How your smartphone is keeping you awake at night

A Harvard sleep professor has blamed screen-time for our lack of sleep.

How your smartphone is keeping you awake at night

Terrible night’s sleep? Blame your smartphone, tablet, laptop, and other devices that new research has pointed the finger at for keeping us up at night.

It isn’t the constant need to check emails or chart ‘likes’ on our facebook posts, but the artificial light screens emit that disrupt the body’s natural rhythm and cut into our sleep time.

Writing in science journal Nature, Harvard’s head of sleep medicine Professor Charles Czeisler has called for research to help develop ways of counteracting the effects of artificial lighting on sleeping patterns.

In the 50 years leading up to 2000, Professor Czeisler writes, the average person in the UK increased their use of artificial light sources by four times, and sleep deficiency rose in line with this as did the consumption of caffeine to stay awake.

He also cited a study that revealed 30 per cent of working adults in the US and 44 per cent of night workers reported getting less than six hours sleep a night on average.

This decline in number of hours we are sleeping each night thanks to screen-time, Czeisler writes, affects public health, and puts us at greater risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression and stroke in adults, and concentration in children.

“There are many reasons why people get insufficient sleep in our 24/7 society, from early starts at work or school, or long commutes, to caffeine-rich food and drink,” he says.

“But the precipitating factor is an often unappreciated, technological breakthrough: the electric light. Without it, few people would use caffeine to stay awake at night.

“Many people are still checking email, doing homework or watching TV at midnight, with hardly a clue that it is the middle of the solar night.”

An Australian study released this week revealed that children as young as eight years old had access to an average of between three and four internet enabled devices, and one in four tweens — kids between the ages of eight and 12 — was still online after eight pm.

Madonna lays down the dating laws for Lourdes

Madonna lays down the dating laws for Lourdes

Madonna has always had a rebellious streak but she’s certainly strict when it comes to her teenage daughter, Lourdes.

The 16-year-old, who is said to be dating 17-year-old Homeland star Timothee Chalamet, has never been allowed to go out with a boy unchaperoned.

However, Madonna recently agreed to let Lourdes and Timothee go on a date without parental supervision…but instead sent along a burly bodyguard to keep a very close eye on them.

The teens, who are classmates at the Fiorello H LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York, were spotted at Brother Jimmy’s BBQ on Second Avenue on Saturday night.

While the pair sat at their own table, the bodyguard sat nearby and “never took his eyes off of them”, a source told the New York Post.

“They were leaning close together to talk before the food came. He was making her laugh a lot,” the source said.

Once the pair had finished their meal, the bodyguard swiftly escorted them to a chauffeured car.

The two were also seen on a date back in April, when they were accompanied by Lourdes’ father, Carlos Leon, and his fiancee.

Madonna recently told Extra that Lourdes’ has “a very nice boyfriend” but refused to confirm that it is indeed Timothee. “I don’t know!” she replied when asked the name of the lucky guy.

Bone marrow from brother saves eight-year-old girl

Bone marrow from brother saves eight-year-old girl

Zoe McCubben, who was diagnosed with severe Aplastic Anaemia.

It was the last weekend of the school holidays in January 2012 when Susan McCubben noticed small bruises appearing on her eight-year-old daughter’s arms and legs.

Zoe was an active girl, always upside down, turning cartwheels or doing somersaults on the trampoline and small bruises were quite common, but every minor knock or bump resulted in a large bruise which slowly worsened over the next few days.

Worried, Susan made an appointment with her GP, who immediately sent Zoe for a blood test. The results came back the same day — Zoe had a low platelet count and was at serious risk of bleeding.

She was rushed to Sydney Children’s Hospital’s Emergency Department where she was diagnosed with severe Aplastic Anaemia. Her bone marrow was not producing enough platelets, red blood cells and white blood cells for her body to function properly.

Zoe needed a bone marrow transplant from her mum, dad Ian or brother Oscar, 11. If no one in her family was a match, she would have to undergo lengthy immuno-suppressive therapy.

Initial tests showed her dad and brother were not full matches, so Zoe started immuno-suppressive treatment including chemotherapy, steroids and other medicine. As a result, Zoe had no immune system and was at high risk of infection.

After a lengthy hospital stay, Zoe was allowed to return home, but after just one night she was rushed back to the Emergency room with a temperature. She spent the next two weeks in hospital.

Over the next few weeks, Zoe was hospitalised repeatedly, spending only a few nights at home, her record being 11 nights in her own bed in a row.

Three months after her immune-suppressive treatment began, Zoe got some wonderful news — the final results for her brother Oscar’s bone marrow blood test were in and he was a match!

Oscar donated his bone marrow to help save his sister and after another 19 days in hospital, doctors let the little girl return home.

Zoe’s life is now getting back to normal. Although she still has to have regular check-ups, she is back at school and playing her favourite sports and her mum is thrilled.

“No one could have prepared us for how our life was going to change the night we first brought Zoe into the hospital,” she said.

“However, once we knew what was in store for us the support we received through the hospital was fantastic.

“We cannot thank enough the doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital for everything they’ve done for Zoe and our family, their dedication to the children and their health is unbelievable.”

Do you want to help transform the lives of sick and injured children like Zoe? Tune into the 4th annual Gold Telethon, brought to you by the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation and Channel 9. It will be broadcast on Channel Nine, WIN and NBN all day on the Queen’s Birthday public holiday, Monday, June 10, 2013.

The Gold Telethon is the major annual fundraising campaign for the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, which helps 39,000 seriously ill and injured children every year.

In 2012, it raised $2.61 million and this year is aims to raise even more — $3.6 million.

Gillard, Rinehart, Kelly among world’s most powerful women

Julia Gillard, Gina Rinehart and Gail Kelly

Mining magnate Gina Rinehart, Prime Minister Julia Gillard, and Westpac boss Gail Kelly have all been named in Forbes magazine’s list of the world’s most powerful women.

Gina Rinehart is the highest placed Aussie at number 16, leapfrogging the Prime Minister who sits in the 28th spot.

The mining magnate with an estimated wealth of $17 billion — making her the wealthiest person in Australia according to the BRW rich list also published this week — is described by the magazine as a “wannabe Rupert” referring to her media interests.

“Rinehart has been purchasing large shares in Aussie media companies Channel 10 and Fairfax Media, the only non-Murdoch broadsheet company in the country,” her description reads.

According to Forbes, Rinehart’s wealth and influence makes her more significantly more powerful than the Prime Minister (and Beyonce).

Gillard slipping grip on the nation’s top job could be part of the reason she has fallen a spot on the list, her bio citing “approving ratings at 37 per cent as she continues to blast her opponent Tony Abbott as a misogynist”.

They both outrank the Queen (number 40) and Angelina Jolie (37) in the list topped by German Chancellor Angela Merkel for the third year running.

Brazil’s Dilma Rouseff comes in at number two followed by Melinda Gates who co-chairs the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with her philanthropist husband, US First Lady Michelle Obama, and former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton rounding off the top five.

CEO of Westpac Banking group Gail Kelly is the only other Australian to feature on the list, falling two spots from her 2012 ranking to number 62.

She was praised by the magazine for her leadership style and commitment to getting women in top jobs.

“Kelly surprised many when she hit her target of having women fill 40 per cent of top managerial positions at Australia’s second largest bank two years early.”

Why Arnold and Maria still haven’t divorced

Why Arnold and Maria still haven’t divorced

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver had one of the most shocking celebrity break-ups of all time, but the two are in no rush to make their divorce official.

The pair split in 2011 after Maria discovered Arnold had cheated on her during their 25-year marriage and had fathered a child with their housekeeper.

Sources close to the pair have told TMZ there are two lines of speculation about their reluctance to divorce: They are either too rich or they may actually get back together.

While the two don’t feel “any urgency” to make their divorce official, they have already worked out their money and custody issues. They have agreed to split their $400 million fortune down the middle, so according to sources close to them, a divorce won’t actually impact their day-to-day lives.

Meanwhile, others are speculating that Maria could be considering a reunion, with the pair sending mixed messages to friends.

The two spent Easter together and attended their daughter Christina’s graduation last weekend.
