Queen greets Aussies at Ashes but departure sparks rumours

British businesses start to milk royal baby cash cow

The Queen meets Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke ahead of the Ashes second test at Lord's on Thursday.

It’s one of the world’s most vibrant cities but right now there are only two things happening in London: the royal family’s wait for it’s newest member and the Ashes.

The two collided today as the Queen greeted Australian and British cricketers at Lord’s ahead of the series’ second test.

Play was delayed by 15 minutes to make way for the monarch who stepped on to the green to cheerily greet players, not giving away which of countries the Queen reins over she would be barracking for on the day.

The Queen stayed long enough to see England lose three early wickets but her hurried departure fueled royal baby rumours.

Some speculating the sovereign may have made a dash to fulfill family duties with her great-grandchild, the first child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, due any day now.

As soon as she left her seat, social media buzzed with speculation and news helicopters spotted from Kensington Palace where The Weekly was stationed hovered hopefully around Paddington where Kate is to give birth.

The Queen yesterday suggested she was just as eager for the little Prince or Princess to arrive as the enthusiastic press pack stationed outside St Mary’s hospital, hoping the royal baby would be born within the week before she goes on holiday.

The appearance at Lord’s was one of the Queen’s final before she departs to Scotland for her annual summer retreat at her residence in Balmoral.

But alas, still no sign of baby.

Reporters could be waiting at wrong hospital for Kate

Reporters could be waiting at wrong hospital for Kate

Contingency plans are in place in case Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, goes into labour this week while at her parents’ house in Bucklebury, Berkshire.

Catherine and William are staying with her family while the prince has a few days off from his RAF duties. And since Kate is now thought to be past her due date, there’s a chance the baby may come while she’s there.

If labour starts and progresses quickly, Kate might be taken to Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading rather than St. Mary’s Royal Hospital, which is nearly 100 kilometres away in London.

“There are contingencies in place for wherever the Duchess happens to be, and one of them is the Royal Berkshire,” a source close to the royals told The Daily Telegraph.

“It is still a possibility that she could give birth there, though that would only be in extremis, as the expectation is that she will go to St. Mary’s.”

That’d leave the world’s media – who’ve been camped outside St. Mary’s for weeks now – in a mad scramble to get the story.

But if Kate has her baby at Royal Berkshire, it might just confirm her status as the new people’s princess.

That’s because it’s a public hospital without a private maternity wing, and their private rooms are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and can’t be booked in advance.

This means the Duchess could end up spending her first night with her newborn baby sharing a public ward with other mothers!

British businesses start to milk royal baby cash cow

A royal baby themed window display at Liberty department store in London.

The royal baby is expected to bring with it a boost to the British economy and local businesses are already starting to cash in on the Prince or Princess’s impending arrival with celebrations ranging between tasteful and tacky.

Apart from the question of when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first child will arrive, the biggest mystery surrounding his or her arrival is the name, and while sharing a name with the royal baby will be a source of pride for Brits it can also bring rewards.

Londoners will be listening out for the announcement before popping down to their local pub, as hotel chain Jury’s has announced it will gift a free bottle of champagne to patrons who share the name of the royal baby on the day of its arrival.

London’s Heathrow airport is also preparing to celebrate the birth by treating arriving passengers, anxious to hear if the Duchess has delivered during their flight, with an announcement and a gift box including tea and chocolates for the first hoard of travellers on the day.

Hotels and restaurants are taking advantage of royal baby fever offering royal-themed baby showers at St James’s five star hotel and club to mothers-to-be up until the end of the month, when the Duchess is due, and restaurants like The Cinnamon Club have more quirky offerings, with their ‘Royal Labour of Love Menu’ offering “five courses that mimic the stages of a nine-month pregnancy”.

While official memorabilia is on hold awaiting details of the baby’s name and date of birth, impatient merchants are already offering a range of souvenirs ahead of the new royal’s arrival.

See the weird and wonderful royal baby memorabilia flooding London stores here.

The Weekly has joined the countdown on the ground and will be bringing you all the latest royal baby news live from London.

One cannot wait! Queen gives Kate a delivery deadline

Queen seeks a maid for just $20k

The Queen is hoping the royal baby arrives soon so it doesn't interrupt her holiday.

The wait for the most anticipated arrival of the year continues to lengthen and even the Queen’s patience is wearing thin in the wait for the royal baby.

On a visit to Cumbria, the Queen revealed today that, like the rest of the world, she hopes her great-grandchild will arrive soon, because she is “going on holiday”.

Camilla spills: baby will be born ‘by the end of the week’

Speaking to a little girl in the crowd, the monarch revealed her reasons for a prompt arrival of the first child of her grandson Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge.

“I would very much like it to arrive because I’m going on holiday soon!” she said.

The Queen is scheduled to take her annual summer break in Balmoral at the end of next week, giving the Duchess a deadline to give birth within the next eight days.

Her Majesty didn’t reveal any inside details about Kate’s imminent delivery, saying there was “no sign yet” that the baby was about to arrive, but expressed she had no preference to welcome a new great-grandson or daughter.

“I don’t think I mind,” she said when asked if she was hoping for a boy or girl.

The Duchess of Cornwall expressed similar hopes for the royal baby’s arrival earlier in the week, telling wellwishers at a celebration for her 66th birthday the royal family were “waiting at the end of a telephone”.

Camilla said she hoped the newest addition for the royal family would arrive “by the end of the week”.

Dear Kate: What you need to know about being a mum

Media packed outside St Mary’s hospital in Paddington have been waiting for signs Kate was going into labour for almost three weeks now, setting up camp outside the Lindo Wing, where the baby is to be born, since the beginning of the month.

The rumoured due date of July 13 passed without any signs of the new baby, but the only confirmed details from the royal officials have revealed the baby is due “in July”.

Ewan McGregor: I don’t want my girls to think skinny is perfect

Ewan McGregor has battled Darth Vader, Somali warlords and a killer tsunami but it's the fight against body demons that has him rattled.
Ewan McGregor

Ewan McGregor has battled Darth Vader, Somali warlords and a killer tsunami but it’s the fight against body demons that has him rattled.

Ewan has four young daughters and the family live in image-obsessed LA, where children as young as three are diagnosed with eating disorders and 81 per cent of 10-year-olds are on a diet.

They’re scary statistics and something Ewan and his wife Eve Mavrakis think about every day.

“It’s something we’ve always try to be very, very aware of,” Ewan told The Weekly when we sat down with him in Sydney’s exclusive Darling Point in May.

“We live in LA and it’s everywhere — the idea that skinny is seen as right and ideal. It’s just so ridiculous. We are always very careful to make sure our kids know that’s not the truth.

“It’s just not true that we find one type of shape attractive as men. It’s about who you are you — that’s what is attractive about someone, not what shape they are. Take it from me.”

That Ewan has any children, let alone four, might come as a surprise to some readers.

The girls — Clara, 17, Jamyan, 12, Esther, 11 and two-year-old Annouk — are adopted but unlike other celebrities, like Angelina Jolie and Madonna, Ewan never talks about it.

But while he won’t be drawn on the specifics of the girls’ adoptions, the proud father is happy to talk about the girls themselves.

“I love my girls and I love having girls,” he says. “I couldn’t be happier. It’s a lovely relationship between a father and his daughter.”

You might wonder how Ewan has managed to keep his bevy of beautiful daughters under the radar in the current celebrity-obsessed era — and it’s something that’s got him puzzled too.

He isn’t sure why the paparazzi largely leave him and his family alone, but is very glad they do.

“I’m very lucky,” he says. “I think I’m not very interesting to them because I’ve been married for a very long time and I have children. My life is not that exciting.

“And that’s great. Long may it continue, because whenever I have had trouble with them it’s always to do with me and my children.

“I find it unacceptable that they are allowed to harass people with their kids and it makes you see red. It’s very difficult to keep yourself together.”

Ewan hasn’t always been settled and “boring”. When he first found fame in 1996 cult hit Trainspotting, he, like many other young stars, let it go to his head.

Before long, he was an alcoholic. Looking back, he can’t quite believe he made it out of that era alive.

“It was a huge, heady time and there were many people who didn’t come out of it alright,” he says. “I could have been one of those people, for sure.”

After four years of heavy partying, Ewan stopped drinking in 2000 and hasn’t touched alcohol since.

“Somewhere along the line I realised that work is the most important thing,” he says. “Acting is what gives me the most pleasure and joy but the minute you become more interested in what goes along with it — the parties — it doesn’t give you the same sort of satisfaction.

“I realised that and I changed my lifestyle. I stopped drinking and all of that stuff a long time ago and it has made me a happier person.”

Ewan was in Sydney to launch LG’s new home entertainment range. It might seem like an unusual partnership, but it’s a cause very close to Ewan’s heart.

“I love my TV — it’s where I catch up on a lot of movies. With work and the family I don’t see all the movies I would like to see at the cinema so having a great home cinema is really important to me.

“I’ve also spent a lot of my life waiting on film sets for everything to be just right. It takes a lot of time and a great deal of skill to make things look a certain way and on most TVs, all of that is just lost.

“These new LG TVs show things exactly as the filmmaker wants them to be seen so for me, that’s really satisfying.”

Kristi Abrahams sentenced to 16 years jail for killing her daughter Kiesha Weippeart

Kristi Abrahams sentenced to 16 years for killing Kiesha

Kiesha Weippeart

The mother of abused six-year-old Kiesha Weippeart has today been sentenced to a minimum of 16 years in jail for her murder, triggering outrage from the little girl’s supporters.

Kristi Abrahams, 30, and her boyfriend Robert Smith took Kiesha’s body into the bush and buried her in a shallow grave three years and three days ago.

The primary school student had died after receiving several blows to the head from her mother, who failed to call an ambulance.

Abrahams showed no emotion in court as she was taken into police cells after being sentenced, despite shouts of abuse from Kiesha’s supporters.

“Does having a bad upbringing and abuse give you the right to go and take people’s lives?” asked supporter Alison Anderson afterwards.

“She knew what she was doing. It’s just a cop-out. Kiesha was killed by a cold-blooded murderer.”

Although many complained the sentence was inadequate, Justice Ian Harrison said the decision had to be made “dispassionately” rather than by public opinion or commentary.

He described the murder as a result of the “unfortunate and frightening childhood” experienced by Abrahams, who was abused by her father and placed in inappropriate care. She also has an intellectual disability.

“The death of the deceased is the foreseeable and predictable consequence of preventable, cyclic abuse,” Justice Harrison said. “The offenders’ failings are mirrored in the failings of others.”

The murder, he said, was “a spontaneous act of violence and anger” intended to cause serious injury rather than a premeditated killing.

There was found to be insufficient evidence to prove the severe and repeated abuse suffered by Kiesha in her short life was committed by Abrahams.

Justice Harrison sentenced her to a maximum of 22 years, with a minimum non-parole period of 16 years. The charges included disposing of Kiesha’s body after her death.

Two weeks after Kiesha died, her mother called emergency services, claiming her daughter had gone missing that morning.

She made emotional public pleas for help in finding her “missing” six-year-old, sparking a major police hunt and an outpouring of public sympathy.

But police quickly realised circumstances were suspicious and a nine-month undercover investigation led to a confession from the couple.

Kiesha’s case was known to authorities and highlights failures in the system.

Jill Meagher’s killer Adrian Ernest Bayley appeals life sentence

Jill Meagher's killer appeals life sentence

Jill Meagher

The man who raped and killed Jill Meagher in a brutal attack that shocked the nation is appealing his life sentence for murder.

Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, was sentenced to life in jail, with a non-parole period of 35 years, for the attack on the popular ABC employee in Melbourne last year.

Bayley admitted to raping and killing the 29-year-old, then burying her body near a dirt road on the outskirts of Melbourne.

The murder was described as among the worst in Victorian history, sending shockwaves around the country.

Victorian Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Nettle described the rape as “savage and degrading”, while the murder was “among the worst kind conceivable”.

Bayley was on parole for prior rape convictions when he attacked Meagher, sparking public outrage. He wouldn’t have been given parole if he hadn’t pleaded guilty, the judge said.

Chilling CCTV footage showed Meagher’s last moments walking home after an evening out with friends before being pursued by Bayley.

The Victorian Supreme Court yesterday confirmed Bayley had launched an appeal against his sentence.

Brad and Ange to wed aboard the Queen’s holiday boat

Brad and Angelina to wed aboard the Queen’s holiday boat

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are planning to get married aboard the Hebridean Princess, a ship previously chartered by the Queen.

It had previously been reported that Brad and Angie would tie the knot at their French chateaux, but it seems son Maddox has changed their minds.

“It was Maddox who came up with the idea of the ship,” a source told The Sun. “He came across it after looking at photos of the Carnell Estate in Ayrshire [Scotland], where they stayed and all loved.

“It’s just what they’re after. It can hold up to 50 of their friends and family and serve as a traditional, romantic setting – all totally private.”

Hiring the ship would cost a pricey $450,000, although they would have the option of moving it around Scottish waters throughout the wedding celebrations.

“They could always sail to a secluded bay off the Orkney or Shetland islands and have the ceremony there,” the source continued. “The kids are all hooked on old British voyages, so they would love it. The fact that Maddox found it makes it more special.”

Queen Elizabeth has previously chartered the Hebridean Princess to sail around Scotland for family holidays and to celebrate her 80th birthday.
