Only in America: Designer bags with gun compartments

Only in America: Designer bags with gun compartments

Kate Woolstenhulme for Designer Concealed Carry. $344.

A US designer has created a range of luxury handbags with built-in gun compartments.

With the motto “fashion that fits any lifestyle, holster that fits any handgun”, the Designer Concealed Carry collection features a wide range of bags from a $269 canvas carrier to a $4200 crocodile skin version.

Every design has dual locking zippers for right and left hand access to the holster pocket, where the gun is kept secure with special “quick release” straps.

Inside, there are special elastic loops for pens, a torch, pepper spray and a baton.

It might seem like a niche market, but the label has been an overwhelmed by customer demand. Several of the designs are sold out and others have long waiting lists.

Kate Woolstenhulme for Designer Concealed Carry. $344.

Kate Woolstenhulme, who founded the company in 2009, says sales are up 30 per cent so far this year.

She came up with the idea after she purchased her first handgun in 2008 and realised there were no stylish handbags that allowed her to carry her gun safely.

“At the time, the handbags that were out there were done by holster-makers who are really into function, certainly, but not style,” Woolstenhulme told Fashionista.com.

“I looked and looked — I even bought two or three fashion handbags and tried to modify them, but it didn’t work.”

“So I decided to try and make something that is fashionable for women who don’t want to leave their personality at the front door.”

Rich children have ‘smarter genes’, study claims

Rich children have 'smarter genes', study claims

Children from wealthy families may do better at school than their poorer classmates because of superior genetic “inherited abilities”, according to a new Federal Government report.

The controversial claim is made in a Productivity Commission research paper, published today, that examines the reasons behind the cycle of disadvantage in Australia.

Parental brain power and inherited genes are named as a significant influence in kids from low socio-economic groups performing worse at school than more privileged ones.

Entitled Deep and Persistent Disadvantage in Australia, the report says “one explanation for differences in educational attainment between children of low and high socio-economic backgrounds is parents’ cognitive abilities and inherited genes”.

However, the authors acknowledged that while one British study concluded this could account for 20 per cent of the gap in test scores between the richest and poorest families, it is a controversial and hard to measure area “because of the interactions between genes and the environment”.

Other factors in the discrepancy include access to resources such as books, computers and study space, parents’ attitudes and aspirations, schools and personal character traits.

Unemployment was linked to “poorer parenting skills” and bad behaviour in children, while positive family environments that supported reading, interaction and learning had the opposite effect.

The report paints a bleak picture for kids from poor backgrounds, who are already “behind the eight ball” when they start school and fall further behind as they get older.

But having parents who show interest and are positive role models is likely to help these children defy the odds and succeed in later life, evidence showed. Going to school with higher achievers had the same effect.

Hospital transformed into tourism hot spot in wait for Kate

Hospital transformed into tourism hot spot in wait for Kate

The newly erected media pen outside London's St Mary's Hospital.

The royal baby is set to become one of the world’s biggest celebrities and the crowd surrounding the hospital where the Prince or Princess of Cambridge is due to make its entrance into the world confirms he or she will have to get used to life in front of the camera from day one.

The usually quiet entrance to the prestigious Lindo Wing of Paddington’s St Mary’s hospital has been transformed into one of London’s biggest tourist attractions as the world waits for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first child to arrive.

Though the newest addition to the royal family isn’t due to arrive for a few days at least, media and well-wishers alike are already lining the pavement opposite the steps where the baby’s will make its first appearance.

The skeleton of a media mob was set up ten days ago with dozens of film crews staking out their spots to get the first shots of the royal baby and its proud parents, causing cameramen to already grow weary from the waiting game ahead of the baby’s July 13 due date.

Waiting around the clock in the unusual London heat is tiresome for some, but the dedicated reporters and camera crews have been entertaining themselves by holding a sold out sweepstake, placing bets on when the baby will arrive and pinning joke tags with messages like “please do not feed the photographers” to ladders and gates as some claim they are “dying of boredom”.

Fuelling the ever growing press pack staking out the site of the royal birthing suite is the hospital’s Starbucks coffee shop directly across from the Lindo Wing’s entrance.

The humble cafe is dealing with an unprecedented spike in business and although it’s busier than ever, it has made the decision to operate the store sans managers for fear of celebrity and they became sought-after commentators by the surrounding media.

“It’s not usually like this, to say we’ve been busy is an understatement,” a harried barista yells from over the counter.

“It’s certainly a challenge.”

Local police are on 24-hour watch keeping the press pack under control and adding to hospital security around the royal baby’s birth location, though officers told The Weekly their main role over the past few days has been informing passers-by and hospital-goers what all the commotion is about.

Of course many visitors, like American tourist Patricia Polallo, don’t need to be told why the hospital is quickly becoming a media circus.

The flight attendant came all the way from Chicago and told The Weekly she “just had to come down” to the Lindo wing.

“I only have a short amount of time in London and there was no way I was’t going to stop by and take a picture,” she told The Weekly.

“It’s a once in a lifetime thing.”

Local mum Hazel Vedmore has noticed a lot more foot traffic around her Paddington home just around the corner from the hospital, and says there has been a great deal more interest in the hospital’s maternity wing than there was when she gave birth to her daughter there nine months ago.

After being snapped outside the wing’s entrance as Kate is expected to be as she departs the hospital to bring the youngest royal home — Ms Vedmore’s own “royal baby moment” — she tells The Weekly she was “treated like royalty” herself when she gave birth to baby Myrtle.

Though Ms Vedmore highly recommends the hospital — “it felt more like a hotel,” she says — she anticipates the Duchess will receive even better treatment in her $8000 per night exclusive birthing suite.

Robyn, 24, has teamed up with Bond-Eye Australia to launch a glamorous collection of bikinis and one-pieces in sizes 12 to 22.

The curvy size 16 beauty said her own struggle to find swimwear that wasn’t “boring” and “unflattering” inspired her line.

Royal baby and Blue Ivy will be cousins

Royal baby and Blue Ivy will be cousins

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Beyonce and Jay-Z.

William and Kate’s baby is directly descended from Queen Elizabeth II but it will also be related to hip-hop royalty.

New research has revealed the Prince or Princess of Cambridge and Beyoncé Knowles and Jay-Z’s daughter Blue Ivy will be distant relatives.

Thanks to Blue Ivy’s ancient links to French royalty, and therefore the British royal family, the tots will be 23rd cousins twice-removed.

The royal baby will also have the (much diluted) blood of Hollywood royalty running through its veins.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner’s three kids will be 11th cousins, Celine Dion’s three children will be 26th cousins thrice-removed and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s kids will be 27th cousins.

The baby will also be related to Uma Thurman, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hilary Duff.

Researchers from genealogy company findmypast.co.uk looked into the family trees of the Queen, the Duchess of Cambridge and Princess Diana to uncover their relationships to various celebrities.

The royal baby is due on Saturday and London is on high alert, with photographers camped out outside the hospital where Kate will give birth and a helicopter on standby to whisk William to his wife’s side.

The Weekly joins the royal baby countdown in London

The Weekly joins royal baby watch in London

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Britain is buzzing with rare high temperatures in line with locals’ soaring spirits as the royal family prepares to welcome its newest addition, and The Weekly has touched down in London to join in the royal baby madness.

Still on a high from last week’s sporting victories which saw the Brits take home trophies from the Lions’ rugby tour win against Australia and Andy Murray’s Wimbledon success, preparations for the next round of celebrations are well underway as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expected to welcome their first child due this Saturday, July 13.

In pictures: Who will the royal baby look like?

Excitement and anticipation over the impending birth is unavoidable in central London where souvenir store shelves have been preemptively stacked with royal baby souvenirs and party fare for dedicated royal watchers to stock up on as they plan to celebrate the newest royal’s arrival.

News of a second royal baby has further fuelled excitement as Buckingham Palace has announced Zara Phillips is pregnant with another young royal due in the new year.

While royal baby news has dominated the UK papers since the Duchess’ pregnancy was announced in December, local media has gone quiet on the new little prince or princess as royal commentators, reporters and photographers play the waiting game, anxious and on call.

Media covering the birth have set up shop outside St Mary’s hospital where the new Prince or Princess of Cambridge is due to be delivered in the hospital’s Lindo Wing any day now.

Well-wishers are also beginning to gather alongside the press pen set up across the road from the hospital’s entrance hoping to witness the announcement of the royal baby’s arrival, and even catch a sight of the Duchess herself who hasn’t been seen publicly since June 15.

The Weekly has joined the countdown on the ground and will be bringing you all the latest royal baby news live from London.
