Hilarious retro exercise equipment

From a sauna suit that promises to help you “lose inches in moisture” while doing the housework to air shorts that “massage” the body into a slimmer shape, 1970s fitness equipment was vastly different to the treadmills of today.

Instead of working up a sweat jogging, 70s men and women preferred to perspire in plastic clothing while doing no physical activity at all.

When it came to exercise machines, they favoured modified sun loungers and gadgets that promised to jiggle their excess flesh away, resulting in “rapid slimming” without a diet.

The sauna suit: ‘Just slip and wear while you work or play!’

Jiggle those love handles away.

‘Take inches from the stomach with exercise or diet.’

Air shorts: ‘Great for shedding body moisture.’

Turn your session in the sun into a workout with this modified lounger.

‘Provides same stimulating exercise as expensive equipment used in health clubs.’

This early exercise bike advocated some odd positions.

Drew Barrymore: I’m not worried about baby weight

Drew Barrymore: I'm not worried about baby weight

While most celebrity mums launch themselves into a weight-loss plan not long after giving birth, Drew Barrymore isn’t one of them.

The 37-year-old first-time mum has vowed that she won’t succumb to the Hollywood pressure placed on new mothers to bounce back after having a baby.

Drew, who welcomed daughter Olive with husband Will Kopelman on September 26, told Good Housekeeping that she has never had a bikini body, so is in no hurry to lose her baby weight.

“I’m still working on it, but I’m not worrying about it,” she told the magazine.

“We live in a society where everyone’s like, ‘Look how amazing she looks two week out [from giving birth].’ I don’t want to be on that hamster wheel; that’s hell.

“I’m never going to have the kind of body that makes me excited about bikini season. I’ve never had a ‘beach body’. But I want to feel like I’m showing up and doing my best. My goal is to be nice to myself, gentle toward myself, during this process. It’s such a sacred time.”

While she is happy in her own skin, Drew says she still feels guilty when someone with a perfect figure brags about how easy it is for them.

“I think that being happy makes the biggest impact on your physical appearance,” she said.

“Of course I want to look good in clothes. And it never makes me feel good when somebody who has an insane figure tells me, ‘I eat whatever I want.’ I’m like, ‘Thank you so much for making me feel like crap’.”

Drew says that she doesn’t believe in being perfect and does what is right for her.

“I know if I eat whatever I want, I will not look amazing. So it’s all about balance for me. But I don’t want perfection; I don’t actually believe in it. What I’ve learned along the way is, work with what you have; embrace what you’ve been given. Don’t fight against it,” she said.

Their decision to sell miniature castles, plates for ‘A New Little Princess’ and ‘A New Little Prince’ has outraged commentators, who have accused the Middletons of “exploiting” their grandchild.

“It is tacky, tasteless and vulgar and from what I know of William and Kate, I would expect them to be highly embarrassed,” Michael Thornton, royal correspondent at the UK’s Daily Mail, wrote.

“It would appear the arrival of their first grandchild has been seen by Kate’s parents as a marvellous business opportunity.

“Let me be frank: this money-making ploy on the part of the already wealthy Middletons brings a shudder of distaste and unease to all those who admire their royal daughter.”

It’s not the first time the Middletons have been accused of profiting from their daughter’s royal connections.

Fifi Box: Why I’ve got no regrets

Fifi Box: Why I've got no regrets

Solo mum Fifi Box prepares to welcome her first child.

Radio host Fifi Box is busy preparing for her baby, shopping for pink accessories, setting up a bassinet in her bedroom and sharing her excitement with fans and friends on Twitter. Fifi, 36, is still coming to terms with the breakdown of her relationship with former champion ironman Grant Kenny, 49, who was recently revealed as the baby’s father, as well as the challenges of becoming a single mum.

But she is refusing to let it get her down, taking to Twitter to urge her fans “to never regret anything that made you smile”. She also posted a picture on Christmas Day of her new baby bassinet, saying, “Away in a manger … and the magic begins.” Fifi, who co-hosts a radio show on 2DayFM with Jules Lund and has appeared on Dancing With The Stars, told listeners she wanted to keep the identity of her baby daddy secret to protect his privacy.

Grant was later revealed as the dad but neither he nor Fifi have publicly confirmed it, although friends say the two are no longer in a relationship. In another tweet wishing her fans a Happy New Year, Fifi said: “Remember life is short. Forgive quickly. Love truly. Laugh uncontrollably & never regret anything that made you smile.”

Fifi spent the holiday break in Melbourne with her mum, while Grant stayed in Queensland. Grant separated from Lisa Curry, 50, in 2009 but the former golden couple and their children, Jaimi, 25, Morgan, 22, and Jett, 18, looked happy and relaxed in a photograph posted on Christmas Day.

Read more about Fifi’s excitement and baby plans in this week’s Woman’s Day on sale Monday January 7, 2013.
