Jodie Foster comes out as a lesbian in emotional speech

She's been in the spotlight for 47 years, but Jodie Foster proved we don't know everything about her yesterday, coming out as gay at the Golden Globes.
Jodie Foster comes out

She’s been in the spotlight for 47 years, but Jodie Foster proved we don’t know everything about her yesterday, coming out as gay at the Golden Globes.

The 50-year-old actress revealed her sexuality in an emotional speech after she won the Cecil B DeMille Award for lifetime achievement, leaving the audience in tears.

An obviously nervous Jodie started her speech predictably, thanking colleagues, friends and family before moving on to an altogether more unexpected topic.

“While I’m here being all confessional, I guess I just have just a sudden urge to say something that I’ve never really been able to air in public,” she said.

“[It’s] a declaration that I’m a little nervous about — but maybe not quite as nervous as my publicist right now. I’m just going to put it out there — loud and proud.

“This is not going to be a big coming out speech tonight because I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago back in the stone age.

“But seriously, if you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, if you’d had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you too might value privacy above all else.

“Privacy. Some day, in the future, people will look back and remember how beautiful it once was. I have given everything up there from the time that I was three years old.”

Jodie’s remarks earned her thunderous applause from the audience, many of whom shed tears as she spoke.

She went on to pay tribute to her former partner Cydney Bernard, and her two children Charles, 14, and Kit, 12.

“There is no way I could ever stand here without acknowledging one of the deepest loves of my life, my heroic co-parent, my ex-partner in love but righteous soul sister in life, my confessor, ski buddy, most beloved BFF of 20 years, Cydney Bernard,” she said.

“Thank you, Cyd. I am so proud of our modern family. Our amazing sons, Charlie and Kit, who are my reason to breathe and to evolve, my blood and soul. And boys, in case you didn’t know it, this song, all of this, this song is for you.”

Jodie also spoke about her mother Evelyn, 84, who is suffering from dementia.

“This brings me to the greatest influence of my life, my amazing mother, Evelyn,” she said. “Mum, I know you’re inside those blue eyes somewhere and that there are so many things that you won’t understand tonight.

“But this is the only important one to take in: I love you, I love you, I love you. And I hope that if I say this three times, it will magically and perfectly enter into your soul, fill you with grace and the joy of knowing that you did good in this life. You’re a great mom. Please take that with you when you’re finally okay to go.”

No royal twins: William and Kate confirm one baby due in July

No twins: William and Kate confirm baby due in July

William and Kate leaving London's King Edward VII hospital.

Her extreme morning sickness had many speculating the royal baby was in fact royal babies, but the Duchess of Cambridge has confirmed she is expecting just one child.

St James’s Palace released a statement on behalf of William and Kate, revealing their baby’s due date and giving an update on the mother-to-be’s health.

“Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in July,” a St James’s Palace spokesman said.

“The Duchess’s condition continues to improve since her stay in hospital last month.”

Kate, 31, is believed to be 14 weeks pregnant. She was forced to announce her pregnancy early after she was hospitalised with hyperemesis gravidarum — a rare complication of pregnancy that results in severe nausea and vomiting.

Bookmakers are taking bets on the day the baby will arrive, with the current favourite being Wednesday, July 17.

Elizabeth and Diana remain joint favourites for the new arrival’s name.

Royal baby could share birthday with Diana – or Camilla

No twins: William and Kate confirm baby due in July

The late Princess Diana and her one-time love rival Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

William and Kate have confirmed their baby is due in July, which means the tiny tot could share a birthday with one of the royal family’s most famous women — or one of its most infamous.

Both William’s mother Princess Diana and his much-maligned stepmother Camilla were born in July.

In pictures: Glowing Kate shows first sign of baby bump

Diana’s birthday was July 1, while Camilla’s is July 17.

William and Kate would no doubt love their first born to share a birthday with Diana.

William, 30, has gone to great lengths to keep his mother’s memory alive, giving her treasured engagement ring to Kate and choosing Kensington Palace — where he and his younger brother Harry lived with their mother after her split from Prince Charles — as his marital home.

But given that Kate is believed to be 14 weeks pregnant, experts say a mid-July due date is more likely, putting the new arrival closer to Camilla’s birthday than Diana’s.

William and Kate have an excellent relationship with Camilla, with the mother-to-be being particularly close to her, and are likely to be thrilled if their little one shares her birthday.

The general public however, feel entirely differently. Many people still blame Camilla for breaking up Charles and Diana’s marriage, and have refused to accept her as Charles’ wife.

Interestingly, the British public have warmed to Camilla dramatically in the past five years, now regarding her to be one of the most hard-working royals, while the Australian public seem to be finding it much harder to forgive and forget.

Despite getting a good reception when she visited Australia with Charles last November, Camilla remains unpopular with many readers, who are quick to criticise her every time a story is run.

“I have and always will think that Camilla is a wicked, ugly and self-serving, cunning person, not deserving her current ‘respected’ position,” one reader wrote on a recent Camilla story.

“What a PIG to put Diana through that,” another wrote. “I hate both Charles and the cow for what they did and Diana would be rolling in her grave today seeing her boys being chummy with her. Lucky she didn’t come to my home town when she visited Australia … I would have thrown rotten eggs at her head!”

Prince Harry beats George Clooney to sexiest man title

Prince Harry beats George Clooney to sexiest man title

Prince Harry

He’s got ginger hair and freckles, but Prince Harry’s unconventional looks have seen him leapfrog George Clooney to be named the sexiest man of 2013.

Harry, 28, has topped high-brow British magazine Town & Country’s annual bachelor list, beating more traditionally handsome hunks including Clooney.

“He’s the wild-card royal, the naughty one, the one who goes out with rah women, hangs out with a fast crowd, downs too many drinks, and goes home at the wrong moment. That’s why we all like him best,” the magazine reported.

“Harry might not possess a towering intellect but he is cooler and more appealing than his older brother, sweet as William undoubtedly is.

“Being the heir to the throne has its perks, such as getting to be king of England (not anytime soon, in William’s case, given the legendary Windsor longevity). But it is also a life sentence and a straitjacket. William has to spend the rest of his life being cautious, dutiful, and dull. Harry, free of the monarchical burden, gets to have all the fun.”

Harry beat 39 other eligible bachelors to top the list, including fellow royals Prince Carl Philip of Sweden, Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark and Prince Amedeo of Belgium.

George Clooney, twice voted People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, came in at number 33.

Palace confirms when royal baby is due

Palace confirms when royal baby is due

Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, will welcome their first child – and the world’s most eagerly anticipated baby – in July, St James’s Palace has announced.

“’Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in July,” the Palace said in a statement.

While their child is expected to arrive in mid-July, if the third in line to the British throne arrives early, he or she could share the same birthday as William’s mother Princess Diana, who was born on July 1.

Catherine, who recently turned 31, suffered a severe form of morning sickness called hyperemesis gravidarum during the early stages of her pregnancy, but now that she is 13 to 14 weeks, the worst is believed to be over.

“The Duchess’s condition continues to improve since her stay in hospital last month,” the palace confirmed.

Catherine has continued to curtail her public engagements while she recovers. Both Catherine and William will be out of the spotlight for the foreseeable future, with Kate resting as much as she can and William carrying on with his day job as a search-and-rescue pilot.
