Men of The Weekly: Our favourite cover-blokes

In an historic break from time-honoured tradition, the cover of The Weekly has been given over to a bloke. Here we look over past Men of The Weekly.
Australian Women's Weekly male covers

In an historic break from time-honoured tradition, the cover of the November issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly has been given over to a bloke.

Award-winning actor, stage star and ‘sexiest man alive’ Hugh Jackman can now add cover-man to his list of achievements.

It’s been 15 years but it’s not the first time a man has fronted the magazine.

From Stuart Diver’s incredible survival story and former Prime Ministers to Kermit the Frog and even a portrait of Stalin, many men have graced our cover in the magazine’s 79-year history. Here are our favourites.

Hugh Jackman on the November 2012 cover.

Even Joseph Stalin got his own Weekly cover. 1945.

Richard Nixon made the cover in 1965 as US president-elect.

Robert Redford ‘superstar plus’ made the cover in 1976.

Kermit the Frog is one of our very favourite male cover models.

Ray Martin shared his mid-life crisis with Weekly readers in 1995.

Prince Charles seemed stunned on the cover in 1981.

The Weekly also remembered Bobby Kennedy when he was assassinated in 1968.

Mickey Mouse was also a favourite.

Santa was an obvious choice for a Christmas cover in 1975.

Hugh Jackman has graced the cover before, here in 2003 with wife Deborrah-lee Furness.

Prince Charles has covered The Weekly many times, but only once with a moustache.

The first men on the moon also made the cover in 1969.

Prince William has been a cover favourite since he was a little boy.

Popstar Pat Boone was a handsome cover choice.

John F Kennedy and family were magazine favourites in the ’60s.

In 1965 The Beatles were definitely cover-worthy.

Thredbo survivor Stuart Diver was the last lone man to feature on the cover.

Harold Holt was honoured on the cover in 1968.

Prince Phillip occasionally graced the cover without the Queen.

A young Prince Edward beat Humphrey B. Bear to the cover in May 1977.

We celebrated Graham Kennedy’s birthday with a cover shoot with his dog.

Summer style: What to add to your wardrobe

Summer style: What to add to your wardrobe

All dresses available at Portmans in Westfield Centres nationally.

It’s time to style yourself for summer, which means swimwear, a summery frock and the right sunglasses.

Westfiled stylist Donny Galella talks us through what you need in your wardrobe this summer and how to get value out of each piece.

What are the top trends this season?

In short, tribal prints, floral and pastels. Donny says each has been a stand-out on the international runways and they are versatile enough for real women to wear whatever their shape, size, personality or budget.

“The celebs are loving these trends! If I had to choose one key piece from each I couldn’t go past the cute A-line tribal print dress from Cue (a Westfield exclusive), a floral print blazer or blouse from Sheike and a pair of pastel jeans from Cotton On. All are on trend, on budget,” he said.

What are the top five accessories to update your wardrobe this season?

  • A cute pair of cat-eye style sunglasses such the Vogue sunglasses by Sunglass Hut, a Westfield exclusive.

  • A tribal inspired statement necklace. Diva and Accessorize have great selections.

  • A pair of statement heels – try Wittner or Payless Shoes for an on-trend range for less.

  • A wide brim floppy hat – something you can wear with your cossie or dress up with a summery frock.

  • A floral or tribal print scarf is a great way to add that extra something to your look and keep you on trend.

What are your top tips for choosing the right swimwear?

Donny says the most important thing to think about when buying swimwear is to look for a style that suits your shape.

“If you’re self-conscious about your lower half then draw attention to the top half,” he says.

“Opt for a black bikini bottom and a bright coloured or print bikini top, this will ensure your upper body is the focus.”

Donny also suggests that those women concerned about their tummy should choose a one-piece with ruching or gathering across the mid-section.

What are the best season buys for a stay-at-home mum versus working mum to update their wardrobe this season?

Stay-at-home mum

  • A cute summery dress from Just Jeans or Jeanswest. Add some flats from Rubi Shoes and you will live in this dress all summer.

  • A pair of pastel coloured jeans.

  • A versatile print top. Look for a top with capped sleeves and made from a comfy stretch fabric.

Working mum

  • A structured dress from Cue or Portmans. Wear it for work with a blazer or wear with heels for a night-time outfit.

  • A pastel blazer which can be worn nine to five and with jeans on the weekend.

  • A statement bag.

What are your tips for women looking to update their look on a budget?

Donny says it is possible to be on-trend on a budget.

“There are so many brands and retailers offering the latest looks for less – it’s just knowing where to start,” he says.

“No matter your spend, anyone can participate in the free Westfield Style Workshops and 20-minute Style Sessions which have a focus on dressing for your shape, personality, complexion and budget.”

Terry Biviano’s race day style

Terry Biviano’s race day style

Italian-Australian shoe designer Terry Biviano has been to her fair share of events, but race day is certainly one of her favourites.

She talks us through what makes the perfect race day outfit, what she never leaves home without and, of course, what shoes you should be wearing this race season.

What are your race day essentials from top to toe?

My essentials are a fabulous hat, a great manicure and pedicure that matches my lipstick colour and, most of all, fantastic yet comfortable shoes.

What are the stand-out colours to be seen at this year’s spring racing carnival?

This year, really anything goes. You can be seen in anything from bright primary colours, fuchsia pinks, cobalt blue and orange, to sorbet colours lilac, ice-blue or nude.

What makes the perfect race day shoe. For you is it about comfort or style?

The shoe needs to be stylish to complement and complete your outfit, yet comfortable. If you aren’t comfortable you will have sore feet and won’t enjoy your day – and it is a very long day.

If hats aren’t your thing, how can you compensate in style?

You could always go for a hair accessory, a head band, fancy hair clip, a flower or even a turban.

What three things do you make sure you carry in your bag on race day?

I always carry lipstick, my make-up compact for touch-ups, and perfume.

Kelsey Grammer takes three-month-old daughter to Playboy party

Kelsey Grammer

Kelsey Grammer has provoked a barrage of criticism by taking his three-month-old daughter to a Halloween party at Los Angeles’ notorious Playboy Mansion on the weekend.

Kelsey, 57, and his wife Kayte, 32, arrived at Hugh Hefner’s annual bash with baby Faith in tow.

They reportedly partied until the early hours of the morning, leaving the newborn to sleep in her bassinette at a table next to socialite and party girl Paris Hilton.

The baby’s presence raised eyebrows all round, with one Playboy Playmate tweeting: “Why the hell does Kelsey Grammer have a newborn baby at the Mansion party?”

Kelsey’s ex-wife Camille Grammer — who has two children with the actor — was similarly horrified, tweeting: “Oh my God, this cannot be true!”

Kelsey’s spokesman has played down the incident, saying the actor didn’t stay at the party long and insisting the music wasn’t loud when Faith was present.

“I am not sure why this is a story,” the spokesman told the Mail Online. “People have taken their infant children out with them since the beginning of time. They didn’t stay long, and left before it got too noisy.”

Kelsey has been criticised for not acting his age in recent months. He married Kayte, who is 25 years his junior, last year, and is frequently photographed sporting fake tan and youthful clothes.

He and Kayte welcomed baby Faith in July. They were expecting twins, but the other baby died in the womb.

It looks like things are getting serious between new couple Kris Smith and model Maddy King.

The pair, who were first spotted locking lips back in September, are spending more and more time together, with Kris frequently visiting Sydney where Maddy is based.

Kris, who split from Dannii Minogue five months before he began dating Maddy, was spotted on a date with the Aussie plus-sized model on Saturday night at Spice I Am restaurant in Darlinghurst. The two were spotted again on Sunday morning heading to the gym together.

“They’ve kept things very quiet but it’s much more than what you think,” a source told the Daily Telegraph.

Kris, who has a two-year-old son with Dannii, wanted to keep the relationship under wraps because he didn’t want to hurt her.

“Kris loves his little boy and will always respect Dannii as Ethan’s mum,” a source told Woman’s Day in September.

“The last thing he wants to do is rock the boat with his ex or Ethan. He knows everyone is watching his every move.

“It wasn’t easy being Mr Dannii Minogue in Melbourne and it’s not a whole lot easier being the ex-Mr Minogue, anywhere.”

Dannii and Kris continue to regularly see each other for the sake of their son.

The secret former life of Brynne

The secret former life of Brynne

Before she led a bedazzled life, Brynne Edelsten was a small-town party girl with dreams of superstardom. Woman’s Day reporter Henry Meller investigates her colourful past.

She’s famous for her outrageous outfits, reality TV series and cashed-up husband – but before Brynne Edelsten found her rich-list Romeo in hubby Geoffrey, she led a very different existence. Woman’s Day travelled to Scottsdale in the US state of Arizona – a place Brynne once called home – and has discovered that the small-town girl came from humble beginnings.

Former colleague and one-time lover Eddie “Spaghetti” Carlee reveals Brynne made a living dancing in clubs including Skin Cabaret. “I was the one who got her into stripping,” Eddie tells Woman’s Day.

“I first met her at a club called the Cat Eye Lounge. I was a bartender there and I got to know her. Then I started bartending at Skin Cabaret, and if you recruited girls you got money, so I asked her if she’d come and do it. I was in love with her – even though we only had sex once, I was in love with her. But she wanted to find a rich guy who would marry her.”

Geoffrey Edelsten is not the first rich man to sweep Brynne, now 29, off her feet. “For a while she dated a rich guy here named Eric Crown but it didn’t work out,” Eddie says. Another Arizona local and former love, Clayton Chase, agrees. “This multi-millionaire was paying her bills for a while and they were kind of dating,” he says. “She said he was her sugar daddy.”

Russell and Meg: Old flames reunite

Russell and Meg: Old flames reunite

Russell and Meg when they were together and today.

The newly separated actor is cheered by a surprise call from his old Hollywood flame.

Back in 2000, Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe’s scandalous affair – which was widely blamed for her break-up with husband Dennis Quaid – was the showbiz story of the year. And now it seems the actress and newly single Russell, 48, could be heading for a surprise take two.

Woman’s Day can reveal that Meg, 50, contacted her ex just days after he announced his separation from Danielle Spencer, and with both stars working on projects in New York, the time has never been riper for them to reconnect.

“Meg has definitely contacted Russell, if only to strike up a professional union. She’s directing and exec-producing a film she thinks he’d be perfect to star in,” a source close to Russell tells us. “But I’m sure she’d like more. He would too.”

Meg has admitted she was head-over-heels for Russell, with whom she co-starred in Proof Of Life. “I was crazy about him!” she told Hello! magazine in 2008. The feeling was entirely mutual, it seemed, with a friend once telling People magazine, “Russell wanted to marry Meg and have kids with her.” And according to our source they were perfect for each other.
