We bought a zoo … then my wife died

We bought a zoo … then my wife died

Benjamin Mee with his son Milo and daughter Ella at their home, Dartmoor Zoo.

Benjamin Mee’s life has been made into a Hollywood movie starring Matt Damon — but the true story is no fairy tale. Here, Benjamin discusses what it’s really like to live at a zoo and how he coped with the devastating loss of his wife.

When Benjamin moved his young family into their very own zoo in Dartmoor, South West England, in 2006, he didn’t think life could get any better.

Four months later, his wife was dead after a short battle with an aggressive brain tumour and he was struggling to raise Milo, six, and Ella, four, in a zoo that was crumbling around them.

The park was costing more than $70,000 a month to run and needed extensive renovations before it would be able to open to visitors and start making money.

To make matters worse, the local council was coming to inspect the park in 12 weeks. If Benjamin hadn’t completed the costly renovations, the animals would have been destroyed.

“It was a catastrophe,” Benjamin tellsThe Weekly. “I felt like I’d been cut in half. I was numb, watching the world through a veil.

“But I never thought of giving up. If you give up, the whole thing was for nothing and that makes it worse.

“People had moved house to come and work there. The animals would have been destroyed immediately. The whole thing would have been for nothing.”

Despite his grief and dwindling bank balance, Benjamin persisted with the zoo. Before long, it started to repay some of the love he put into it, healing him in a way he didn’t expect.

“Living at the zoo put everything into perspective,” he says. “We had a death, which was terrible and unusual because Katherine was so young, but in that same period, one of the animals died and another was born.

“It really made you realise that life goes on. The cycle of life continues. The zoo puts all your problems into perspective because there is always some creature that needs your help.”

On a much more basic level, the zoo also helped Milo and Ella through the tragedy of losing their mother.

While Benjamin found comfort on a profound “life goes on” level, Milo and Ella simply found distraction in sharing a home with lions, tigers and bears.

Coupled with children’s natural resilience, the zoo meant the kids bounced back much quicker than Benjamin did.

It has now been five years since Katherine died, but Benjamin still thinks about her every day.

Although he says it has got easier with time, he is regularly blindsided by heartbreaking memories.

“Yesterday I put sunscreen on the kids for the first time since we all lived together in France, and it was Katherine putting it on them,” he says. “It reminded me so strongly.

“She was always the one who did that sort of stuff. She was effortlessly good at being a mother. For me, even getting them to school is too much. Do you know how many letters you have to sign? Permission slips and this and that?

“You get these flashbacks and it’s just so poignant. You just think ‘Where is she?’ I just miss her all the time.”

But while Benjamin is still struggling in his personal life, his professional one has never been better.

Dartmoor Zoological Park is flourishing, being voted the UK’s Top Wildlife Attraction in 2011.

It is drawing in more visitors than ever and is now looking to expand and introduce larger species, including elephants.

Benjamin was so moved by his experiences, he wrote a memoir entitledWe Bought a Zoowhich has now been made into a Hollywood film of the same name.

Matt Damon played Benjamin, and watching him act out scenes from his life was so strange it will stay with the zoo keeper for the rest of his life.

“I had two years to prepare for seeing the film and that still wasn’t enough,” he says. “It was just bizarre. To see Matt Damon, answering the phone ‘Benjamin Mee’. That’s my name! How is that happening?”

We Bought a Zoois now available on DVD and blu-ray.

Karise triumphs: 'I've been to hell and back'

The soulful singer has healed some old wounds and is looking forward to a bright future.

This time last year Karise Eden was living in a women’s refuge after ending a troubled relationship. “I used to sing after we fought because it was a nice release,”says Karise. “He used to say ‘Don’t sing’… he tried to push me down a bit.” Now with multiple number ones on the iTunes chart under her belt, it’s hard to imagine anyone telling Karise not to sing. “The show has helped me realise my worth,” says Karise. “I’ve had the most amazing support.”

But the scars of the past have presented plenty of challenges. “I am very introverted.Naturally I’m a thinker, so it is really hard to be in this position. I am not really good in groups and I don’t like too many people around me. I will go and sit in the corner.” She’s had more than her fair share of ups and downs in her 19 years. “When I was younger I had a lot of violent episodes and psychosis and I didn’t actually walk outside the house for a year,” she says.

But with the quiet encouragement of her coach, Seal, an inspiring Karise has truly begun the healing process. “I think he understands where I am at… both our history in life, we come from a similar place, different times but same place,” she says. “We only have to look at each other and nod in a sense and we know what’s going on with each other.” Her experience on the show has helped bring her family closer together than ever before.

“They’ve [my sister and Mum] been great — as best as we can be — it’s been good.” Ever the reluctant star, Karise confesses performing is still an incredibly emotional process for her. “When I am backstage I go through a lot of crap. One minute I am depressed, the next minute I am crying, the next minute I am happy — too happy.”

Catherine Zeta-Jones: The secret pain behind her smile

Catherine Zeta-Jones: The secret pain behind her smile

The actress’s brave facade is starting to waver as her seemingly perfect life hits another bump in the road.

For the past few weeks Catherine Zeta-Jones has done little but talk about how wonderful her life is.Whether it’s cracking jokes about husband Michael Douglas’s penchant for trying on her clothes — to get in character for a role, apparently – or waxing lyrical on the red carpet about her kids, the message is one of undiluted happiness.

But looking beyond the megawatt smile, a very different tale is beginning to emerge. While Catherine and Michael have finally put their heart-wrenching battle against his throat cancer behind them, she’s now embarking on one of the most gruelling years of her professional life. And friends say that despite her brave face, the 42-year-old is feeling the pressure like never before.

“Nobodys better than Catherine at putting on a show — it’s all those years of eight performances a week in musical theatre coming to the fore,” a long-time friend told Woman’s Day last week. “But the reality is that she’s getting close to the limit. Catherine feels immense pressure to keep the show on the road and at this rate it’s going to break her.”

With Michael, 67, clawing his way back to good health after brutal rounds of treatment for stage IV throat cancer, the Hollywood legend cannot continue churning out blockbusters the way he used to. “Now the buck stops with Catherine, who juggles the roles of raising her kids right and keeping the family business going,” confides the friend. “She’s got a crazy workload and she’s running herself ragged filming, promoting and nurturing at the same time.”

Princess Mary baby number five?

Princess Mary baby number 5?

Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik in Korea recently.

Word in Denmark is that the royal couple are expecting again.

Once again, it seems Princess Mary is radiant with a telltale glow. It’s a glow the Danish media knows all too well, because they’ve seen it on Mary before – the past three times she was pregnant. And combined with what looks suspiciously like a small baby bump, it’s enough to whip the royal press into a frenzy of speculation that she and Prince Frederik are expecting their fifth child.

Under a glaring headline “Mary and Frederik on their wedding anniversary: Ready for number 5”, Danish magazine Her&Nu described the extra special bond between the couple on their recent official visit to Korea. “Frederik often put his arm around Mary’s waist in a protective manner,” it reported. “It was almost as if she needed extra care right now. They sent each other tender glances that made one think that perhaps they share a sweet secret that cannot yet be revealed to the public.”

The baby speculation has come as a surprise to many – especially so soon after the birth of twins Josephine and Vincent in January last year, sister and brother to Christian, 6, and Isabella, 5. “Most 40-year-old mothers of four wouldn’t be ready for another pregnancy, but Mary and Frederik have space in their hearts for more children,” reports the magazine. “They love being parents and it wouldn’t be surprising if they had a fifth child.”

It’s no secret that Mary and Frederik have always talked about being parents to a “big family”, and baby number five would certainly fit in with that plan. “We feel very blessed with our four healthy, happy and lovely children,” Mary said recently, though she added that it wasn’t all a barrel of laughs.

Are Princess Mary’s wardrobe choices more proof she is expecting? Take a look in this week’s Woman’s Day on sale Monday June 18, 2012.

Judy Wade: The Prince William I know

Judy Wade: The Prince William I know

As the Duke of Cambridge turns 30 this week, royal biographer Judy Wade reflects on a life with the young prince.

The day Prince William was born will stay forever in my memory. On June 21, 1982, along with some other reporters, I was standing outside St Mary’s Hospital in London, waiting for news about the birth of a new heir to the throne. Princess Diana had been rushed into the private Lindo Wing of the hospital early that morning, and it was well after 8pm that the proud new father emerged.

Prince Charles was ecstatic. He told me his son had “sort of blondish hair and blue eyes”. When I asked how he felt about being a dad, he simply replied, “I’m over the moon.” When he returned the next day to take Diana and their son home, all I could see was a tiny face wrapped up in a lacy white shawl. But from then on I saw quite a lot of little Willie Wales.

Nine months later, his parents took him on a tour of Australia and New Zealand. I watched as they arrived at Alice Springs Airport, and we laughed when a fly landed on the baby’s head. “Oh look, his first fly,” said a grinning Charles. As a toddler, Prince William’s mischievous antics kept us, the media, busy for several years. He once tried to flush his father’s Gucci loafers down the loo and wrecked the Queen Mother’s tea party by pulling off a tablecloth complete with cups, saucers and a teapot.

I’ll never forget the day he pressed a panic button on the wall at Balmoral Castle and had police rushing there from all over Scotland! I remember when he first started school. One of Diana’s staff later told me he used to ask her, “Why are there men with cameras outside every day?” Not wanting him to know he was special, his mother replied, “They’re just there to see my new dress.”

Kim Kardashian opens up to Oprah

Kim Kardashian opens up to Oprah

Kim Kardashian has opened up to Oprah Winfrey confessing that her struggles over the past year have made her a “different person”.

In one of her most candid interviews yet, 32-year-old Kim revealed to viewers of Oprah’s Next Chapter that her whirlwind, fairytale wedding and subsequent break-up from her ex, Kris Humphries, has changed her personality dramatically.

She compared her fresh insight on life with her sister Kourtney’s experience of having a baby.

“It’s like how Kourtney had this epiphany when she had her baby and she changed into a different person,” she said. “I feel like I’ve had an epiphany over the last year for what I’ve been through and I am that changed person, just from my own experiences.”

Oprah got Kim to give up some details on her relationship with Kanye West, 35, with Kim admitting that she liked the fact that he is a few years older than her.

“I always dated five years younger. My whole thing was completely different, and now I just love that I’m with someone that’s a couple years older than me,” she said.

Oprah also asked whether the Kardashians’ success could be put down to their attractive genes.

Kim agreed that their prettiness is a factor, but said it is their unconventional beauty that is the real appeal.

“I don’t think it would have happened if we were all skinny pretty models,” she said. “I think it has to do with us, the curves, the dark hair — I think it was a combination.”

Oprah’s interview with Kim and the rest of the Kardashian clan aired on Sunday on US channel OWN.

Groom caught cheating at his wedding reception

Groom caught cheating at his wedding reception — by his father in-law

A German groom has brought about an abrupt end to his wedding when he was caught cheating with a waitress at the reception. To make matters worse, he was caught by his new father-in-law.

According to the story from Austria, which has emerged some months after the event, the pair snuck into the kitchen for a secret rendezvous just hours after the newlywed said “I do” to his bride.

The father-in-law went into the kitchen for a snack but was instead confronted by his son-in-law’s infidelity.

Austria’s Vorarlberg Online reported that the groom wanted to experience singlehood one last time before he tied the knot. His timing was obviously a bit off.

Understandably, the bride’s father called off the celebrations, turning off the music and sending everyone home without an explanation.

The bride asked for a divorce from the wedding registry on the same day, but was refused.

Under Austrian law, she had to stay with her adulterous husband for six months before they were allowed to call it quits.

The court eventually granted the divorce and the groom has now remarried — to none other than the waitress he was caught with at the wedding reception.
