The much-loved House Husbands star tells how her family beat cancer.

As Julia Morris and husband Dan Thomas sat in a doctor’s waiting room a few days before Christmas last year, they never imagined their lives were about to be changed forever. A few minutes later, Dan was told he had breast cancer. “It was a huge shock,” says the 44-year-old comedian and actress, during a candid chat with Woman’s Day on the Melbourne set of her hit TV show House Husbands.

Welsh-born comedian and illustrator Dan never dreamed he’d hear the C-word when he returned to the doctor after a minor, unrelated operation. “He’d had an umbilical hernia operated on,” Julia recalls. “The surgeon, who’s a really old family friend, said, ‘I might just take that [breast lump] out anyway.’” The diagnosis – which accounts for less than one per cent of all cancers in men – was truly a bolt from the blue. “When we went back to see the surgeon, we were laughing and joking. He kind of had to bring us under control to have a moment.”

Almost four months later, Julia and Dan, who have two daughters, Ruby, 6, and Sophie, 4, are counting their blessings. “He’s made a slow, but terrific recovery,” Julia reveals. “And you know what? He’s terribly, terribly lucky. We’ve definitely had a full reset of, you know, ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff.’ “You don’t need an illness to remind you [of that], but it’s pretty hard – if you wake up alive, you are living the dream. The rest is whatever you make of it, every single moment.” And funnygirl Julia truly believes that laughter is the best medicine. “Humour has got us through it, even though it’s not a funny disease,” she says.

“It’s not your dream come true, obviously – it’s not the best news. But I think you try to keep everything normal because something so abnormal is happening to you. Maybe that’s what it is. “I don’t even think we still have realised properly what’s happened to us. We’re getting a vague understanding of it… you just go to ‘business as usual’, particularly if you have little people.”

“Connor only seems interested in partying. His best friend is a sleazy nightclub promoter about 20 years older than him who dates porn stars and, as you can imagine, Tom doesn’t like it one bit.” It’s not as if Tom hasn’t given his son a shot at keeping out of Hollywood’s seedier side. “He did everything he could to set Connor up as the next big thing in Hollywood,” says our source.

A new movie portraying the Danish prince’s secret love life leaves his wife devastated.

As she stepped out of her chauffer-driven car to attend an Easter church service last week, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark was forced to grit her teeth and smile at waving onlookers, despite grappling with news that has left her family life in tatters.

The 41-year-old Australian mother of four was left reeling when it was revealed in the Danish press that a movie exposing her husband Crown Prince Frederik’s playboy past is in the works, with researchers digging for dirt among his numerous past conquests. “My ambition is to tell the story factually and realistically and not only as a glamorous fairytale,” filmmaker Christian Tafdrup, who has finished a first draft of the script, tells Danish magazine Her & Nu.

Before meeting Mary, then a down-to-earth Tasmanian-born real-estate agent, at a Sydney pub during the 2000 Olympics, the heir to the Danish throne was known as a ladies’ man, with seven girlfriends and several more flings notched on his bedpost. It is believed that Mary, who has worked so hard to assimilate Danish culture and learn royal tradition, is devastated that his exploits could be splashed across the big screen.

But so far Christian has refused to confirm which secrets will be spilled in his film, except to say that it will cover Frederik’s early, hard-partying days. “I can’t tell which people in the prince’s life the movie involves, or what events we’ve chosen to tell,” he says in an interview with Danish newspaper Politiken.

The Voice coaches take their relationship to the next level – and it’s heating up! How will they act now the show’s returned?

It started with a kiss on the red carpet at last year’s TV Week Logie Awards, and now set insiders say Delta Goodrem and Seal have reignited their romance – and can’t keep their hands off each other. “Seal has always been very affectionate towards Delta, but this is different. They’ve been spotted holding hands on set,” a source tells Woman’s Day. “Their chemistry is so apparent and they look like love-struck teenagers. No-one would be surprised if they were more than just friends.”

Since meeting last year as coaches on The Voice, Delta and Seal have been spending time with one another, here and in LA. But when they stepped out together last month for the launch of the US version of the show, the feelings between them were obvious to all. “They were all over each other,” reveals a source. “It was a flirt fest!” The public displays of affection continued last week with the pair spending time together over Easter and Delta posting a cute photo of them both wearing bunny ears.

The pair are going to great lengths to hide their blossoming romance, with a Channel Nine spokeswoman playing down their relationship. “The picture tweeted over Easter was a shot that was taken by production for production and she was asked to tweet it out on the show’s behalf,” she said.

The coaches, both single – Delta, 28, has split with The Voice host Darren McMullen and Seal, 50, is said to be solo after a brief romance with Power Rangers star Erin Cahill – have made no secret of their mutual admiration. “With Delta I took a liking to her straight away for many reasons,” Seal told Woman’s Day last year. “Firstly, she is very beautiful, but she is also quite vulnerable. Delta is quite strong… has a strong voice and a strong personality but [also] this air of vulnerability and that is why people warm to her.”

CrossFit Week 12: And the winner is…

So for the last week of my challenge it was all systems go. Nicole was back in action and driving me to do my best.

I purposely booked the photo shoot and my Dexascan for the very end of the week. Every day counts after all and with the fine-tuning to my diet my body was really responding and I still felt like I was getting stronger with every workout.

At the beginning of the week we videoed Paul taking us through a full workout so you could see what a CrossFit class is like first hand. Thanks to all the CrossFit Athletic members who were willing to get sweaty with me in front of a camera. I think even Byron, the videographer, got a workout running around after all of us.

Lights Camera Action

Pete came on board for my last photo shoot at the gym. Ever the encouraging trainer, Pete had me reach all kind of personal bests including pushing my body weight on the Prowler. What was he thinking… ouch! My legs were sore for days.

The poor make-up artist had to keep wiping me down for sweat but we powered through. Pete kept coming up with good ideas for cool looking exercises and it turned out to be a workout in itself. Styled up by Gracie and shot by Julie I have to admit that I never have, nor ever will look this good again during a workout.

The Proof is in the Dexascan

So I was kind of dreading getting back up on the scanning table and at the same time I was incredibly curious. There’s no shifting from foot to foot on this kind of scale… the Dexascan doesn’t lie. So (drum roll please) I lost over 8 kilos of body fat and gained about 2 kilos of muscle mass. At first I wasn’t sure if this was that great but when Luke at MeasureUp compared it to 32 bricks of butter I started to feel a bit better.

The boys at the gym were eager to see the results and their feedback and encouragement made me feel even better. They were really impressed and reminded me that my health issues (insulin resistance and adrenal fatigue) made the specific training approach and slow steady loss important.

Paul: “8kg body fat is unreal, think that it would have taken 8 weeks for the body to start to change and now it is doing so is amazing. I have never seen such a big change from anyone over this period of time”

Christian: “What you have done is amazing. You lost 7% Body Fat and 7 kg! Quite clearly what you are doing is working! Yes you have more work to do, but to get the results that you did is unreal. You were a special case, and with Paul’s nutrition assistance and your dedication to the cause, I think you have done fantastic! Remember we are building for the future, not like a biggest loser type deal. Sure you could have got more off quicker, but it would go back on quicker.”

Pete: When he got the impression that I was disappointed with my results Pete was on the phone to me immediately reassuring me that my results were outstanding and to snap out of it. I had to explain that in the past I had lost much more weight really quickly but inevitably I had always but it back on and then some. I had my heart set on reaching 70kg, which I didn’t quite make but at the rate I’m going it will just be a couple more months. My goals have changed it’s not just about getting skinny like I wanted when I was younger. Now it’s about being super healthy… for the rest of my life, and I feel like I’m on the right track for the first time ever.

What’s next for this caped crusader?

As the elite members of the gym prepare for the CrossFit Regional Games I can still watch in awe as they do things I consider humanly impossible. The difference is that I can now do things that were 100% impossible for me only 12 weeks ago.

Some weight loss has been achieved, my body composition has shifted drastically and I’m stronger than I’ve ever been in my life. Am I going to stick with it? Hell yeah! I still have a ways to go to reach my goals but I can’t wait to see where I’ll be in a year. I may not be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound but I’ll be happy with a few box jumps and a double under or two.

Everyone agrees the training has been going great but I still haven’t reached that magical point where my muscles start devouring my body fat while I sleep and I wake up skinny.

This may be a myth but after over two months on the program with no slacking off I really had my heart set on seeing more visible physical changes apart from my strength gains.

A few weeks ago I whinged about my lack of weight loss to the boys and Paul Walton agreed to take a closer look at my nutrition. I sent him a week’s worth of my food intake this time including quantities and meal times along with my training program and results. Which looked like this:

Saturday

5:30am Breakfast: 1 hardboiled egg and decaf coffee with Lactose free milk.

6:45am CROSSFIT: A. For Total Time 10 Alternating DB Snatch (10kg) 20 Wall Ball 200m Row/Run Rest 90s X 4 Alternate the run and row. My time: 14min 48 sec. Cal 457 calories from fat 23% Avg HR 139 Max HR 184.

8:30am Brunch:2 poached eggs, 1/2 avocado, wilted spinach, 2 pieces bacon and large soy decaf cap.

11am-4pm Nap

5pm snack: 1/4 cup almonds and cup of black tea with LF milk.

9:30-10:30pm: Dinner: Birthday party including snacks of cherry tomatoes, macadamia nuts, baby pickles, ham and cheese with mineral water.

Feedback:

As Pete had told me Paul’s initial feeling was that my diet was very clean. If I wanted to start dropping more weight I would need to make some changes though. The first thing he noticed was that I still had a very high fat content in my diet. To compensate for the lack of carbs it’s true that I tend to indulge in fattier food.

All the healthy fats of course but Paul explained that the avocado, nuts and cheese I was adding to my meals was definitely hindering my weight loss attempts. Healthy fat is still fat I guess. He instructed that nuts should be treated like a garnish if at all and the eggs I was having for breakfast had enough fat in them, I didn’t need to be adding to it with avocado or cheese.

He also put the nail in the coffin of my last coffee. He explained that with my adrenal fatigue issues I wasn’t doing myself any favours by revving myself up with coffee (even decaf) first thing in the morning. The soymilk in my occasional cappuccino was also a hindrance on the weight loss front. He said if I really wanted one I could have one late morning (after 11am) and it would have to be black… thanks but no thanks, Herbal tea here I come. Carb Loading/Loving

To my surprise he also wanted me to start adding some carbs back into my diet but in a very targeted way. Now after each of my training sessions I’m to add a banana to my protein shake and make it with water (not milk). I also have to finish sipping it down within 1/2 an hour of finishing my workout. This is a major shift from driving home, cooking, and having a late dinner… I love it already.

The big ask

Then came the big ask… at the end of every day I was to email him with the details of everything I had consumed. Eeek! How had I signed up for the Big Brother food police? But hey… I’ve got an “after” photo shoot in a few weeks so what the hell. I’ll follow it to the letter and see what happens. Within a week I was already seeing results with a kilo off on body weight and by week two I had dropped a couple of percentage of body fat – woohoo! I can totally do this. Meanwhile back at the ranch (AKA Crossfit Athletic)

I found myself out of my depth in a whole new way. My workout partner, aka the Batman I was so comfortable grunting and sweating in front of (this is worse for her than me I’m sure) was going off to have surgery with a long recovery period and I would be on my own. Everyone was friendly so I quickly partnered up with new friend but on the very first move… a push press no less… I tried to lift what she was lifting and through my neck out. Ooops and ouch!

As I’ve stated before I have a clumsy way about me and used to have chronic back pain so of course I have a back therapist on speed dial. If you have chronic back pain and have never heard of Dorn Spinal Therapy you should check this out (www.backcaresolutions.net).

It’s amazing. After years of chiro I had one session and I was pain free. Now I only have to go back if I do something silly trip over my own feet or lift what that girl was lifting… because if she can do it…

Barbara had me back at the gym without missing a session as long as I promised to do all the exercise evenly for a week (both arms or both legs at a time). Totally doable and I’m able to keep on track.

I did learn a valuable lesson… just because someone is the same height and looks similar to you physically does not mean that they aren’t a whole lot stronger than you. I now know my limits and only push above them conservatively so I keep making gains and not new injuries.

Halle Berry is pregnant with her second child at the age of 46.

The Oscar winning actress who is already a mother of one is set to expand her family with fiance Olivier Martinez.

“I can confirm that Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez are expecting a child,” Berry’s publicist said, but declined to offer any further details.

Entertainment website TMZ reports the actress is about three months pregnant, with speculation that the baby is a boy.

Five-year-old Nahla, Berry’s daughter, was born to model father Gabriel Aubry who has fought for her custody in a bitter legal battle since her mother made the decision to move to France.

Although her age might be a limiting factor, Berry has previously spoken about expanding her family, with Nahla expressing desire for a little sister.

“That’s the thing. (My daughter) is asking me,” Berry said during an interview on US talk show The Wendy Williams Show last year.

“Every night we pray to God, and she’s so sweet. She says, ‘God, please bring me a bunk bed and a baby sister.’ And I say, ‘I can do one of those thing, I know for sure! The other one we have to keep praying on’.

“What do you say to her when she wants that and can’t understand why God’s taking so long, you know?”

She also spoke about becoming a mother in her forties, saying she had no regrets about leaving having children until later in life.

“I’m a much better mother at 46, or 41 when I had [Nahla], than if I were 21 or 25,” she said.

“I was just a little baby, just trying to figure it out, trying to figure out who I was, let alone having the responsibility of trying to help another little soul develop and grow.

“I’m so glad I waited.”

Berry’s partner, 47-year-old Martinez, confirmed the couple’s wedding plans last March. It will be the actress’ third marriage.

Fifi Box has welcomed a baby girl.

“I’ve had a baby!” the first time mum told Hamish Blake, Andy Lee and Jules Lund on their annual Logies radio show this afternoon.

“It’s a little girl,” she told the trio live on air. “She came into the world at 2.30 this afternoon.”

Fifi, who started her maternity leave last week, says she was caught off guard with the arrival and is yet to pick a name for her daughter.

“What’s happened is, and you guys will find this hard to believe because you know me so well.. I’ve sort of been caught off guard and I don’t have the name ready,” she said.

Fifi, who was clearly emotional during the interview, says she is overwhelmed with her new arrival.

“She’s absolutely amazing, I know that everyone says this, but she is just perfect,” she said.

“I’m going to get a bit emotional guys. I’m looking at her now, she’s here and she’s just the most amazing thing that has happened to me.

“She is a little ray of sunshine, she is heavenly, she is gorgeous.”

Although she has never confirmed it, the father of FIfi’s child is well-known Australian former ironman Grant Kenny.
