His Royal Baldness: Prince Harry losing his hair

His Royal Baldness: Prince Harry losing his hair

Prince Harry's hair is thinning on his crown.

He publicly pokes fun at big brother William’s receding hairline but Prince Harry will soon be on the receiving end of bald jokes.

Photos of the 28-year-old royal in Africa last month show his hair is noticeably thinning on the crown, suggesting his famous ginger locks are succumbing to the male pattern baldness that has plagued William and their father Prince Charles.

Leading British hair loss expert Dr Asim Shahmalak says Harry’s hair began thinning in 2011, with his growing bald spot clearly visible in footage from the royal wedding.

Dr Shahmalak says the Windsor family history made it almost inevitable that Harry would lose his hair eventually, and predicts Harry will be “significantly” bald by the time he is 40.

“There is a strong family gene on both sides of Harry’s family,” Dr Shahmalak told the Daily Mail newspaper.

“He is lucky that it has kicked in a bit later than his brother William – but the signs are not good for Harry.

“If Harry’s hair loss progresses in the normal way, I would expect him to have a significant bald patch around his crown by the time he is 40. It will be worse if it also spreads to his hairline as it has with his brother.”

More worryingly, Dr Shahmalak says going bald can have a massive psychological impact on young bachelors.

“Hair loss can have a devastating impact on a young men like Harry,” he said. “It can shatter their confidence and lead to significant loss of self-esteem.

“Their options in covering up their baldness are limited. It would be difficult for Prince William, for instance, to shave his head, which is what a lot of men do to hide their baldness. A royal with a crew cut just doesn’t seem right somehow.”

Harry has frequently joked about his brother’s hairline, once quipping William was “already bald aged 12”.

McLeod’s Daughters reunion: Look at us now!

McLeod’s Daughters reunion: Look at us now!

It’s been 11 years since the series burst onto our screens, and the girls of Drover’s Run are as gorgeous as ever.

At one point, you could switch on a TV almost anywhere in the world and you’d see an episode of McLeod’s Daughters, the sweeping romantic drama series celebrating the pioneering spirit of Aussie women on the land. “I’m still getting mail from the Netherlands, Germany and Italy,’’ laughs Michala Banas, who played Kate. “I think it was such a great thing to be a part of, because lots of things come and go, but this had a lasting effect on people.’’

Michala left halfway through the final season, in 2009, but fans are still smitten with the series’ strong and independent female characters. “I was petrified when I got the job, because it involved horse riding, sheep, cows and dirt. I’m a city girl, and I really didn’t know anything about that stuff,’’ she admits. “So I learned more than I can tell you. I can drive a tractor and I can –badly – shear a sheep!’’ Michala can’t believe it’s around 10 years since Lisa Chappell and Jessica Napier left the show, as they’ve barely changed – though Lisa has lopped off her locks. But it’s Bridie Carter who really amazes her.

“Bridie looks exactly the same – it’s quite remarkable,’’ she says. “But then, they all look remarkable. I think it’s inevitable that we have all changed, but my time on McLeod’s really does seem just like yesterday.’’ Bridie, Lisa and Jessica were in the original cast, which included Rachael Carpani, Aaron Jeffery, Myles Pollard, Sonia Todd, John Jarratt and Brett Tucker. Simmone Jade Mackinnon joined in Season 3, while Matt Passmore, Luke Jacobz and Abi Tucker starred in later seasons. “I still miss Claire,’’ says Lisa of her character, who was killed off in a truck accident in 2003, leaving fans shattered.

“I loved playing her, but she was very different to me. She wasn’t very feminine, but I’m very feminine, expressive and communicative. I tend to spend a lot of my time ‘in the clouds’. ” “McLeod’s ignited my love with the countryside,’’ says Bridie, who left the show in 2006 after nursing her first-born, Otis, on set. Jessica agrees: “It was so beautiful to be in the country and surrounded by animals. And you never knew what to expect – it would go from dust storms to rain and extreme heat. It was tough, but I loved my time there.’’

MKR’s Kerrie and Craig: Our hot romance

MKR's Kerrie and Craig: Our hot romance

These former teenage sweethearts are still head-over-heels.

They met in primary school, started dating as teenagers, married more than 30 years ago and are now doting grandparents. Yet feisty foodies Craig and Kerrie are still as crazy about each other as they were the day they wed.

As if that’s not hard enough to believe, how’s this – Craig, 52, a businessman from Melbourne, credits his mum for passing on the secret to keeping things in the marriage, er, interesting.

“We had kids at a pretty young age, and my mum always said, ‘Whatever you do, try and get away every six to eight weeks for a weekend on your own,’” he tells Woman’s Day. “That could have just been at home while she came to mind the kids, or we might have gone to stay in the city and gone out for dinner. But those two days alone together have always been great for us.”

Sounds good to us, and it clearly works for Kerrie, too. “Craig’s mum always reminded us not to forget about each other,” says Kerrie, 53. “We still get away on our own, and it’s been the best advice anyone could have given us. It helps us to reconnect and remember why we got together in the first place.”

Naomi and Nicole: Best friend betrayal

Naomi and Nicole: Best friend betrayel

Nicole and Naomi’s special friendship is no more, as envy and mistrust rip them apart.

Hollywood can be a rough place. Actors are warned to trust no-one, and many report never knowing who their real friends are. That’s why it was so refreshing to see Australian actresses Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman, who met at a casting call 31 years ago, share a genuine, lasting friendship.

But sadly, even their relationship has ended, after the pressures of life on the A-list finally became too much. Now the Aussie superstars are at each other’s throats in a public war of words that has shocked those closest to them. Drifting apartRumours of a falling out first surfaced in February, when Nicole claimed she was too busy to take part in a 60 Minutes segment honouring Naomi for her Oscar-nominated role in The Impossible, a once-in-a-lifetime performance set amid the tragedy of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.

But last week, Naomi made their rift public when she took a swipe at actresses who have used Botox to stay looking young – something Nicole has previously admitted to. “Most of the characters I play are going through some kind of emotional turmoil, so my job requires me to have expression. If my face was frozen, what right do I have to play that part?” she sniped to Good Health magazine.

“All the women who haven’t done anything to their faces are still able to play great roles. And some of the ones who have done something have messed it up – they look freakish.” Understandably, Nicole did not take the comments well. One friend described her as “a mixture of livid and hurt”, but multiple sources close to Nicole and Naomi say this is just the latest blow, with the recent Oscar awards pinpointed as the moment Nicole and Naomi’s almost lifelong friendship finally dissolved.

Lisa Curry and Michelle Bridges: Fat fight cat fight!

Lisa Curry and Michelle Bridges: Fat fight cat fight!

Forget the battle of the bulge on The Biggest Loser. There’s a real war brewing between former Olympian Lisa Curry and trainer Michelle Bridges.

Fired up by trainer Michelle Bridges’ take-no-prisoners approach towards the contestants on The Biggest Loser, former swim star turned fitness guru Lisa Curry has slammed the show as “disgraceful”. Lisa believes the show, in a quest for better ratings, belittles and humiliates people who need care and support and reckons Michelle should apologise to the contestants she has berated.

“It’s wrong!” Lisa, 50, tells Woman’s Day. I just think it’s a disgraceful display when you are in a leadership role as a trainer. I don’t like it at all. I think it’s gone a bit far – maybe they’re struggling with the ratings.” As for whether Michelle’s approach could be described as “tough love” – as international model Megan Gale tagged it on Twitter – Lisa scoffs at the term.

“You have to put yourself in their shoes, walk a week in their shoes, and feel the hurt that they feel every day and you might treat them with a little more respect,” she says. Lisa vented on social media last Sunday after watching Michelle tell Brett to “either go down man-up road or pussy street”, that he was “embarrassing himself” before ordering him out of the room.

“OMG… you DO NOT belittle people on National TV Biggest Loser…. I cannot believe some of the comments coming from the trainers mouths…. I hope Michelle apologises to that guy. These people need encouragement and support not ridicule…. #nothappy” Lisa wrote. “I felt for that young boy so much it made me so angry!” she explains to Woman’s Day. Lisa said while she had nothing against Michelle personally, in her own coaching and personal training business she would never speak to people like that.

In a statement, Ten said it was unfair to focus on “one line spoken by Michelle”. “Anyone who watched [that episode] would have seen Michelle being tough and fair on the contestants, and showing a lot of support, encouragement and concern,” the spokesperson said.

Brad and Angelina: They did it!

Brad and Angelina: They did it!

The smile said it all when Ange emerged last week proudly showing off her wedding band.

When in November last year, Brad Pitt said of marriage to Angelina Jolie, “The time has come… the time is nigh. It’s soon,” it now appears he was far from joking. Hollywood watchers went into a spin when Ange stepped out last week wearing, for the first time since their engagement a year ago, a shiny gold wedding band on her ring finger. The king and queen of Tinseltown had finally made their eight-year relationship official!

In a shock revelation, it has just emerged that the most photographed couple in the world managed to marry under a shroud of secrecy in a tropical paradise. Angelina made the very public confirmation of their exciting news on a charity trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo. In place of the $250,000 engagement sparkler Brad gave her in April last year, she proudly and deliberately showed off an unmistakable wedding band to waiting photographers.

Now those closest to Brad, 49, and Angelina, 37, are finally able to share details of what was a breathtakingly romantic wedding. “I didn’t want to be the one to give away their secret,” one member of their inner circle tells Woman’s Day under the condition of anonymity. “Brad and Ange knew that if they planned a big Hollywood wedding it would turn into a zoo. They were always doing this for their kids and the last thing they wanted was paparazzi helicopters hovering overhead and security guards everywhere.”

So the family stole away to the Caribbean paradise of Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos Islands at Christmas, where they said “I do”. “They got married at a beautiful beachside estate that belongs to their friend [fashion designer] Donna Karan,” reveals our source. “No other stars were present. The only guests were the kids, Brad’s parents Jane and Bill, his brother Doug and Doug’s wife Julie.”

Easter is over – so put down the chocolate!

Easter is over and even if you still have the bunny’s paws left to eat, have some mercy on the bunny… and your waistline!

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying a moderate amount of the “occasional foods” that each occasion delivers. When the occasion is over though, and particularly if you’re watching your weight, it’s time to resume everyday eating.

Here in Australia there’s a danger of slipping into poor eating habits from Easter straight through to Anzac Day.

It’s a great excuse — especially if you’re observing school holidays too. – What’s the point trying to lose weight when there’s more celebrating left to do in a couple of weeks time?

It’s the attitude of anyone who doesn’t see their “diet” as an everyday way of eating — all the time for the rest of your life.

It’s the “stop eating well, start eating well” approach that leads to extreme behaviour, guilt and bad habits — the difference between having no birthday cake, enjoying a small piece of birthday cake and eating a piece of cake and the rest of it as well; the difference between denying yourself any Easter eggs, enjoying a couple of little ones, and eating every egg that comes within your grasp.

There will always be holidays, birthdays and other reasons to celebrate and it’s perfectly legitimate to do so.

With regular exercise, healthy everyday eating and a moderate approach to occasional treats, we can enjoy the fruits (or foods) of every occasion without the guilt.

So stop eating the eggs and buns, resume everyday eating practice and when Anzac day comes you can happily enjoy an Anzac cookie with your coffee.

Beyonce thinks anyone should be able to put a ring on it

The ‘Single Ladies’ songstress is one of many celebrities expressing their stance on gay marriage, voicing her support by posting a handwritten note on her Facebook page.

“If you like it you should be able to put a ring on it” she wrote on a red background and posted online.

The pictures — a play on the lyrics of the 2008 hit when she sang “if you like it then you should have put a ring on it” — has garnered almost 115,000 likes and been shared by more than 33,000 fans.

The US Supreme Court has concluded the second of two hearings concerning gay marriage, as nine judges prepare to deliver a decision over California’s Prop 8 ban on same-sex marriage, and a bid to overturn the Defence of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as ‘between a man and a woman’.

Thousands of supporters have descended on the Supreme Court in Washington to show their support for gay marriage, outnumbering protestors, and many celebrities have voiced their support on social media.

“Today I’m thinking of the Supreme Court” tweeted Ellen Degeneres on Tuesday as hearings began.

“I hope they remember what makes our country great, and support equality for all.”

Celebrities like Madonna and Kristen Bell have voiced their support on social media, and Facebook and Twitter users worldwide have changed their profile pictures to this:

Equal love

America’s Human Rights Campaign changed its well known blue and yellow logo to a red and pink version on Facebook, and it has since been shared more than 100,000 times.

“We never expected anything like this — for it to go viral,” HRC spokesperson Charlie Joughin said.

“Red is a symbol for love, and that’s what marriage is all about.

“We wanted to give people an opportunity to show their support for marriage equality in a public and visible way.”

The Supreme Court has heard two cases calling for change in same-sex marriage laws, concluding hearings on Wednesday.

The mostly conservative leaning judges have dropped suggestions they are in no hurry to make changes allowing same-sex marriage, but supporters are hopeful for a positive outcome for equal rights, even though decisions on each case could take months.
