Mum creates ‘dolls with Down syndrome’ for her daughter

Mum creates 'dolls with Down syndrome' for her daughter

Dolls For Downs designs.

Like many mothers of children with Down syndrome, Connie Feda was frustrated by the lack of dolls that looked like her daughter. But unlike thousands of others who suffer in silence, Connie decided to do something about it.

The US mother-of-six, who lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has created a range of dolls that have the same distinctive facial features of her youngest daughter Hannah, 13, and other kids with Down’s.

Connie dreamt up the idea for her Dolls For Downs project after her daughter complained that none of the dolls in a toy catalogue looked like her.

“I wanted Hannah to see a doll with Down syndrome and see something beautiful, because that’s what I see when I look at her,” Connie told the Huffington Post.

“I want to represent children with disabilities in an honest, favourable light.”

Dolls For Downs toys are due to hit shelves in May. They will sell for $87.50 and the worldwide demand is expected to be huge.

And the dolls aren’t just for fun — they come with clothing complete with zippers, Velcro, buttons and ties to help kids develop motor skills.

‘You are my hero’: A mum’s letter to her baby with Down syndrome

'You are my hero': A mum's letter to her baby with Down syndrome

Veronika Davie

Kylee Davie’s four-year-old daughter Veronika was born with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and a congenital heart defect. She wasn’t supposed to live, let alone walk, but last month, Veronika strode into school for her first day with all the other kids. To celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, Kylee shares a letter she’s written for her heroic little girl.

My Dearest Veronika,

Just under five years ago I was asked three little words that changed my life completely: “Are you okay?”

It was April 28, 2008, and I was having my 36-week scan with the gynaecologist. He froze the screen and grabbed a couple of medical books off the shelf. “Yes that (pointing to the screen), looks like that (pointing to a picture in the book).”

In pictures: Veronika’s amazing life

You had massively swollen ventricles in your brain and later we found out that you had suffered a massive stroke.

Yet somehow, you survived.

I got up to leave the appointment to go and have an urgent ultrasound to find out more about what was going on in your brain and my OBGYN asked me, “Are you okay?”

I thought I was, but really I wasn’t and that is when I had to strap on my seat belt and ride this roller coaster. Those three little words were to change my life completely.

This was just the beginning. A little over two weeks later, we went to hospital to welcome you to the world.

There were many prayers sent out over those couple of weeks — prayers that you would survive your birth, as we were told you might not make it.

Shortly after you were born you let out a cry and my princess, that was the most amazing cry I have ever heard, because then I knew you were okay, you were alive, and ready to tackle life.

You were taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit soon after you were born, where you were to spend just over five weeks.

Later that day you were diagnosed with Down syndrome, and a congenital heart defect we were told would need open heart surgery to repair.

When you were a week old you were well enough to have your first MRI, to see what was going on inside that pretty head of yours. The news was nothing short of devastating.

You had suffered a massive bilateral stroke that should have killed you.

Somehow, you survived but you had catastrophic brain injuries and the doctors told me that you would never walk. I replied, “But that’s not fair! She already has Down syndrome!”

I cried for the next two weeks and then I decided they were wrong. Not only would you survive, you would walk into kindergarten on your first day of school.

We started therapy, therapy and more therapy! But at 11 months of age there was another blow — you were diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

Add that to Down syndrome and even the specialists had no idea how to treat you. But I had faith in you — if anyone can accept a challenge my princess, it is you.

The last four years seem to have flown by, yet at the same time they have been painstakingly slow and full of ups and downs.

The lows were devastating. The day you were rushed to hospital, where five doctors had to drill into your shin to get a drip into your bone marrow — all without anaesthetic, because there was no time — was easily the most horrific day of my life. It was something no parent should see their baby go through.

But the highs were pretty amazing, like the day you managed to hold your bottle for yourself for the first time when you were two-and-a-half. I was so excited that you had mastered that skill and also it meant that I was to have an extra two hours in every day because I didn’t have to hold the bottle for you.

But the ultimate high was this year on February 6 when you walked into kindergarten for your first day of school, just like I promised you would.

It was the best of days, one I feared would never come after the unexplained seizures you suffered in December, causing your development to regress by more than a year.

We worked incredibly hard throughout January to regain those skills you lost, and I am sure I was easily the proudest parent at school that day.

Your determination and infectious love of life brings joy to everyone around you.

Even with all life’s challenges, you wake up every day with a smile.

If someone had told me five years ago that I was about to have a baby with severe multiple disabilities, I wouldn’t have believed them, as that happens to “someone else”.

I wouldn’t have believed a combination of Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, congenital heart defect, severe hypotonia, multiple food intolerances, and epilepsy were even possible — but to me, you are not all of these conditions, you are just Veronika, my amazing daughter.

At some point in a person’s life, everyone needs to have someone that inspires them to be the best they can be; someone that is a hero in the true sense of the word; someone that when you are told you will never do something, has the strength and determination to prove them wrong.

In pictures: Veronika’s amazing life

Veronika, you are all of those things to me. You are my hero. You challenge me to be the best Mum I can be, to help you fulfil your limitless potential and then just a little more.

For your unconditional love I am honoured to be called your Mum and I believe you survived to change perceptions of people living with different abilities, one person at a time.

Love, your mum Kylee.

Is lack of sleep making you fat?

You know that lack of sleep is making you tired but scientists say it could also make you gain weight.

A US study which observed participants who slept for just five hours each night found that they gained more weight over a week, and when they returned to adequate sleeping patterns, they shed weight.

Researchers at Colorado Boulder University say that while the results were definitive, weight loss or gain can’t be wholly attributed to lack of sleep.

Participants who lacked sleep were found to snack more and have a higher consumption of fat and carbohydrates whereas those who slept for nine hours a night tended to eat larger breakfasts but didn’t crave after-dinner snacks.

“I don’t think extra sleep by itself is going to lead to weight loss,” Professor Ken Wright told The Daily Mail.

“Problems with weight gain and obesity are much more complex than that. But I think it could help.

“If we can incorporate healthy sleep into weight-loss and weight-maintenance programmes our findings suggest it may assist people to obtain a healthier weight.”

Previous studies have found that a lack of sleep can slow down metabolism and cause the body to use less energy for simple tasks like breathing and eating.

Limited rest has also been thought to encourage weight gain by boosting hunger and slowing down the rate at which calories are burned, as has also been associated with weight-related diseases like type-2 diabetes.

The current findings add to growing evidence that overeating at night may contribute to weight gain.

“Just getting less sleep by itself is not going to lead to weight gain. But when people get insufficient sleep it leads them to eat more than they actually need,” Dr Wright said.

Pippa Middleton snapped kissing new man on the slopes

Pippa Middleton snapped kissing new man on the slopes

Pippa Middleton with an admiring race steward at a ski marathon in 2012.

Just days after Prince Harry was photographed smooching his new girlfriend on the slopes, another eligible royal relative has been snapped kissing on piste.

Pippa Middleton and her new beau, stockbroker Nico Jackson, put on a public display of affection in St Moritz yesterday after competing in a ski marathon.

Nico finished the 67km race in 2 hours and 40 minutes, 8 minutes ahead of Pippa but was waiting for his new girlfriend at the finish line — with her parents Michael and Carole Middleton.

Despite the gruelling race, Pippa, 29, and Nico, 35, were all smiles, posing for a series of intimate photos for the waiting paparazzi pack.

Pippa and Nico are believed to have met on a ski trip last year. They have been dating discreetly ever since, but their bidding romance was only made public when photographs emerged from the Middleton family’s recent holiday to the Caribbean island of Mustique.

As well as revealing the Duchess of Cambridge’s bikini-clad baby bump, the pictures showed Pippa holding hands with Nico on the beach.

Pippa and Nico have been enjoying a relaxed holiday in the Swiss ski resort with her parents.

Mum arrested for selling kids on Facebook

Mum arrested for selling kids on Facebook

A 22-year-old mother has tried to sell her two kids on Facebook for $5000. Hilarious, right? That’s probably what she thought. Until she was arrested.

Misty VanHorn allegedly tried to sell her two-year-old for $1,000, and asked for $4,000 for her four-year-old to get enough cash to bail her boyfriend out of jail.

Hollywood Life reports the young mother allegedly resorted to selling her children on the social media site after door knocking for neighbourhood failed.

Perhaps the most shocking part of the story is that she found a buyer.

According to The Daily Dot Misty contacted another woman in Arkansas to negotiate the sale.

“Just come to Sallisaw, it’s only 30 minutes away and I’ll give you all of her stuff and let y’all have her forever for $1,000,” Ms VanHorn reportedly wrote to the women.

The young mother was arrested and is being held by the state of Oklahoma for $40,000. The woman who tried to buy her babies may also be charged with the trafficking of minors.

Two years ago a Victorian woman was being investigated by detectives from the Sexual Offences and Child Abuse unit after she put her kids up for sale on eBay ‘for a joke’.

Detectives decided not to press charges at the time but treated the issue very seriously.

“We need to get to the bottom of why she did this,” a spokesman from the Department of Human Services said at the time.

“Is there a mental illness, is the mother not coping or was it simply a joke?”

Pippa Middleton kisses new beau on ski slopes

Pippa Middleton kisses new beau on ski slopes

Keen skier Pippa Middleton following a race in Sweden last year.

b>Pippa Middleton and her new beau, Nico Jackson, have taken their romance to the slopes, kissing and cuddling at a luxury Swiss resort.

After a relaxing getaway to Mustique in the Caribbean with Pippa’s family, including her older sister the Duchess of Cambridge and brother-in-law Prince William, the pair were spotted getting cosy on the slopes St Moritz, where they enjoyed a more action-packed holiday.

The 29-year-old and her beau took part in the annual Engadin Ski Marathon, a gruelling 45km cross country ski race, and were cheered over the finish line by Pippa’s parents Carole and Michael, and brother James.

After the race, fellow holidaymakers at the exclusive resort reported seeing the keen skiers embrace and kiss affectionately.

The loved-up couple, who reportedly began dating at the beginning of the year, met on a ski trip.

And while Nico, 35, a stockbroker at Deutsche Bank, is not Pippa’s usual type, friends say he is a “real catch”.

“Nico comes from a totally different background to Pippa’s other boyfriends, but he can run well with the best of them,” a friend of Nico’s told the UK’s MailOnline.

“He is tall, good-looking and has the most amazing piercing blue eyes. He is incredibly charismatic and stands out from the crowd. He is a really good catch. Everyone is after him.”

So, with a besotted beau, a six figure publishing deal under her belt and a lucrative new column in Waitrose magazine in the UK, it looks like Pippa is in for a busy year ahead.

Brangelina’s licence to wed!

Brangelina’s licence to wed!

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are reportedly hurrying their wedding plans after claims Brad purchased a marriage licence last month.

In accordance with the licence, he and Ange have just 90 days to make it official!

“Brad and Angelina left themselves short of time to sort out their wedding because of the licence deadline. A few months is nothing when you’re planning a wedding — especially one as major as theirs,” a source told The Sun newspaper.

With the licence expiring at the end of May, the couple’s big day could clash with Jennifer Aniston’s wedding to fiance Justin Theroux.

“Everything points to [Brad and Angelina] getting married in May just after the Cannes Film Festival ends, because they’ve got their hearts set on tying the knot in France,” the source adds.

Jennifer and Justin are also believed to be planning their wedding for May, and have been busily preparing for months. If both weddings take place at the same time, there could be a battle for A-list guests.

“All that goodwill would go out the window if Brad’s wedding date comes close to hers. Jennifer will see it as an attempt to upstage her, and there will be a battle over Hollywood guests,” the source says.

If both weddings occur at the same time, not only will there be rivalry over the celebrity guest list, but also over the wedding dress.

Jennifer seems to be winning the wedding planning race at the moment, having already chosen the rings and her dress. But Brad was seen in Paris over the weekend, black folder in hand, visiting several shops, including an interior design consultancy.

But Brange could have a problem if they want to marry in the chapel on their $50 million Chateau Miraval estate in France… French law prohibits couples from tying the knot anywhere except in a town hall.

Aussie parents give son $45k sex change gift

Aussie parents give son $45k sex change gift

Ashley Caccamo’s transgender dream is finally a reality, thanks to her family’s love and support.

As a little boy, Ashley Caccamo prayed each night that he would wake up as a girl. That wish has finally come true for the pretty 24-year-old graphic designer from Sydney – and it was her understanding parents who came to her rescue. Mum Rachele, 52, and dad Vince, 57, shelled out $45,000 for Ashley’s facial feminisation surgery in the US. She had cheek implants, rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), a brow lift and adjustments to her jawline, chin and hairline.

“When I saw my reflection for the first time post-surgery, I was so happy,” says Ashley, who is saving for gender reassignment surgery. “It felt like a victory inside. It was so fantastic to see myself the way I’d always wanted to.” Ashley documented three years of transition in a time-lapse video posted on YouTube, called MtF 3 year Timeline. To date, it’s had more than 4.5 million views. “It’s taken a lot of guts and determination for Ashley to have done all this,” says her mum. “It can’t have been easy on her – she was terrified we’d abandon her, but as a family we stick together – that’s what it’s about, after all.”

Rachele remembers Ashley – or Adam, as she was known growing up – as a very loving, thoughtful and outgoing child. She had lots of friends and her parents always assumed she was happy. But Adam was harbouring a big secret. He had gender dysphoria – a profound unhappiness with the gender he was born into.

“I was a girl trapped in the body of a boy,” explains Ashley. “I was consumed with the idea of being a girl, and used to sneak into my older sister’s room to try on my favourite dresses.” Puberty proved an emotional roller-coaster. “I couldn’t work out whether wanting to be a girl was OK or totally abnormal,” she says. Ashley spent her teen years being anxious, withdrawn and depressed. Her parents were beside themselves with worry.

Read more about Ashley’s sex change in this week’s Woman’s Day on sale Monday March 11, 2013.
