Julia Gillard: Greer slurs catty and stupid

Prime Minister's office reponds to Women's Weekly shoot

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has described the comments that feminist Germaine Greer made about her “fat arse” as both catty, and stupid.

In an interview with The Weekly, Ms Gillard said she could “roll with the punches” when it came to personal abuse, but thought Dr Greer had demeaned herself, by stooping to make nasty remarks about the Prime Minister’s body shape.

It happened last March, when Dr Greer was a guest on the ABC’s Q and A program. Panellists were talking about Ms Gillard’s image. Dr Greer, who has devoted her life to feminist principles, including the idea that women should not be judged by appearance, derided the PM’s wardrobe, and said: “You’ve got a big arse, Julia, just get on with it.”

In an interview at Kirribilli House in June, Ms Gillard told The Weekly that she thought Greer’s “demeaned her more than it demeaned me”.

“It was just kind of dumb is the best reaction,” she said. “I do take a lot of pride in being someone who not only fought for equal opportunities for women.

“I hope, in the future, there will be girls who watch me do this who will say to themselves and say to each other, ‘I could do that too’ whereas when I was their age the only role models were male role models.

“You said to anyone, ‘Close your eyes and imagine a Prime Minister’ and people would imagine a man in a suit. I would hope that in the years to come when people say ‘Close your eyes and imagine a PM’ and people would be equally likely to think of it being a woman because I’ve done this.”

Asked whether the comments were personally hurtful, Ms Gillard said: “Do I like people cracking jokes about my body shape … well, you know I can roll with the punches, I don’t get worked up about that kind of stuff.

“But for her, given everything she stands for, everything she would have inspired, I just thought it was stupid.”

Ms Gillard said people who “want to be stereotypical about women will look at that and say, ‘It just goes to show, it doesn’t matter if it’s a female prime minister and a feminist icon … they’re just as catty as the two women down the local coffee shop.’

“It frustrated me that she, of all people, would catapult into that kind of conduct. I don’t want that to be the image of women.”

Prime Minister’s office responds to Women’s Weekly shoot

Prime Minister's office reponds to Women's Weekly shoot

The Prime Minister’s press office, headed up by Director of Communications John McTernan, has released a statement addressing its involvement in the photo shoot and article about Julia Gillard in July issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly.

The statement, published in full below, denies organising the shoot. However in an email to The Weekly a staffer clearly outlines the idea of a knitting pattern.

“I’m keen to discuss options for an interview/photoshoot with the PM, ideally for the July edition,” an email from the Prime Minister’s Office dated April 10 read.

“As I mentioned the PM is putting together a care package for Kate Middleton, who is due in mid-July, and I was thinking this would make a great story for the magazine. I’m picturing a story that includes the patterns for the items the PM will knit so your readers can knit their own royal blanket or something.”

The statement released this afternoon expressed concerns from the PM’s team about the number and variety of shots published.

Any readers who would like to read more of Associate Editor Caroline Overington’s interview with Ms Gillard, and see more of the photographs, can do so here on our website.

Background on Women’s Weekly article and photo shoot

Women’s Weekly requested an interview and photo shoot in March.

It was suggested by the PMO that a news angle for the story could be the Prime Minister’s gift of a knitting package (wool, patterns, and knitted toy) for Kate Middleton, for the July edition.

Women’s Weekly agreed to the idea of the article.

Women’s Weekly arranged the photo shoot, including requesting that the Prime Minister knit and that her dog, Reuben, attend.

Women’s Weekly claim that the PMO organised the photo shoot:

Overington — ABC Melbourne — 25 June 2013

The difficulty was because it was organised by her media team.

In fact, Women’s Weekly had complete creative control over the photo shoot. The PMO did not rule in or rule out any particular shot.

An estimated 400 shots were taken.

Shots of the PM were taken with and without knitting needles and wool, with and without Reuben, and in a formal outfit and an informal outfit. Reuben was also photographed with the knitted roo.

It was entirely Women’s Weekly’s choice to publish the image they did.

The PMO agreed to a wide-ranging interview. Caroline Overington interviewed the PM for one hour on her achievements, leadership, misogyny, knitting, the Royal Family, Kyle Sandilands.

Not a word of this interview appeared in the article published in Australian Women’s Weekly.

Gwyneth Paltrow: "Sex keeps me young"

While most celebrities credit a beauty cream or super food as the key to staying young, Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t one of them.

The 40-year-old actress credits her youthful looks to sex and self-discovery.

Gwyneth, who is known for her controversial lifestyle choices, said there’s not much to it.

“Honestly, it’s pretty basic stuff, like exercise and self-discovery,” she told OK! US recently.

“Looking at life as an opening and an adventure – and love and sex.”

The Iron Man 3 star is currently taking time away from the big screen to spend time with her two children and husband Chris Martin of Coldplay.

“You realise that the love you have for the people in your life, and their love for you, is all that matters,” she said.

Gwyneth recently opened up about the miscarriage of her third child which almost killed her, and said she is still “missing” the baby.

Gwyneth said she is open to having more children and that her two kids always ask for another sibling.

Pink’s happy news! Baby number two!

Nicole lashes out at Joel: How could you!

The singer is bringing a little extra baggage on her Aussie tour.

Pink’s two-year-old daughter Willow will soon have a new playmate with the singer expecting her second baby! While she is yet to confirm the news, a source tells Woman’s Day that Pink, 33, recently declined an invitation to perform at an Australian charity benefit, citing pregnancy as the reason.

“We would have loved to have her take part [in the event],” says the source. “But she said she was pregnant and couldn’t commit to it.” Rumours that Pink and husband CareyHart, 37, were expecting a new addition began when observers noticed the Grammy winner sporting what appeared to be a baby bump.

The whispers got even louder after the decision to scrap a documentary about her life, ostensibly because of “logistical and financial reasons”. The star confessed in September that she was eager to add to her brood. “I’m ready,” she told Access Hollywood, adding that if she wasn’t about to go on tour she’d “be barefoot and pregnant in my garden”.

But while it looks like Pink has sped up her concert schedule, Australian fans shouldn’t worry about her cancelling The Truth About Love tour, kicking off in Perth this week. After all, this is the rocker who performed her single Raise Your Glass at the American Music Awards when she was four months pregnant with Willow.

Kim and Kanye planning Paris wedding

Kanye on Kim: She could love me without asking for money

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have only just welcomed their daughter, North West, to the world but it looks like the pair are already planning their wedding.

Kanye asked Kim to marry him just days after North, nicknamed Nori, was born.

Kimye are now planning a September wedding in Paris, British newspaper The Sun reports.

While Kanye is yet to propose officially, he has given the mother of his child a “push-present”, an $AU832,000 rare black tiger-stripe diamond ring.

“Kanye wasted no money in making sure Kim had the best of everything while she was in hospital,” an unnamed source told the paper.

“He has spent half a million [British pounds] on a ring as a push present and had it designed months ago in preparation.

“He’s even more in love with her now than ever and they can’t wait to get married.”

Kardashian matriarch, Kim’s mum Kris Jenner, recently revealed that Kim’s next wedding wouldn’t be as big an affair as her last, to Kris Humphries.

“This time it will be private and smaller. If she does get married again – not 500 people,” she said.

Kim recently left Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, where she had been for four days after her baby arrived five weeks early.

No expense was spared on medical treatment and accommodation for mother and child. According to The Sun’s source, Kim and Kanye rented three deluxe suites costing more than $AU4000 per night each.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom suites came equipped with flat-screen TVs, leather sofas, dining areas, marble bathrooms, and personal chefs who were on call 24/7.

William rushes to Kate’s side

William rushes to Kate's side

With baby arriving any day, a nervous Duchess needs her husband more than ever.

Prince William is waiting and ready to rush to Kate’s side at any moment for the birth of the royal heir to the throne. When that call comes, the excited father-to-be will probably be airlifted from Wales, where he’s based as a helicopter pilot, to London so he can be welcome his first child into the world.

In an unprecedented and wide-ranging statement to the media, the palace indicated the birth is imminent, with royal aides making the revelation that as soon as the Duchess of Cambridge goes into labour they’ll make a public announcement.

Meanwhile, Prince William’s commitment is welcome news for his usually unflappable 31-year-old wife, who, sources say, has come down with a case of pre-birth nerves as her July 13 due date approaches.

“She’s normally a very brave, no-nonsense girl. But with the big day getting nearer, Kate’s told William she wants him with her constantly. She’s terrified he won’t be there if she goes into labour early,” a source tells UK mag Now. “This is uncharted territory for both of them. It’s exciting though, and she knows he’ll do everything in his power not to let her down. He realises she’s feeling vulnerable.”
