Pregnant in heels: Podiatrists say no

Pregnant in heels: Podiatrists say no

Pregnant celebrities taking high heel wearing to full term are sending women the wrong message.

Pregnant in heels is not just a guilty pleasure of trashy reality TV addicts, it’s a trend that’s causing growing concern among Australia’s podiatry community as well.

Taking cue from celebrities like Jessica Simpson who famously flaunted her six-inch heels for most of her pregnancy, (even joking that she wore her YSL stilettos all the way to the delivery room!) women wearing high heels throughout pregnancy could cause serious injury to themselves or their unborn child, experts warn.

“We’ve recently heard news of a bag-laden Jessica Simpson shopping in ‘sky high heels’ during her second pregnancy and other high profile women donning their heels during various stages of pregnancy. These are risky endeavours by public figures which tell other pregnant women it’s okay,” podiatrist Brenden Brown says.

“Wearing high heels at any time is an injury risk but this is significantly increased when pregnant, particularly in the later stages as you gain weight and body mass, which affects balance and puts stress on the feet and ankles.”

Brown recommends that pregnant women should go for a supportive, enclosed shoe with a slight heel.

Even Jessica Simpson gave in towards the end of her pregnancy and traded her heels for flip flops, but Brown argues the sudden swap from stilettos to flats was also foolish.

“A flip flop — or thongs as we say in Australia — gives no support to the foot and when you are carrying a heavy load, you need all the support you can get,” he says.

“Adding a pair of high heels to this mix is an absolute no-no and should be avoided,” Brown says.

Last year New South Wales paramedics reported a rise in triple-0 calls by women suffering ankle fractures, dislocated knees, head injuries and broken wrists caused by falling from their shoes, saying troublesome footwear caused more injuries to women than sports accidents.

Royal prank nurse left parting words for family

Royal prank nurse left parting words for family

The family of nurse Jacintha Saldanha

A suicide note left by the nurse who was tricked in 2DayFM’s royal prank call could shed some light on the circumstances surrounding her death.

Jacintha Saldhana, a 46-year-old mother of two, was found dead in her apartment near the King Edward VII Hospital last week.

‘We expected to be hung up on’: Radio duo opens up about prank call

It has since emerged that she left a note for her family, but the contents of the letter has not been revealed.

Mrs Saldhana was duped by a pair of Sydney radio DJs Michael Christian and Melissa Greig, into transferring a prank call in which they impersonated the Queen and Prince Charles, to the ward where the Duchess of Cambridge was being treated for acute morning sickness.

Since news of her death emerged three days later, the young radio hosts have copped much of the blame for the tragedy, and have expressed their remorse.

“There’s not a minute that goes by where we don’t think about her family and what they must be going through,” Greig told A Current Affair.

“These prank calls are made every day, on every radio station, in every country in the world and they have been for a long time and no-one could’ve imagined this to happen.”

As an investigation is underway as to who made the call to put the conversation revealing the Duchess’ medical details to air, 2DayFM’s parent company Austereo has told the hospital they will happily comply with any investigations into the incident.

“It is too early to know the full details leading to this tragic event and we are anxious to review the results of an investigation that may be made available to us or made public. We can assure you that we will be fully cooperative with all investigations,” a letter to the hospital said.

While the radio station initially pulled advertising from its airwaves following backlash over the call, they have since resumed ads and have said they will donate all profits to a memorial fund to benefit the family of Jacintha Saldanha, pledging a minimum of $500,000.

Caroline Overington: Some thoughts on the radio prank call

The 2DayFM Christmas party was also cancelled yesterday, with $13,000 that would have paid for the bar tab instead donated to charities Lifeline and Beyond Blue.

Mrs Saldhana’s family have said they are grateful for the support and messages of condolences from home and abroad, but they “miss her every moment of every day”.

A post-mortem examination and inquest will be carried out by Scotland Yard this week, where it is expected Mrs Saldanha’s death will be formally ruled a suicide.

Demi Moore dumped by toyboy

Demi Moore dumped by toyboy

Demi Moore’s 26-year-old art dealer boyfriend Vito Schnabel has called off their whirlwind romance.

The pair, who began dating in last month, were recently spotted together at the week-long Art Basel festival in Miami, where Demi has been letting her hair down and playing it up for photographers. But it seems all the attention was too much for Vito.

“Vito wasn’t too happy that Demi flew down to party at Art Basel while he was working to build his business. It was a distraction he didn’t need while all the big collectors were in town,” a source toldThe New York Post.

Just days before their split, 50-year-old Demi was photographed partying at the Chanel Beachside BBQ with partying with Lenny Kravitz and George Clooney’s girlfriend Stacy Keibler , held at Miami’s Soho Beach House.

“Vito has worked very hard to be taken seriously in the art business, and doesn’t want to be seen as somebody who dates celebrities,” says the source.

“He hated having photographers follow him around after word got out about him and Demi.”

Although Vito was also at the Chanel party, the pair avoided being photographed together.

Demi’s partying has once again worried her three young daughters.

“Rumer, Tallulah and Scout are mortified by their mother at the moment. They are becoming ever increasingly concerned about her bizarre and outlandish behaviour,” a source toldThe Examiner.

“Demi just seems absolutely desperate for attention and they fear that she isn’t in a good place mentally right now.”

Hugh Jackman’s tears for his dad

Hugh Jackman's tears for his dad

It’s not often you see Wolverine star Hugh Jackman’s softer side, but the 44-year-old broke down when talking about his father this week.

The focus of the interview with America’s 60 Minutes was Hugh’s new role in Les Miserables, but the Aussie actor couldn’t help but praise the man who raised him single-handedly.

“My father is a rock. My father is my rock. It’s where I learned everything about loyalty, dependability, being there day in, day out, no matter what,” he says in the interview.

The life lessons Chris Jackman taught his son are something Hugh and his wife Deborra-lee Furness practise in their own family. The couple are never apart for more than two weeks, and when Hugh shoots in a foreign location, he takes his family with him.

“It’s always about the family. It’s always, ‘How’s Deb?’ It’s not about work,” he says of the conversations he often has with his father.

“And I think that’s him living with probably some of his regrets. And feelings of maybe he, at the wrong time, put too much in his career.

“He doesn’t want me to make me that mistake. In his gentle way, he always reminds me this is the most important thing.”

Hugh, who is the youngest of five, also shares the very vivid memory of the day his mother left and explains the important role his dad has played in his life from that day onwards.

“I can remember the morning she left, it’s weird the things you pick up. I remember her being in a towel around her head and saying goodbye… must have been the way she said goodbye,” he reveals.

“I went off to school, when I came back, there was no-one there in the house. The next day there was a telegram from England, Mom was there. And then that was it.”

‘He’s my rock’: Hugh Jackman’s tears for dad

He's all muscles and toughness on the big screen, but Hugh Jackman broke down while discussing his father on US TV last night.
Hugh Jackman crying

He’s all muscles and toughness on the big screen, but Hugh Jackman broke down while discussing his father on US TV last night.

Hugh was being interviewed by US current affairs program 60 Minutes when talk turned to his dad, who raised the actor and his four siblings alone after their mother walked out.

“My father is a rock. My father is my rock,” Hugh said, tearing up. “It’s where I learned everything about loyalty, dependability, being there day in, day out, no matter what … It’s always about the family.”

Hugh was just eight years old when his mother moved back to England, leaving his dad and five kids in the family home in Sydney’s northern suburbs.

The actor suspects his father blames himself for the split, and thinks that is why he always tells Hugh to put wife Deborra-Lee Furness and their kids Oscar and Ava first.

“It’s always, ‘How’s Deb?’ It’s not about work,” Hugh said. “And I think that’s him living with probably some of his regrets.

“And feelings of maybe he at the wrong time put too much in his career. And he doesn’t want me to make me that mistake. In his gentle way, he always reminds me this the most important thing.”

Hugh opened up about his mother’s departure in the November issue of The Weekly.

Although he has an excellent relationship with his mother now, he admitted some parts of his childhood were hard.

“At the time, it was difficult,” he said. “One of the main things I remember is that horrible feeling that people were talking about you and looking at you because it was odd for the mother to leave.

“For many years, I thought it was not going to be forever, so I clung on to that. Up until about the age of 12 or 13, I thought Mum and Dad would get back together.

“Finally realising it wasn’t going to happen was probably the toughest time to be honest.”

Study says bullies need just as much support as victims

Study says bullies need just as much support as victims

Health professionals have warned that children labelled as bullies should receive the same emotional and psychological support as those who are bullied.

Research presented to the American Academy of Pediatrics found that children diagnosed with mental health disorders were three times more likely to be identified as bullies.

While research has been conducted into how bullying affects the mental health of a victim, there hasn’t been a great deal of study into the effects on those who bully others.

A US study of children aged between six and 17 years found that, overall, children with mental health disorders were three times more likely to bully other children.

“There is a larger story behind why children bully,” says study author Dr Frances Turcotte-Benedict, a Brown University Masters of Public Health student and a Fellow at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence.

“And part of that story may include the diagnosis of a mental health disorder.”

The study also found that children who had been diagnosed with depression were three times more likely to bully, while those with a diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), which involves frequent tantrums and revenge-seeking behaviour, were six times more likely to bully.

“These findings highlight the importance of providing psychological support not only to victims of bullying, but to bullies as well,” says Dr Turcotte-Benedict.

“In order to create successful anti-bullying prevention and intervention programs, there certainly is a need for more research to understand the relationship more thoroughl, and, especially, the risk profile of childhood bullies.”

David Bowie’s son marries girlfriend the day she is diagnosed with cancer

David Bowie's son marries girlfriend the day she is diagnosed with cancer

Duncan Jones and his wife Rodene Ronquillo after shaving their heads, and in March 2011.

David Bowie was famous for his womanising ways but his son Duncan Jones is much more of a traditional romantic.

Duncan, 41, has revealed that he married his girlfriend Rodene Ronquillo, 32, the day she was diagnosed with breast cancer last month.

“On November 4th, my beautiful fiancée @rodeneronquillo and I were frisking about in bed, as you do. I am a boob man and found … a lump,” Duncan, an award-winning film director, wrote on Twitter.

“It was a Sunday, so we had to wait to get an appointment to have the lump biopsied but by Wednesday, we had an answer. Cancer. Stage 2.

“We were a little overwhelmed by the news: cancer and presidential election day, so decided to make it a set, ran down to the courthouse and got married! So cancer, election, marriage. All on one day! Two days later, Ro was in surgery.”

Rodene had the tumours removed surgically, and will start chemotherapy this week. In preparation, she and Duncan shaved their heads and posted a picture of their new looks on Twitter.

Duncan is hopeful Rodene’s cancer was caught early enough for her to beat it, but says their story is a reminder that every woman, no matter how young she is, can be affected by the killer disease.

“I love my wife more than anyone. She’s young as can be. Women are getting breast cancer younger and younger. Women? check yourselves! And men? Touch up your loved ones. You may save the life of the person you love.”

Duncan is the son of David Bowie and his famous first wife Angie Barnett, a former model. He was named Zowie Bowie but changed his name at 18. He hasn’t spoken to his mother since he was 13, but has a good relationship with his father.

How to keep your New Year’s resolutions

How to keep your New Year's resolutions

Image: Getty, posed by models

So you’ve vowed to improve your fitness, meet The One, spring clean your lifestyle and pay off your credit card. Whatever your New Year’s resolutions, the sad truth is that come January, a vast majority will be broken.

According to Tom Connellan, author of “The 1 Percent Solution: How to Make Your Next 30 Days the Best Ever”, 25 percent of resolutions are abandoned by the first week of January.

There are many reasons why resolutions aren’t kept, but according to Connellan, three stand out.

We rely on motivation only. People believe they will find one secret trick to motivating themselves when motivation actually comes from small successes.

We only think big. People only think in large terms that are often unrealistic – like losing lots of weight or making a major life change.

We don’t realise that even positive change is uncomfortable. Change, even good change, is a break from the norm.

So to keep your resolution all year long, take note of the following tips for crafting out your life changes in 2012.

Focus on one resolution. People desperate for a life overhaul make the mistake of vowing several changes at once. Bad idea. Committing yourself to a whole list of improvements is overwhelming, and most likely, unachievable. (Can you really put in more hours at the office in hope of a promotion while spending more time with the kids? Exactly.) Pick one habit, behaviour or trait that you truly want to tweak and make it your task for 2012.

Give yourself a reasonable timeline. Resolutions like “I’m going to lose five kilos by February” are certainly admirable, but in such a limited time frame, are not likely achievable. Giving yourself a reasonable time frame, along with decent parameters, will help you keep on track. Set weekly or monthly goals and monitor your success along the way – tweaking as you go.

Don’t do it alone. Telling your friends and family about your resolution might be daunting at first, but keeping your loved ones in the loop offers two advantages: Firstly, they’ll keep you away from potential threats (your signature desert dish) and secondly, that extra bit of support from the people rooting for you, will make you try harder at achieving your goal.

Pregnant Kate suffers relapse forcing William to cancel event

No twins: William and Kate confirm baby due in July

William and Kate leaving London's King Edward VII hospital.

She said she was “feeling better” when she checked out of hospital last week, but the Duchess of Cambridge was bedridden again yesterday when her acute morning sickness returned.

Kate fell ill on Sunday morning, forcing Prince William to cancel an engagement to stay by her side.

The Duchess didn’t require further hospitalisation and is recuperating in her Kensington Palace home.

“It is well known that hyperemesis gravidarum often recurs,” a St. James Palace spokesman said.

William had been due to attend the British Military Tournament in Earl’s Court, but pulled out of the event to wait on Kate.

The previous evening, he donned a tuxedo to attend a black tie gala at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

He was in great spirits at the event, joking with onlookers about his wife’s illness.

“I don’t know why they call it morning sickness — they should call it all day and all night sickness,” William said.

“[Recovery is] a long old process but she is getting there. She feels like it is going to go on forever.”

Kate was forced to announce her pregnancy last Monday when she was hospitalised for hyperemesis gravidarum, a rare complication of pregnancy that affects less than two percent of pregnant women.

It causes constant nausea and vomiting, making it nearly impossible to eat or drink. It can last throughout the pregnancy, and even continue for several weeks after the child is born, meaning Kate is unlikely to carry out any more engagements.

We won’t be hearing much more about her condition however, as the Palace has confirmed it won’t be providing weekly updates.

“Until further notice, to allow the Duchess a degree of privacy during her pregnancy, we do not intend to offer regular condition checks or advise of routine developments,” a statement read.
