Kids, 5, know how to protect their reputations

Kids, 5, know how to protect their reputations

Five-year-olds might seem socially clueless, but they’re already busily manipulating their reputations so they seem like nicer people than they are, a new study has found.

Researchers from Yale University found that kindergarteners were more generous when they knew their actions would be seen.

“Much like the patterns of charity we see in adults, donation tendencies in children appear to be driven by the amount of information available to others about their actions,” study leader Kristin Lyn Leimgruber said.

“For both adults and children, the more others know about their actions, the more likely they are to act generously.”

Leimgruber’s team gave a group of five-year-olds stickers and told them they could share them with one of their classmates.

Some of the children could see the child they were asked to share with, while others couldn’t.

The researchers found that the kids were far more likely to share if the other child could see them.

They were also more likely to hand over some of their stickers if they were stored in a transparent box, which would clearly show how generous they had been.

Those whose stickers were hidden in an opaque box were more inclined to keep them all for themselves, as onlookers couldn’t tell how many they had given away.

The research is published in the current issue of the journal PLoS One.

Kate has hair women envy most

The Duchess of Cambridge is winning in the fashion stakes and it seems she continues to dominate the beauty stakes as well. A british survey, conducted by hair product retailer Fabriah.com, found that one in five women in the UK lust for Kate’s locks.

Her famous brunette hair, which is almost always worn out, neatly blow-dried with cascading waves, has become her best accessory. So much so that Prince Charles paid around $480 per day for his daughter-in-law to have a hairdresser travel with her during her recent trip with Prince William to South East Asia.

The survey found that Kate was closely followed by model and actress Jerry Hall, UK singer Cheryl Cole and model Kelly Brook.

All you need to know about new training trend CrossFit

All you need to know about new training trend CrossFit

Are you sick of the same old gym routine that delivers the same results? New training trend Crossfit may be just what you need. Woman’s Day’s Karen Birkemoe has taken on the challenge.

THE CHALLENGE

Every so often an exercise program arrives on the scene that everyone is talking about. CrossFit seems to be just that.

I first started hearing about it about a year ago when a couple of girls in the Woman’s Day office started complaining about their sore butts. Soon enough, those butts started shrinking, thanks to CrossFit training.

It’s described as fast, effective and fun, and even Hollywood seems to be jumping on board, with Jessica Biel using it to get in shape for her wedding to Justin Timberlake.

For the next 12 weeks I will embrace the CrossFit way of life to try to shed my unwanted kilos and get CrossFit for the new year. Here is what my challenge involves.

THE LOWDOWN

CrossFit is a high intensity strength and conditioning workout that combines short cardio elements. It was developed by an American named Greg Glassman. One of the main concepts behind CrossFit is constantly varied movements, which means every time you rock up for the work-out of the day you can expect a different workout.

This not only keeps your muscles guessing (and reacting) but also means you don’t suffer from boredom, which is a common complaint from gym workouts.

CrossFit attracts participants from all walks of life with varying ability and has won world-wide success. Each year, CrossFit Games are held in California, where the fittest men and women from around the world battle it out over three to four days of competition to be crowned the fittest on earth.

“CrossFit is a core-strength and conditioning program designed to work your body as it was intended – as a complete unit,” says Christian d’Astoli, Co-founder of CrossFit Athletic in Brookvale, Sydney.

“The workouts consist of large, functional and multi-joint movements such as pushing, pulling, squatting, lifting, throwing and jumping, which are performed at high intensity. “Our goal is to create the quintessential athlete – equal part gymnast, weightlifter, sprinter, rower and 800m runner.”

What a work-out involves

A CrossFit work-out focuses on 10 key fitness domains including:

  • Cardiovascular endurance

  • Stamina

  • Strength

  • Flexibility

  • Power

  • Speed

  • Agility

  • Balance

  • Co-ordination

  • Accuracy

THE LINGO

Like any new work out regime, CrossFit has its own unique set up. Here is what you will need to know.

WOD: Stands for Workout of the Day and that’s what it is because it literally changes every day, so expect the unexpected.

AMRAP: Stands for As Many Reps As Possible. Given a specific exercise or exercise sequence, you are expected to go as fast as you can while following correct form, and perform as many repeats as you can in a given time.

TABATA: High-intensity interval training. For example, 20 seconds skipping followed by 10 seconds of rest x however may rounds.

Chrissie Swan: I'm not ashamed of my size

One of Australia’s most loved women, Chrissie Swan, has announced she is pregnant with her third child.

The Mix FM radio host and Can of Worms host shared the good news with listeners of her breakfast show this morning.

“I’m so excited because finally something we have known in this studio for 18 weeks, I can reveal that I’m having a my third baby,” she said as cheers rang out in the studio.

The former Women’s Weekly cover girl is already mum to Leo, 3, and Kit, 1.

“I could never have imagined how much I would love those children,” Chrissie told The Weekly earlier this year.

“They are so much fun, they are so beautiful, they are the smartest, most delightful people I have ever met.

“They’re like the best holiday I’ve ever been on, or the best job you’ve ever had — kids are better than that for me.”

Chrissie and her partner Chris “the Chippie” Saville are due to welcome their third child in April next year — Chrissie is 18 weeks pregnant.

“We have been whispering in the corridors and trying to keep Mum literally the whole time,” she said.

“It’s 18 weeks, so it’s half way through.”

How the Presidency has aged Obama

When he came into office in 2009, Barack Obama was one of the youngest – and handsomest – presidents in American history.

But fast-forward four years and the stress of the job has certainly taken its toll on Obama’s youthful looks.

His jet black hair is now streaked with grey, while his face is thinner, more lined and generally careworn (though still a hunk in our books!).

These pictures trace the dramatic change in Obama’s looks from the early days of his presidency campaign to now.

Still young: Shortly after his election victory in January 2009.

By October 2009 he was starting to look tired.

In November 2010 his hair was turning silver.

His face was thinner and less healthy looking by January 2011.

By 2012, Obama’s hair was greyer than ever.

Men of The Weekly: Our favourite cover-blokes

In an historic break from time-honoured tradition, the cover of The Weekly has been given over to a bloke. Here we look over past Men of The Weekly.
Australian Women's Weekly male covers

In an historic break from time-honoured tradition, the cover of the November issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly has been given over to a bloke.

Award-winning actor, stage star and ‘sexiest man alive’ Hugh Jackman can now add cover-man to his list of achievements.

It’s been 15 years but it’s not the first time a man has fronted the magazine.

From Stuart Diver’s incredible survival story and former Prime Ministers to Kermit the Frog and even a portrait of Stalin, many men have graced our cover in the magazine’s 79-year history. Here are our favourites.

Hugh Jackman on the November 2012 cover.

Even Joseph Stalin got his own Weekly cover. 1945.

Richard Nixon made the cover in 1965 as US president-elect.

Robert Redford ‘superstar plus’ made the cover in 1976.

Kermit the Frog is one of our very favourite male cover models.

Ray Martin shared his mid-life crisis with Weekly readers in 1995.

Prince Charles seemed stunned on the cover in 1981.

The Weekly also remembered Bobby Kennedy when he was assassinated in 1968.

Mickey Mouse was also a favourite.

Santa was an obvious choice for a Christmas cover in 1975.

Hugh Jackman has graced the cover before, here in 2003 with wife Deborrah-lee Furness.

Prince Charles has covered The Weekly many times, but only once with a moustache.

The first men on the moon also made the cover in 1969.

Prince William has been a cover favourite since he was a little boy.

Popstar Pat Boone was a handsome cover choice.

John F Kennedy and family were magazine favourites in the ’60s.

In 1965 The Beatles were definitely cover-worthy.

Thredbo survivor Stuart Diver was the last lone man to feature on the cover.

Harold Holt was honoured on the cover in 1968.

Prince Phillip occasionally graced the cover without the Queen.

A young Prince Edward beat Humphrey B. Bear to the cover in May 1977.

We celebrated Graham Kennedy’s birthday with a cover shoot with his dog.

“It’s a little scary playing possibly one of the most famous women of our time,” she told Celebuzz

“There’s so much information out there that people are inevitably going to make comparisons.”

The movie, which is currently in production, saw Naomi undergo a transformation for the role, including six weeks of dialogue training, four wigs, a prosthetic nose and fittings for clothes that belonged to Diana herself.
