Kate brings hope to a terminally ill teen

Kate brings hope to a terminally ill teen

Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, has brought new hope and a smile to the face of a terminally ill teenager in Malaysia.

Zakwan Anuar, who is suffering from acute leukaemia, postponed an urgently needed blood transfusion for 24 hours so he could meet the Duchess.

Zakwan’s mother, Norizan Sulong, said he had “almost given up hope”, but quickly became “more animated than he has been for a long time” when he saw the Duchess.

“Zakwan is normally very sleepy and in pain, crying, almost giving up hope, but today, my God, it was as if the leukaemia had gone,” Norizan said.

“He is in more pain because he put off his blood transfusion and he needed a lot of painkillers, but I don’t see the need for that now. God bless her. I cannot repay that kindness.”

The visit brought a rare smile to the face of the 15-year-old, who chatted with Kate for about 15 minutes and told her she was “very pretty”.

The Duchess asked Zakwan about his treatment and told him, “You must be very, very brave. Are you in pain? You’re a brave boy. Thank you so much for coming to see me.”

Kate also told him he was “very handsome” and signed a card for his birthday, which he celebrated two days ago.

The Duchess, joined by her husband Prince William, met Zakwan while visiting Kuala Lumpur’s Hospis Malaysia, the country’s largest facility for the care of terminally ill patients. She had specifically asked to visit the hospital during their Asia Pacific tour.

She also chose to give her first official speech abroad there and spoke about how the lives of patients and their families “can be transformed” through effective palliative care.

Keith Urban quits The Voice

Keith Urban quits The Voice

Country crooner Keith Urban has revealed he will not be returning to The Voice for a second season.

“I’ve been so fortunate to have been a part of The Voice,” Keith said a statement.

“And as much as I’d love to do it again, it’s clear that the recording and promoting of a new album, a tour and other commitments will keep me from being a part of the second season.

“To everyone who sang on the show, I thank you. You’ve inspired not just me, but countless others. To everyone behind the scenes, and to my on-camera family Darren, Delta, Joel and Seal, thank you for making it so much fun. Keep watching Australia.”

Nine’s Director of Television, Michael Healy, confirmed that negotiations are currently underway with ‘superstar musicians’ to fill the coaching roles on the show in 2013. There is no word yet on whether the other three coaches, Delta Goodrem, Joel Madden and Seal, will return to the panel.

For weeks there have been rumours that 44-year-old Keith has been in talks to join the American Idol judging panel, with The Hollywood Reporter suggesting he is close to signing a contract worth $3-4 million per season.

“I would love to do it and hopefully that happens,” Keith said of the American Idol offer.

“I did get to do a similar role in Australia for The Voice, and I really enjoyed it. The thing about those shows is that mentoring aspect… it’s about passing it on.”

If Keith does join the American talent show, he will team up with confirmed judges Mariah Carey and Randy Jackson.

Babies in bikinis: Cute or inappropriate?

Jessica Simpson shared this picture of her daughter Maxwell in a bikini on a US talk show.

Jessica Simpson has come under fire for sharing a picture of her four-month-old daughter Maxwell dressed in a bikini.

The photo, which Jessica shared with viewers on a US talk show, has reignited an ongoing debate about the sexualisation of young children and has commentators outraged.

Propped up by her dad and posing in a yellow two-piece, the singer’s first daughter looks undeniably cute, but the image has also attracted a tirade of criticism.

Critics took to Twitter to express their disgust in Jessica dressing her child in an outfit designed to be sexy, labelling her irresponsible and saying the picture was “inappropriate”, “disturbing”, and “wrong”.

“Why on earth is Jessica Simpson dressing her BABY in a skimpier bikini than I would ever wear!?! Note the key word; BABY. Just disturbing!!” one critic tweeted.

“Jessica Simpson posts a photo of her four-month-old baby in a BIKINI — wrong wrong wrong” said another disturbed viewer.

This criticism has been echoed by parenting groups and experts speaking out against the sexualisation of children.

Australia Institute social researcher Dr Emma Rush is an expert on child sexualisation and was shocked to learn of baby Maxwell’s bikini shot.

“Bikinis are designed to draw attention to adult’s sexual features, in particular the breasts, which a baby doesn’t have,” she told The Weekly.

“Sadly, we live in a world where horrendous things are done to children by paedophiles, so to send a message that somehow children aren’t different from adults and suggesting that children might be part of the sexual playing field is wrong.”

She highlighted many layers of concern surrounding the picture, first pointing the finger at the businesses creating and selling inappropriate clothing for babies.

“There’s three levels to this problem. One is that bikinis are available for children that age, then there is the foolish decision of the mother to dress her daughter up that way, but more of a problem is that it’s being shared,” she said.

As to whether the image was cute was beside the point for Dr Rush.

“Of course babies are cute, but that kind of dressing up is foolish and irresponsible. It’s obviously not very thought through and sends a very mixed message.”

Obese dachshund named Obie makes US TV debut

Obese dachshund named Obie makes US TV Debut

Obie the overweight dachshund, who at his heaviest weighed 35kg, has made his TV debut in the US.

The five-year-old purebred had to be wheeled into the studio on a specially designed trolley because he is so chubby.

Obie was discovered and adopted by dog-lover Nora Vanatta, who explained that he has been placed on a “high protein, high fibre, low energy diet” in an effort to help him lose 18kg — almost half his body weight.

The pooch’s only exercise at the moment is “going from the house to the outside to go potty every day”, Nora explained.

Vet Dr Andrew Kaplan says Obie is by far the biggest dachshund he has ever seen. But luckily, obese dogs don’t suffer the same health consequences as humans.

“If you are thinking about people being that overweight, it can lead to things like heart attacks, but dogs aren’t at risk for these things for being overweight. For dogs it’s orthopaedic [injuries to the muscles, ligaments and joints] mostly,” Dr Kaplan said.

Obie is losing just under a kilo per week and is expected to live a healthy life once he sheds some weight.

Dr Kaplan says there is a pet obesity epidemic and that owners should ensure they don’t over feed their pets.

“People have good intentions and feed their dogs what they think they are supposed to feed them, but it’s the treats,” he says.

“I find it’s the treats because it’s the binge eating, just like humans.”

Woman with disease dubbed ‘ugliest woman’ by bullies

Woman with rare disease dubbed ‘ugliest woman’ by cyber bullies

She has been dubbed the ‘world’s ugliest woman’ by cruel cyber bullies, but in fact Lizzie Velazquez suffers from a condition so rare, only three other people in the world are known to have it.

Lizzie was born without adipose tissue, meaning that she has no fat throughout her body. Despite eating high-kilojoule meals every 15 minutes to stay alive, she weighs a very delicate 26kg and looks anorexic.

The 23-year-old Texas college student has been the target of bullies and cyber bullies her entire life and used to let it get to her. Now, she is taking a stand against them.

“At the end of the day, these are just words. If they are so proud, then they should show their face,” she tells Dr Drew Pinsky in a brave interview on his show Dr Drew.

While Lizzie says she has come to realise that cyber bullies are simply cowards hiding behind a computer screen, she also has to deal with people face-to-face.

“I’m starting to want to go up to these people and introduce myself or give them my card and say, ‘Hi, I’m Lizzie — Maybe you should stop staring and start learning’,” she reveals.

Lizzie has written two books about her experience. Her first Lizzie Beautiful was co-written with her mum, and her new book Be Beautiful, Be You is out September 13.

Thinking you are fat could lead to weight gain

Thinking you are fat could lead to weight gain

Believing you are fat in your teens could lead to weight gain later in life, a new study has found.

Norwegian researchers found that 60 percent of teenage girls who thought they were fat even though they weren’t went on to become overweight in their twenties.

Girls with no weight issues in their teens were half as likely (30 percent) to gain weight before their 30th birthday.

Related: Girls, 12, skipping meals because they’re too fat

Fad diets, skipping meals in an effort to slim down and the stress of constantly worrying about one’s weight are thought to be to blame for the dramatic weight gain in body-conscious teens.

“Girls in particular tend to consider themselves as overweight, even though they are not, which may lead to psychosocial stress and unhealthy weight control practices such as skipping meals,” the researchers said.

“This study demonstrates that the adolescents, classified as normal weight though perceiving themselves as overweight, have a larger weight gain into young adulthood than those who do not experience self-perceived overweight.”

Interestingly, the same was not true of boys. While 60 percent of those who felt fat as teenagers went on to become overweight, so did 50 percent of those who were happy with their body size.

Researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology examined a survey of 1200 healthy-sized teens aged 13 to 19.

The participants were asked how they felt about their weight, and whether they believed themselves to be fat.

The responses were compared with those given in a follow-up survey 11 years later.

Related: Soft drinks are ‘evil’ and should be avoided

They found that those who described themselves as “chubby” or “very fat” as teenagers were far more likely to have become overweight or obese by the time of the next survey.

The study was published in the Journal of Obesity.

Can easily be worn under a suit jacket or coat.

2. Slim Leg Pant with Contrast Trim, $39.20 from Target

Even work staples need to be reassessed now and then. Did those super-expensive trousers you bought a while back suddenly go completely out of fashion? As we all know, slim is in, so chuck out those flares and opt for more fitted pants for the office.

3. Arianne Pins, $24.95 from Leona Edmiston

A simple way to dress up any outfit is with the addition of vintage hosiery, and this micro diamond polka dot print is perfect for either the office or the client cocktail function afterwards. Pair with a pencil skirt and pumps to complete the retro-corporate look.

4. Libby Waterfall Cardigan, $169 from Saba

You don’t have to be Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada to appreciate the luxury and glamour that a stylish silk scarf can bring to any outfit. 8. City Dressing Iron Twill Jacket, $55.20 from Target

If the colour of your suit jacket is different from the pants because it’s seen one too many trips to the dry cleaners, chances are you need to grab a simple jacket for those days that don’t require a formal suit. The Iron Twill Jacket can be worn over almost anything, and can also be dressed down and coupled with jeans for a smart-casual look over the weekend.

9. Oval Bead Earrings, $19.95 from Witchery

We hear that an exciting new trend for next season is pairing bright neon coloured accessories paired with black outfits, and vice versa. What better way to instantly update your wardrobe than with a pair of these citrus bead earrings from Witchery?

10. Naru Collar Coat, $159.60 from Oxford

We often see a glam-looking Kate Middleton stepping out in military-style coats, and we’re especially enamoured with the black and gold buttons on Oxford’s Naru collar coat. The tuxedo tail front adds an extra special dimension to this very London-chic design.
