Mums hiring ‘photo coach’ to capture happy snaps of kids

Mums hiring ‘photo coach’ to capture happy snaps of kids

Any mum will tell you it’s hard to get a decent photograph of your toddler, but some mums are so determined to capture the moment they are spending up to $3000 on a personal “photo coach”.

Mother-of-two Rohi Mirza Pandya, 40, from New York, has enlisted the help of photo coach Alethea Cheng Fitzpatrick who runs Photosanity.

Alethea’s aim is to help parents “capture natural moments that would otherwise fade into a blur and be lost forever”. Her workshops range from $25 for a one-off workshop to $3000 for a year-long program.

Rohi says she reached out to Alethea because she wanted to learn how to take better pictures of her five-year-old son and three-year-old daughter.

“I have a personal trainer at the gym. I should have a personal trainer for photography,” she told website DNAinfo New York.

“I consider it the same kind of thing — motivation, someone to help you out. Otherwise, I’m a total slacker.”

Rohi says the course not only helped her to take better photos, but also taught her how to use the “fancy’ camera she bought when her first child was born.

“I really am busy, so I don’t have the time to look at my manuals. So Alethea can tell me, ‘This is what to do’,” she says.

Alethea, a former architect and interior designer, began her family portrait photography business after the birth of her first son, Liam.

“I call myself a ‘coach’ because it’s not just about delivering content, it’s about motivating and inspiring people,” she said of her business.

Her first workshop attracted 15 mums. A year later, her business took off online and she has since worked with more than 500 families.

“I work with a lot of type-A professional women, but they’re surprisingly lacking in confidence about their photography,” she said.

“A lot of what I hear is, ‘I’m always missing the moment. By the time I take out my camera they’ve moved onto something else or my picture is blurry or my kid makes cheesy poses’.

“For a lot of people, the camera gets between them and their kids. So I really work with them to see how they can flip that around.”

Miley and Liam: It’s over

Miley and Liam: It’s over

After months of speculation, it looks like it’s officially over for Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus.

US Weekly reports the pair called off their engagement a few weeks after Liam’s older brothers, Chris and Luke, “staged an intervention” and voiced their concerns about his relationship with the former Disney star.

Rumours of a split first surfaced back in March when Liam headed home to Australia for several weeks, while Miley remained in LA.

But not long after, it looked as if they’d repaired their four-year relationship and Miley was flaunting her 3.5-carat diamond engagement ring at parties and on social media.

It’s getting hard to keep up with these two, who have (unofficially) broken up four times since February.

But the on-again/off-again couple seem to have called it quits for good this time, with an insider telling the magazine “they are definitely over”.

H&M makes healthy model pledge

H&M makes healthy model pledge

Images from H&M's recent campaign using a 'normal-size' model

Global retail giant H&M has pledged to use healthy models in its advertising and admitted that in the past the company has irresponsibly promoted too-thin models and in doing so, promoted an unhealthy body image.

CEO Karl-John Persson made the admission on the topic of model health speaking with Metro.

“We have a huge responsibility here … I don’t think we’ve always been good. Some of the models we’ve had have been too skinny. That’s something we think a lot about and are working on,” he said.

“We want to show diversity in our advertising and not give people the impression that girls have to look a particular way.”

The company was praised last month for using a “normal-size” swimsuit model, and not making a big deal about it, and has continued to demonstrate its commitment to promoting real and diverse body image by appointing Beyonce as the face of its new campaign.

“By and large, I think we’ve succeeded: we’ve many different kinds of models from different ethnic backgrounds. In our last campaign we had a somewhat more buxom model, and now we’re having Beyonce, who’s a bit curvier as well,” Persson said.

He was also quick to point out that H&M didn’t want to discriminate against healthy models who are also thin.

“There are models who are too thin or obviously underweight, but there are also those who’re just thin, and they’re the ones we should keep working with, as a long as they look sound and healthy.”

The Swedish company’s admission over its past wrongdoings and commitment to a body-happy future brings a refreshing and sadly rare announcement from a major player in the fashion industry.

Closer to home, few labels have been so openly supportive of promoting positive body image.

The Government’s Positive Body Image awards — launched this week for the second year running by Minister for Youth Peter Garrett — aim to recognise businesses and individuals promoting positive body image.

In the inaugural awards, held last year, the number of entrants from the fashion industry was disappointingly low.

Do you know an Australian company that demonstrates a commitment to promoting healthy body image? Take a look at the Positive Body Image Awards website.

The day a Princess became our greatest Queen

She was a young woman of 26 with the world’s expectations on her shoulders but on June 2, 1953, Princess Elizabeth had something much heavier weighing her down: a robe so weighty she needed the help of six ladies just to walk.

It was the day of her coronation and she was wearing the Robe of Estate with itsextravagant six-metre train. Combined with her heavy crown, the young royal could barely move without her ladies-in-waiting.

This Sunday marks 60 years since the fateful day Elizabeth was crowned Queen. Here are our favourite retro pictures of the event.

Elizabeth became Queen when her father died in 1952 but the coronation was delayed.

The delay was to allow a period of mourning for the King.

The service started at 11.15am and lasted almost three hours.

The Queen was just 26 and a mother of two young children at the time of her coronation.

Coronation chicken was invented for the event.

An estimated 27 million people watched the coronation on television.

A further 11 million listened on the radio.

It was the first coronation to be broadcast on TV.

Elizabeth was the 39th Sovereign to be crowned at Westminster Abbey, but on the sixth Queen.

The Queen’s dress was made by Mr Norman Hartnell.

How to live with just 30 items or less in your wardrobe

How to live with just 30 items or less in your wardrobe

Is your wardrobe a treasure chest of items that come in and out of fashion? Are you reaching your maximum space limit? Do you find things you forgot you had? It’s time to clean up and clear out what you don’t need.

Stylist Wendy Mak says women can get 1000 outfits with only 30 items of clothing in their wardrobe yet still look on trend, and save money too.

“Most people don’t believe me when I say 30 items are all you need,” reveals Wendy, author of The Terrific Thirty.

But she insists it can be done.

“You just need the tools to critique each purchase and decide if that item is something you will actually wear.”

Wendy says her “wardrobe happiness” philosophy and her book were prompted by clients with wardrobes full of expensive clothing that never gets worn.

“From a financial and emotional point of view, I have a philosophy of doing more with less and picking the right combination of classic and trend pieces to give you a genuinely versatile wardrobe,” she says.

A classic piece is “something that doesn’t have any details on it that could date the item”, Wendy explains. She suggests steering clear of studs, lace or noticeable buttons. A number of retailers, including Witchery and Zara, now have a low-cost “basics” range that can be teamed up with seasonal trends.

“Some typical problems I see are wardrobes where there aren’t enough basics or staples to match with those gorgeous statement pieces you buy, or not having enough interesting colours or accessories to give a boring wardrobe the “oomph” it needs,” she says.

“When you don’t go over the top with your base clothing, you can then throw on accessories, blazers, shoes and bags that are interesting, fun and full of colour,” Wendy says.

“By doing this you can create hundreds of looks from the same pants and blouse just by changing accessories. You don’t have to buy a million pairs of pants but just a few in classic cuts and colours, and then buy cheaper, more disposable accessories to change the look.”

The next step is to be honest with yourself and, if you really aren’t going to wear it, get rid of it.

Wendy’s wardrobe wisdom is based on some simple rules, one in particular called the “friend “rule.

“Every item in your wardrobe must have a ‘friend’ to play with – basically something to wear with it,” she says.

“If you don’t have something to wear with the item in your wardrobe, it needs to go, no matter how much you’ve spent on it or how much you love it.

“It’s comes down to this – if the item in question has no ‘friend’ to match with it, you won’t wear it and so it will never come out of the wardrobe.”

“I believe in wardrobe karma, and having items you don’t wear that hang around in your wardrobe simply because you feel bad about throwing them out is just bad wardrobe karma!” Wendy says.

“That stuff mocks you every day when you open your wardrobe! Bad wardrobe karma breeds more bad karma, so start afresh with a simplified wardrobe. You’ll be amazed how cleansing it feels once you’ve done it.”

Once you have ditched the sentimental pieces and the things you really aren’t going to wear, you can review your basics and shop for the things you really need.

“A small pendant on a necklace might go unnoticed on a black dress, but a statement necklace in turquoise or big green earrings won’t,” Wendy says.

“Fashion, statement pieces are guaranteed to give your same old clothes a new lease on life.”

“The best part is you can find them anywhere – from that investment piece to a $2 bauble at an op-shop.”

Katy Perry and John Mayer’s flirty reunion

They’re hot then they’re cold: Katy Perry and John Mayer reunite

They’re hot, they’re cold: Katy Perry and John Mayer together at the 2013 Grammy Awards.

It seems Katy Perry is in relationship limbo again, after being spotted with John Mayer in her Hollywood home over the Memorial Day Weekend.

Just months after yet another dramatic break-up, Katy, 28, and John, 35, were seen casually flirting at the singer’s barbecue celebration.

After starting up a relationship last summer, the two briefly broke up in August 2012, before getting back together in September 2012. The pair then officially separated for a second time in March.

Katy’s A-list party guests confirmed the pair still have plenty of chemistry.

“They seem to be back together-ish. They were very flirty and having a really good time together,” one guest told Us Weekly magazine.

But if this friendly reunion means that Katy and John are yet again “back together” it’s still to be made official.

“It’s not over until it’s over,” another guest told the magazine. “You have to see how things play out.”

Meanwhile, Katy has been spotted partying with Twilight star Robert Pattinson, who recently split from his co-star Kristen Stewart.

R-Patz and Katy were spotted cozied up together in the back of a courtyard at San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California, watching a wedding rehearsal for a pair of strangers.

It seems like Katy just can’t make up her mind. Stay tuned!
