Carla Bruni: “When I’m overweight I look ugly”

Carla Bruni has opened up about her body image battle following the birth of her daughter Giulia in 2011.

Carla Bruni has opened up about her body image battle following the birth of her daughter Giulia in 2011.

The former French First Lady, 45, put on 18kg while pregnant with her second child, and says the extra weight caused her self-esteem to plummet.

“I’m kind of tall, with good size shoulders, and when I am 40 pounds overweight, I don’t even look fat — I just look ugly,” Carla, a former catwalk model, told the new issue of Vanity Fair.

“Having children when you’re older is not easy.”

Carla described her pregnancy and the months immediately postpartum as “a very fragile moment” in her life.

Giulia was born in October 2011 when Carla’s husband Nicolas Sarkozy was gearing up for another Presidential campaign.

Carla found it incredibly hard to lose weight while being a good wife and mother, and when Nicolas lost the election to Francois Hollande she says she wondered if she should just “just stay fat and buy new pants”.

“It’s very hard to diet, being exhausted,” she said. “Being so tired and depressed, I didn’t even care about my hair and make-up.”

Carla eventually got her pre-baby body back and says she and Nicolas couldn’t be happier with their new little daughter.

“She is so Sarkozy,” she said. “Nicolas has found his master. I think between our age and the fact that she’s a girl, we’re both melting, basically, you know?”

Carla also has son Aurelien, 11, from a previous relationship.

Plus-size model graces the cover of Elle

Sexy in any size: Plus-size blogger launches sexy bikini designs

French-Canadian model Justine Legault on the cover of Elle Quebec.

Fashion magazines are not known for celebrating curves but Elle Quebec has bucked the trend by elevating a plus-size model to covergirl status in its most recent issue.

French-Canadian model Justine Legault, who wears the equivalent of an Australian size 16, is the first plus-size model to grace the cover of the mainstream magazine.

The 26-year-old beauty stands at 5’9″ and strikes a daring pose on the cover wearing only a classic white shirt and baring her thighs.

The French-speaking model was discovered at the age of 20 by an agency seeking a plus-size girl.

Her timeless look, with her long blonde locks, soft features and captivating green eyes, have seen Legault rise in the modelling world, fronting campaigns for Nordstrom, Macy’s and Avenue department stores.

“At my first photo shoot, I remember hearing the photographer call my agent on the phone and say, ‘Oh my god! We’ve got something here'” she said inside the pages of Elle.

In the interview, Legault explains that her skincare and fitness routine is “similar to that of other models”, but she also points out how she is different.

“Except that I love a good meal and I eat very well!”

The reaction to the cover has been overwhelmingly positive from readers and online admirers, but Legault reveals she has also had her fair share of criticism, and how she deals with it.

“How many times have people told me during an audition: “I don’t like your hair, I don’t like your teeth?

“I didn’t listen to those people I continued to have confidence in myself. I prefer to remember compliments from people who like me how I am and believe in me.”

Gwyneth Paltrow’s raunchy marriage advice

Gwyneth Paltrow has been praised as an "amazing advice-giver" over her tips on the key to a good marriage don't yell at your husband and give him oral sex.
Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow has been praised as an “amazing advice-giver” over her tips on the key to a good marriage — don’t yell at your husband and give him oral sex.

Appearing on Chelsea Handler’s talk show, the Oscar-winning actress was embarrassed over having an anecdote she told at a dinner party relayed on air.

“One of her friends is like ‘I got into a big fight with my husband and I went home and I just wanted to scream and yell.’,” host Handler said.

“And you were like, ‘Whateve ryou’re doing, do the opposite. If you feel angry, go at him with love and you give him a b—j–.”

Gwyneth, who is married to rocker Chris Martin, doubled over laughing and cried “Oh my God! What if my mother sees this show?”.

Handler joked she had already planned on sending a tape to her Paltrow’s mum.

The Oscar-winning actress’s usually squeaky-clean image was tainted earlier in the week when she shocked onlookers at the premier of her new film Iron Man 3 in a sheer dress that revealed she wasn’t wearing underwear.

The faux pas came just after she claimed People magazine’s coveted title of ‘world’s most beautiful women’.

“I was doing a show and I changed there… let’s just say everyone went scrambling for a razor,” Paltrow said in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres.

“So I went from being the most beautiful to the most humiliated in one day.”

Post-baby girdle use on the rise

Post-baby girdle use on the rise

New mums are embracing a different approach when it comes to getting their pre-baby bodies back — wearing an old-fashioned girdle.

Jessica Alba recently admitted she used a corset to get back her toned tummy and post baby figure, and it looks like she isn’t the only one.

“I wore a double corset day and night for three months,” she told Net-A-Porter last week. “It was brutal. It’s not for everyone. It was sweaty, but worth it.”

Girdles, mostly used by recovering liposuction patients to make sure the skin tightens properly, are being used by new mums to help shrink the belly, waist and hips, minimise stretch marks, accelerate the healing process, and decrease bloating and swelling.

But medical-grade compression shapewear can also be used to help the healing process following a C-section and encourage the stomach muscles to pull back in.

During pregnancy, hormones such as estrogen and progesterone cause the abdominal muscles to relax in preparation for birth, and remain in the body for up to six months after the baby is born.

Girdles and compression garments are said to work by drawing stretched muscles back in, and create a support structure for the torso.

Actress and model Brooke Burke is another girdle fan, revealing she wore Tauts Belly Wraps for 40 days after giving birth.

“It creates some compression, helps your uterus go back down to its original size and it helps the tummy go back much quicker,” she says.

Medical-grade compression shapewear can include anything from tight belly bands, to hook-and-eye corsets and pull-up girdles. Many are made from hypoallergenic fabric to prevent skin rashes and allow the skin to breathe.

While a girdle may help, Dr Edward R. Laskowski, who specialises in sports medicine, says diet and exercise are what really count when it comes to getting your figure back.

“Although you may appear thinner when you wear a girdle, the girdle doesn’t strengthen or tone your abdominal muscles,” he says on the Mayo Clinic’s website.

“Girdles just temporarily compress and redistribute fat and skin around the abdomen. When it comes to a flat stomach, diet and exercise – not undergarments – are what count.”

Your say: Have you used a girdle after giving birth? How did you find it?

Sofia Vergara reveals surrogate baby plans

Sofia Vergara has revealed she is planning to use a surrogate to start a family with her fiancé Nick Loeb.

The 40-year-old actress told the May issue US Cosmopolitan magazine that she has already had her eggs frozen in preparation for the surrogacy.

Sofia said she never thought she would have to turn to surrogacy, but was left with no choice after her cancer treatment in 2000.

“I already have a kid, so I never thought I would need to do that,” she told the publication. “But I will have to use a surrogate, because I had thyroid cancer and lots of radiation.”

Earlier this year, Sofia was forced to deny rumours she and Nick were already expecting a baby via a surrogate.

She confirmed they plan to have a baby one day, but would like to wait a while.

“I don’t want to wait forever, but not yet, because I’m working like an animal,” she said.

Sofia has a 20-year-old son from a previous relationship.

Sexy in any size: Plus-size blogger launches sexy bikini designs

Fashion blogger Gabi Gregg models her designs for SwimSuitsForAll. Picture: SwimSuitsForAll

If you thought sexy bikinis were only forSports Illustratedmodels, take it up with plus-size fashion blogger Gabi Gregg and she’ll teach you a thing or two.

The 25-year-old’s blogGabiFreshshot to fame last year with this post where Gabi, who wears a US size 18, showed stunning holiday snaps in her ‘fatkini’, inspiring full-figured women to dare to wear a two-piece.

“Don’t let body shame keep you from having a good time!” she wrote.

“I don’t expect everyone to feel comfortable in a two piece, but hopefully I can inspire some of you to take the plunge. I can’t tell you how freeing it is to just have fun without worrying about what other people think.”

Gabi did inspire women to don their bikinis, causing quite a sensation online with the tongue-in-cheek term ‘fatkini’ trending online following the post, and also caught the attention of the fashion industry.

This month she is launching a collection of bikinis with swimwear line SwimSuitsForAll, busting the age old body myths of what plus size swimwear should look like.

Forget daggy prints and unflattering saggy cover-ups, the plus size bikini collection is youthful and on-trend.

“I think swimsuit shopping can be horrendous if you’re going to stores that don’t offer your size, but finding a stylish option that fits you well can actually make you feel great!” she toldRefinery29.

“It can be tough to find on-trend bathing suits in plus sizes, and I hope this collection helps.”

Like her blog posts, Gabi hopes her range of swimwear can help bring confidence to women and shed light on misconceptions about women, body image and swimwear.

The unhealthiest diets revealed

The three unhealthiest diets revealed

The New Year always inspires women to shed the few extra kilos gained over Christmas, but health professionals are warning that not all diets are safe.

The Dietitians Association of Australia has called on 230 members to vote on the three worst diets. The Lemon Detox Diet was rated the worst, followed by the Acid And Alkaline Diet and then the Six Weeks To OMG Diet.

From a list of nine popular diets, the Lemon Detox Diet was voted as the “worst” for the second consecutive year, with 74 per cent of the dietitians voting against it. The diet involves replacing meals with a lemon detox drink.

The Acid And Alkaline Diet was next with 42 per cent of votes. This diet sees a number of food groups including carbohydrates and dairy eliminated form you eating plan, leaving you with not a lot to eat.

The Six Weeks To OMG Diet came in third with 40 per cent of votes. This diet includes avoiding fruit, taking cold baths to burn calories and skipping breakfast.

Dietitians Association of Australia spokeswoman and accredited practising dietitian Melanie McGrice said she hopes the results will deter women from trying fad diets as a quick fix to lose weight.

“Don’t put your health in the hands of celebrity-endorsed diets or products that make miraculous weight- and fat-loss claims,” she said.

“Like many things in life, good health takes perseverance and commitment to a healthy lifestyle.”

Melanie says that healthy eating teamed with exercise is always the best way to lose weight and keep it off.

“Start with small, sustainable changes like having more home-cooked meals and going for regular walks. Extreme diet measures are unnecessary and counterproductive,” she said.

Melanie suggests that if you are serious about losing weight it’s best to speak to your GP or visit an accredited practising dietitian.

“That way, your eating plan will be tailor-made for you so you’ll be giving yourself the best chance of sticking to your weight loss goals,” she said.

If losing weight is on your new year “to do” list, try approaching your weight loss with some of these tips from the Dietitians Association of Australia in mind:

  1. Avoid gimmicks or quick fixes. Being healthy takes time. If you’re lost, see an accredited practising dietitian for advice you can trust.
  1. Everyone wants that miracle diet that solves all problems. The truth isn’t sexy, but it works: A wholesome, nutritious, balanced diet.
  1. Carbohydrates are essential for effective brain function. Low carbohydrate diets won’t help you perform at your best.
  1. Get half vegetables, one quarter carbohydrates and one quarter protein on your plate at breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  1. No need to ban certain foods – you’ll only crave them more. Plan small amounts of “treat” foods into your week and take time to taste and enjoy them. Quality over quantity.
