound superstar status. Beatrice and Eugenie – daughters of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson – were unceremoniously swept aside during the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations to make way for Kate. According to UK newspaper Daily Mail, “anxious” Beatrice, 23, even appealed to her cousin William, asking for “official roles” for her and her sister in the Jubilee.

When she and Eugenie, 22, were noticeably absent from the group of family members flanking their grandmother for her historic balcony wave, it was clear her plea went unnoticed. “Beatrice and Eugenie have a tough role. They don’t have the clout of senior royals like William,” respected royal expert Bill Coles tells Woman’s Day.

Raelene Boyle’s health scare

Raelene Boyle’s health scare

The Olympic legend has finally learned what’s behind her debilitating dizzy spells..

Much-loved athlete Raelene Boyle will miss her first Olympic Games in two decades to undergo lifesaving surgery this week following a major health scare. The breast and ovarian cancer survivor reveals exclusively to Woman’s Day that she has lived a heartbeat away from death for the past 12 years. “I was a walking time bomb. I could have had a stroke at any moment and yet until a few months ago, I had no idea of the black cloud I was under. It’s a very scary thing to look back on when you think of the consequences,” says Raelene, 61, who began to suffer heart-related dizzy spells – misdiagnosed as panic attacks – as far back as 2000.

“The attacks were awful, lasting up to 25 minutes, and I would go pale and black out unless I lay down – it didn’t matter if I was walking, driving, or sitting at home reading the paper. Because I’d had them so often I knew when and how to react, but sometimes it was embarrassing – once, in the middle of a walk, I had to stop and lie on the footpath, and this sweet lady stopped her car and wanted to drive me home!”

It was only last year that Raelene, who had travelled from her home on the Sunshine Coast to Adelaide for fellow Olympian Marjorie Jackson-Nelson’s 80th birthday, discovered the danger she was in. World-renowned cardiac specialist Professor Prash Sanders, at Royal Adelaide Hospital, identified the attacks as symptoms of her existing heart condition, atrial fibrillation with flutter – which she’d been told was under control after operations in 2002 and 2007.

He immediately put her on medication and recommended urgent ablation – an operation to correct the electrical impulses of her heart, after which she must remain flat on her back for three days, then recuperate for weeks.

Too cold to exercise? Michelle Bridges shares her winter work-out tips

We’re all feeling the winter chill, but is it making you run for the doona and heater instead of the gym? If so, you could be doing more damage than you think.

While the winter months are often the hardest time of the year to get motivated when it comes to losing weight, maintaining a healthy weight or even just exercising for fun, statistics show that it’s the best time of year to get moving.

A study by the NICHD Information Resource Centre in the US found that the extra weight gained over the winter period accumulates through the years and may be a major contributor to obesity later in life.

So how do you overcome the big winter chill?

Despite a recent study commissioned by Kellogg’s finding that 78 percent of Australian woman exercise less during winter and that 59 percent of woman blamed the cold weather for their lack of exercise, The Biggest Loser trainer Michelle Bridges says it’s not as hard as it seems.

“I believe winter is actually the best time to train because you can set yourself up to be looking and feeling your best for spring, and then you can enjoy summer socialising knowing that you’ve put the hard work in over the cooler months,” she says.

“Make winter training a project to help you stay motivated — set yourself some goals, rework your training regime by getting a personal trainer to help you and get some winter training outfits to keep the cold at bay.”

While we may try to keep up our winter work-outs, the reality is we can all have a bad day or a bad week, where we just can’t bring ourselves to brave the cold. So, Michelle says it’s okay to miss a work-out, but it’s important to get back into it straight away.

“The key here is consistency. Even elite athletes may miss a work-out, that’s life. What’s important is what happens afterwards. Do you then miss another, and another, because you missed just one work-out? No! Get straight back to training,” she says.

And what’s the best way to get back into it?

“Don’t let yourself get cooped up indoors. Even if the weather is miserable, make a point of getting outdoors — long walks, playing with dogs and kids. Just because it’s cold, don’t let yourself become a couch potato,” Michelle says.

Get organised: Lay everything out ready for your work-out before you go to bed. The thought of having to organise everything at the last minute will out you off working out. It’s also important to have a plan. Know exactly what workout you’re doing and what you will need for it.

Don’t hide from outside: Training outside is important during winter. Try and get out when the sun is about as it will lift your spirits.

Buddy up: If you’re feeling tired and sluggish find someone to work out with. It’s good to have someone to help motivate you and who you can motivate in return. Or even better, join a running, cycling or team fitness group in your area. Being part of a team will help you to feel more motivated.

Katie Holmes has filed for divorce from Tom Cruise after five years of marriage.

Tom, 49, said he was “deeply saddened” by his wife’s decision to end their relationship.

Katie, 33, is understood to have filed for sole custody of the couple’s six-year-old daughter Suri.

“Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest,” the actress’s lawyer Jonathan Wolfe said in a statement to People magazine.

Tom is currently in Iceland filming a new sci-fi movie, but had his spokesperson release a similar statement, expressing his concern for Suri as well as Isabella and Connor, his adopted children with Nicole Kidman.

“Katie has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children,” the statement said.

Katie filed divorce papers in New York this week citing “irreconcilable differences”. Gossip website TMZ reports Katie is asking for custody of Suri, possession of the couple’s New York home and a “suitable amount” of child support.

Katie signed a pre-nuptial agreement, but is still expected to walk away with a “sizeable” portion of Tom’s $275 million fortune.

Tom and Katie married in a lavish ceremony in an Italian castle in 2006.

Their marriage has been plagued with rumours Katie was unhappy, but cracks didn’t start to appear until this year.

The couple have not been seen together in public for three months, with Katie noticeably absent from Tom’s recent Rock of Ages premieres.

Constant arguments over Tom’s religion, Scientology, and his jet-setting lifestyle are said to have killed the couple’s romance.

It will be Tom’s third divorce. He split from his first wife Mimi Rogers in 1990 and his second wife Nicole Kidman in 2001.

Adele has announced that she is expecting her first child with boyfriend Simon Konecki.

The 24-year-old singer revealed the news on her website, saying she was “over the moon” to be pregnant.

“I’m delighted to announce that Simon and I are expecting our first child together,” Adele wrote.

“I wanted you to hear the news direct from me, obviously we’re over the moon and very excited but please respect our privacy at this precious time. Yours always, Adele xx.”

Adele has been dating Simon, 36, for one year. They made their first public appearance as a couple in January.

The singer recently told People magazine that she wanted to have three sons by the time she was 30.

“I’d better start getting on with it!” she said.

Adele announced she was taking a break from the music industry shortly after the Grammy Awards in February. She said she was planning to have four or five years off to concentrate on her relationship.

“If I am constantly working, my relationships fail,” she told US Vogue magazine.

“So at least now I can have enough time to write a happy record. And be in love and be happy.

“And then I don’t know what I’ll do. Get married. Have some kids. Plant a nice vegetable patch.”

Adoption dream ends for Australian couples

Adoption dream ends for Australian couples

The federal government has cut its inter-country adoption agreement with Ethiopia, one of the most popular programs for Australians and the only one to allow single women to adopt.

Prospective parents who have been waiting up to five years for a child were told of the closure yesterday.

Some will be able to join another program — although they will have to go to the end of the queue, adding years to their wait — while some will now be too old to adopt a child from any country.

Diane Harapin from National Adoption Awareness Week says the prospective parents are devastated. Many have spent years and thousands of dollars learning the language and visiting the country.

“It’s not just the loss of the child, it’s the loss of the whole dream,” she says. “It’s five years of counselling and commitment. It’s not like buying a puppy — you can’t just go and get another one. It’s very sad.

“Those children that have every right to live in this amazing country will never make it here. They’ll either stay in an orphanage or live in another country.”

In a statement, the Attorney-General’s Department said the Ethiopia program has become increasingly unpredictable, complex and uncertain. Applicants will get their money back, it said.

Meanwhile, the adoption program with South Korea has also slowed, with the Korean government announcing it will reduce number of inter-country adoptions.

Dolly wins inaugural Positive Body Image Award

Dolly wins inaugural Positive Body Image Award

The government’s inaugural Positive Body Image Awards were announced today with teen magazine Dolly taking out the top award.

The Minister for Youth Peter Garrett awarded the winners at an event today recognising organisations in the fashion, media and entertainment and advertising industries taking steps to promote positive body image messages to young people, in line with the Voluntary Industry Code of Conduct on Body Image.

Entrants were considered by a panel of representatives from the three industries with the selection committee chaired by Australian Women’s Weekly Editor-in-Chief Helen McCabe.

The advisory panel chose Dolly magazine as the overall winner, commending the magazine on its commitment to promoting positive body image messages to young people by presenting healthy images of young women including a non-models and a diverse range of young women in photo shoots, endorsing age-appropriate clothes, make-up and hair styling, and adhering to a self-imposed strict “retouch-free” policy.

Teen magazine Girlfriend was highly commended for its promotion of positive body image as well, with its “no retouching” policy, use of age-appropriate models, and featuring readers of all shapes, sizes and ethnicities, applauded.

Also coming in highly commended was Dove, an entrant in the advertising category with their BodyThink program, and Tasmanian modelling agency En Vogue.

By recognising some of the positive work being carried out in this area, the aim of the awards is to encourage other individuals and organisations to follow suit and commit to tackling this issue that is increasingly concerning for the young people of Australia.

Though the panel was pleased to award these organisations that are doing good work in this field, body image advisory panel head Helen McCabe said businesses still have a long way to go.

“Not enough people are actually doing work in this area for us to have the luxury of a wide choice of applicants to consider,” she said.

“By awarding these companies we hope to encourage more organisations and individuals to be active in this area and take part.”

Jessica Simpson denies Weight Watchers pressure

Jessica Simpson will marry before second baby arrives

New mum Jessica Simpson has denied claims Weight Watchers is pressuring her to get back to her pre-baby weight quickly.

Jessica, 31, signed a $4 million deal with the weight loss company to slim down after giving birth to daughter Maxwell Drew in May.

Jessica has been hitting the gym hard in the past few weeks, leading many to speculate that she was under pressure from Weight Watchers.

But the blonde beauty has rejected the claims, insisting she has been working out because it makes her feel good.

“Just so everyone knows…Weight Watchers hasn’t put ANY pressure on me,” Jessica tweeted yesterday. “I’m trying to be as healthy as I can be for myself and I feel great!”

Maxwell is Jessica’s first child with her fiancé Eric Johnson. The singer and actress says she loves being a mother and is in no rush to lose her baby weight.

“After you have your baby it’s like, ‘Oh my God, what happened to my body?’ This is not me,” Jessica told People magazine.

“It would be nice to feel comfortable, but that’s not my goal. I just want to fit into jeans.”
