ONJ’s new cancer heartache

ONJ's new cancer heartache

As Rona Newton-John fights for her life, her sister is by her side.

Olivia Newton-John is no stranger to cancer. She fought her own battle with the disease in the 90s and has since campaigned tirelessly to raise awareness and funds to help others. But last week, the singer faced the illness again, with the discovery her beloved sister Rona, 69, has brain cancer.

Cancelling a series of shows at the famous Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel, where she’s been filling in for Donny and Marie Osmond, the 64-year-old singer rushed to Rona’s side. In an official statement, Olivia confirmed the “very sad news” of her older sister’s diagnosis. “I have decided to postpone my forthcoming Las Vegas residency to spend time with her and our family,” she announced.

“As a cancer ‘thriver’ myself, as many people are, I am very aware of the importance of love, support and family during this journey she is about to begin. I want to thank everyone in advance for respecting our privacy during this difficult time.”

Olivia has talked often of her sister as being her rock over the years, the woman she turns to when things get tough and who is always there when she needs her. Rona was by Livvy’s side when she underwent treatment for breast cancer in 1992, when their father died of liver cancer the same year, and through Olivia’s divorce from husband Matt Lattanzi in 1995. Olivia also had her sister to lean on in 2005 when long-time partner Patrick McDermott disappeared on a fishing trip, and through her daughter Chloe’s battle with anorexia in 2007.

Kate shocks the palace: My baby, my way

ONJ's new cancer heartache

With her little one only 10 weeks away now, the Duchess is ripping up the royal rule book.

Kate Middleton became the first non-aristocrat in history to marry an heir to the British throne, and now her child is on track to become the first royal to begin life in a commoner’s home, rather than a royal residence. Few anticipated that mild-mannered Kate would have the gumption to tip royal traditions – in place for centuries – on their head in such a manner. But with her and Prince William’s first born just 10 weeks away, the Duchess of Cambridge has never felt more ready to take on the role as mother of the third-in-line to the throne and make it her own.

In an extraordinary break with protocol, it’s been revealed that the future king or queen’s first months will not be within palace walls – where the child and Kate would’ve been waited on hand and foot by a small army of maternity nurses, nannies and ladies’ maids.

Instead, Kate, with William’s blessing, will whisk her newborn to a place where privacy and discretion are guaranteed – her mum’s house. The new parents will have a chance to bond with the baby out of the public eye at Bucklebury Manor, the $7 million country estate bought by Carole and Michael Middleton last year.

“She feels safest and most secure there. And surely it’s not a bad thing that this little prince or princess will have a taste of life outside the royal family?” a source tells Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper, adding that Carole is “over the moon” at Kate’s decision to stay for six weeks while her apartment at Kensington Palace is under renovation. “Carole fully intends to be part of this baby’s life and Catherine plans to spend a lot of time with her parents,” the insider says.

I left my 21-year-old husband for a school boy

I left my 21-year-old husband for a school boy

Mum-of-three Jay Davenport married her second husband when he was 18. Her new fiance is even younger.

A big smile lights up Jay Davenport’s face as she recalls her Boxing Day engagement. Recounting every precious moment, she is giddy with excitement. There’s no doubt the 37-year-old mum-of-three from Mt Tamborine, Qld, is in love. But the shocking fact is her fiance, Jushon, was a 16-year-old high-school student at the time of the proposal – and Jay was still married to a 21-year-old!

“I do love him,” says Jay, shyly. “I just wish people would leave us alone. I haven’t broken any laws, we’re not hurting anyone, and we are really happy.” Jay first met Jushon when he was 15. A friend of her eldest daughter Skye, now 18, Jushon would park his bike in her backyard and was often in and out with Skye’s crowd. But falling on hard times, and with nowhere else to go, he ended up moving in.

“He’d been sleeping in the skate park for nine days,” Jay recalls. “And everyone knows my door is always open to people who are having a hard time.” The unlikely couple soon became friends, supporting each other through personal problems.

Jushon was trying to cope with a volatile relationship with his now-estranged mum, Jay with the breakdown of her second marriage just two years after saying “I do” to then-18-year-old Drew Lawson. “I just felt I could open up to her,” explains the shy teenager, who’s now 17. “I never open up to anyone, and it felt good.”

MKR: It was all set up!

MKR fake finals scandal!

If you think My Kitchen Rules is unstaged and authentic, you’re in for a big surprise!

Despite the show being pre-recorded, MKR’s winning team only found out they’d nabbed the grand prize at the same time as the rest of the nation – because two endings were taped! In a shock twist, it turns out the joy, the disappointment, and the “surprise” reactions we saw were all fake, set up by producers. In a bid to ensure the winner is kept under wraps until the show airs, alternative endings are filmed.

“After we applaud and cheer, the contestants leave set while the confetti is swept up and the cameras are reset,” explains a past contestant. “We then do it all over again for the other finalist couple.” “Contestants leave having absolutely no idea who has won until the finale goes to air,” reveals a set-insider. “It sometimes has to be filmed over and over, so the emotion looks real and not staged.”

Angela and Melina

Angela and Melina put up a united front against their arch enemies Sophia and Ashlee, but now, it’s a very different story. “They are no longer friends,” reveals an insider. “They had a huge bust-up after filming finished, which is a shame because these two were so close at the start.”

Josh and Andi

Some of this year’s standout contestants didn’t even apply to be on the show! “MKR talent scouts saw a quirky looking guy at the Perth airport and asked if he could cook,” a source tells Woman’s Day. “The guy said he couldn’t cook, but that his friend Andi, who was also at the airport, could. And so became Josh and Andi!”

Would you raise your baby nappy-free?

Would you raise your baby nappy-free?

Can you even imagine raising a child without nappies? An increasing number of Australia parents are doing just that, joining the US “diaper-free” movement and attempting to toilet train their kids from birth. Confused? Disgusted? So is Zoe Arnold.

I always feel a bit intimidated around hipsters. You know the type: unwashed hair, mismatched clothes, sipping a nut-milk latte while nibbling on goji berries. I never feel cool enough — also I think soap is a really good idea.

However, hipsters inevitably make babies like the rest of us, and give them fabulous names like Juniper and Rainbow. And they also have their own ideas about child-rearing.

Like nappy-free infants.

I’m not talking about babies having nice sun kicks in between nappy wearing. I’m talking about Elimination Communication, a method of toilet training that begins at birth.

C’mon.

The idea behind the method is that our babies make certain gestures or sounds before they need to “eliminate”, and it’s our job as parents to pick up on those sounds and lift them over a potty/toilet/bowl to do their business.

While I absolutely agree that disposable nappies are terrible for the environment, and arguably, cloth nappies are equally bad, the thought of not using nappies for either of my children almost makes me feel sick.

Just last week my youngest defecated during her swimming lesson. If we were following Elimination Communication I would have seen the signs and rushed her off to a toilet.

But what if I hadn’t?

Happily, she was wearing a swimming nappy, so none of the offending matter left her pants. Unhappily, I was still left to clean up the mess in the pool’s shower after class. A low point in my parenting experience thus far.

But I digress: back to hipsters who think they can toilet train an infant.

The Elimination Communication movement has received a bit of coverage lately, thanks to a group of parents in Brooklyn, New York.

The New York Times quoted one mother describing parties where people let their children go to the toilet in other people’s sinks.

Can imagine a social situation where you asked a friend if your child could poo in their sink? It’s beyond disgusting.

It sounds like an “only in America” story, but the nappy-free movement exists in Australia as well.

I have no issue if parents choose to practise this method in their own homes, but I do object when parents say it’s okay for their kids to publicly wee and poo in parks, or between parked cars. In an emergency, yes. As a general rule, absolutely not.

At the very least it’s a sanitation issue. There are reasons why we have better health outcomes than many other countries, and one of those reasons is that we don’t have faeces lying around our streets.

The nappy free movement is gaining momentum though, and last week the first annual “Diaper Free Week” was organised by a group promoting the practice.

Maybe I’m prudish about bowel movements, but I am ever grateful to the inventor of the disposable nappy, who makes motherhood just that tiny bit easier.

Geri Halliwell new AGT judge

Geri Halliwell new AGT judge

Geri Halliwell has been officially announced as one of four judges for the new season of Australia’s Got Talent.

Formerly known as Ginger Spice, Geri will replace Scary Spice Mel B, who was originally slated to make the switch from rival talent show The X-Factor. However, her contract with the Seven Network prevented Mel from making the move to Nine.

Geri admits she sought permission from her former band mate before confirming her seat on the show.

“She [Mel] actually said, ‘I just want you to know I think you should do it cause you’re gonna have a great time and I love Australia’,” Geri told A Current Affair.

The red-headed singer will join Kyle Sandilands, Dawn French and Timomatic on the judging panel for the 2013 season.

“I watch Britain’s Got Talent and I’m a fan,” Geri reveals. “I think shows like that are brilliant and I love the opportunity they give to normal, everyday people.

Sex, Drugs and Meditation

Sex, Drugs and Meditation

Sex, Drugs and Meditation by Mary-Lou Stephens, Pan MacMillan Australia, $32.99.

Anyone who read Eat Pray Love should be forgiven for never wanting to read another self-discovery book, especially not by a woman. That book was nauseating.

Yes, of course, like everyone else, I inhaled it, and even gave copies to friends.

It was so much fun to read, when everyone else was reading it. Only now do I think, hang on, what did that woman (the writer, Elizabeth Gilbert) actually have to complain about?

She starts the book on her knees in the bathroom, desperate not to be married anymore.

Gilbert hadn’t been married all that long. She had no children. There weren’t likely to be any terrible consequences if she just called the whole thing off.

And what happened when she called it quits, anyway? Gilbert immediately landed a lucrative book deal, enabling her to take a year off to travel to Italy (to eat spaghetti and gelato), India (to pray or, to be more accurate, meditate) and finally to Indonesia (the island paradise of Bali, actually, to fall in love with a handsome Brazilian man who is now her husband).

No wonder so many women feel bad about once liking that book (most will now say they always hated parts of it, and the movie with Julia Roberts even more).

All of which brings me to a new book by the ABC host, Mary-Lou Stephens. It’s the perfect antidote to Eat Pray Love, in that it’s written by an earthy, Australian woman with a proper set of problems in her background.

Sex, Drugs and Meditation is Mary-Lou’s quest to revisit, and to understand, her past, so she might stride into a better future.

She’s in her 40s, and although she’s already quit smoking and drinking and drugs, there’s still quite a bit weighing her down, namely guilt, and bad memories.

Mary-Lou grew up in an evangelical home with a mother who raised her hands and jiggled them at the ceiling, while wailing in tongues. She was made to fall on the floor during church rallies while the evil spirits in her were slayed.

Mary-Lou’s response to the strangeness of her childhood won’t surprise anyone: she started stealing money from her father’s coat pockets, and spending it on forbidden chocolate.

She took up binge-eating, secret eating, compulsive eating. Later, she became a shop-lifter, a drug taker, a drinker. She’d betrayed friends by sleeping with their boyfriends (she’d been so drunk she couldn’t even remember doing it). She knew loneliness, neediness, a broken heart, and bad relationships.

Then came bullying at work.

The basis of the book is Mary-Lou’s decision to sign up for 10-day retreat that required total silence … and reflection upon the life we’ve lived. The things we’ve done to others, and those that others have done to us.

The retreat that Mary-Lou chooses is not glamorous. It’s got simple, wooden beds, blankets that aren’t warm enough, and the food is simple, often raw, and served in small quantities.

There are moments when she wants to stop. As she says in the book (and on the back cover): “I could get up and walk out the door right now. No one could stop me. But then nothing would change. And everything has to change.”

It would give away too much to say how it ends. Suffice to say that Mary-Lou discovers, as so many women do, the pointlessness of living an unexamined life.

Her memories, her guilt, were chains hanging over her emotional development. They had physical weight. It’s fascinating to watch her lift them.

Gwyneth Paltrow Iron Man premiere

Gwyneth Paltrow ensured all eyes were on her in Hollywood last night, donning a slinky sheer dress with no underwear.

The 40-year-old actress strutted the red carpet at the Iron Man 3 premiere in a daring Antonio Berardi gown, which featured sheer side panels that exposed her legs from ankle to waist.

The see-through sides also made it abundantly clear that Gwyneth, a mother of two, was not wearing any underwear.

Though it looked demure from the front, the side-view left fans, and co-star Robert Downey Jr, blushing.

The designer was thrilled with how Gwyneth looked in the creation, praising her for looking “iconic” and not trashy or cheap.

“Gwyneth manages to bridge the gap of glamour and modernity,” Berardi told Grazia. “She makes things look iconic!

“I adore the side panels in this dress — they make everything a suggestion; just a flash of a curve, and a hint of leg movement, embodying a sensuality without any vulgarity.”

But fashion bloggers disagreed. Within minutes of Gwyneth’s arrival on the red carpet, social media was alight with criticism of the overly-daring gown.

“It is sheer. I see pelvic bone. Repeat: SHE IS WEARING HER PELVIC BONE AS AN ACCESSORY,” style website Go Fug Yourself wrote.

“It’s not even expensive-looking or flattering sheerness. Imagine it black. Imagine it white, like the front. Or navy, like the back. But no. It HAD to be an episode of ‘What Would J-Lo Do’.”
