Vaccine opponents get info from internet, supporters from doctors

Why there is NO excuse to avoid immunising your kids

Half of Australians who oppose childhood vaccination get their information from the internet, while most supporters trust the advice of their GP.

The finding, which emerged from the first national survey on our attitudes to vaccination, has sparked calls from medical experts for scientific evidence supporting childhood jabs to be made more accessible and user-friendly online.

Although 92 per cent of parents allow their children to get fully vaccinated, the survey found 53 per cent have a range of concerns — most commonly around side-effects, risks and safety testing.

Among the least confident are younger people, who are more likely to rely on internet research than their parents and grandparents.

The survey results come as the NSW opposition proposes laws that would give childcare centres and preschools the right to ban children who are not vaccinated.

Concern is growing with rates in some areas of the state falling below that of Third World countries like Rwanda.

The research shows GPs have an important role as the main source of information on vaccination to 88 per cent of supporters and 40 per cent of objectors.

Professor Mark Kendall, of the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, said the researchers and developers of vaccines “need to work harder in getting the complete information picture of vaccines on the basis of scientific rigour to the public”.

Despite relatively widespread uncertainty among parents, only eight per cent delayed or avoided getting their kids immunised. Eleven per cent reported they or someone they know have had a serious reaction to a vaccine.

The National Survey of Australian Public Attitudes to Vaccination was carried out by the National Centre for Immunisation & Research Surveillance and Australia Online Research to coincide withJabbed: Love, Fear and Vaccines, a documentary that premiers on SBS ONE on Sunday, May 26.

Megan Gale shines on Cannes Film Festival red carpet

She's walked kilometres of red carpet in her time, but Megan Gale says nothing is quite as overwhelming as fronting the cameras at the Cannes Film Festival.
Megan Gale Cannes red carpet

She’s walked kilometres of red carpet in her time, but Megan Gale says nothing is quite as overwhelming as fronting the cameras at the Cannes Film Festival.

Speaking to The Weekly in the French Riviera hamlet only hours before she donned her custom-made Alex Perry gown and joined fellow L’Oreal Paris beauty ambassadors at the premiere of Benicio del Toro’s new film, Jimmy P, Megan said arriving at the Palais du Congres at Cannes and stepping onto the red carpet “is unlike anything else in the world”.

“It’s complete bedlam and chaos,” said Megan, who made her Cannes debut at last year’s festival.

“You have banks of photographers on either side of you all screaming at you to look at them. They announce your name and they place you in front of the cameras and the flashing and shouting starts. And then you just move slowly but surely up the red carpet, smiling as you go. It’s pretty overwhelming.”

Sharing the red carpet at the Jimmy P premiere was the film’s star, Benicio del Toro, festival jury president, Steven Spielberg and – in town to promote their upcoming Hunger Games sequel — Jennifer Lawrence and Aussie actor Liam Hemsworth.

With more than 4500 journalists from all over the world in attendance, and some 11,000 delegates to the film festival, Cannes remains the premier cinema showcase in the world.

For the French-based cosmetics company, L’Oreal Paris – co-sponsors of the festival – the week-long movie love-in is a major event of their calendar year, and one which is attended by all their international ambassadors, including Victoria’s Secret model Doutzen Kroes, actresses Eva Longoria and Freida Pinto, double-amputee, athlete and model Aimee Mullins and Hollywood legend, Jane Fonda.

Megan, 37, is the first Australian-based Aussie ever to be chosen as a face of L’Oreal Paris.

“It’s extremely humbling to be in such esteemed company,” she said.

During a photo shoot on the Croisette yesterday, Megan was mobbed by fans. Still a household name from the time she spent in Italy as young model and actress, Megan’s celebrity status appears not to have dimmed.

“Amazingly, while there were Italian accents among them, most of them were French,” she said. “And they were brandishing photos of me from last year’s red carpet here.”

At a lunch at the exclusive Hotel Martinez, Megan impressed Italian journalists chatting confidently to them in their mother tongue. Outside the hotel, and despite the torrential rain that has fallen on Cannes for the past twelve hours, crowds waited patiently under umbrellas to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars.

Sixteen years later, his third larger-than-life role is about to grace our screen – the title character of Jay Gatsby in Luhrmann’s latest spectacular The Great Gatsby.

Jeune and Jolie labelled ‘soft porn’ at Cannes Film Festival

The posters stare down at you wherever you wander. A teenage girl, her long hair tousled, her naked form covered by white bed sheets, her lips pouting as a naked man stands before her.
Juene et Jolie

The posters stare down at you wherever you wander along the Croisette. A teenage girl, her long hair tousled, her naked form covered by white bed sheets, her lips pouting as a naked man stands before her.

“Jeune et Jolie” (Young and Beautiful) screams the title of the film poster. “Un film de Francois Ozon”.

The wonderful thing about the Cannes Film Festival is the variety of cinema from all over the world that is on show.

Filmmakers competing at this year’s festival for the prestigious Palme d’Or hail from China, India, Afghanistan and Italy.

And then there are the French films. Which, in the time-honoured tradition of French cinema, will almost always include one movie about older men having their evil way with young, barely post-pubescent girls.

The French call it cinema. Most normal people would call it soft porn.

From the opening scene of French director, Francois Ozon’s Jeune et Jolie, in which we meet the movie’s protagonist, 17-year-old school student Isabelle flat on her back and sunbathing topless, we know we are in for yet another rollicking hour-and-a-half insight into the French male psyche.

The filmmaker — and I daresay numerous critics — will tell you the movie is a meditation on the growing pains of being a teenager; a moody, evocative reflection of the modern state of adolescence.

When in reality, it is a depressing, voyeuristic hour-and-a-half of soft porn masquerading as art house.

The film follows the story a school student who becomes a prostitute, servicing Paris’s seemingly never ending stream of aged business men looking to reclaim their lost virility with a furtive session with a teenager in the back of their Peugeot or in some seedy two-star hotel room.

If you listen to the director, as I did at the press conference here, he will tell you he plucked his 23-year-old leading lady, Marine Vacth from a modelling agency (where she has modelled for Yves St Laurent, Chloe and Ralph Lauren) not because she was a great actress, but because she would look good naked.

“Marine didn’t have much experience … but she also was a model and that helped her for the nude scenes. She was quite free. Often actresses are ill at ease in those scenes,” he told reporters.

“In her eyes I could see there was a whole inner world, a mystery, and that is exactly what I was looking for in my film.”

If it was her eyes he was particularly interested in, one wonders why the camera spends most of the film lingering far further south.

French journalists covering the festival (many of them male) have applauded the film for its bold exploration of what it means to be a French teen. Journalists from other countries however have been left scratching their heads.

Ozon is no stranger to this kind of vaguely inappropriate film making. His previous Cannes efforts have included the equally sensual Swimming Pool, in which his camera lingers lasciviously over the semi-naked form of the then 23-year-old, Ludivigne Sagnier (in which Sagnier famously appears topless in over half of her scenes).

The French attitude to nudity ˜ relaxed as it is — is one thing, and perhaps Anglo-Saxon culture is occasionally too puritanical — but to pass off as deep social commentary a film that is clearly just an old man’s sexual fantasy is frankly is laughable. Vive la France, indeed.

Baz Luhrmann’s production of The Great Gatsby is being slammed in reviews but it’s already a runaway box office hit. After attending the film’s lavish premiere at Cannes Film Festival The Weekly’s Editor-in-Chief Helen McCabe says forget the critics, Gatsby is incredible.

The movie which this week opened the 66th Cannes Film Festival opened to mixed reviews on the French Riveria.

However Edgerton, 38, as Tom Buchanan dominates the screen despite playing opposite Hollywood leading man Leonardo DiCaprio.

The movie, shot in Sydney is a classic Luhrmann production with a dizzying array of special effects.

It tells the story of the mysterious Jay Gatsby famously played by Robert Redford in 1974 who obsesses over a lost love played by Mia Farrow (Carey Mulligan).

The 3D remake is expected to be a box office smash despite some disappointing reviews and a lukewarm response in Cannes.

It has already taken $51 million in box office takings in United States.

The story of budget blow-outs, delays and mixed reviews has plagued Luhrmann’s career.
