Magazine under fire for ‘blacking up’ white model to portray ‘African Queen’

Magazine under fire for 'blacking up' white model to portray 'African Queen'

A French fashion magazine has caused controversy by “blacking up” 16-year-old white model for a photo shoot entitled “African Queen”.

Ondria Hardin appears in the March issue of Numéro magazine “heavily bronzed” to resemble a black woman.

The teen model — who usually sports blonde hair and very pale skin — wears an African-style headdress in several of the shots, and Masai-inspired bangles and necklaces to complete the African look.

The choice to paint a Caucasian model instead of using one with a darker skin tone has sparked a firestorm of criticism online, with bloggers around the globe condemning the casting choice.

“Why hire a black model when you can paint a white one?” fashion blogger Foudre wrote.

Women’s site Jezebel was similarly horrified, saying the use of a white model to portray a black character could discourage black women from pursuing careers in fashion.

“It’s impossible to look at this and not ache for young women of colour who want to pursue careers in modelling,” Jezebel reporter Laura Beck wrote.

“When they don’t see themselves on the runway or in magazines, it could be very easy for them to think, ‘huh, I guess modelling isn’t for me’.

“Then the status quo remains, and the runways remain monotone. If jobs for ‘African Queen’ photo spreads aren’t going to black women, what hope is there?”

It’s not the first time a French fashion magazine has got into hot water for “blacking up” a model.

French Vogue caused a scandal in 2009 when it painted supermodel Lara Stone’s skin black for a photo shoot styled by long-time editor Carine Roitfield.

Still think breastfeeding is disgusting? Mums stage nurse-in at cafe

Still think breastfeeding is disgusting? Mums stage nurse-in at cafe

Women at the Sunrise "nurse-in" at Martin Place last month.

If the sight of one breastfeeding woman disgusted staff at a Sydney café on the weekend, we’d love to know how they felt when more than 50 mothers descended on the Newtown eatery at lunchtime today.

Lactivists Australia staged a “nurse-in” at the Satellite Café in the trendy inner-city suburb this afternoon after a waitress branded breastfeeding “an offence against humanity”.

Related: Mums would rather not bare their breasts in public – but babies come first

Regan Matthews was dining at the café on Saturday afternoon when a waiter approached her and asked her to stop breastfeeding her nine-month-old son.

She refused; pointing out that it was illegal to ask her to stop. Shortly afterwards, the owner approached her and told her she was behaving “offensively”.

Regan claims she asked if any of the other patrons were offended, and all denied they were.

“So I was like, ‘Look no one else is offended, what’s the problem?’ Regan said.

“And she said ‘It is offensive’ … and as she was walking away from me she said over her shoulder ‘It’s an offence to humanity’.”

Regan wrote about her experience on Facebook, and the story quickly spread, with hundreds of people from across the country flooding the café’s Facebook page with complaints.

The café has since apologised, but their words haven’t placated angry mums.

“Discrimination in any guise is unacceptable,” Tabitha Adamson wrote. “Newtown was always known as a place of tolerance and acceptance. Apparently some are exempt. How disappointing.”

Hayley Rawhiti agreed, writing: “I don’t think many breastfeeding mothers are going to want to come here after that, apology or not, it’s pretty awful.”

The nurse-in comes just weeks after a similar one in Martin Place, when about 100 mothers breastfed in public to protest against David Koch’s comments that nursing women should be “more discreet and modest”.

Great read: Ketchup Clouds

Great read: Ketchup Clouds

Ketchup Clouds by Annabel Pitcher, Indigo, $22.99.

It’s called cross-over fiction; novels that speak to adults as potently as they do the youth market and if any sector is going to save the future of book publishing, surely this is it.

It’s a category forged by Harry Potter, Twilight and a host of post-utopian serials, but at the more literary end there are works so unique, sophisticated and affecting, they are breaking totally new territory.

Annabel Pitcher is one such writer. She stormed the Young Adult barricades in 2011 with the deeply moving My Sister Lives On The Mantelpiece about a family falling apart following one child’s death in the London terrorist attacks, told through the eyes of a bewildered 10-year-old.

And with this second novel, Ketchup Clouds, the former teacher and scriptwriter presents another force majeure, this time examining the disturbingly troubled world of a 15-year-old girl racked with guilt.

From leafy suburbia somewhere in England, Zoe (the pseudonym she adopts to protect her anonymity) starts writing to Stuart Harris, a murderer on death row in Texas.

He’s the only person she feels able to identify with since, like Harris, Zoe is a killer, too, only she isn’t brave enough to turn herself in.

Darting forward and back in time, Zoe’s tale unfolds in captivating clarity as we stomp around in the messed-up head of a teenager through her candid letters to Harris as his days left diminish.

It’s like reading your daughter’s Facebook, censorship removed, as we get an access-all-areas pass to teenage parties and the painfully recognisable situations girls get themselves into when puberty, passions and sexual immaturity clash.

Zoe is intelligent and though not entirely likeable the tension in her storytelling as we discover whether she has killed and if so whom, how and why, is at once menacing and thrilling.

And who is this murderer she’s writing to and what makes her want to confide in him?

It’s impossible not to feel empathy for our protagonist, especially as, behind the scenes, her home life is also fracturing.

Will Zoe get away with it? Pitcher keeps us in an ecstatic embrace of wonderment.

The ending doesn’t quite deliver the required final punch, but the writing is so smart and surprising, you won’t be able to stop reading.

Anne Hathaway’s Oscars wardrobe malfunction

Anne Hathaway's Oscars 2013

Last year Angelina Jolie’s protruding right leg stole the spotlight on the Academy Awards red carpet — this year it was Anne Hathaway’s nipples’ turn to make headlines.

The best supporting actress winner donned a pale pink Prada gown for Hollywood’s night of nights, but failed to notice that the gown’s sheer material and unfortunately placed seams made her nipples especially prominent.

Within minutes of Anne stepping out on the red carpet, the hashtag LesNipperables was trending, and a Twitter account called @HathawayNipples had appeared, attracting thousands of followers before it was disabled.

Anne was reportedly planning to wear a Valentino gown to the Academy awards, but decided on the Prada number at the “eleventh hour”.

It’s not the first time Anne has suffered a wardrobe malfunction — last year she was humiliated when she flashed her genitals to photographers as she got out of her car at the New York premiere of Les Misérables.

Kris Jenner: Mum or monster?

Kris Jenner: Mum or monster?

The creator of the Kardashian empire is the first to admit she’s made mistakes – but is she as bad as her critics make out?

Nobody works a room quite like Kris Jenner. Sipping vodka and flitting around in a black cut-out dress, she was every inch the confident woman about Hollywood at a recent industry event. But her mind was elsewhere, she confided to US magazine Us Weekly. Driving over, she’d received a call from her grandson Mason’s father Scott Disick, saying the three-year-old had asked to have dinner with his grandma.

“For five seconds, I wanted to turn around because I was letting them down,” she confesses. It’s a feeling that often haunts the mother of six. As the “mumager” for Kourtney, 33, Kim, 32, Khloe, 28, Rob, 25, Kendall, 17, and Kylie, 15, she’s had to deal with everything from negotiating a Playboy magazine deal for Kim to the sale of pictures of her first grandchild.

“I feel guilty all the time because I can’t be everywhere at once,” the 57-year-old says. “I feel like I want to be there for everybody, for whoever needs me.” Her confession comes after a tough few months during which Kris has had to deflect claims she’s a controlling, narcissistic mother who forced her kids into the spotlight. The nastiness has ramped up since Kim announced she will keep her child with Kanye West away from their E! reality shows. Now, Kris defends herself against the charges.

To score their now world-famous TV reality show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Kris sent a home video of a raucous family barbecue. The first scene of the show in 2007 featured Kris discussing Kim’s bum. Another infamous episode features Kourtney giving Khloe a bikini wax. But Kris denies she’s exploited her daughters. “My family could’ve said, ‘Are you out of your mind?’ But everyone was excited!” she says.“My girls are not pansies.”

Lisa and Stefano’s secret proposal

Lisa and Stefano's secret proposal

Surprise and romance are the order of the day at the couple’s restaurant…

When images of South Australian MKR star Lisa Gabel, 41,wearing a ring on her engagement finger re-surfaced last week, the rumour mill went into overdrive her boyfriend Stefano Guerra had popped the question! And now a source connected to the couple hints that they added serious fireworks to their instant restaurant by announcing some big news.

“No-one saw this coming. But they all thought it was brilliant, the best thing ever,” reveals the source. “It made her all flustered to have to cook for rest of night. It was truly a surprise. She didn’t seem to know anything about it.” Last week Channel Seven remained tight-lipped about the surprise, stating, “no comment”. Although Lisa’s ex-husband couldn’t confirm the news, he was thrilled at the prospect of Stefano, 32, joining the family.

“I can’t tell you what his cooking’s like, but he’s a good bloke,” joked Max, who has three children with Lisa. “He’s very thoughtful and respectful towards me and the children and I appreciate that greatly.” No doubt the whole family – along with the rest of the country – will be glued to the screen on Tuesday when Lisa and Stefano cook off for the chance to stay in the competition.

“I never miss it! I have been watching the show and enjoying it and while the show is on I text my oldest daughter,” Max says. Last year, several fellow MKR contenders attended Meghan and Andy’s wedding – so are this year’s contestants expecting an invite to the Lisa and Stefano’s nuptials? “I doubt it!” laughs feisty gatecrasher Sophia.

Who is going to take home the Oscar?

Who is going to take home Oscar at the 85th Annual Academy Awards?
Anne Hathaway and Daniel Day-Lewis

Every woman, man and child in Hollywood is currently counting down to February 24, otherwise known as Oscar’s night.

Host Seth McFarlane is practicing jokes, the nominees are anxiously composing their acceptance speeches and the rest of us just want to know one thing — who will win?

Read on for our red-hot tips for the 85th Annual Academy Awards.

Best Picture:

Amour, Argo

Beasts of the Southern Wild

Django Unchained

Les Miserables

Life of Pi,

Lincoln

Silver Linings Playbook

Zero Dark Thirty.

Our pick: Lincoln

This is always the hardest category to tip and 2013 is no exception with nine films vying for the coveted award. Argo, produced by Hollywood heavyweights Ben Affleck and George Clooney, is the current favourite after winning a Golden Globe and a SAG award. Les Miserables and Amour both took home Golden Globes as well.

So why are we tipping Lincoln? The film is about beloved American president Abraham Lincoln and his struggles to pass the thirteenth amendment to the Constitution abolishing slavery in the United States. With a paltry 23 Oscar nominations between producers Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy we just have a feeling about this one.

Best director:

Michael Haneke, Amour

Benh Zeitlin, Beasts of the Southern Wild

Ang Lee, Life of Pi

Steven Spielberg, Lincoln

David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook.

Our pick: Steven Spielberg for Lincoln

This is Spielberg’s 15th Oscar nomination so it is no wonder he is currently the favourite to take out the Best Director award this year. Why does he get our vote? We’ve never heard of the other nominees. Simple.

Best actor:

Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook

Daniel Day-Lewis Lincoln

Hugh Jackman, Les Miserables

Joaquin Phoenix, The Master

Denzel Washington, Flight.

Our pick: Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln

Daniel Day-Lewis has already taken out the Golden Globe and SAG awards for male leading actor and bookmakers are only offering three cents to the dollar for bets on his Oscar win. While we would love for our Hugh to add an Oscar win to his Golden Globe for Les Miserables, Daniel Day-Lewis will be tough to beat come Oscars night.

Best actress :

Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty

Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook

Emmanuelle Riva, Amour

Quvenzhane Wallis, Beasts of the Southern Wild

Naomi Watts, The Impossible.

Our pick: Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty

Though Jennifer Lawrence is currently the market favourite after taking home a Golden Globe and a SAG award, Jessica Chastain isn’t trailing too far behind her in the odds. Chastain also took home a Golden Globe for her portrayal of a CIA agent on the hunt for terrorist Osama Bin Laden and we smell Oscar gold.

Best supporting actor:

Alan Arkin, Argo

Robert De Niro, Silver Linings Playbook

Philip Seymour Hoffman, The Master

Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln

Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained.

Our pick: Tommy Lee Jones for Lincoln

Tommy Lee Jones took home the SAG award. Christoph Waltz took home the Golden Globe. They’re neck-and-neck but we’re tipping this Oscar year belongs to Lincoln.

Best supporting actress:

Amy Adams, The Master

Sally Field, Lincoln

Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables

Helen Hunt, The Sessions

Jacki Weaver, Silver Linings Playbook.

Our pick: Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables.

Anne Hathaway has already taken home a Golden Globe and a SAG award for her mesmerising performance in Les Miserables, making her the red-hot favourite. Bookmakers are offering just two cents in the dollar for her Oscar chances, making her all but unbeatable come Oscars night.
