Prince Harry joins Michelle Obama for Mothers’ Day

Prince Harry joins Michelle Obama for Mothers' Day

Prince Harry is used to a rock star welcome when he travels around the world, and adoring fans know the drill as well.

Hundreds of women crowded in Washington DC, jostling to get closest to Britain’s most eligible bachelor as he touched down in the US for his week-long tour.

But screaming teens and excited Capitol Hill staffers were no match for Michelle Obama, who true to her title was the First Lady to get to the Prince, welcoming the 28-year-old royal heartthrob into her home for a reception in honour of military mothers and their children.

Harry caused quite a stir on his arrival in Washington, where tweets from the capital saw an abrupt change in mood that caused women to go from giddy to grumpy after they were asked to leave the balconies of the Russell Senate Office building on Capitol Hill where they gathered to catch a glimpse of the Prince.

Former presidential candidate Senator John McCain said that though the Prince must be used to it, he himself didn’t anticipate such a reception from female staffers.

“He was kind of embarrassed [by the screaming], I think it’s a normal reaction,” Sen. McCain said.

“I’m sure it’s not the first time he has had that experience, but in all the years I’ve been coming here I’ve never seen such an unbalanced gender gap.”

Prince Harry was swiftly escorted to the scheduled White House charity event by the First Lady while the president himself was out of town.

The visit by the British soldier was kept secret from the 170 guests who were honoured by his presence.

“Well, surprise!” said the First Lady.

“It is an honour to welcome Prince Harry to the White House today. As you all may know, Prince Harry is a captain in the Army Air Corps in the British Armed Forces.

“In January he returned from his second deployment to Afghanistan.

“He has spent much of his time supporting our wounded warriors and the families of our fallen. This weekend he will be attending the 4th Annual Warrior Games at Colorado Springs.

“We are absolutely thrilled he could be with us today. He just arrived in DC. He only has a limited time here, but when he heard about this tea and all of you, he wanted to be here to personally thank you for all your service.”

Harry charmed military mothers and entertained children on the first official engagement of his US tour and continues with his jam-packed seven-day itinerary.

Prince Harry’s a hit in the US

Prince Harry has kicked off his nine-day tour of the US with a visit to Capitol Hill and a charity event hosted by first lady Michelle Obama.

His Capitol Hill appearance sparked screams from 500 fans and staffers who were keen to catch a glimpse of royalty. “’I’m sure it’s not the first time he has had that experience, but in all the years I’ve been coming here I’ve never seen such an unbalanced gender gap,” former presidential candidate John McCain said.

Harry then joined the first lady at an event held in honour of military mothers and their children in place of her husband President Obama.

His visit comes as Queen Elizabeth II cuts back on her official duties, turning to her son Charles and grandsons, William and Harry.

Male engagement rings now ‘very popular’ in Australia

Male engagement rings now 'very popular' in Australia

A quick browse through any online jewellery store reveals a surprising social trend — men are now, apparently, wearing engagement rings too.

If the sales pitch is to be believed, the days when diamond sparklers were presented only to betrothed women are well and truly over.

The modern Australian man now wears one too.

“Men’s engagement rings are now very popular,” the website for family-owned Queensland jeweller Gillett’s says.

Gillett’s — which sells an array of men’s engagement rings ranging in price from $820 to $3400 — also clarifies how the new jewellery should be worn, and which finger they should be worn on once the man in question is married.

“Men’s engagement rings are now often worn either together with a wedding ring, or worn on the wedding ring finger until the wedding day, when the engagement ring is then worn on another finger or the right hand.”

Astonishingly, this is not a trend confined to Australia. Men’s engagement rings are widely available across the US and UK and some celebrities are ever getting on board — Canadian singer Michael Bublé wore one for several months when he was engaged to Argentinean actress Luisana Lopilato.

The insistence that this is a growing trend leftGuardianjournalist Rupert Myers outraged enough to write a column on the topic this week.

Myers insists we should be wary of “man-gagement” rings because while they advertising material speaks of love and commitment, the whole concept is nothing more than a “canny attempt by the diamond industry to double its earnings”.

“I was forced to consider whether this was merely a natural result of the evolution of metrosexuality, or a canny attempt by the diamond industry to double its earnings,” Myers writes.

“Of course men should purchase and wear whatever makes them feel happy, and couples should celebrate their love however they feel most important to them, but we should remain suspicious of anyone claiming to be selling us an expensive shiny solution to a problem that we didn’t really know existed.

“That’s how fortunes are made, but not necessarily progress.”

Who wore it better Kim K or Robin Williams?

Who wore it better Kim or Robin Williams?

The floral Givenchy gown Kim Kardashian wore to the Met Gala has attracted a lot of attention – but for all the wrong reasons.

Funnyman Robin Williams is even getting in on the joke, comparing her dress to the one he wore in hit 1993 movie Mrs Doubtfire.

The 61-year-old comedian recently tweeted a picture of the two dresses, saying, “I think I wore it better.”

Kim’s custom gown, which included matching floral gloves and heels, was designed by Riccardo Tisci. He’s come out swinging in defence of the look.

“I think she looked amazing,” Tisci told Women’s Wear Daily. “She was the most beautiful pregnant woman I dressed in my career.”

Riccardo, who is friends with Kim’s hip-hop boyfriend Kanye West, the soon-to-be father of her child, said he chose the look because “when you celebrate something, you give people flowers”.

“I said, ‘We should give her our punk moment with a romantic, beautiful, flower-printed dress,’” Tisci said.

“I have dressed many pregnant women in the past. People can say what they want. To me, pregnancy is the most beautiful thing in the world.”

The dress was made from floral printed jersey with grommet details that attached to sleeves, a turtleneck and gloves.

Your say: Who wore it better, Kim or Robin Williams?

The jewellery designer Aussie women (and Seal) can’t get enough of

The jewellery designer Aussie women (and Seal) can't get enough of

Seal models his By Charlotte necklace - everyone's wearing it.

The Monday morning meetings at AWW are one not to miss. This is where we catch up and debrief on what has happened over the weekend, what’s in the papers and any breaking news or new story ideas before moving on to a breakdown of all of Sunday evening’s TV.

This Monday was the usual: who saw 60 Minutes? did you see the doco on ABC? which singers are we loving on The Voice? and the usual chatter about The Voice coaches. This week was about Ricky’s Latino nice guy charm, Delta’s cropped haircut (about time — it looks great), Joel — well we are all a fan of Mr Madden, and Seal — his amazing singer Harrison and his new jewellery he was wearing …

Suddenly everyone turned to me and said, was Seal wearing the same necklace you wear?

And yes he was, it is such a simple yet striking piece, and it always catches the eye of many when I wear it. I am not the only person in our office to wear it, our homes editor Hande has one in gold and news editor Bryce recently purchased one for his lovely wife Shay. Our creative director has had her eye on it too, it is an office favourite. The design in question has graced the pages of AWW countless times, the designer received calls en masse when Deb Hutton wore it, and it travelled to Port Douglas for our January resort fashion. We always have a few pieces in the office on standby for any last-minute shoots.

The delicate chain with half circle pendant with a lotus flower or Buddha embossing sits next to mother of pearl, wood or jade tag is set on a fine chain in either silver, yellow or rose gold plating. Seal has sported the By Charlotte chain past two nights. In matte silver with lotus, and wooden Buddha tag. Maybe this will help Seal get in the zone, be zen, and coach his team to a potential second victory?

By Charlotte is the brainchild of makeup artist Charlotte Blakeney, who is one of AWW go-to makeup artists for celebrity and fashion shoots and practically part of the AWW family. Her jewellery is inspired by her exotic travels to places India, Bali and beyond.

This part-time hobby is taking off and is being snapped all over Instagram by Aussie beauties, Megan Gale, Jessica Mauboy, Jessica Hart, Jennifer Hawkins who are all fans of By Charlotte designs. It’s great to see Seal representing Australian Brands and especially a favourite of my own. www.bycharlotte.com.au Instagram: @bycharlotte_

Before The Voice, there was Idina Menzel

Regularly hailed as one of the voices of her generation, Idina Menzel has never met a high note she couldn't hit. Bryce Corbett meets the Glee star and Broadway songstress.
Idina Menzel

Even down the long-distance phone line from LA, the voice is unmistakable. It has the exact tone, timbre and tendency to purr as you’d expect.

“Yes, this is Idina Menzel,” it says.

Unless you’re a keen follower of musical theatre, a Broadway aficionado or a regular watcher of the TV series Glee, it’s possible the name may not be instantly recognisable. But to hear Idina Menzel sing even once is to have her voice imprinted upon your memory.

Regularly hailed as one of the voices of her generation, the American songstress has never met a high note she couldn’t hit. Power ballads quake in her presence, show tunes tremble. And for a series of nights in June, Menzel is bringing her famous vocal chords to our shores, performing with an orchestra in capital cities around Australia.

“There’s nothing quite like standing and singing in front of a group of eighty incredible musicians,” she says. “When you are on a Broadway stage you have a terrific orchestra but they are in the pit, whereas being on stage with a full orchestra means you are literally lifted by the music. The show is very theatrical and big, but still manages to have a sense of intimacy to it.”

She’s all but sold out multiple shows at venues no less impressive than the Opera House in Sydney and the Festival Centre in Adelaide, yet the thought that anyone in Australia even knows who she is genuinely amazes her.

“I performed in Scotland last year and couldn’t believe there were people there who knew the words to my songs and know who I am.

“It still freaks me out a little. I can be in the middle of nowhere in mid-West America and I cannot believe people are showing up. I try to take those moments in and really appreciate them.”

She makes it sound like she’s an overnight success, unworthy of the following she has built up. But if Idina has arrived, it’s only after having paid her performer dues.

As a fresh-faced musical theatre aspirant from Long Island, New York first commanded attention on Broadway as one of the original cast members of the musical Rent. (The same production on which she met her husband, fellow thespian Taye Diggs, with whom she now has a three-year-old son, Walker). Her breakthrough came with the lead role in another Broadway musical – the original production of Wicked, in which she played (and set the benchmark for) the lead role of Elphaba, the much-maligned and tragically misunderstood Wicked Witch of The West.

Her rendition of Wicked’s signature tune, Defying Gravity has been a YouTube hit of dancing cat proportions and helped earn her a coveted Tony Award.

And though her powerhouse voice has been her ticket to ride for as long as she can remember, she’s all too aware of its tendency to drown out the rest of who she is.

“To be honest, it sometimes feels like it is too much of who I am,” she says.

“Obviously I am grateful that I have this instrument, and I love that I get to use my voice to make a living, but for me the most important thing is to be honest as an artist. The shows and concerts that have most affected me have been the ones where the performers have given a piece of themselves. So while I can sing acrobatically and hit a few high notes, my focus really is on being as honest as possible out there on stage.”

Involvement in the pop culture juggernaut that is Glee has recently been a boon to Idina’s profile (not to mention her iTunes singles sales). And while she says she loves that a top-rating network TV show exists that is all about music, the show’s celebration of the outsider also speaks to her.

“Just like Wicked, Glee is a show that says it’s okay to be different,” she says.

It’s a lesson Idina learned the hard way as a child. Embarrassed by her powerhouse singing voice, she tended to hide it and downplay it rather than be teased about it.

It was only a summer camp for musically-oriented kids, that she was encouraged to give her voice full flight. And in the spirit of paying it forward, she’s established a summer camp all her own in upstate Massachussets.

“It’s called A Broader Way,” Idina explains. “Each year I take a bunch of girls from Harlem and the Bronx up into the country where they swim and do sports and put on a show.

“To watch their transformations is the most rewarding thing you can imagine.

The girls come back to New York city and perform the show for their parents who see them as they have never seen them before.”

“I was a wedding and bahmitzvah singer. Even when I am stage these days, I sometimes find myself remembering the 18 year old me, back on Long Island, wearing the black, slutty sequinned-dress pretending to be older than I am singing Madonna covers. It’s nice to be able to give something back.”

Rescued women offer fresh hope for McCann family

Images mean new hope in Madeline McCann case

Madeleine McCann’s parents have been given “fresh hope” after three US women who went missing a decade ago were found alive on Monday.

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michele Knight escaped the “house of horrors” where they had been held as sex slaves, after neighbours heard Amanda screaming and came to her aid. The trio disappeared in Cleveland, Ohio, in three separate incidents between 2002 and 2004.

Kate and Gerry McCann, who marked the sixth anniversary of their daughter’s disappearance only last week, say the recent events have “reaffirmed” their hopes of finding their daughter alive.

“The discovery of these young women reaffirms our hope of finding Madeleine, which has never diminished,” the couple said in a statement.

“Their recovery is also further evidence that children are sometimes abducted and kept for long periods. So we ask the public to remain vigilant in the ongoing search for Madeleine.

“Our thoughts are with the women in America and their families.”

Michele went missing in 2002 at age 20, while Amanda, 16 at the time, disappeared the following year. Fourteen-year-old Gina didn’t return home from school on April 2, 2004. The trio and Amanda’s six-year-old daughter Joceyln, born in captivity, were rescued from a house located within kilometres of each abduction site.

Three men, Ariel Castro and his brothers Pedro and Onil, have been arrested in connection with the kidnappings.
