Pregnancy belt lets dads feel babies kicking

Pregnancy belt lets dads feel babies kicking

Once conception has occurred, men don’t traditionally have a lot to do with pregnancy, other than rushing out in the middle of the night to buy ice cream, pickles and anything else his partner is craving, but that could be about to change.

A revolutionary new belt has been developed that allows dads-to-be to feel their baby’s kicks in their own stomachs.

The twin belts — which took baby company Huggies four months to develop — measures the kicks in the pregnant woman’s stomach and then transfers them to the man’s belly in real time.

The company invited several future fathers to try out the new technology, leaving all of them in tears as they felt their children kick for the first time.

“Pregnancy has always been about her,” the Huggies video says. “That’s why we did something special to compensate fathers — we developed a belt that replicates in real time, a baby’s kicks and sends them from mum’s belly to dad’s belly.”

Watch the video above to see the emotional reactions the fathers have to feeling their little one’s kicks.

Jen and Justin move into their dream home

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux have finally moved in to their Bel Air estate after renovations wrapped up last week.

The engaged couple didn’t spare any expense on their new $21 million home, with even an old chicken coop getting a makeover!

Public records filed with the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety state that the Friends actress decided to keep the old owner’s chicken coop on the grounds of the 3.5 acre property.

The nest, which is located behind the guest house, has had some modifications made, including a new wooden deck.

In an interview last year, Jen revealed that she had adopted the family of chickens when she purchased the estate.

“They’re very social animals and they like it when you visit them with a cup of coffee in your hand,” she told The Globe. “According to my groundskeeper, they love pasta.”

Jen and Justin’s new home also includes a swimming pool, wine cellar, library, two kitchens, a dining room overlooking an outdoor water feature, and a projection room.

The pair’s neighbours in the exclusive gated community include Hugh Hefner and Nicolas Cage.

Teens prefer time with mum and dad to Facebook friends

Teens prefer time with mum and dad to Facebook friends

They’re dubbed the iGeneration, constantly attached to computers and smartphones and more socially active online than in the playground, but a study of the after school habits of Aussie teens reveals they prefer spending time at home with mum and dad than Facebook friends.

The in-depth study which looked at 200 Canberra teenagers between the ages of 12 and 18 found they ranked spending time with family as their number one after school activity.

Surprisingly, homework, watching TV, doing chores, sport and spending time with friends all out-ranked using technology, thwarting assumptions that kids spend all day online.

The study found that 80 per cent of teens have a Facebook account, but less than half of those are active on the online social network each day.

The study’s author, Dr Karen Macpherson said the study suggested that the habits of young people aren’t so different to previous generations, as is often assumed.

Related: Parents have given up on table manners

“We really need to rethink our stereotypes of modern teenagers,” Dr Macpherson told Fairfax Media.

“No one would argue against the fact that teenagers have welcomed digital technologies into their lives with open arms. But it may be that the popular stereotype of teenagers as being consumed by Facebook and computer games needs some rethinking.”

Women put 500 chemicals on their bodies every day

Women put 500 chemicals on their bodies every day

Moisturiser, perfume, make-up and sunscreen are just some of the substances we slap on each day without thinking, but have a think about it: Do you really know what you’re putting on your skin?

A UK natural deodorant manufacturer has found that the average woman willingly “wears” over 500 chemicals each day, with one moisturiser containing up to 30 different chemicals and perfume as many as 400.

And researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, recently found that lipstick can contain as many as nine different toxic metals — some at levels that could raise potential public health concerns.

The Berkeley study’s author, Professor Katharine Hammond, said that while the presence of metals detected in the 32 lipsticks tested was not concerning, it’s the levels of those substances that matter.

“Some of the toxic metals are occurring at levels that could possibly have an effect in the long term,” she said.

Although many products contain chemicals and metals in particular, lipstick and lip glosses are of particular concern, the study warned, as they are easily ingested or absorbed by the wearer.

A daily ingestion of 24mg of make-up per day could mean consumption of small amounts of metals such as lead, and if used twice daily, lipstick could account for more than 20 per cent of a person’s daily intake of aluminium, cadmium and manganese.

Increased concern over chemicals in make-up and skin products has seen a shift towards organic and natural make-up, but consumers who are worried about what they’re putting on their skin should do research beyond the products’ labels, Australia’s largest organic products certifier has warned.

“Organic standards regulate that only mild chemical processes are used [in] manufacturing, and the resulting ingredients are safe according to the scientific literature available, and free of genetically modified materials,” Australian Certified Organic officer Jorge Larranaga told News Limited.

“A list of [ingredients it doesn’t contain] doesn’t mean a product is free of synthetic chemical. It’s just free of the ones that are recognised by consumers.”

Jessica Simpson sued for pretending fan’s baby is her own

Jessica Simpson *OK!* cover.

Jessica Simpson is being sued by fans who claim she posed with their baby and then pretended it was her own on the cover of a magazine.

Christopher Hurst and Tracy Gregory from Louisiana have filed a lawsuit against Jessica, OK! magazine and Getty Images for using a picture of their baby son without permission.

The saga began in 2011 when Christopher took his teenage daughter to see Jessica at a meet-and-greet at Lakeside Shopping Center in Metairie, Los Angeles.

Christopher took his baby son too, also named Christopher, and while they were waiting in line, two strangers approached and asked if Jessica could have her photo taken with the baby.

Christopher claims he “reluctantly” agreed and a photographer from Getty snapped dozens of pictures of Jessica and the baby.

Six months later, one of those pictures appeared on the cover of the April 16 2012 issue of OK! magazine next to the headline “The star opens up about her beautiful girl”.

The text accompanying the image made it seem like baby Christopher was in fact Jessica’s new daughter Maxwell.

Christopher and Tracy’s lawsuit seeks $75,000 in damages, claiming OK! intended to mislead its audience into believing baby Christopher was Jessica’s child.

The lawsuit goes on to claim that Jessica and Getty Images were in on the scheme and planned to make money by passing off the image as Jessica and her own baby.

“In the case of Christopher Hurst, OK! magazine paid him nothing, despite clear intention to mislead some or all of the consuming public into believing the photograph on the cover of the subject issue was actually Simpson’s first child,” the paperwork reads.

“Jessica knew that she would appear on front of the magazine with Christopher in her arms and that she had financial motive through the publicity she received.”

Queen visits Philip in hospital on his 92nd birthday

Queen visits Philip in hospital on his birthday

The Queen arriving to visit her husband in hospital.

Queen Elizabeth paid a visit to her convalescing husband Prince Philip in hospital yesterday to help him celebrate his 92nd birthday.

The monarch, 87, smiled as she arrived at the London Clinic, clutching an envelope for her husband in one hand and waving to well-wishers with the other.

The envelope, addressed to “HRH The Duke of Edinburgh”, is believed to have contained a birthday card as Philip turned 92 on Monday.

Philip was admitted to private hospital the London Clinic last week to have exploratory surgery on his abdomen, which has been troubling him for months.

The surgery was a success, but he will remain in hospital for two weeks and have a further two months off official duties after that.

“His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh is progressing according to plans at this early stage,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.

“He is comfortable and in good spirits. He will remain in hospital for up to two weeks, and it is expected he will then be taking a period of convalescence of approximately two months.”

The Duke has been ill with increasing regularity in the past few years.

He took ill during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations last year, spending five nights in hospital with a bladder infection.

The same infection flared up again in August, resulting in another hospitalisation.

The previous Christmas he spent four nights in hospital after heart surgery to clear a blocked coronary artery.

His recent poor health has led to calls for the Duke to slow down. He is currently one of the hardest-working members of the royal family, undertaking 350 engagements a year.

“This has been a difficult decision for us as we care very deeply about one another. We ask for privacy as we deal with this family matter.”

“I had stopped dating altogether. I mean, you have to sit down and think, ‘How do you trust your judgement?’ But I saw Jane walking in the lobby and I thought, ‘I’m supposed to follow her.’ It was like I’d been picked up in a fishing net,” Lara told Vogue magazine of the night the pair first met.
