Gwyneth Paltrow suffered from post-natal depression

Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed she suffered post-natal depression after the birth of her second child.

Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed she suffered post-natal depression after the birth of her second child.

The 39-year-old actress says she struggled in the months after Moses, now six, was born, but believes her suffering strengthened her bond with her son instead of damaging it.

“After Moses was born I had postpartum depression. It was a difficult time, and because of that I believe I have an extra empathy for him, and he for me,” she told US InStyle magazine.

The birth of daughter Apple in 2004 was a completely different experience.

“When Apple was born, she had the hugest blue eyes,” she said.

“I looked into them, and she was looking at me, and I felt like, you are here to teach me everything.

Despite her suffering and her age, Gwyneth has not ruled out the option of more kids.

“My brain says, ‘Oh, I think I’m done, the kids are big now and I don’t want to go back to changing diapers.’ But a part of me would love to have another.

“Of course, I’m old now!” she added.

Gwyneth also revealed her passion for acting was fading, and that she would willingly sacrifice her Hollywood career for her family.

“I haven’t starred in a movie since I was pregnant with my daughter. I can’t be away from home that long,” she said.

“Some women can do it and that’s fantastic, but I can’t. You make choices as a wife and mother, don’t you? You can’t have it all.”

Time’s breastfeeding mum slams cover image

Time's breastfeeding mum slams cover image

The controversial Time magazine cover, left, and Jamie Lynne Grumet's most recent shoot.

The breastfeeding mother who posed for Time magazine’s controversial attachment parenting cover has hit out at the publication’s portrayal of her.

Jamie Lynne Grumet, 26, was photographed standing with her hand on her hip while her three-and-a-half-year-old son Aram stood on a stool to suckle from her breast.

The confronting image was accompanied with the headline ‘Are you mom enough?’.

The cover was an instant hit, making headlines around the world, but Grumet was horrified and has now spoken out, criticising the publication and its portrayal of her.

Grumet — a mother of two from Los Angeles — says the now-famous cover shot was never meant to be published, claiming it was an “outtake” she specifically requested was not used.

“I definitely don’t agree with the cover, and I don’t agree with the article,” Grumet told US ABC News.

“My intentions were to help relieve the stigma attached to breast feeding past infancy, but the photo I saw wasn’t the one that we were trying to pose for. It made me really, really sad.”

Grumet has now posed for another cover — the current issue of Pathways to Family Wellness magazine — to display what she was hoping the Time issue would capture.

The image shows Grumet seated and breastfeeding Aram, who is now four, while her husband Brian and adopted son Samuel look on adoringly.

Grumet — who was breastfed by her own mother until she was six — is an advocate of attachment parenting, which espouses breastfeeding until the age of five, constant skin-on-skin contact and sleeping in the same bed as a child for as long as possible.

The parenting method is extremely controversial, and Grumet says she is constantly criticised but doesn’t care because she believes she is doing what’s best for her children.

“There are people who tell me they’re going to call social services on me or that it’s child molestation,” she wrote on her blog. “I really don’t think I can reason with those people.

“There seems to be a war going on between conventional parenting and attachment parenting. That’s what I want to avoid. I want everyone to be encouraging. We’re not opposing teams.

“We all need to be encouraging to each other and I don’t think we’re doing a very good job at that.”

Nigella: Thin does not mean healthy

Nigella: Thing does not mean healthy

Nigella's magazine cover and looking curvier last year

Despite her recent weight loss, Nigella Lawson does not believe being thin makes you healthy.

Appearing on the cover of a UK magazine looking thinner than ever, the 52-year-old TV cook gave a frank interview about her family, food, and her weight.

Robyn Lawley: Plus-sized and proud

The mother-of-two, famous for her kilojoule-laden recipes and voluptuous figure, admitted to having only recently discovered exercise. She also said she had reduced her alcohol intake, limiting drinking to one night a week.

Despite her healthier lifestyle, Nigella said her recent weight loss was not motivated by health concerns.

“I don’t equate thinness with healthiness as other people do, because I’ve only ever seen people get thin and then die,” she told RadioTimes.

Nigella has just finished filming her latest TV series, Nigellissima, and appeared particularly thin on the cover of the magazine.

On the issue of weight loss, she said she worried about it “only if I’m having my photograph taken. Otherwise I don’t.

“I’m always going to be someone who goes up and down,” she said.

Though Nigella’s apparent lack of concern for her health may shock some, her claims that thin does not mean healthy have been backed by US diabetes researchers in a recently discovered phenomenon dubbed ‘the obesity paradox’.

The confusing findings of a New Orleans heart and vascular institute concluded that thin to normal-weight people have a higher mortality rate than those who were moderately overweight to obese when it came to chronic diseases.

For almost 10 years scientists have been re-trialling the original 2002 study, documenting the same findings in patients with heart failure, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, high blood pressure — and now diabetes.

“People thought there was something wrong with the data. They said, ‘If obesity is bad for heart disease, how could this possibly be true?” Dr Carl Lavie, discoverer of the obesity paradox said.

Though the findings have been consistent over years of study, scientists are at a loss to explain the reasons behind it. Dr Lavie suggested that heart disease in thin people may represent a different illness than in heavier people.

It has also been suggested that genetics may be at play and treatments for certain diseases may differ between patients, with doctors prescribing more aggressive treatments to overweight people.

But dieticians warn a lower mortality rate is no motivation to let your diet go, while they may be less likely to die, overweight people are still more susceptible to heart disease and diabetes.

Adele to design plus-size Burberry collection

Adele to design plus-size Burberry collection

Like many fuller-figured women, Adele has struggled to find fashionable clothes that fit. So when luxury brand Burberry approached her to ask if she would be the face of their next collection, she issued a challenge: make clothes that fit me and maybe I’ll work with you.

Burberry’s creative director Christopher Bailey has reportedly accepted the challenge and has asked Adele to help design the label’s first ever plus-size range, according to UK Vogue.

The collection will be designed for “voluptuous customers” and feature bespoke creations, not just existing items made in larger sizes.

If it goes ahead it will be the first plus-size range from a top designer.

Adele, 24, has been a fan of Burberry for several years, wearing couture pieces to the 2011 Brit Awards and last year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

She also loved the label as a teenager, revealing she once saved for several years to buy a Burberry bag.

“I’ve met Christopher Bailey a few times,” she has said previously. “I’ve always loved Burberry. I remember saving for three years to get my first bag before I got signed.”

A spokesman for Burberry refused to confirm the rumours. Adele’s management has also declined to comment on the reported deal.

Adele is currently awaiting the birth of her first child with boyfriend Simon Konecki. The baby is believed to be due later this month.

Tears in parliament as Gillard remembers dad

Tears in parliament as Gillard remembers dad

An emotional Julia Gillard in federal parliament today

Prime Minister Julia Gillard choked back tears in parliament today in a heartfelt tribute to her late father John Gillard.

In her first appearance in federal parliament since the passing of her 83-year-old father less than two weeks ago, the Prime Minister thanked members of parliament for their kind wishes and support since his death, and praised her Dad in an emotional speech.

She spoke of her family’s humble beginnings in Wales, where Mr Gillard grew up “in a state of hardship”, leaving school at age 14 before becoming a police officer, which led to him meeting Julia’s mother Moira, then a policewoman.

“He confessed to my partner Tim, that the initial point of attraction was her black stockings,” Ms Gillard said.

She attributed her becoming Prime Minister to her father’s Labor values, and belief in the value of education that he instilled in her.

“He felt more deeply than me, in many ways, some of the personal attacks, that we face in the business of politics, but I was always able to reassure him that he had raised a daughter with sufficient strength not to let that get her down.”

Ms Gillard struggled to keep her composure as she recalled her father’s words to her.

“The last thing my father taught me was ‘in the life of a man, there is a moment to go gentle into that good night, and so it was’,” she said.

Opposition leader Tony Abbott offered sympathy and echoed praise of the Prime Minister’s father in his opening address, praising John Gillard for raising a remarkable daughter.

“This is a tragic time for her and we all feel for her at this very difficult and sad time,” he said.

“It is a remarkable parent who produces a Prime Minister of this country.”
