Why we eat less but weigh more than 30 years ago

Why we eat less but weigh more than 30 years ago

Why we eat less but weigh more than 30 years ago

Healthy eating messages are sinking in but despite improving our diets the average weight and waist size continues to increase, new research shows.

A five-year study by the Institute of Fiscal Studies in Britain recorded a 20 per cent drop in average daily calorie consumption compared to 30 years ago.

An average daily diet was found to include 600 fewer calories, equivalent to a complete hearty meal or a big slice of cake, but average weight has ballooned by around 13.5kg.

The study cited Britons’ “couch potato” lifestyle as a contributing factor, but said laziness could not completely account for the average weight gain.

Age was cited as a hindrance to keeping weight down, as the study suggested adult become more susceptible as they get older to the effect of some sugars and fats found in modern food.

Despite the significant weight gain, those studied were found to have much better eating habits at home consuming cereal for breakfast rather than fried food, eating more fish and less red meat, and drinking less alcohol.

However, outside the home, adults were more likely to consumer high calorie snack food like burgers and coffee.

Nutritionist Lola Berry was not surprised by the study, telling aww.com.au stress, lack of sleep, and being time-poor all contributed to modern difficulties with losing weight.

“I definitely notice a correlation between stress levels, sleep and weight gain,” she says.

“We’re more time poor than ever, more stressed out, and when we’re stressed out we increase a hormone called cortisol which stops you from losing weight.”

Australians are working more and sleeping less than ever before, and it’s affecting our eating patterns and our ability to maintain a healthy weight, Ms Berry says.

“If you get less than six hours sleep you’ll find you’re craving sugars. You’ll get hungrier, want sweet things, and don’t feel full,” she says.

While lack of physical activity does account for some weight gain, Ms Berry said diet was most important, and while studies suggest our eating habits are improving, our lack of “mindful eating” is taking its toll on the waist line.

“Maintaining a healthy weight is 70 per cent diet and 30 per cent exercise,” she says.

“We’re eating on autopilot and often skipping meals which party explains why we’re eating fewer calories.

“We need to practice mindful eating — sitting down, enjoying your food, and thinking about what you’re eating throughout the day.”

Nigella Lawson and Charles Saatchi

Nigella Lawson’s husband has been cautioned by police for assault over a public incident which he describes as a “playful tiff”.

Charles Saatchi was pictured grabbing wife Nigella’s throat during a vicious restaurant bust-up in images published in a London weekend newspaper which the 70-year-old himself describes as “horrific”.

The art tycoon and advertising mogul, who has been married to TV chef Nigella Lawson for almost ten years, has been quizzed for five hours by police after an investigation following the publication of the incriminating pictures, and was issued with a warning.

Earlier, he gave a statement excusing his behaviour brushing of the incident as a “tiff”.

“About a week ago, we were sitting outside a restaurant having an intense debate about the children, and I held Nigella’s neck repeatedly while attempting to emphasise my point,” Saatchi said in a statement.

“There was no grip, it was a playful tiff. The pictures are horrific but give a far more drastic and violent impression of what took place. Nigella’s tears were because we both hate arguing, not because she had been hurt.”

Saatchi’s explanation doesn’t quite square with accounts from eyewitnesses who told Sunday People the TV star was terrified.

“I have no doubt she was scared. It was horrific, really. She was very tearful and was constantly dabbing her eyes. Nigella was very, very upset,” an onlooker said.

“She appeared to be a woman who loves him but was clearly unable to stop him being abusive, frightening and disrespectful to her.”

An emotional Nigella was seen leaving her home with a packed suitcase flanked by her teenage son yesterday only hours after the images went public.

Her husband denied she was fleeing, saying they had agreed she would leave “until the dust settled”.

“We had made up by the time we were home. The paparazzi were congregated outside our house after the story broke yesterday morning, so I told Nigella to take the kids off until the dust settled,” he said.

Kim Kardashian on pregnancy: ‘I can never do this again’

Kim Kardashian on pregnancy: ‘I can never do this again’

While Kim Kardashian has welcomed a healthy baby girl, the first-time mum says she is not looking forward to another pregnancy.

Kim’s daughter with boyfriend Kanye West was born five weeks early on June 15 at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

On the latest episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians Kim reveals that her pregnancy was far from easy and she had numerous complications.

At one point Kim began experiencing severe stomach pains on a flight to LA. She was rushed to hospital amid fears she had appendicitis.

The pain was so extreme that Kim revealed she couldn’t go through another pregnancy.

“It was a really painful flight, it hurt so badly. I can hardly walk,” a teary-eyed Kim told her mum Kris.

As Kim explained to the doctor: “I just don’t understand. It just hurts so bad, it kills.

“It feels like I am in labour. Why is this happening to me? I hate it, I can never do this again.

“If labour is worse than this I will hang myself. I will literally take a knife and slit my throat.”

Kim was later relieved to discover that the baby had a healthy heartbeat. Blood tests soon revealed that Kim wasn’t suffering appendicitis, but had a stomach infection.

“For her to be in this much pain scares me so much. I want her to relish this pregnancy. It is the most amazing experience and I feel she is just not having that yet,” Kim’s mum Kris said of the situation.

In the episode, Kim also opens up about her divorce from her second husband Kris Humphries, to whom she was married for just 72 days. While the pair have now settled their divorce proceedings, they were still finalising their divorce when Kim discovered she was pregnant to Kanye.

“My divorce has definitely been dragging on for a while now and Kanye and I want it to be done by the time the baby gets here,” she said.

“I really do not want to be married while I give birth to our baby. I have been trying to get it done for a year-and-a-half now.

“I am just so bothered and sad over this situation.”

While waiting to appear for her deposition Kim reveals that she still cares about her estranged husband.

“At our lunch break I am going to want to talk to him and say, ‘It literally never had to get like this,’” Kim said.

“I like, loved you, I still do, you were a big part of my life. But you know we are not meant to be together. You weren’t happy, I wasn’t happy, we should have never rushed into it. It doesn’t mean we can’t, like, be friends.

“I have not spoken to Kris for a year-and-a-half. I am anxious see Kris, I hope this will maybe give him and I an understanding of his feelings and my feelings as we have not spoken in so long.”

But Kris didn’t show up and Kim left feeling “relieved” that the pair could move on with their divorce.

Nigella flees home after publication of choking images

Nigella flees home after publication of choking images

Nigella Lawson has been spotted leaving her London home with a suitcase in hand after pictures were released of her apparently being choked by her husband.

Photographs of the UK-based foodie were published in Sunday People showing Nigella, 53, and her husband, 70-year-old Charles Saatchi, dining at popular celebrity restaurant Scott’s, in central London. In the series of disturbing images, Charles is seen reaching across the table and appears to grab her by the throat a number of times. Nigella appears fearful throughout the ordeal and leaves the restaurant crying.

Following the publication of the pictures, Nigella and Bruno, her teenage son from her first marriage, were spotted leaving the multi-million dollar mansion they share with Charles. She also has a daughter, Cosima, 19.

Witnesses who were dining at the restaurant when the incident took place said Nigella looked frightened.

“It was utterly shocking to watch,” one diner told Sunday People.

“I have no doubt she was scared. It was horrific, really. She was very tearful and was constantly dabbing her eyes.”

During the altercation, none of the diners intervened. A police spokesman said Lawson had not filed a complaint with police.

“Officers from the Community Safety Unit at Westminster are aware of the Sunday People article. Enquires are in hand to establish the facts of the incident,” the spokesman said.

While the pair haven’t revealed their child’s name yet, friends of the pair say it will start with a K and the middle name could be Donda, after West’s late mother.

Meanwhile, Kim’s mum Kris has revealed it’s very possible that Kim and Kanye could walk down the aisle, but insists that the wedding will be a lot smaller than her previous wedding to Kris Humphries.

“This time it will be private and smaller. If she does get married again – not 500 people.”

Kim’s cheating nightmare: He won’t return my calls

Kim's cheating nightmare: He won't return my calls

Model claims she and the muso hooked up after he told her he’s with Kim “just for publicity”.

Kim Kardashian is in crisis mode after explosive allegations that Kanye West cheated on her several times – even while she was pregnant. As the scandal broke in the US, a source extremely close to the Kardashian family tells Woman’s Day that they’re scrabbling to make sense of a Canadian model’s claims that Kanye has been wooing her in New York behind LA-based Kim’s back for more than a year.

“With a baby on the way, this is truly the worst thing that can happen to Kim,” the insider confides to us. “Kanye won’t even pick up the phone. “Right now, the Kardashians are approaching the whole thing as if it’s not true, but Kanye is a rich rapper who doesn’t hang around with Kim much. To me, there has always been something off about Kanye insisting he stay in New York for weeks on end.” And Leyla Ghobadi, the woman who gave a detailed account of her alleged affair with Kanye to US magazine Star, isn’t backingdown from her claims, despite statements from Kanye’s camp that she’s making it all up for money and fame.

According to the 24-year-old, the year-long affair with Kanye began after he plucked her from the front row of his Atlantic City concert in July last year. Never mind that Kim was seated just metres away in the VIP section, blissfully unaware of his actions.

“He pointed me out to one of the bodyguards and I thought I was in trouble,” Leyla recalls. “A bunch of them grabbed me off my friend’s shoulders and brought me backstage.” Minutes later, during a break, Kanye invited Leyla to join him that night at an after-party. Kim was in the audience, but she never made it to the club. Leyla did. “We spoke for a good two hours and hit it off great,” says Leyla. “He invited me back to his hotel but I refused.”

Read all of the details about Kim and Kanye’s cheating scandal in this week’s Woman’s Day, on sale Monday, June 17 2013.
