Prince Harry ‘sorry to say’ he won’t be coming to Australia

Prince Harry 'sorry to say' he won't be coming to Australia

Prince Harry in Afghanistan.

For 24 glorious hours, we dared to hope that everyone’s favourite party prince would be coming to Australia in October but regrettably, Harry has confirmed he won’t be coming Down Under this year.

Despite yesterday’s flurry of rumours that the Royal Australian Navy had snagged Harry as guest of honour at its centenary gala, the 28-year-old royal’s spokesperson has exclusively confirmed to The Weekly that Harry won’t be attending.

“I’m sorry to say that the reports about Prince Harry visiting Australia in October are not correct,” Harry’s Assistant Press Secretary said. “Sadly, he won’t be attending the gala navy celebrations.”

Government sources told the Daily Telegraph yesterday that the Navy had requested a royal visitor for the celebration and had been told Harry was the most likely to attend.

“We will achieve royal patronage but the palace will not announce the name until much closer to the event,” a defence insider said.

Harry last visited Australia in his gap year in 2003, when he spent several weeks working on a Queensland sheep station.

Aussie breakthrough in fight against dementia

Aussie breakthrough in fight against dementia

Melbourne researchers have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against Alzheimer’s.

The team from Austin Hospital can now diagnose the condition 15 years before symptoms develop, offering hope dementia might one day be avoided.

Researchers tracked the build-up of a protein called amyloid, which is created when brain membranes are replaced.

In healthy people, the amyloid breaks down and leaves the body, but in others it gradually builds up, causing dementia 30 years later.

The Australian researchers have developed a scan that can detect the build-up of amyloid 15 years before it took a toll on sufferers.

“If somebody was going to get Alzheimer’s disease at 70 years old, our study shows that process would actually start when they were 40, and by the age of 55 we would be able to pick it up on our amyloid PET scans, which show it building up in the brain,” study leader Professor Christopher Rowe told an international Alzheimer’s disease conference yesterday.

“The hope is that if we get in early and get people on these drugs it will stop the build-up and stop them experiencing dementia.”

Rowe said his team’s discovery gives drug companies something to target in their race to develop a cure to the debilitating condition. Currently, there is nothing that can be done by the time an individual starts experiencing symptoms of dementia.

The study, which involved 1000 people in Melbourne and Perth, was published in The Lancet Neurology yesterday.

Meet Russell Crowe’s new girl!

Meet Russell Crowe's new girl!

He’s “Miserables” no more thanks to a gorgeous co-star.

To say Russell Crowe’s had a tough six months would be an understatement. He was rescued by the US coastguard after getting lost on his kayak off Long Island in September. A month later, he and his wife of nine years, Danielle Spencer, separated amid claims a divorce was imminent.

In December, he endured scathing reviews and jibes for his turn as Javert in the big-screen adaptation of Les Miserables. And earlier this year he quit Twitter after being bullied online. But things may be looking up for the burly actor, who has two sons, Charles, 9, and Tennyson, 6, with Danielle.

Insiders say Russell has found love again with his Les Miserables co-star Samantha Barks (who plays Eponine). The 26-year age gap – Russell is 48, Samantha just 22 – has raised eyebrows in showbiz circles. Russell dropped the first hint things were heating up the night before the Oscars, when the pair, along with the rest of the Les Mis cast, rehearsed a number for the awards show.

“Next up… showtime @SamanthaBarks will be looking amazing tonight, worth tuning in just for that,” he tweeted ahead of the Oscars. On the night, Russell and Samantha stayed close, sitting side by side at the ceremony. Later in the week, the pair hit the gym together, then stopped for coffee. But working up a sweat isn’t the only thing they have in common.

Mary and Kate wannabes get ready — the world’s most eligible prince could be heading Down Under in October to make your royal dreams come true.

Prince Harry is expected to visit Australia as guest of honour at the Navy’s centenary fleet gala in Sydney Harbour on October 3.

Government sources told the Daily Telegraph that the Royal Australian Navy had requested a royal visitor for the celebration and had been told Harry was the most likely to attend.

“We will achieve royal patronage but the palace will not announce the name until much closer to the event,” a defence insider said.

Buckingham Palace has reportedly told the Navy that Harry’s presence would depend on his military commitments and security concerns.

St James’s Palace has refused to confirm or deny the trip, saying it never comments on royal visits so far in advance.

Harry last visited Australia in his gap year in 2003, when he spent several weeks working on a Queensland sheep station.

My transgender son is marrying my best friend

My transgender son is marrying my best friend

Tracey Barnes always knew her daughter was different, but never imagined she would grow up to be a handsome young man who was engaged to her best friend.

Bobby was just a toddler when Tracey realised she wasn’t like the other little girls she knew.

By the time Bobby was four, she was dressing as a boy and soon after she started school she demanded a boy’s haircut and uniform and insisted she be called “he”.

“He was always a tomboy,” Tracey told British TV show This Morning. “He was misbehaving one day when he was little and I said ‘What do I have to do to make you behave?’ he told me that he wanted to have a boy’s haircut and a boy’s school uniform like his brothers and so that’s what I did.”

Tracey and her best friend Donna Price took Bobby to have his first boy’s haircut and after that, he never looked back.

He dated girls through primary school and at 15 he began hormone treatment to start his transformation to become a man.

Over the years, Tracey and Donna lost touch but they were dramatically reunited last year when Bobby — then 18 and living as a man as he prepared for gender reassignment surgery — bumped into Donna at a bar in their home town of Worcester, England.

“I bumped in to him, said ‘alright bab’, I didn’t think I would be walking out of the pub with him because I was there to kiss someone else!” Donna said.

“But then Bobby spun me around and just kissed me.”

Bobby admitted he always had a crush on Donna as a child and was overwhelmed by those old feelings when he saw her again.

The pair’s romance quickly blossomed and when they realised they were in love, they decided it was time to tell Tracey.

“I was scared because his mum Tracey was my old friend and I have known him from such a young age,” Donna said. “But I don’t need to care about people’s feelings now as long as I know I love him, because we are going to spend the rest of our lives together.

“And Tracey said she was glad he was with me.”

Tracey said she was initially shocked, but quickly became relieved her son had found love with someone who already knew about his past.

“When he got with Donna, who already knew about everything, I felt a relief because it wasn’t just me anymore,” Tracey said.

Donna and Bobby are now engaged, with mum Tracey’s blessing, and plan to wed as soon as Bobby’s sex change operation is complete.

Natural births decline as Caesars reign supreme

Why women should have babies before 35

The number of Australian women having natural births is at an all-time low, with the numbers of women having caesareans and induced births are increasing.

A national maternity report published by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare today revealed that birth interventions are increasingly prevalent in both public and private hospitals.

The number of women having natural vaginal births has fallen from 51.9 per cent in 2004 to 49.6 per cent in 2009.

Caesareans have increased in that same time period, from 25.3 per cent of births in 2004 to 27.1 per cent in 2009.

The report also noted substantial differences in the rate of birth intervention in public and private hospitals, with private sector patients significantly less likely to have a natural vaginal birth and more likely to have a caesarean or induced birth.

Between 2004 and 2009, 56.7 per cent of public patients had a normal vaginal birth, compared to just 36.9 per cent of private patients.

During the same time period, 34.2 per cent of women who gave birth in a private hospital had caesareans, compared with 22.6 per cent of public hospital patients.

Induced births were also more prevalent in private hospitals, with 35 per cent of all private maternity patients being induced, compared to 30 per cent of public patients.

The report was based on data taken from a select group of “lower risk” women aged 20 to 34.

They were all expecting singe babies in the correct birthing position, born between 37 and 41 weeks.

The report also looked into the number of women smoking whilst pregnant and reported a fall in overall findings — although 51 per cent of indigenous women still reported smoking while pregnant.

Demi Moore’s $275m divorce from Ashton Kutcher

Her divorce from Bruce Willis was one of the most expensive in Hollywood history, but Demi Moore's split from Ashton Kutcher is shaping up to be even costlier.
Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher on the red carpet in October.

Her divorce from Bruce Willis was one of the most expensive in Hollywood history, but Demi Moore’s split from Ashton Kutcher is shaping up to be even costlier.

Demi, 50, and Ashton, 35, split in November 2011 after six years of marriage and Ashton filed for divorce last December, 13 months later.

The couple’s lawyers have been trying to reach a confidential settlement in mediation sessions, but talks have reportedly broken down and the pair now look likely to battle for their combined $275 million fortune in court.

Sources say Ashton — who made most of his estimated $130 million fortune while married to Demi — doesn’t believe his estranged wife is entitled to any of his earnings.

Comparatively, Demi — who is worth an estimated $145 million, largely thanks to her hit films in the 1980s and 1990s, long before she met Ashton — earned very little during their marriage.

“Ashton made a lot of money after marrying Demi — a lot more than she made — but despite him becoming just as famous through her, he believes he doesn’t owe her that much,” a source told the New York Post.

“Ashton has been very difficult during the talks. You could even say he has been hostile.

“After over a year of attempting to reach a settlement, Demi is definitely ready to move on. It’s hoped lawyers for both sides can reach a settlement this spring, otherwise the divorce will go into litigation and trial.”

Demi and Ashton have both hired high-profile lawyers and Demi is believed to be asking for a considerable payout.

She received a huge out of court settlement when she divorced Bruce Willis in 2000. The exact amount of the payment is not known, but it was rumoured to be one of the largest ever.

Demi and Ashton married in 2005 but separated six years later amid claims he had an affair with 22-year-old blonde Sara Leal.

“As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life,” Demi said at the time.

It will be Demi’s third divorce. She was married to Freddy Moore from 1980 to 1985 and to Bruce Willis from 1987 to 2000.

Carrie Fisher to reprise role as ‘elderly’ Princess Leia in Star Wars

Carrie Fisher is ready to bust out her white gown and braided buns once again, confirming she will reprise her role as Princess Leia in the new Star Wars movie.
Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hammill

Carrie Fisher is ready to bust out her white gown and braided buns once again, confirming she will reprise her role as Princess Leia in the new Star Wars movie.

The 56-year-old actress makes her return to the role that catapulted her to fame at age 20.

When asked about the question of her iconic character’s age after her sci-fi debut in 1977, Fisher joked she would be “elderly”.

“She’s in an intergalactic old folks home,” she told Palm Beach Illustrated.

The actress joked about her characters signature look, anticipating an elderly Leia would be reluctant to have a makeover.

“The bagel buns and the bikini, because probably she has sundowners syndrome,” she quipped when asked what Leia would be wearing.

“At sundown, she thinks that she’s 20-something. And she puts it on and gets institutionalised.

“I just think she would be just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle.”

Anticipation is building around Episode VII in the series currently slated for a 2015 released and the force, or cast, appears to be growing stronger.

Fisher joins former on-screen flame Harrison Ford who has announced he will also appear as an older Han Solo.

Mark Hamill, the actor who played a young Luke Skywalker told Entertainment Tonight he hasn’t been approached to feature in the new film, but would be keen to get the crew back together.

“I’m assuming because, I haven’t talked to the writers, that these movies would be about our offspring — like my character would be sort of in the Obi-Wan range, and influential character.

“When I found out that the ultimate good news/bad news joke — the good news is there’s a real attractive, hot girl in the universe; the bad news is she’s your sister — I thought, ‘Well, I’m going to wind up like Sir Alec. I’m going to be a lonely old hermit living out in some kind of desert igloo with a couple of robots’,” he said.

“Another thing I’d want to make sure of is are we going to have the whole gang back? Is Carrie and Harrison and Billy Dee and Tony Daniels, everybody that’s around from the original? I want to make sure that everybody’s on board here, rather than just one.”

CrossFit Week 11: Testing Testing…

Week 11 of Karen's CrossFit Challenge

Only a few weeks into the full CrossFit swing of things and I find out about something ominously called Testing Week.

I soon learned that this is a really important part of what they do at CrossFit Athletic. It’s used to give them vital feedback on how we’re all progressing. Since I had never completed the testing week before it would give me a base line to work from and improve upon. So… no pressure. Well a little…

First we were expected to come every day of the week. Sadly (sniff sniff) I knew that wasn’t going to be possible. When I found out that skin fold testing and calipers were involved as part of Monday’s testing I knew that was a perfect day to miss. My upcoming dexascan would tell me all I needed to know about my personal fat content. I didn’t need anyone else pinch testing it to tell me how much was there.

Secondly I could see from the workout plan that some of it was going to be challenging even if I didn’t have a previous score to beat.

So here are the BASE level workouts and my scores:

DAY 1

A. 5 rep max Back Squat: 40 kg

B. 5 rep max Seated Dumbbell Press: 10kg

I thought I would be able to go a little heavier but without your legs involved for a little momentum the weights seem so much heavier.

C. 5 rep max Lateral Pulldown: 47kg

I impressed myself with this score – twice that and I might actually be able to do a chin up.

DAY 2

A. 5 rep max Front Squat 34 kg

This is definitely my weak spot – plenty of room for improvement here.

B. 5 rep max Bench Press 38kg

Once again my upper body redeems me… a little.

C 500 m Row Time Trial 2.01 min

I am totally confident that I can better this… with practice of course.

DAY 3 – AKA the hardest workout I’ve ever done

A. For time: 250m row, 15 Kettlebell Swings with 12kg, 25 Athletic Burpees, 15 Kettlebell Swings, 250m row

Rest 12 minutes and repeat entire sequence

1st round 4.57 min 2nd round 5.06min

My entire success in this workout I owe to J-Lo (AKA John Walton) he partnered up with me on this one and was the most encouraging pit crew member I could have asked for. He counted all my reps and shouted at me while I was rowing to speed up and improve my time. I literally thought I was going to die while I was pumping out my athletic burpees. Truth be told I think I almost did. My heart rate reached 206 bpm during this workout, all I can say about that is holy $#%^!

B. 5 min AMRAP of Double Unders I used the time to practice skipping and after many attempts at the elusive double under I only had little bruises on my shins to show for it. Not a single one… but I’m going to buy a rope and I’ll get there one day. It was so much easier when I was a kid or quite possible I couldn’t do them then either.

DAY 4

3.5km run for time I missed this day so no bench mark other than to admit to myself that I know I’m not a very fast runner and maybe that’s why I couldn’t make it that day.

Day 5

A. Sorenson Hold 1.54 min

This felt so easy to begin with but when my muscles started fatiguing there was nothing I could do. I started shaking like a bowl full of jelly and it was all over.

B. 5 min AMRAP calories on the AIRDYNE bike 87 CAL

This sounds deceptively easy but feels something like cycling through hell. Don’t judge until you’ve tried it.

C. TABATA Anchored Sit-ups total count 57

Again something that starts out feeling pretty easy. I was convinced in my first round that I would reach 80 pretty easily. With each progressive round I felt them get a little bit harder until I was struggling to get 5 done in 20 seconds.

So that was it. Like every other week it came and went leaving me feeling a little bit stronger and a lot more humble. My baseline has been set and it can only go up from here.

Gucci releases ‘cow passports’ to prove your handbag had a happy life

Gucci releases 'cow passports' to prove your handbag had a happy life

Two bags from Gucci's new eco-friendly range.

Gucci has unveiled a new eco-friendly range of handbags that come with a “cow passport” detailing the happy free-range life of the animals each bag was made from.

The luxury label has made ethical versions of three of its most famous designs, Jackie, Hobo and Tote.

Though they look just like their regular counterparts, each of the new bags comes with a “precise history” of their origins.

The passport document begins with the cow’s birth on a rainforest-friendly ranch in Brazil. It then details the cow’s life, and follows the processes the animal, and eventually its hide, goes through to become the high-priced handbag.

The initiative has been widely praised by conservation groups and Gucci executive vice president Diana Zanetto says she hopes other luxury labels will follow suit.

“We hope to be a pioneer in something which could be followed also by other brands in the industry,” Zanetto told Women’s Wear Daily.

“We know that consumers are changing. Consumers are not satisfied only with beautiful products — they want to know where the products come from and how they are made.”

It is unclear how much more Gucci will charge for the new range of bags.
