TV makes kids more likely to have sugary drinks

TV makes kids more likely to have sugary drinks

Children who spend a lot of time in front of the television are more likely to consume unhealthy soft drinks leading to obesity and health problems like diabetes.

A study by the University of Gothenburg found that for every hour children sit staring at the screen, they are 50 per cent more likely to consume sweetened drinks, and parents who don’t restrict their children’s TV time are twice as likely to have children who consume sugary soft drink each week.

Related: Soft drinks are ‘evil’ and should be avoided

The study surveyed more than 1700 parents of two- to four-year-old children about their children’s viewing habits and sweetened drink consumption.

Researchers found a “very clear link” between kids’ viewing habits and soft drink consumption, but were uncertain whether the increased consumption among children who watched more TV came down to exposure to advertisements, or that children were drinking while they watched.

“The children who watched more TV were more likely to drink these beverages,” said researcher Stina Olafsdottir.

“In fact, each additional hour in front of the TV increased the likelihood of regular consumption by 50 per cent.

“A similar link was found for total screen time.”

One in seven parents were found to reduce their children’s exposure to TV ads, and children of the same parents were found to be less likely to drink sweetened beverages regularly.

The evidence of sugary drinks’ impact on weight gain and diabetes in children is mounting worldwide. A 2012 study found that as little as two cans of soft drink per week can wreak havoc on our health, causing increased risk of heart disease, liver failure, pancreatic cancer and hypertension.

More recently in Tasmania, where one in three children are considered obese or overweight, calls have been made for ban on soft drinks in schools.

Michael Jackson’s daughter Paris, 15, attemps suicide

Michael Jackson's 15-year-old daughter Paris has been hospitalised after a suicide attempt.

Michael Jackson’s 15-year-old daughter Paris has been hospitalised after a suicide attempt.

Gossip website TMZ reports Paris penned a suicide note before cutting her right wrist with a meat cleaver and taking a large quantity of painkillers.

She then called a suicide hotline and the person who answered her call alerted emergency services who sent an ambulance to the Jackson home in Calabasas, California at around 1.30am.

Paris was taken to hospital where she had “numerous stitches” in her arm and was placed on involuntary psychiatric hold for 72 hours.

The drama unfolded just hours after the teenager posted a series of dark messages on Twitter.

At around midnight Tuesday, she wrote “I wonder why tears are salty” before quoting Beatles song ‘Yesterday’ writing: “Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away, now it looks as though they’re here to stay.”

Paris is now recovering in hospital. A statement from Katherine Jackson’s attorney Perry Sanders suggests Paris has been depressed since the death of her father Michael Jackson in 2009.

“Paris is physically fine and is getting appropriate medical attention,” Sanders told TMZ.

“Being a sensitive 15-year-old is difficult no matter who you are. It is especially difficult when you lose the person closest to you.”

Jackson brothers Jackie, Marlon and Tito added: “Thank you for the outpouring of concern and support for Paris. She is safe and doing fine. We truly appreciate you respecting our family privacy at this time.”

A lawyer for Paris’ mother, Debbie Rowe, who was married to Michael from 1996 to 1999, thanked everyone for their prayers.

“We appreciate everyone’s thoughts for Paris at this time and their respect for the family’s privacy,” the lawyer said.

Debbie gave up custody of Paris and her older brother Prince Michael I when she divorced Michael but has reconciled with Paris in the past few months.

It’s the second magazine job the 29-year-old has secured herself in the past year. Pippa also writes the monthly “Friday Night Feasts” column for Waitrose Kitchen magazine.

The younger sister of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, has written her first editorial piece about her most memorable experiences at Wimbledon.

In the article Pippa says she was once an aspiring professional tennis player herself and remembers purchasing a postcard of the women’s championship trophy and writing on it: “I will win this one day.”

Pippa, who is currently dating stockbroker Nico Jackson, said as a child she imagined she would get married in tennis whites, including “shorts with no pleats or frills”.

Throughout the article Pippa describes her favourite memories of Wimbledon, what to wear to a match, what to prepare for before heading to centre court, and which up-and-coming tennis stars to watch.

She also advises to keep the evening afterwards free.

“There’s nothing worse than having to leave Rafael Nadal’s athleticism for a routine pizza with friends,” she writes.

Paris Jackson rushed to hospital after suicide attempt

Paris Jackson has been rushed to hospital after an apparent suicide attempt following a battle with depression.

“Paris has been very, very depressed for a while,” a source close to the Jackson family told People magazine. She’s been throwing fits and tantrums, kicking and screaming and cutting herself.

Paris, 15, attempted to cut her wrists with a kitchen knife and took around 20 ibuprofen tablets. Sandra Ribera, an attorney for Paris’s grandmother and legal guardian, Katherine Jackson, has confirmed that the teenager is now stabilised at a Southern California hospital and is “physically fine”.

“She misses her father greatly,” the source said.

“She was the centre of Michael’s world and it’s all different now. She says that she is lonely and that she doesn’t feel loved.”

Paris has recently tried to reconnect with her mother, Debbie Rowe, a decision her grandmother is said to be supportive of.

“Some of this is normal teenager things, hormonal changes. But now it’s serious,” the source said.

“Paris has said that there is something missing in her life. This is a cry for help.”

The source added that Paris has felt pressures to start a career and has signed with a manager. She has been flooded with offers to work but hasn’t wanted to commit.

Pregnant women: Put down the make-up brush and plastic wrap, study says

Pregnant women: Put down the make-up brush and plastic wrap, study says

Pregnant women have been issued with a new list of don’ts as senior doctors recommend they should consider cutting down on make-up and plastic-wrapped food, among other measures, despite having no evidence of their risks.

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) has today published guidelines that are already proving controversial among medical experts and mothers, The Times reports.

The paper recommends cutting out anything that risks exposure to chemicals, while acknowledging there is no direct evidence of harm from everyday chemical exposure.

The college warns women should be made aware of chemicals in food, grooming products and household cleaners.

Expectant mothers should not even think about buying a new car or painting the nursery ahead for their baby’s arrival to avoid risking pregnancy problems like premature birth, birth defects and cognitive difficulties, the paper warns.

Experts have weighed in saying the advice could needlessly scare women and distract them from other issues, but the study’s co-author Michelle Bellingham of the University of Glasgow said that while the researchers didn’t want to scare parents-to-be, expectant mothers should put “safety first” and “assume risk is present even when it may be minimal or eventually proven to be unfounded”.

“We’re not saying if you do this you will definitely have an effect, because we don’t know that … We could sit and wait for evidence before we do anything, but this is more a proactive way,” Ms Bellingham said.

“I hear people screaming ‘you can’t wrap yourself up in a bubble’, which I completely understand because this is everyday life. But these are the ways which, if you choose, you can reduce your exposure.”

Your say: Do you think this advice is over the top? Or is it important to be cautious?
