A very pregnant Kate glowed and seemed quite clucky as she greeted children and toured the hospice’s facilities, and staff said she was “a natural” with the kids.

While William was on duty as a search and rescue pilot for the day, the couple are believed to have shared a private weekend together in Norfolk.

Children as young as four attending ‘preschool proms’

Children as young as four attending 'preschool proms'

For years the school formal or prom has been a rite of passage and the highlight in a teenager’s school life, but now children as young as four are engaging in the same tradition, with no expense spared.

In the UK, tots are having prom events when they leave preschool to mark the beginning of “big school”. The event is in every way similar to a high-school prom, complete with ball gowns, suits, a prom king and queen and even limousine transport.

Shops in the UK, including department store chain Debenhams, are working to meet the increasing demand with a range of prom dresses for “little ladies” starting at $70 and available for ages four and up.

And they aren’t your average party dresses either. Top designers such as Jenny Packham and John Rocha have created the miniature formal wear.

One UK preschool, Busy Bees nursery, posted details of the event on their website saying: “This year we celebrated in style with a fire engine limo! The children were able to take part in using the real fire hoses to spray water. Mr Mayhem once again joined us with his fun disco and party games.”

While this seems to be a growing trend for preschool children, some parenting experts are alarmed at the idea.

Author of Pink Brain, Blue Brain Lise Eliot expressed her concerns to The Times, saying she was concerned with the way proms reinforce gender stereotypes at such a young age.

“Dressing like a prom queen is not a healthy pastime for young children, in my opinion… by making kids dress according to the extreme of gender apparel, we are telling them that whether they are a boy or girl is their most important feature,” she says.

Sue Palmer, a former head teacher and author of 21st Century Girls, is concerned children growing up too quickly.

“[I] believe children should be making mud pies and not squeezing into sequins until at least puberty,” she says.

Your say: Has your child been to a preschool prom? Is it OK for children to have a prom when finishing preschool?

OCD as common as post-natal depression in new mums

OCD as common as post-natal depression in new mums

New mums have been warned about the dangers of post-natal depression for years, but new research suggests they are just as susceptible to another mental illness: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

A Northwestern University study found that 11 per cent of new mothers develop OCD, as many as those affected by post-natal depression.

Researchers from the Chicago university’s medical science team surveyed women at two and six weeks post-partum and found that they were five times more likely to experience OCD symptoms than the general population.

What starts as natural worries about the baby’s health and safety can quickly spiral out of control, leaving the mother unable to live a normal life.

“A compulsion is a response to those obsessive thoughts, a ritualistic behaviour that temporary allays the anxiety but can’t rationally prevent the obsession from occurring,” study author Dr Emily Miller said.

The most common obsessive thoughts were worries about dirt or germs, followed by compulsions to check that no “mistakes” had been made (many mothers reported checking and rechecking baby monitors are working and sterilising already clean bottles over and over again).

Other women described “intrusive thoughts” that they would unintentionally harm their baby.

“That can be emotionally painful,” Dr Miller said. “You don’t intend to harm the baby, but you’re fearful that you will.”

The researchers also noted that around 70 per cent of women who reported OCD symptoms also reported symptoms of post-natal depression.

They said this crossover suggests the existence of a larger postpartum mental illness that needs its own classification and research.

“There is some debate as to whether postpartum depression is simply a major depressive episode that happens after birth or its own disease with its own features,” Dr Miller said.

“Our study supports the idea that it may be its own disease with more of the anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms than would be typical for a major depressive episode.”

This is the first large-scale study of OCD symptoms in new mothers. A total of 461 women participated in the survey at two weeks and of those, 329 participated in the follow-up six month survey.

The research is published in the April issue of The Journal of Reproductive Medicine.

Matthew McConaughey reveals how he lost 25 kilos

Matthew McConaughey reveals how he lost 25 kilos

Matthew McConaughey has revealed how he lost an incredible amount of weight for his role as an AIDS sufferer in new movie Dallas Buyers Club.

The actor, who shocked fans when he stepped out looking scary skinny last year, lost more than 18kg – a quarter of his body mass – in a few short months by eating very little food for weeks.

“It was tough going, I’m not going to lie,” the 43-year-old admits. “The dieting was pretty hardcore. I was losing 7lb [3kg] every week.”

Throughout the slim down, Matthew ate few solid meals and his kilojoule intake was incredibly small.

“I’d have a Diet Coke, two egg-whites in the morning, a piece of chicken, then another Diet Coke. That was rough,” he said.

“I got down to nine-and-a-half stone [60kg] and I was always hungry, and irritable.

“My body resembled a little baby bird with its mouth open, crying ‘Feed me, feed me’ and you realise momma bird ain’t going to feed you. It’s hard.”

The actor, who once weighed a muscular 85kg, also trained by lifting and holding up weights for 15 minutes at a time.

“It takes a while for your body to understand that it has to feed off of itself and that you’re not going to give it something else from the outside,” he says of the experience.

“The most difficult part for me, the day seemed longer.

“I basically cut out meal times, which is part of our daily existence, so I felt like I had so much more time on my hands.”

The dramatic weight loss was inspired by his character Ron Woodroof, who was diagnosed with AIDS in 1986 and given just six months to live.

“I’ve been trying to get it [the film] made for the past four years, so it’s been a labour of love and I’m really happy how it’s turned out,” he says.

“Ron Woodroof was an incredible man, a contradiction in his own terms, who took on a death sentence and made a difference that has reverberated around the medical industry and the world. His story has fascinated me for years.”

By January 2013, shortly after the film wrapped, Matthew had regained 12kg thanks to a new diet of fish, asparagus, eggs, nuts and sweet potatoes.

Duchess Catherine goes baby shopping

Duchess Catherine goes baby shopping

With only 10 weeks to go until the birth of her royal bub, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, has been busy doing a spot of baby shopping.

Accompanied by her mum, Carole, she perused Blue Almond in upmarket South Kensington, a store said to create “magical rooms for children”. The duchess was seen leaving with a large white wicker Moses basket priced at $445.

The pair continued to browse baby stores before stopping for lunch at Zefi Mediterranean restaurant.

They were then picked up by one of Kate’s security guards.

The following day, the duchess was again spotted shopping for baby bits and pieces in Chelsea, where she spent several hours looking at car seats and strollers.

During the final weeks of her pregnancy, Kate is overseeing the final renovations on Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace.

The apartment will not be ready by the time she gives birth, and her and Wills’ current home, a cottage within the palace grounds, isn’t the ideal place to bring up a bub.

As a result, the duchess has decided to spend the first six weeks after her child’s birth living with her parents at their new Georgian mansion in Bucklebury, Berkshire.

With the help of a maternity nurse and her mother, Kate has told friends she can’t think of a better way to spend the first few weeks with her new baby.

“It’s where I feel safest,” she says.

The duchess is expecting in mid-July and will start maternity leave about a month prior.

Teen cancer sufferer becomes fashion sensation

Cancer sufferer Talia Joy Castellano is launching her own fashion label.

Cancer sufferer Talia Joy Castellano is launching her own fashion label.

Talia Joy Castellano was diagnosed with terminal cancer six years ago, but she hasn’t let her illness get in the way of her dream of becoming a fashion sensation.

The thirteen-year-old US girl started posting make-up tutorials on YouTube following her leukaemia diagnosis on Valentine’s Day in 2007, and has since clocked up almost 40 million views on her beauty channel.

Now, despite doctors telling the beauty queen she may have only four to 12 months to live, she is moving into the world of fashion, teaming up with Los Angeles-based designer Urban Chappa.

The budding fashionista told the Daily Mail that she wanted to “show young teens that they can express themselves through clothes”.

Talia, who describes her own style at “preppy”, “rocker” and “boho chic” is set to launch clothing range that “symbolises [her] sassy, brave and inspiring spirit of overcoming all odds”.

She caught the eye of Ms Chappa, who runs womenswear label Maison De Urbana and overcame breast cancer at the age of 19, after seeing the inspirational teen on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last year.

Ms Chappa then flew to Florida earlier this month to meet Talia at the Arnold Palmer hospital where she has been admitted with symptoms including nausea and vomiting.

“Even though she was sick in the hospital, we made the best of our time. She’s so full of life that it’s hard for me to imagine that she has cancer.

“We talked, sketched, worked on her line. My head hurts to know that she has to go through this and that she had so much she wanted to do and accomplish.”

Talia is looking forward to launching the collection in the coming weeks, with proceeds from sales going toward paying her exorbitant medical bills.

The brand will be called That Bald Chick, to reflect Talia’s hairless appearance.

The teenager maintains a positive attitude around her illness and fashion and beauty ventures, saying in one YouTube clip she has “got many benefits from [cancer]”.

“Having a YouTube channel, having to inspire people and having people look up to me … the journey of having cancer was amazing. But every journey has to end.”

Last year she was made an honorary CoverGirl ambassador, and was described by role model Ellen DeGeneres as an “inspiration”.
