Johnny Depp’s ex tells Amber: Leave my daughter alone!

Johnny Depp's ex tells Amber: Leave my daughter alone!

Lily-Rose is growing up too fast, and the finger is being pointed at Johnny’s new lover.

Vanessa Paradis was heartbroken when Johnny Depp left her for bisexual actress Amber Heard – and now she is taking drastic action to make sure she doesn’t lose her daughter, too.

A source close to the uneasy former couple tells Woman’s Day that French actress Vanessa has told Johnny in no uncertain terms he’s to keep their impressionable daughter Lily-Rose away from Amber, 27. Vanessa fears Amber will be a bad influence on the 14-year-old, who is already attracting attention for the skimpy outfits she wears.

Even American gossip blogger Perez Hilton – notorious for his love of all things scandalous – expressed his concern recently, saying, “Lily was wearing some incredibly short clothes… It is obvious that eventually she’s going to be just as beautiful as her parents are, but she should enjoy being a kid for a few more years.”

“Vanessa thinks Amber is a home wrecker and she calls her ‘trouble’, but she’s also painfully aware that Amber is a darling of the LA scene,” the source continues. “To teenagers she is edgy and hip. Vanessa is upset that Lily already seems to see Amber as someone to look up to.”

*The Block*’s Bec: ‘We will make mum proud’

The Block's Bec: 'We will make mum proud'

The Block’s Bec opens up about losing her mum, and why she and George will fulfil Rosa’s dying wish to stay on the show.

It’s been three months since Bec Douros’s mum Rosa died after a long battle with breast cancer, but for The Block: Sky High favourite, this past week has felt like losing her all over again. As the episodes dealing with Rosa’s death went to air, Bec and her husband George relived the heartbreaking days they farewelled the much-loved mum.

“I’ve wanted to watch,” says 27-year-old beautician Bec, “but it’s been really hard.’’ While it has been emotionally wrenching, it’s also enabled Bec to relish those precious moments when her mother, Rosa Martino, appeared on the show and won her own legion of fans – fans who are now sharing in Bec’s grief.

There’s been an outpouring of sympathy for the young Victorian couple on The Block’s Facebook page, along with tributes to the woman dubbed “Mama Block” after she turned up at the construction site with lasagne for all. She even did the contestants’ laundry.

“The birthday episode was really beautiful to watch. Seeing her again when she brought all the food and washed everyone’s clothes was lovely, because that’s how I remember her,” says Bec. “When my mum came on the show, I think the public saw the kind of family I came from and what beautiful people we were surrounded by. People connected with us. Now they’re following this journey, and it’s emotional for them, too. The amount of support we’ve had has been very touching.’’

The rise of the rural bachelor

The rise of the rural bachelor

Sam Trethewey, 29, is nominated as rural bachelor of the year.

Look out ladies, there’s a new breed of bachelor in town. Only they’re not in town at all — they’re out working on the land.

The age of the metrosexual is well and truly over with women shifting their preferences towards blokes who are handy with a tractor and know how to muster sheep. Welcome the rise of the rural bachelor.

Romance writers have already started cashing in on the trend with 50 Shades-esque novel covers featuring abandoned dusty Akubras thrown on bales of hay lining bookshop walls, and Australian women are starting to wise up as well.

Third generation farmer Sam Trethewey is one such bachelor who can give some insight into the appeal of country boys.

“There seems to be a romantic, kind of sexy, masculine idea around farmers,” he says.

“For women there’s that earthiness, there’s that genuineness. There are good family values that come with farming.

“It’s a real family orientated lifestyle but I think the main thing is fun — we definitely know how to have fun.”

The humble bachelor is quick to point out that he doesn’t necessarily credit himself with all of these attributes, but nonetheless he’s been chosen as one of Australia’s most eligible rural blokes.

The 29-year-old travels to New Zealand next week to compete for the title of Fieldays Australasian rural bachelor of the year.

Sam entered as “a bit of fun”, and was chosen along with two other Aussies and five Kiwi natives to compete in a series of challenges to take home the “golden gumboot” — the competitions top prize.

The goal of the competition for Sam is to give farmers a bit of exposure and work on closing the “country-urban” gap by “working with city people to understand our wild ways”, but he’s not completely ruling out meeting a bachelorette.

As well as the prized golden gumboot, there is also a People’s Choice award up for grabs.

Why you shouldn’t buy cheap clothes online

Why you shouldn't buy cheap clothes online

The swift rise in popularity of online shopping and introduction of low-priced, fast fashion stores into Australia such as Zara and Top Shop has certainly changed the face of retail.

Quick fix shopping has become so easy a new dress can be delivered to your front door the same day you order.

Apps on your iPhone will let you know when there’s a sale on, anywhere in the world.

You can leave the office at lunch time and buy a head-to-toe, bang on trend outfit with handbag to wear on Saturday night for less than $200. But for those who may be teetering on the edge of a shopping addiction, these are dangerous temptations.

How do you know if you are just someone who likes fashion, or if you have fallen into the abyss of comfort shopping?

Are there things in your wardrobe that you have only worn once? Items that still have price tags on them? Pieces you bought excitedly because they were a bargain and then promptly forgot you had them?

These impulse buys are jamming up precious closet space and, more importantly, keeping you poor. Fashion that gets only one wear is not a good long term investment, hence the adage: “I’m not rich enough to buy cheap clothes”.

As someone who worked at Vogue for more than 25 years, I had to be very careful from the outset that I did not let fashion consumption take over my life.

I learned pretty quickly that something we fawned all over one month was out of fashion the next, and I watched wealthier colleagues around me spend a fortune on things that they wore only once or twice.

I also learned to invest in classic pieces, like a navy blue Armani jacket, a Jean Paul Gaultier trench coat, well-tailored pants, Gucci loafers, cashmere knits and the best handbag you could afford.

While you had to save a great deal to buy them in the first place, they would look great for seasons and seasons to come.

As I got older and my income increased, I set myself a yearly budget for clothes and made sure I didn’t overspend, knowing that mortgages and school fees were on the horizon.

Once I learnt restraint, it stuck — I could like everything, I just couldn’t have everything. More than once I felt relief that I hadn’t bought into an expensive trend (the extreme shouldered Balenciaga jacket is one example) because it was literally out of vogue 12 months later and I would have been $4000 poorer.

I also don’t buy cheap clothes just because they are cheap. I don’t feel well-dressed in them. I would rather save and have something a little more special.

Thankfully my early experiences with online shopping were dismal — wrong sizes, things that did not live up to my expectations once they arrived.

But I can certainly see how sitting down after a long day at work with a glass of wine and a laptop and a sale at Net a Porter could be a highway to financial hell.

I used to lecture the girls in the fashion office about their lust for $2500 Givenchy shoes, advising them to buy a house first, so they would have somewhere to put the fashion. But it fell on deaf ears. Logic and fashion are not really compatible.

Marathon runner gives birth…unexpectedly

Marathon runner gives birth… unexpectedly

When aspiring marathon runner and mother-of-two Trish Staine started experiencing unbearable back pain, the last thing she expected was that she was pregnant. But just 24 hours later she was cradling a baby girl.

The 33-year-old US mum, who initially put the extreme pain down to a two-hour half-marathon training session, said she had no idea she was pregnant and had gained no weight in the months before.

“I had a sore back Sunday evening. I had taken a hot shower and I was dealing with it,” Trish said.

“Monday morning I woke up and had more back pain and as the day went on it got worse. I thought I should go to the ER. I thought I had ruptured a disc or pulled a muscle.”

But Trish decided to continue on with her day. It wasn’t until later in the evening, when her pain became unbearable, that her husband called an ambulance.

“I felt like I was dying. I didn’t know what was going on,” she said.

Once in the emergency room, Trish and her husband were stunned to discover that the nurses could detect a foetal heartbeat.

“I said no, no that’s impossible,” Trish said of her reaction to the news.

Trish was taken to the delivery room and said in “what felt like five minutes” her daughter was born, weighing 2.9 kilos and 48 centimetres long.

Born five weeks premature, the pair will be able to take home their baby – who they named “Mira”, short for miracle – in about a week. Trish says both her and her husband are still in shock.

“He’s still in shock. Everybody is teasing him,” Trish said. “I definitely thought I was done having kids!”

The pair already have two children, a seven-year-old daughter and a son, 11. Trish is also stepmum to her husband’s three boys aged 17, 19 and 20.

Your say: Have you or has anyone you know experienced something similar and not realised you were pregnant?

Jamie Durie

Jamie Durie is the guy you listen to when you need to re-do the patio or when you’re wondering whether a Bougainvillea is right for your garden, but is he the go-to-guy when you need a new moisturiser? Apparently so.

The 42-year-old has just added an organic skin care range to his business empire because with hosting television shows, writing nine books and not only founding but directing his company, Durie Design isn’t keeping him busy enough.

While a jump from the backyard to the beauty industry seems a little far-fetched, Jamie’s passion for the range certainly isn’t lacking.

The ultimate DIY guy turned domestic goddess welcomed half of Sydney’s beauty industry into his multi-story Palm Beach home last Tuesday for the launch of the skincare range, ‘People for Plants’.

Beauty editors sipped on organic juices over lunch in the living room, Jamie and his two friends who co-founded the plant-based range talked aloe vera, jojoba and all things flora.

As a horticulturist, Jamie isn’t foreign to plant talk and as a business man, Jamie knows how to sell a product but he insists he doesn’t need to do the latter.

“We’re not here to sell the product to you. The product sells itself. We want you to be the judge”, he said.

The range, which has passed the tests of Australian Certified Organics, will face it’s biggest test when it hits Australian shelves this year.

So for $30 you can decide whether Jamie should have stuck to fixing our homes and left our faces alone.
