Reese speaks about arrest

Reese talks speaks about arrest

In her first interview since her arrest, Reese Witherspoon admits she said “all kinds of crazy things” to the arresting officer and made an “unacceptable mistake”.

The usually squeaky-clean star was arrested in Atlanta on April 19 for disorderly conduct alongside her husband Jim Toth who failed to pass a sobriety test.

Speaking publicly for the first time about the incident, Reese revealed that she told the arresting officer she was pregnant and when he said he didn’t know who she was, she responded with, “You’re about to find out who I am.”

“It was just one of those nights – we went out to dinner and had one too many glasses of wine,” the 37-year-old explained.

“We thought we were OK to drive but we definitely were not. We are just so sorry this happened. We know better than that. It’s something that will absolutely never happen again.”

Reese admitted that she “had no idea” what she was doing that night.

“I saw him arrest my husband and I just panicked. I said all kinds of crazy things to the officer. I even told him I was pregnant. I am not pregnant,” she said.

“I had no idea what I was talking about and I am so sorry. I was so disrespectful to him. I have police officers in my family. I work with police officers every day. I know better.”

The pint-sized star said the worst part was having to explain the ordeal to her two older children Ava, 13, and Deacon, 9. Reese and Jim also have an eight-month-old baby, Tennessee.

“We are so embarrassed by it but we just had to tell them that when you make a mistake, you have to take responsibility. We were honest with them,” she said.

Despite speaking out about the incident, Reese is said to be “deeply embarrassed” about her arrest.

She has pleaded no contest to her disorderly conduct charge. Her 42-year-old husband, charged with DUI, has pleaded guilty.

Carrie Bickmore brought to tears over cancer that killed her husband

Carrie Bickmore on The Project

Carrie Bickmore was brought to tears during an interview on The Project last night revisiting brain cancer, an issue very close to the TV presenter who lost her husband to the disease in 2010.

The gold Logie nominee was passionate and emotional discussing brain cancer awareness week with renowned surgeon and brain cancer research pioneer Dr Charlie Teo.

“I lost my husband to brain cancer and I have to say, not only would a cure be wonderful, but a lot of the time when we were sitting in those waiting rooms we would remark at how young the people receiving treatment were,” she said.

“This really is a cancer that is hitting our younger population.”

According to the Cancer Council, brain cancer is the leading course of death in young people and accounts for more than one third of cancer deaths in children.

Dr Teo said more research needs to be done on the often forgotten disease that kills more women than breast cancer under the age of 39 and more men under 44 than any other cancer.

“Because we’ve done such poor research and so little research in brain cancer we have very few things to offer patients,” he said.

“We need to find alternatives and specific treatments so we can give people specific treatments for their disease.”

Dr Teo is one of only 11 researchers who will appear before US congress next week as part of Barack Obama’s brain mapping initiative, and plans to “impress upon them the urgency of funding brain cancer research”.

Carrie bravely spoke about the little known killer and the need for more research into brain cancer, urging Australians to get behind brain cancer awareness week.

“I don’t think people realise the mental and physical impact it has on people over time as the disease progresses,” she said holding back tears.

“It is fatal in most cases and I think a lot of people wouldn’t realise that.

“I think there’s a lot of focus on other cancers and I think this is a cancer that needs to be bumped up in terms of attention.”

‘Hideous’ new Queen portrait unveiled

'Hideous' new Queen portrait declared a 'disaster'

The latest portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

A new portrait of Queen Elizabeth has been branded a “hideous cartoon” by art critics.

The expressionist-style painting by Daniel Llywelyn Hall — who at 32 is the youngest person ever to paint the Queen — was unveiled at the Millennium Stadium in Wales yesterday.

It has been widely condemned by critics, with Steve Beauchamp declaring it a “disaster” while Martine Thomas said: “The Queen can’t be happy with that — it is shocking.”

David Frazier added: “I’ve never seen a royal portrait like that. It is a shocking portrayal — she looks like a caricature.”

Hall produced the painting after a sitting with the Queen at Windsor Castle late last year.

It was commissioned to mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation, which took place on June 3, 1953.

It is the 133rd official portrait of the monarch.

The painting comes just months after the Duchess of Cambridge’s first official portrait met with similarly dire reviews.

The incredible kidney transplant story ‘you couldn’t make up’

The incredible kidney transplant story 'you couldn't make up'

Veteran ABC journalist Mark Colvin is known for his storytelling and eye for a good yarn, and even he says the tale of his kidney transplant is something “you wouldn’t read about”.

In late 2011, the radio journalist had been on dialysis for some time and was told a kidney transplant was just about the only thing that could save him.

He received a donation from a friend, whose identity was revealed on 7.30 last night.

Mary-Ellen Field was famously sacked by Elle Macpherson for allegedly revealing information about the Aussie supermodel, but later it was revealed she had actually had her phone hacked by journalists at Britain’s News of the World newspaper.

When Colvin contacted her for an interview via Twitter following the 2011 revelation, he ended up getting a whole lot more out of the relationship.

After continuing to email each other — “like penpals” Colvin told 7.30 — the two formed a special bond and when they finally met while Ms Field was on holiday in Australia, she was seized by a desire to help.

“I really can’t explain it,” she said.

“I didn’t want him to die.”

Luckily, as with the “real bond” the two had formed as friends, they were an uncanny match for a transplant.

“It seemed too far-fetched almost. It seemed incredible,” Colvin said.

“It’s a huge thing to ask somebody to go through even if they’re offering.”

The pair went through with the successful transplant that saved Mark’s life in March this year, an act Ms Field considered one of the most important things she’s done in her life alongside marrying her husband and having her children.

“How often do you get to save a life?” she says.

“I think I owe her a debt of gratitude for the rest of my life,” Mark said.

“What else can I say? I’d give her anything.”

Ms Field’s identity as the donor was unknown to the public up until now, but the pair wanted to tell their story to show how straight forward an organ donation can be and how wonderful it was to both parties.

They both hope more people will come forward and become donors.
