CrossFit Week 11: Testing Testing…

Week 11 of Karen's CrossFit Challenge

Only a few weeks into the full CrossFit swing of things and I find out about something ominously called Testing Week.

I soon learned that this is a really important part of what they do at CrossFit Athletic. It’s used to give them vital feedback on how we’re all progressing. Since I had never completed the testing week before it would give me a base line to work from and improve upon. So… no pressure. Well a little…

First we were expected to come every day of the week. Sadly (sniff sniff) I knew that wasn’t going to be possible. When I found out that skin fold testing and calipers were involved as part of Monday’s testing I knew that was a perfect day to miss. My upcoming dexascan would tell me all I needed to know about my personal fat content. I didn’t need anyone else pinch testing it to tell me how much was there.

Secondly I could see from the workout plan that some of it was going to be challenging even if I didn’t have a previous score to beat.

So here are the BASE level workouts and my scores:

DAY 1

A. 5 rep max Back Squat: 40 kg

B. 5 rep max Seated Dumbbell Press: 10kg

I thought I would be able to go a little heavier but without your legs involved for a little momentum the weights seem so much heavier.

C. 5 rep max Lateral Pulldown: 47kg

I impressed myself with this score – twice that and I might actually be able to do a chin up.

DAY 2

A. 5 rep max Front Squat 34 kg

This is definitely my weak spot – plenty of room for improvement here.

B. 5 rep max Bench Press 38kg

Once again my upper body redeems me… a little.

C 500 m Row Time Trial 2.01 min

I am totally confident that I can better this… with practice of course.

DAY 3 – AKA the hardest workout I’ve ever done

A. For time: 250m row, 15 Kettlebell Swings with 12kg, 25 Athletic Burpees, 15 Kettlebell Swings, 250m row

Rest 12 minutes and repeat entire sequence

1st round 4.57 min 2nd round 5.06min

My entire success in this workout I owe to J-Lo (AKA John Walton) he partnered up with me on this one and was the most encouraging pit crew member I could have asked for. He counted all my reps and shouted at me while I was rowing to speed up and improve my time. I literally thought I was going to die while I was pumping out my athletic burpees. Truth be told I think I almost did. My heart rate reached 206 bpm during this workout, all I can say about that is holy $#%^!

B. 5 min AMRAP of Double Unders I used the time to practice skipping and after many attempts at the elusive double under I only had little bruises on my shins to show for it. Not a single one… but I’m going to buy a rope and I’ll get there one day. It was so much easier when I was a kid or quite possible I couldn’t do them then either.

DAY 4

3.5km run for time I missed this day so no bench mark other than to admit to myself that I know I’m not a very fast runner and maybe that’s why I couldn’t make it that day.

Day 5

A. Sorenson Hold 1.54 min

This felt so easy to begin with but when my muscles started fatiguing there was nothing I could do. I started shaking like a bowl full of jelly and it was all over.

B. 5 min AMRAP calories on the AIRDYNE bike 87 CAL

This sounds deceptively easy but feels something like cycling through hell. Don’t judge until you’ve tried it.

C. TABATA Anchored Sit-ups total count 57

Again something that starts out feeling pretty easy. I was convinced in my first round that I would reach 80 pretty easily. With each progressive round I felt them get a little bit harder until I was struggling to get 5 done in 20 seconds.

So that was it. Like every other week it came and went leaving me feeling a little bit stronger and a lot more humble. My baseline has been set and it can only go up from here.

Gucci releases ‘cow passports’ to prove your handbag had a happy life

Gucci releases 'cow passports' to prove your handbag had a happy life

Two bags from Gucci's new eco-friendly range.

Gucci has unveiled a new eco-friendly range of handbags that come with a “cow passport” detailing the happy free-range life of the animals each bag was made from.

The luxury label has made ethical versions of three of its most famous designs, Jackie, Hobo and Tote.

Though they look just like their regular counterparts, each of the new bags comes with a “precise history” of their origins.

The passport document begins with the cow’s birth on a rainforest-friendly ranch in Brazil. It then details the cow’s life, and follows the processes the animal, and eventually its hide, goes through to become the high-priced handbag.

The initiative has been widely praised by conservation groups and Gucci executive vice president Diana Zanetto says she hopes other luxury labels will follow suit.

“We hope to be a pioneer in something which could be followed also by other brands in the industry,” Zanetto told Women’s Wear Daily.

“We know that consumers are changing. Consumers are not satisfied only with beautiful products — they want to know where the products come from and how they are made.”

It is unclear how much more Gucci will charge for the new range of bags.

Kate ‘lets slip’ she’s having a daughter

Kate 'lets slip' she's having a daughter

Pregnant Kate Middleton receives flowers from a little girl

The Duchess of Cambridge has hinted that the pitter patter of little princess feet may soon be heard in the palace.

While visiting the seaport of Grimsby, Kate may have spilled the beans about the sex of the royal baby.

After being handed a white teddy bear by a local well-wisher, the expectant royal reportedly said, “Thank you, I’ll take that for my d…” before cutting herself off.

Unless she was referring to her dog, Lupo, Kate’s slip of the tongue could indicate she and Prince William are expecting a daughter.

When pushed to reveal if that was indeed the d-word she stopped herself from saying, Kate replied “we’re not telling”.

Never before has the sex of a royal baby been announced before his or her arrival, so Kate’s slip of the tongue is unlikely to be confirmed any time soon.

If the royal baby, due in July, is a girl, she will be called ‘Princess’ in line with new laws supported by the Queen that allow any royal baby, no matter its gender, to become heir to the throne.

Whether it’s Her Royal Highness or His, Kate and William’s child has been moving and kicking a great deal.

The Duchess reportedly told a well-wisher, one of more than 2000 who eagerly greeted her on her most recent public appearance, that the baby had been kicking “very much”.

Surrogate offered $10,000 to abort baby

Surrogate offered $10,000 to abort baby

© CNN.

A surrogate has revealed she was offered $10,000 to abort the baby she was carrying when its biological parents found out it was severely disabled.

Crystal Kelley was 29 when she contacted a surrogacy agency to enquire about carrying a child for a couple struggling with fertility issues.

The agency put her in contact with a couple who had three children and were desperate to have a fourth.

Kelley and the couple met and on October 8, 2011, two embryos were implanted in Kelley’s uterus. Ten days later, a test revealed Kelley was pregnant.

The couple were in constant contact with Kelley over the next few weeks but everything changed when the expectant mother went for a routine five-month scan.

An ultrasound struggled to pick up the baby’s heartbeat. The following week, another ultrasound revealed serious abnormalities in the foetus.

The unborn baby, a girl, had a cleft lip and palate, a brain cyst and serious heart defects. She would likely survive the birth, but would need immediate heart surgery and many more surgeries in the months after that. Her chance of going on to lead a “normal” life was less than 25 per cent.

The grim prognosis horrified the baby’s parents, who had their doctor write to Kelley’s midwife saying they considered termination to be the most “humane” option.

Kelley disagreed, insisting the child should be given a chance.

“They were both visibly upset. The mother was crying,” Kelley told CNN. “They said they didn’t want to bring a baby into the world only for that child to suffer. They said I should try to be God-like and have mercy on the child and let her go.

“I told them that they had chosen me to carry and protect this child, and that was exactly what I was going to do. I told them it wasn’t their decision to play God.”

After several emotionally-fraught days, Kelley received an email from the surrogacy agency. The couple were offering her $10,000 to have an abortion. When she refused they threatened to sue her for a breach of her surrogacy contract.

Kelley got her own lawyer and days later, he told her the parents had changed their minds. They were planning to take custody of the baby when it was born, then immediately surrender her as a ward of the state.

Kelley was desperate to avoid this fate for the unborn child, so she moved to Michigan, a state that doesn’t recognise surrogacy agreements, declaring the child to be the legal responsibility of the woman who gives birth to it.

“Once I realised that I was going to be the only person really fighting for her, that Mama bear instinct kicked in, and there was no way I was giving up without a fight,” Kelley said.

In the last few weeks of her pregnancy Kelley agonised over what to do with the child inside her. As a single mother of two kids with no job, savings or fixed address, she decided she couldn’t raise the baby — but she knew someone who could.

While researching children with special needs online, Kelley found a woman who raised several children — both her own and those she had adopted — with medical problems. Kelley asked if she would adopt the baby in her stomach, and the woman said yes.

The baby’s biological parents launched another legal challenge, which wasn’t resolved by the time the child was born on June 25, 2012.

Her condition was much worse than expected. She had a long list of complex and serious birth defects and needed open heart surgery within hours of her birth and will need many more operations in her lifetime.

Three weeks after the birth, Kelley and the biological parents struck a deal. They agreed to give up their parental rights and allow the adoption as long as they could stay in touch with the baby’s adoptive parents.

Kelley has been bombarded with criticism for the way she acted, but she believes she did the right thing.

“I can’t tell you how many people told me that I was bad, that I was wrong, that I should go have an abortion, that I would be damned to hell,” she said.

“No one else was feeling this pregnancy the way that I was. No one else could feel her kicking and moving around inside.

“I knew from the beginning that this little girl had an amazing fighting spirit, and whatever challenges were thrown at her, she would go at them with every ounce of spirit that she could possibly have.”

Michelle Williams has given a candid interview about life, work and her daughter Matilda.

The 32-year-old actress opened up to AnOther magazine just days after ending her year-long relationship fellow actor Jason Segel.

She said that she has finally realised no one has a perfect life, and she’s happiest when she’s focussing on work and Matilda.

“I guess realising that there is no such thing as a perfect balance, it’s not like riding a bicycle, you don’t want to just figure it out and stay on track,” she said.

“I find that when I’m working, there are only two things: there’s my work and the kid, everything else has to fall away.”

Michelle Williams in AnOther magazine.

Michelle said she felt more comfortable in her own skin since turning 30 two years ago, but said she still didn’t feel “settled”.

“I feel much more accepting of myself, like having a clear picture of myself that includes all of my flaws,” she said.

Michelle Williams in AnOther magazine.

“But no, I don’t feel settled, I don’t feel like I have everything in a place where I want it to stay.”

Michelle posed in a variety of outfits for the biannual British fashion mag.

Facebook helped us bring our baby home

Facebook helped us bring our baby home

Jessica and Jack Hance thank Facebook for their new baby girl Eliana. Picture: Facebook.

Like it or loathe it, sometimes there’s no denying the power of social media.

A US couple has been granted a Facebook miracle after raising $33,000 to adopt a child in just three days.

Jack and Jessica Hance, a youth minister and family minister from Louisiana, started their journey through the complicated adoption process more than two years ago and each took up second jobs to fund the expensive endeavour.

A call from an adoption agency last week that a woman, nine months pregnant, had chosen the couple to adopt her child was a miracle in itself for the hopeful couple but also delivered a whole new challenge.

“We talked to the lawyer, we talked to the agency and were informed that the total cost of the adoption, uncontested, will be $32,250,” the couple wrote on their Facebook page.

They were also informed that while the baby was to be delivered at any moment, the lastest they could pay and finalise the adoption would be 72 hours after the birth.

Seeing the short window of hope as a sign, Jack and Jessica took to Facebook and created the page Help Jake & Jessica Adopt to reach out for donations.

“Just think if 300 people donate $100, we will make it,” they wrote on February 22nd, the date they launched the page, and the due date of the baby.

After only three days the page had gained hundreds of likes and seen $27,000 deposited into the couple’s ‘adoption fund’ account. By the time the baby’s mother gave birth, they were up to $33,000.

“Oh my goodness! WOW! We have reached the magic number! I don’t know what to say. That was way too generous!!” they wrote.

“We will never be able to show how grateful we are to y’all!”

Since the successful social media campaign, Jack and Jessica have picked up their daughter Eliana, posting pictures of their “little miracle” and continually thanking supporters.

“She will know this amazing story and journey she was a part of before she was born!”

Outrage over ‘Slave Style’ jewellery

Outrage over 'Slave Style' jewellery

The 'Slave Style' necklace attracked fierce consumer backlash online

Spanish fashion chain Mango has been forced to apologise for advertising a ‘Slave Style’ range of jewellery, prompting backlash from internet users taking offence at the description.

An online petition organised by two French actresses entitled “Slavery is not fashion”, has attracted more than 6250 signatures.

“This jewellery is meant to make an object of fantasy and fashion out of slavery,” they said in the petition, addressed to Mango’s public relations department.

“Mango is trivialising tragedies … that still today have an impact on millions of human beings across the world.”

The company blamed the mistake on a translation error and the items have now been renamed.

The word ‘esclave’ used in the range’s description can translate to ‘bracelet’ or ‘chain’, and does not have negative connotations in Spanish.

A gold change, previously described as ‘Slave Style’, is now simply listed as ‘Necklace’ on its French site.

“We regret the translation error. The relevant services have been alerted and will make the correction immediately,” Mango tweeted.

But despite the explanation, criticism is still raging on social media with commenters lobbying to boycott Mango.

Some users have likened Mango’s faux pas to the crisis Amazon got itself into earlier this week over selling offensive t-shirts, which it also blamed on a computer error.

Controversial designer Jeremy Scott caused similar outrage with a pair of shoes he designed for Adidas featuring ‘shackles’ attached around the ankle, linked to racism and slavery.

After plenty of backlash, Adidas cancelled the shoe before it was released and issued an apology.

Your say: Do you think Mango is trivialising tragedy? Are ‘slavery-style’ accessories offensive?

Queen all smiles as she leaves hospital one day early

Queen all smiles as she leaves hospital one day early

Queen Elizabeth.

Queen Elizabeth grinned broadly as she left hospital yesterday, one day earlier than expected.

The 86-year-old monarch walked unaided out of London’s King Edward VII Hospital at 2.45pm yesterday afternoon, less than 24 hours after she was admitted.

Dressed in a smart red wool coat, a pearl necklace and large diamond brooch, the Queen looked happy and healthy as she made her way back to her car.

The Queen was admitted to the central London hospital on Sunday evening, suffering symptoms of gastroenteritis.

She was expected to remain under supervision in hospital for two days, but surprised everyone when she announced she felt well enough to return home to Buckingham Palace a full 24 hours earlier than planned.

But despite her smiles and early discharge from hospital, the Queen will not be carrying out any public appearances for the rest of the week.

“Engagements cancelled or postponed this week remain so,” a spokesman said. “Next week we’ll have to see, as she has only just been released from hospital.”

It was the monarch’s first hospitalisation in a decade, and she was believed to be adamant that “no fuss” was made over her illness.

She was so determined to avoid any trouble that she chose to spend the weekend resting at Windsor Castle, instead of seeking medical attention as soon as her symptoms began last week.

When her illness worsened, Her Majesty refused an ambulance, opting instead for her usual car and driver.

It was only the fifth time the Queen has been hospitalised in her 60-year reign.

She was hospitalised in 1982 when she had a wisdom tooth removed, in 1994 when she broke her wrist in a horse riding accident, and twice in 2003 for surgery on both knees.

Her commitment to her role means she has only cancelled a handful of engagements in the past decade — usually due to heavy colds or back pain — despite her advancing age.

Drunk, alone or wearing a short skirt: Rape is never, ever the victim’s fault

Drunk, alone or wearing a short skirt: Rape is never, ever the victim's fault

Short Skirt? Rape is still not the victim's fault.

Even police were shocked by the horrific gang rape of a young woman in Baulkham Hills over the weekend but many people are already blaming the unnamed victim.

She was probably drunk, they say, and wearing a short skirt and high heels. And what was she doing walking home alone at 1am? She was practically asking for something bad to happen.

To suggest that the freedom or movements of women should be restricted in order to avoid such violence is abhorrent.

Too often, when it comes to sexual assault we say the victim should not have been there, or done that, or looked like this, or behaved like that, when in fact what we should be saying, “Where does the offender get off thinking they can behave like that and how dare they?”.

Women have every right to be in any place at any time doing whatever it is that they choose, just as men do.

It is the offenders who are wrong and whose behaviour is offensive in the extreme. They are the ones who should not be there. It is their behaviours that need to change and their lives that should be restricted.

It is every woman’s human right to be able to go about the business of their lives in safety and it is the responsibility of all of us to reject the behaviours of sex offenders and the attitudes and beliefs that create an environment in which they think they can act as they do.

While any form of sexual assault is always horrific, an attack by strangers at night is the worst nightmare that all women are warned about.

Fortunately this form of sexual assault is very rare.

This is not to diminish the impact this violence has had on the young woman who was attacked by strangers in Baulkham Hills. Nor should it in any way decrease the empathy and support we should all be offering her in her recovery.

While continuing to be appalled by the actions of those men we need to keep in mind that most sexual assaults are committed by family members, friends and acquaintances.

In fact sexual assault by a stranger equals less than 1 per cent of the sexual assault that happen in our community.

In most sexual assaults the offender uses the familiarity and trust that comes with knowing a person to manipulate them into a location where they can commit their act without interruption or witness.

Sex offenders will commonly blame or threaten the person to stop them reporting to police, an effective strategy as only 15 per cent of sexual assaults are reported.

We should support, not blame, all victims of sexual assault and send a clear message to their attackers: you will be brought to account.

Karen Willis is the Executive Officer of the NSW Rape Crisis Centre.

Kate Winslet has given a revealing interview in the UK edition of Harper’s Bazaar magazine, describing how much she’s changed since she split from her second husband Sam Mendes.

Appearing on the cover of the magazine, she tells of how her third husband, Ned Rocknroll, nephew of Richard Branson, has helped her to understand herself since they met in 2011.

“I’ve really learnt a great deal about myself, in the last four years in particular,” she told the publication.

Kate Winslet for Harper’s Bazaar

“I think I can see more clearly now — about how the pattern of past experiences has shaped who I am, and the characters I have played — and I’m grateful for that.

“I have so much more material to draw on for work — rubble, bricks — and I know I can carry it now.

“I’m not going to drop it, and if I do, I’ll sift through it. Does that make any sense at all? Probably not … ?”

A stunning black and white pictorial spread by photographer Alexi Lubmomirski accompanies the interview, showing the 37-year-old actress looking better than ever.
