Get bikini ready fast

Get bikini ready fast

The summer might have been a bit slow to get-going this year, but as the weather hots-up, so should you! Get ready for swimsuit season with these simple beauty and health tips that will have you bikini-ready in a flash!

Kick start your metabolism in the morning by drinking a glass of water with the juice of half a lemon squeezed into it. If this is too bitter, add a teaspoon of honey.

Eat lots of fresh fruit and veggies, which should form at least 50 per cent of your meal. Stick to lean meat, white fish and pulses, which contain amino acids to combat fluid retention.

Incorporate cellulite-fighting foods such as berries (blueberries, cranberries etc.) and citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruit). These foods contain anti-oxidants which help eliminate cellulite-causing toxins, and are rich in Vitamin C to build collagen in the skin.

Stay away from fatty and processed foods which contain a lot of salt and preservatives and make you retain water. Graze on small portions throughout the day, making sure to eat every two hours until 6pm, but avoid eating after this time.

Drink plenty of water (6-8 glasses a day) to flush out excess toxins. Avoid soft drinks which will make you bloat, and definitely steer clear of alcohol: the fastest way to make you gain weight in all the wrong places – it’s called a ‘beer belly’ for a reason!

Help lift and smooth out lumps and bumps by exercising every day. Start with some gentle cardio such as walking or swimming for 20 minutes, and aim to attend a Pilates class a couple of times a week to firm up those bellies, buttocks and thighs.

At home and at work, add easy exercises into your daily routine. The aim is to keep moving as much as possible, as you can burn off calories even with sedentary exercise. Some suggestions are:

  • Taking the stairs instead of the lift, or walk up the escalator

  • Jumping off the bus a few stops before your destination

  • Doing some squats or lunges in front of the television

  • Tensing your bum muscles while sitting at your desk.

Make sure you pay attention to the small details. A week of strict diet and exercise can go completely unnoticed if someone points out your prickly legs and flaky nail polish!

Wax your legs a couple of days before hitting the beach, or if you prefer, stay with shaving. Use a soothing lotion afterward to avoid red, goose-pimply skin.

Exfoliate your body thoroughly using a loofah to get rid of dead skin cells and brighten the appearance of your skin. This will also help prevent in-grown hairs.

Don’t rely on cooking yourself in the sun to get a tan – there are plenty of quality fake tans available that will have you looking sun-kissed after a simple application. The tinted moisturisers such as Garnier Summerbody Moisturising Lotion are the best option, allowing you to build up colour with each application – don’t reapply more than once a day and if you’re pale skinned don’t go for the ‘dark’ or ‘deep’ shades!

You don’t need to get a professional pedicure to fix-up your feet, but don’t think no-one will notice if you fail to give them a bit of TLC before hitting the beach.

Pay attention to unsightly dry skin, especially on your heels which can easily be removed with an emery board or pumice stone and don’t forget give your toes a fresh polish, making sure you seal the colour with a shiny top coat. Bright colours set-off a golden glow beautifully!

Skin and body care are just as important while at the beach as at home. Protect yourself with sunscreen (at least SPF 30) before you go, and make you have the bottle handy to reapply throughout the day. The aim is to get that sun-kissed golden glow, not skin damage!

Avoid wearing full make-up to the beach – it will most likely come off in the surf anyway, and could result in a blotchy face tan! Minimise your make-up, but maximise the natural beach beauty-look by simply donning some waterproof mascara and protective lip balm.

Shelley Craft: I’m as average as it gets

Shelley Craft: I'm as average as it gets

Shelley Craft. Photography by Alana Landsberry. Styling by Mattie Cronan.

After 18 years in the notoriously fickle television industry, Shelley Craft’s star still seems to be on the rise — a fact that has her whole family thoroughly puzzled.

Her brother jokes about her success constantly, and ever her mother didn’t see her daughter’s TV career coming. Many years ago, when a psychic predicted that one of Sally’s kids would become a household name, she assumed the mystic was talking about Shelley’s ballet-dancing older sister.

Related: Natalie Barr – ‘I thought I’d never walk again’

Shelley herself is equally bemused by her enduring appeal.

“It’s being confident with who you are, flaws and all,” she tells the December issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly.

“I find it very comfortable being me. I’m not the tallest, I’m not the prettiest, I’m not the smartest, but I’m happy with who I am … I’m just average. I’m as average as it gets.”

Maybe, but no one lasts that long on TV if they haven’t got the goods. Ever since Shelley’s first appearance as an effervescent 18-year-old — wearing an ice-cream bucket on her head for a Saturday Disney piece on magpie-bombing season — her personality has been her stock in trade.

It’s as simple, and as complex, as that. Viewers like her and, on TV, likability is king.

Shelley has won fans with her girl-next-door warmth and bubbly good humour, but motherhood, she says, has finally given her permission to grow up.

“Milla allowed me to take myself a little bit more seriously,” says 36-year-old Shelley. “It’s funny, I’ve probably had more success in my commercial career as a mum, and maybe that’s what I am now. I’m not an actress and I’m not a journalist; I’m a mum.”

Managing her career as well as two kids is exhausting and logistically tricky, but Shelley may well be working on a new addition to the family by next Christmas.

“Four’s a pretty good number,” she says, “so we’ll see if we get that far.”

We refused to give up our beautiful baby with Down syndrome

We refused to give up our beautiful boy

Kevin, Shirley and Iain Orr. Photography by Pip Blackwood. Styling by Stav Hortis.

Over 40 years ago, Kevin and Shirley Orr defied doctors and kept their baby with Down syndrome. Now, the caring roles have reversed and the real dilemma is this — what happens when Mum and Dad die?

Kevin Orr remembers well the joy running through the house the first day he brought his newborn son, Iain, home from the hospital.

It was 42 years ago, back in a time when children born with Down syndrome were routinely removed from their parents’ care.

In pictures: The beautiful faces of Down syndrome

“We were told it was best to send him to an institution,” recalls the 85-year-old Kevin.

“It would have been awful. I certainly can’t imagine my life without him. Looking back, he may have been the one thing that’s kept our family together.”

We’re sitting in the large family home in Blakehurst, in Sydney’s southern suburbs, that Kevin, a retired surgeon, shares with Iain.

It used to be filled with the noise of five children and was lovingly tended by Kevin’s wife and Iain’s mother, Shirley.

The children have all grown up and moved out and, in the last couple of years, dementia has forced Shirley to move into a nursing home.

The house was once Kevin’s domain, but he has since ceded control to Iain. The man whose stubborn determination to go against the prevailing medical wisdom of the time and raise his son has now come to rely on him. The carer has become the cared for.

“He insists on getting me ready for bed at night,” says Kevin, cataloguing his son’s capabilities.

“Iain’s very good at getting me a cup of tea and when we have a microwave meal, he puts mine in and gives it to me. He insists on doing that.”

“Because he always puts it in for three minutes,” interjects Iain. “And three minutes is too extreme. It’s smoking!”

When Iain was born and diagnosed with Down syndrome, Shirley wasn’t allowed to feed him. Doctors insisted that no contact be made between mother and child within the first few weeks and the family were advised to send Iain to an institution.

Yet, for the Orrs, their son wasn’t just disabled or handicapped, he was their beautiful boy deserving more than an institution to grow up in.

“We weren’t going to give up,” recalls Kevin. “He was going to be as good as he could be. We were quite determined.”

And so, as the years have progressed and thanks to the love and patience of his parents, Iain has forged a relatively independent life.

“In some ways, you could say it’s not really the best thing for a disabled person to stay at home and be bound from having their own life, but they’re definitely a close threesome,” says Iain’s eldest sister, Sandra, of her brother and parents.

Yet while the three of them maintain a close relationship, with Shirley visiting regularly, Kevin is well aware that Iain may soon be on his own. And it’s a thought that preoccupies him.

“Of course, you have concerns. He’s lived in this house his entire life, always with family, but I know he’ll be okay in the end. He’s quite incredible,” says Kevin.

“Iain doesn’t want to move from here and I don’t want the house to be sold. But it’s a big house for one person and Iain couldn’t live here on his own.”

With four siblings, 15 nieces and nephews and four great-nieces and nephews, Kevin knows Iain won’t be alone — but hopes one of his siblings will move in.

Meanwhile, though, the pair of them muddle along in their way, growing old together, their bond becoming greater with every week that passes.

When Shirley was still living at home and as dementia took hold, she was prone to mood swings, often lashing out at her husband. Iain, described by his family as a serial “mummy’s boy”, often sided with her.

Yet when the coast was clear and his mother was tucked in bed, the “mummy’s boy” would cuddle his father and softly say, “You understand”. And Kevin did.

Fit in fitness this Christmas

This month we asked sports medicine expert Dr George Janko, McKinnon Sports Medicine for his team’s top lifestyle and fitness tips for surviving this silly season.

  • Increase that training – whatever it may be.Let’s up the ante! Push harder, faster, stronger, and longer! Do something each day even if only a brisk walk. Remember getting a bit of a sweat up is the thing.

  • Get enough sleep.Australians are sleep deprived and during the silly season, more so then ever. So sleep your way to the top and make it a pact to get an extra hour sleep a night whenever you can fit it in.

  • Watch what you eatand try to get back to your normal weight before all the grog and food to come. Remember less fat, fewer takeaways (except for salads without mayo), and when you eat out ask for sauces on the side (usually that will mean fewer kilojoules).

  • A bottle of white, a bottle of red, maybe a bottle of rose instead. For those who don’t remember this Billy Joel song remember that while alcohol has some anti-oxidant qualities, too much is not too good. Try to have at least three alcohol free days and keep the other days for up to four standard drinks per day only for men and two standard drinks for women.

  • Get a massageto take time out for yourself. We all get a bit tired before the Christmas break arrives and a massage is a great way to revive your energy.

  • Look after you biomechanics.A new pair of runners might be a great X-mas present. Now is the time to drop some hints. Remember the most important thing about runners is the “last”. This is the way the sole is attached to the upper. The shoe should not twist or bend in the mid foot. It should only bend in the toe region.

  • Remember that life is a team sport.Make time for all those important people in your life. It is they who give your life meaning.

  • Lastly, remember those New Year resolutions could start now!Give yourself a head start — why wait to the 1st of January?

Your say: How do you keep healthy over the festive season?

Bachelors of Australia rejoice! Elle ‘The Body’ Macpherson is single again after splitting from her banker boyfriend.

Elle, 49, has reportedly ended her seven-month relationship with Roger Jenkins, 57, — who is rumoured to be worth more than $450 million — because he did not share her love of London.

The Aussie supermodel lives in the English capital with her two sons Arpad, 14, and Aurelius, nine, while Jenkins splits his time between California, the Middle East and Brazil.

“Roger was reluctant to spend more time in London, which led to the end of their relationship,” an insider told the UK’s Daily Mail.

“They’re still friends but the romance fizzled out pretty quickly.”

Elle has been unlucky in love. She married US Elle creative director Gilles Bensimon when she was just 21, but they divorced three years later in 1989.

In 1995, she got engaged to financier Arpad Busson, the father of her children, but they split in 2005.

Since then she has dated several bankers and businessmen, but none of the relationships has worked out.

A date with Nemo: Sick Chloe is granted her wish

A date with Nemo: Sick Chloe is granted her wish

Nine-year-old Chloe has not had an easy start to life. Diagnosed with Herpes Encephalitis, a degenerative brain disease, at just 20 months old, the young sister of seven was given only a 50 per cent chance of survival.

The illness, more commonly known as ‘cold sores on the brain’ destroys brain cells and as a result severely impacts motor skills – meaning that Chloe had to learn how to walk, talk and eat all over again.

With ongoing treatment essential, Chloe has spent much of her life in and out of hospital, as doctors do all they can to prevent the virus from reoccurring. Although it’s unlikely to come back, there are no guarantees.

“Developmental delay often causes Chloe to become frustrated as she desperately wants to be included with her seven brothers and sisters and finds it difficult to make friends at school,” says Chloe’s mum Helen.

Chloe has always loved the ocean and been fascinated by fish and sealife, so her family have for years dreamt of taking her away to a place she can meet her favourite Disney character, Nemo. With a family of eight however, a holiday of that expense was always more of a pipe dream.

That was until The Starlight Children’s Foundation made the dream of a trip to the Great Barrier Reef a reality. Through the foundation’s Wishgranting program, Chloe was given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal to tropical fish, turtles and coral reef.

“Chloe’s whole personality came alive with the thought of being granted a special wish,” says Helen.

“We as a family cannot express enough gratitude to The Starlight Children’s Foundation and all that they do, in and outside hospitals.”

Give your support

In support of The Starlight Children’s Foundation, celebrities such as Amanda Keller, Natarsha Belling, Magdalena Roze and Matt Doran will tonight battle it out on live TV to sell as many products as possible to the viewing audience.

The Celebrity Challenge, which will be hosted on Television Shopping Network’s Freeview Channel 14, from 7.30 to 9.30 pm on Monday 19th November, is hoping to raise up to $100,000 for the charity.

“We encourage as many people as possible to watch the program on Monday night, back their favourite celebrity and buy the products to help us reach our goal for the The Starlight Children’s Foundation,” said Erin Davis, the Online and PR Manager at the network.

Kim Kardashian receives a royal snub

Kim Kardashian receives a royal snub!

A future queen of England and a US reality TV star were perhaps never going to be the best of pals, but recent events may have settled that once and for all.

Bootylicious Kim Kardashian is reported to have sent the Duchess of Cambridge a huge package of free clothing from her new fashion label when recently over in the UK, only to have the clothes sent straight back to sender.

According to The Examiner, Kate graciously declined the gift, returning them immediately to the famous TV star. The clothing range, which consists largely of leopard-skin prints, gold sequins and figure-hugging silhouettes, was certainly not in keeping with the princess’ usual elegant style – nor perhaps appropriate for the future monarch.

“Kate is hardly going to turn up for an event with the Queen in a cheap miniskirt or gold sequined jacket,” a palace insider told the magazine.

Sources say that Kim has been itching to befriend the royal brunette for a while, and even recently invited Kate over for tea. In an interview with Now Magazine, Kim revealed she was a huge fan of the Duchess’ style.

“Kate seems like a really sweet person… We love her sense of fashion. She could wear our looks and team it with one of our hats.”

Certainly a friendship between the pair would have been a perfect way to raise the profile of the Kardashians in the UK, and the Kardashian Kollection brand which was launched earlier this year.

A representative of Kate, however, told the Daily Mail that “the policy of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge is not to accept any unsolicited gifts unless the sender is known personally to His or Her Royal Highness. Any such gifts are returned to the sender with thanks and an explanation of Their Royal Highnesses’ policy.”

Dieter Brummer and Melissa George’s 20 year feud

Dieter and Melissa's 20 year feud

Former Home And Away star Dieter Brummer begged to be killed off so he could escape Melissa George. He tells PHIL KOCH why he hasn’t spoken to the actress in 17 years…

Dieter Brummer is still rolling around laughing after the latest rant from Melissa George, who became famous playing his lover on Home And Away. He hasn’t spoken to Melissa since he asked producers to kill off his character, Shane Parrish, 17 years ago to escape the tension and diva-like demands she made even when she was starting out.

“I think they were unnecessary and a bit ridiculous – but then that’s Mel,” Dieter says in the wake of Melissa’s recent outburst. “We may have been love interests on the show but the chemistry was far from real!” Melissa threw a tantrum and “threatened to walk off set” on The Morning Show when her Home And Away character, Angel Parrish, was mentioned last week. The US-based actress further isolated herself from her Aussie fans by lashing out after the incident.

“I don’t need credibility from my country anymore; I just need them all to be quiet. If they have nothing intelligent to say, please don’t speak to me anymore,” Melissa told Melbourne’s Herald Sun. “I’d rather be having a croissant and a little espresso in Paris or walking my French bulldog in New York City,” snapped the actress, who is dating French millionaire Jean-David Blanc.

Dieter jokes he’d probably also rather be “walking his French bulldog and enjoying a croissant” but is happy to settle for a takeaway coffee and a cuddle with Jelly, his 10-year-old fox terrier. “Mel was incredibly ambitious right from the outset,” explains Dieter, who has made a comeback in Underbelly and still works as a high-rise abseiler in between acting gigs. “I think she wanted to be the next Kylie Minogue. She was a big fan and she aspired to be a big star just like Kylie. I don’t think she had much time for the cast of Home And Away.”

Nikki Webster’s wedding! She’s a princess bride!

Nikki Webster's wedding! She's a princess bride!

The darling of the 2000 Olympics is on cloud nine after tying the knot in Sydney.

Having flown high above Sydney’s Olympic stadium with the world’s eyes upon her, Nikki Webster should be used to being the centre of attention. But in front of her family and closest friends, Nikki couldn’t have been more nervous as she walked down the aisle to wed the man she met two-and-a-half years ago on a blind date, Matthew McMah.

“Put me in front of 1000 people to perform, and I’m fine. Make me say vows and a speech and I’m a wreck,” Nikki tells Woman’s Day. “I’m also the clumsiest girl ever. I said to Dad, ‘You better hold me up in case I trip over my dress!’”Just like on that magical night 12 years ago at the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, Nikki felt like her feet never touched the ground as her dream wedding came true. Nikki, 25, and Matt, 32, spent more than 18 months planning their big day, but there was still plenty of room for the unexpected.

While Matt handed Nikki the reins to create her dream wedding, he still managed to surprise her with a fairytale grand entrance. “He got me a horse and carriage,” gushes Nikki. “It was so romantic!” “I did it because her grandmother and her mother arrived at the church on their wedding days in a horse and carriage,” explains Matt. “I thought it would be a lovely gesture, especially since her grandparents came all the way from the UK for the wedding. I looked at a few and picked the one that most looked like a princess carriage.”

Unfortunately, due to a technical hitch on the roads, Nikki wasn’t able to travel to the church in the carriage, but she still felt like royalty arriving in a Rolls Royce in her breathtaking Arushie gown she designed herself. “I felt beautiful in the dress,” says Nikki. “Like a princess. I couldn’t wait for Matt to see me in it.”

Read more, plus see all of the stunning pictures from Nikki’s wedding exclusively in this week’s Woman’s Day on sale Monday November 19, 2012.
