Keith and Nicole reunited!

Now to Love

Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman looked like a pair of love-struck teenagers as they were reunited at Sydney airport this week – Nicole having just stepped off a flight from Los Angeles.

The family were clearly delighted to be back in each other’s arms, with the couple’s two young daughters leaping up to give their superstar dad a big welcome hug.

Kidman, who had been attending the Screen Actors Guild Awards in L.A., was accompanied by close friend Russell Crowe on her return home, and was seen getting a helping hand from her fellow actor with carrying the young girls to the car.

Keith is performing this week at Sydney’s Allphones Arena as part of his big Australian tour, The Story So Far.

Nicole and Keith looked over-the-moon to be reunited.

Kidman was joined by fellow star Russell Crowe on her flight back to Sydney.

There’s Daddy! Crowe carries two-year-old Faith from the airport.

Nicole and daughter Sunday Rose both looked happy to be home.

Could they be the most loved-up couple in Australia?

Keith Urban confessed to missing his wife Nicole Kidman so much he broke down in tears as he watched her on the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles earlier this week.

“I was telling Nic before that when we finally got into Sydney, I got to the house, flicked on the TV and I got to see my wife, I got to see what she was wearing,” he said yesterday.

“I hit pause on one shot and stood there staring at her… and started crying. I hated the fact she was there without me, on her own.”

The loved-up pair looked overjoyed at being reunited yesterday at Sydney airport, as Nicole touched down on home soil in time for the 2nd AACTA (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) Awards, which takes place today.

The actress will have to tear herself away from her musician husband once again to walk the red carpet, while Keith performs at Allphones Arena as part of his Australian tour, The Story So Far.

It’s been a tough and emotional week for the country music crooner, who was forced to postpone his third Brisbane concert due to the flooding emergency in Queensland.

Despite the difficulties, Keith’s latest tour looks set to be his most successful yet, thanks largely to his turn as coach on the inaugural season of The Voice.

It’s believed many of his audience on this tour are newcomers, who got to know the nice-guy musician on the ratings juggernaut last year.

Sexist? No – changing your name is the ultimate expression of feminism

For around three decades (give or take) you have your name. It’s yours: it’s the one you were given the day you entered the world, the one on your passport, your driver’s licence and all those damn online shopping sites that keep sending you pesky (yet tempting…) emails.

Oh, and it makes up your email address, too. Not to mention your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram … it’s everywhere.

Then, you take a walk down aisle, say ‘I do’ and suddenly, you have a new moniker. You’re a Mr and Mrs Someone Else.

At least, that’s the overwhelming pattern in Australia. While there’s no official statistics on the issue, it is estimated 80 to 90 percent of women take their husband’s name upon marrying.

Some describe this as sexist and outdated: a tradition symbolising ownership that should be relegated to the past.

Certainly I was one of those people. When my best friend got married I was shocked that she took on her husband’s name, as it never occurred to me that she had any reason to change her own. She later confessed it took her over a year to change all her paperwork, as she still liked seeing her maiden name in print.

Turns out her feelings are not unique. Another friend has held onto her name for business purposes, and because she had a deep devotion to her (late) father.

A third friend recently told me that while she always knew she would take her husband’s name, she was surprised at how much she missed her maiden name, and how hard she had found it to let go.

So why do it at all?

When it was my turn to get married, I struggled with the issue — debating the reasons for and against. I had always assumed I’d keep my own name, just like my Mum had before me.

Then I remembered ‘my’ name was my Dad’s anyway, so it was no less sexist keeping his name than taking my husband’s. And this was my choice: that’s the nice thing about feminism; we can do what we want.

Let’s be honest, the whole institution of marriage is sexist: from the engagement ring (originally used as a symbol of ownership); to the white dress (you’re meant to be a virgin, remember?); to a parent ‘giving’ you away (because women are owned: by their fathers, then their husbands). But, it’s the 21st century and women now have a choice.

I choose to see my engagement ring as a symbol of hope and love; my white dress as a chance to look a million bucks for one day of my life; my Mum walking me down the aisle as acknowledgement of my past.

I feel like I have the best of both worlds: a professional and a private identity. My name is not who I am, but it contributes to how I feel connected — to my family, to the wider world. It’s a personal decision, and not one that makes you an anti-feminist should you choose to stick with tradition.

Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway break down Les Miserables in ‘2013 terms’

Leading stars of the epic musical Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman took it upon themselves at this year's Screen Actors Guild Awards to provide a more pop-culture friendly translation.

Didn’t quite understand all the twists, turns, politics and drama of Les Miserables? Found it difficult to decipher the plot through all of that cry-singing?

Never fear, leading stars of the epic musical Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman took it upon themselves at this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards to provide a more pop culture-friendly translation of the historical classic as they introduced its nomination for best film.

“Wolverine is being chased by gladiator,” Hathaway begins.

“Catwoman gets knocked up and for some ungodly reason goes to see Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter and Borat,” continues Jackman.

“Then Wolverine agrees to raise Catwoman’s baby, and she grows up to star in Mamamia.”

Shortly after the video hit the internet meme-watchers were quick to point out the similarities between the stars’ punchy speech and a review of the film that’s being doing the rounds on Facebook.

“The movie starts and Wolverine is singing his guts out. Then Catwoman starts crying and singing, and it’s all very moving,” the viral version reads.

“Wolverine is on the run from the Gladiator because Catwoman had a baby at Borat’s house, but now she wants Wolverine to care for her. Time skip. A bunch of people get shot and everyone dies. Four stars.”

Regardless of where they got their inspiration, we think it’s great to see the stars not taking themselves, or the epic musical adaptation, too seriously.

As Anne Hathaway said of her and Jackman’s own performance, we think they “crushed it”.

It’s the headline Prince Charles has been dreaming of — but unfortunately for him, it refers to another long-serving European queen and her ageing heir.

Dutch Queen Beatrix, who turns 75 on Thursday, announced she was abdicating the throne in favour of her 45-year-old son Prince Willem-Alexander in a TV broadcast last night.

The monarch said her son would ascend to the throne on April 30.

She said she had been considering retiring for years, but not because she was tired of serving her country.

“It was not because the office was too heavy for me, but because the responsibility for this country should lie in the hands of a new generation,” she said.

“It is a good time to take this step which I have considered for a few years now. I am grateful for the many years that I have been allowed to be your queen.”

The announcement has fuelled debate over whether Britain’s Queen Elizabeth, 86, should follow in the footsteps of Beatrix and renounce the throne in favour of her son Charles, 64.

A recent UK poll conducted by The Times newspaper found that 75 percent of Britons thought the Queen should rule until her death, with just 25 percent thinking she should abdicate.

But even if the overwhelming majority wanted her to step aside, it is unlikely Elizabeth II would. Traditionally, UK monarchs rule until they die, while Dutch leaders, like Beatrix, always step down when they get older.

If the unthinkable happened and Queen Elizabeth did step aside, the future of the British monarchy would be uncertain.

The people are deeply divided over who they want for their next King. Around 50 per cent of people want Charles to take the throne, while the other half think Charles should pass the crown on to his son Prince William.

Charles became the longest-waiting heir in British history in 2008. He has now been waiting 64 years to ascend the throne.

He has repeatedly joked about his impatience to take the throne, last year quipping that he was afraid he will “snuff it” before he has the chance to realise his dreams.

“I’ll run out of time soon. I shall have snuffed it if I’m not careful,” he said.

His reputation in and out of the kitchen precedes him but the celebrity chef still insists he’s misunderstood.

The name Marco Pierre White is most often followed by the words “made Gordon Ramsay cry” – but there is much more to him than his notoriety as a butt-kicking super chef. No sooner had MasterChef: The Professionals debuted on Network Ten than the Twitterverse went into overdrive, with women fawning over the dapper manner of the English chef.

“Marco Pierre White is actually sexy. He has a dignified air about him,” tweeted one fan. The feeling is clearly mutual. “They’re very beautiful, very beautiful, very elegant, very kind, very polite, very graceful,” gushes Marco, 51, of Aussie ladies. Spend five minutes in his presence and it’s obvious why Marco is as famous for his rock star charisma as his culinary prowess. “He’s a charismatic bloke,” MasterChef co-host Matt Preston says. “He’s very charming and has beautiful manners, and as your mother told you, ‘If he wears good shoes and has good nails…’”

Despite Marco’s softly spoken allure, his turbulent marital history reveals a man who enjoys some heat in and out of the kitchen. His first marriage, to surgeon’s daughter Alex McArthur in 1988, lasted less than two years and produced a daughter, Letitia. “I came from a hard, working-class world, which since my mother’s death, had been dominated by men,” Marco recalled in his 2006 autobiography White Slave. “When it came to sharing my emotions, I mustn’t have been the most communicative husband.

“All of a sudden there I was, married to a nice, middle-class girl…” Two years later, Marco popped the question to 21-year-old model Lisa Butcher, three weeks after meeting her at a London nightclub. Again, the romance ended abruptly soon after it began. “I don’t remember blazing rows with Lisa,” Marco wrote in his autobiography. “It just fizzled out. Within 15 weeks we had separated.” He maintains the marriage was a mistake but Lisa was still heartbroken when they broke up on their honeymoon.

The boys who won Ellen’s heart

Dailius and Julian Wilson won talk show host Ellen DeGeneres’ heart so she gave them a gift that helped their whole family.

Armed with handmade “We Love Ellen” T-shirts, placards, passports and some basic necessities, Dailius and Julian Wilson camped overnight at the Sydney Opera House for the chance to meet their idol Ellen DeGeneres in LA. “We’ve been watching Ellen since primary school,” says Julian, 19. “She’s always enthusiastic, she is such a nice person and she’s always giving. That is probably her best attribute.”

Despite that, the Sydney brothers never expected they would be on the receiving end of “Ellen the generous”. As Julian describes it, “This is like a dream come true.” Dailius, 21, can’t wipe the smile off his face, either, saying, “It is the best thing that’s happened to us.”

It began with a cryptic tweet from Ellen, 55, in LA, telling her Aussie fans to be at the iconic Sydney landmark for a live cross from the set of her talk show, with their passports and bags in hand. Hopefuls were asked to write and perform an operatic song for Ellen and much to their surprise, the brothers’ effort caught her eye. While the grand prize went to Carly Heading, 23, and her pal Jennifer Kenyon, 21, Dailius and Julian’s amusing operatic plea put such a smile on Ellen’s face that she couldn’t resist surprising them with tickets to LA, too.

When Woman’s Day caught up with the brothers the next day, they were still pinching themselves. “It is so surreal… it still hasn’t sunk in,” Julian says. “It’s amazing.” The news couldn’t have come at a better time for their family. “Our dad [Mark] got ill about a year-and-a-half ago,” Julian reveals. “He had a brain tumour the size of a cricket ball,” Dailius adds. “It’s been hard but we’re getting through it. Our mum [Belinda] is so strong and keeps the family together.”

Bec and Lleyton Hewitt were thrilled to be back on home soil for their daughter Mia’s 7th birthday, with grandparents and cousins there to join in the fun. For Bec, the celebration was made even more special, with older sister and look-alike Kristy on hand for the laid-back family gathering.

“Bec and Kristy are incredibly close and always have been,” an insider tells Woman’s Day. “Their bond is not affected at all by Bec living overseas [in the Bahamas since 2009].” The friend adds that Kristy has long been Bec’s confidante. “She’s the closest friend Bec has – a very sweet person – and she was a dancer and singer from childhood, so they share plenty.”

In fact, says the insider, “Kristy is one reason Bec was so keen to have a third child – she wanted to give Mia a sister, the friend for life she has in her sister.” Lleyton also gets along famously with his down-to-earth sister-in-law.

“Bec’s other close friends are actresses or in the entertainment industry, [whereas with Kristy] Lleyton knows she isn’t trying to put the stars back in Bec’s eyes and take her focus away from the family. Kristy is very much a homebody like Bec and is happiest surrounded by kids.”

Growing up in a life marred by divorce and controversy, Nicole and Tom’s kids have forged a special friendship.

When they were first adopted, it seemed Isabella and Connor Cruise had hit the jackpot. As the beloved new children of movie superstars Tom Cruise and then-wife Nicole Kidman, they were destined to enjoy lives of luxury in a happy, stable home.

No-one could have predicted the reality of their lives – rocked by their parents’ divorce in 2001, thrown into the Scientology religion, cutting contact with Nicole and witnessing Tom’s doomed marriage to Katie Holmes. As Connor turned 18 last week, he and his 20-year-old sister reflected on an upbringing that has included only one constant – each other. Now, as the pair reach adulthood and slowly begin to go their separate ways, a source close to Bella tells Woman’s Day they’ve vowed to be there for one another always. Bella was eight and Connor six when Tom and Nicole split, and their father retained primary custody as part of a top-secret settlement.

In the 12 years since, the children have had limited contact with Nicole, 45. Instead, Tom, 50, installed his own mum and sisters – all devout Scientologists – to act as mother figures and home-schoolers. Then, in 2005, when Bella was 12 and Connor was 10, they watched Tom get caught up in a whirlwind romance with Katie Holmes, proposing to the younger actress and moving her into the palatial family estate. “Suddenly Tom was focusing all of his attention on Katie,” a friend of Bella’s tells Woman’s Day.

Ange’s secret love child: Why she’s hiding baby no 7

The US media believe they have cracked the secret she’s been trying so hard to hide.

One question has puzzled Hollywood since Christmas – where in the world is Angelina Jolie? As one of the most famous faces on the planet, cameras track Ange’s every move, making it virtually impossible for her to go anywhere unnoticed. Yet no-one has seen her since December 6 – and US magazine Star has a very exciting explanation for her disappearance.

In last week’s cover story, which confidently declared, “Angelina: I’m pregnant again!”, Star’s sources explain that Ange, 37, has been missing in action while coping with the first stages of her third pregnancy with partner Brad Pitt. “They’re so ecstatic to have a new addition to the family!” one source confides. The couple’s rep refused to confirm or deny the report when approached by Woman’s Day, but Ange did go to ground with her previous two pregnancies.

While carrying Shiloh, now 6, in 2006, Ange had a more than sizeable bump before she allowed herself to be caught on camera by People magazine’s photographers. Before her twins Vivienne and Knox were born in July 2008, Ange hid her big news from the world by doing a voiceover for animated movie Kung Fu Panda.

She finally revealed her twins bump on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, just two months before the birth. Insiders are wondering whether she and Brad, 49 – also parents to adopted children Maddox, 11, Pax, 9, and Zahara, 8 – will come clean on their baby news during the Hollywood awards season, with the Oscars fast approaching on February 24. It’s unlikely, claims Star’s source. “She had morning sickness and didn’t want to draw attention to herself in public,” their insider says. “She’s focusing on the other children right now, trying to prepare them for the new baby.”
