Nigella on the way to quickie divorce

Nigella on the way to quickie divorce

Nigella Lawson’s divorce from Charles Saatchi is on the fast track after the High Court in London found that their marriage can be legally ended.

In a hearing that lasted less than a minute, District Judge Anne Aitken issued a “decree nisi” to conditionally approve the couple’s divorce.

Neither Nigella or Charles were present for the ruling.

Official court papers lodged by Nigella on July 9 cited “continuing unreasonable behaviour” by her husband as the reason for petitioning for divorce.

The documents also show that an “order for financial relief” has been approved between the two parties, meaning that they have probably reached a financial settlement in private.

It is thought that the pair kept their respective fortunes in order to make the divorce proceedings as smooth and quick as possible.

Yesterday’s ruling came seven weeks after shocking pictures emerged of Saatchi apparently choking Nigella at a London restaurant.

Saatchi, 70, and Lawson, 53, will now have to wait for a “decree absolute”, which is usually issued within six weeks, to officially end their 10-year marriage.

Angelina Jolie jets out of Sydney after mystery visit

Angelina Jolie jets out of Sydney after mystery visit

Hollywood megastar Angelina Jolie and her son Pax left Australia at 8.30am today after spending just one day in Sydney!

The two flew out of by private jet this morning, after arriving from Tokyo on Wednesday.

The A-list family were in Sydney not even two months ago as Brad promoted his movie World War Z.

On that visit, little Pax was seen carrying a large purple teddy bear.

And eyewitnesses who spotted him and his mum in Sydney yesterday said there was no mistaking that Pax was carrying that exact same toy.

It was previously been reported that Brad and Ange planned to buy a property in Sydney when he looked set to film blockbuster 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea in the city.

But he has since denied those reports.

“David Fincher is developing that and it’s really good. I’ve seen the visuals but that’s not me. I’m not coming for that,” he said of the movie.

However, he did not rule out a move to Sydney in the future.

“We are migratory workers, we go where it takes it and it is just not out of the question.”

Judging from Angelina’s drop-in visit, perhaps Sydneysiders could have the Jolie-Pitts as neighbours in the not too distant future…

Nigella and Saatchi to divorce tomorrow

Nigella and Saatchi to divorce tomorrow

Nigella Lawson and Charles Saatchi will start their “quickie divorce” proceedings tomorrow, meaning their 10-year marriage could be over in a matter of minutes.

Nigella has filed an application to end the marriage after pictures emerged of Saatchi choking her and tweaking her nose in public.

A decree nisi, which is a statement from London’s High Court announcing that a divorce can go ahead, will be issued before 10.30am tomorrow, UK time.

Nigella and Saatchi will not need to be present at the hearing, and it is believed that both have agreed never to reveal the reasons behind or terms of the divorce.

Neither side are offering any defence or argument in the case, with Nigella having hired notorious divorce lawyer, Fiona Shackleton, to make arrangements on her behalf, and Saatchi choosing to represent himself.

Baroness Shackleton has previously advised the Prince of Wales in his divorce and represented Sir Paul McCartney.

The couple, who are worth an estimated $228 million, signed a pre-nuptial agreement when they wed in 2003.

After the pictures emerged, which showed Saatchi with his hands around his wife’s neck, he brushed off the incident as a “playful tiff”. He was later given a police caution for assault.

Saatchi then released a statement to The Mail, announcing that he had made the “heartbreaking decision” to divorce after his wife refused to defend him.

Nigella moved out of the family home with her son Bruno the day after the incident and never returned.

She will soon head to LA to film the new season of her hit ABC show The Taste.

The bets are on for the royal godparents

The bets are on for the royal godparents

Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton are the heavily priced favourites to be appointed as two of as many as six godparents to the new royal baby, Prince George.

British betting firm Ladbrokes has Uncle Harry and Aunt Pippa as the top contenders on a list that also includes Kate’s brother James, Olympic dressage gold medallist Laura Tomlinson and football legend David Beckham.

Prince George’s christening is set to take place in October in the music room of Buckingham Palace, the very place William was christened. Wills was baptised with six godparents – three godmothers and three godfathers.

Editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, Ingrid Seward, was quick to downplay Becks’ chances, telling People, “There are no hard and fast rules about this but I just know the royal family has never had a celebrity as a godparent.”

She was also quick to warn punters against backing Harry and Pippa, as she believes they will naturally play integral roles in the young Prince’s life, so “there is no real need” to make them godparents.

“Godparents don’t have to be your best friend. Quite often it is quite the opposite, it can be somebody quite random,” Ingrid explains.

Ingrid’s own list of frontrunners includes:

• Zara Tindall

• Sophie Wessex, wife of Wills’ uncle Prince Edward

• William’s best friends Thomas van Straubenzee, James Meade or Hugh Van Custem

• William’s former nanny Tiggy Legge-Bourke

• Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece, to who’s son William is also godfather

Lea Michele tweets fans after Glee boyfriend’s death

Lea Michele reaches out to fans after Glee boyfriend's death

“Cory will forever be in my heart.” This is the first public statement made by Glee actress Lea Michele since the death of her co-star and boyfriend, Cory Monteith.

Lea’s sorrowful Twitter post comes more than two weeks since Cory, 31, was found dead from a heroin and alcohol overdose in his hometown of Vancouver, Canada. The couple had been dating for a year.

Lea, 26, also used Twitter to thank her fans for their support, posting a happy picture of herself and Cory by the ocean.

“Thank you all for helping me through this time with your enormous love & support,” she wrote.

Lea has avoided the public eye while grieving Cory’s loss, only leaving home to go to a private memorial service, which was also attended by other Glee stars, including Dianna Agron, Amber Riley, Jane Lynch and Ryan Murphy.

20th Century Fox issued a statement saying that Glee’s season-five premiere will be delayed in the wake of the star’s death, and a special tribute will take place in the third episode.

The death of the rising young singer and actor has rocked Hollywood and left fans around the globe heartbroken.

Cory’s Glee co-star, Kevin McHale, earlier today posted a tribute to the performer: “So thankful that I and so many of you got to experience Cory’s overwhelming kindness, humor and talent. There will not be a day that goes by that I won’t miss him. Thank you all for your incredible support and patience.”

Leah Remini speaks out about Scientology split

Leah Remini speaks out about Scientology split

Just days after Woman’s Day revealed exclusively that the Church of Scientology had tried to “cure” Ricky Martin of his homosexuality, King Of Queens star Leah Remini has broken her silence about her split from the controversial religion.

A devout Scientologist for three decades, Leah, 43, severed all ties with the church earlier this month. The New York Post reports that Leah’s split from the church was a result of a clash between the star and church leader, David Miscavige.

Now the actress vows she won’t be silenced. “I believe that people should be able to question things. I believe that people should value family, and value friendships, and hold those things sacrosanct,” Leah told People magazine.

“That for me, that’s what I’m about. It wouldn’t matter what it was, simply because no one is going to tell me how I need to think, no one is going to tell me who I can, and cannot, talk to.”

A source told the Post that Leah was “interrogated” and “blacklisted”, and that the church put her through a “thought modification” program for five years.

The Church of Scientology teaches that humans are immortal beings who require spiritual and psychological rehabilitation to realise their cosmic abilities. It has a large celebrity following including Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Kirstie Alley.

To smack or not to smack?

To smack or not to smack?

To smack or not to smack?

To smack or not to smack, that is the question.

Bad puns aside, it is a regular discussion of modern parenting: whether giving your offspring a quick slap on the hand/leg/bottom should be allowable.

For this parent, it has been tried and tested with very different results.

My firstborn was a rare tantrumer, but when she did her turns were quite spectacular.

Once at the beach her tantrum escalated quickly, and I worried she would cause herself serious harm from thrashing about. As it was she already had a mouth full of sand. A quick smack to her leg stunned her into stopping, and I never needed the punishment again.

I felt truly awful: sobbing as soon as it happened, and vowing never to do it again.

Then came my second daughter, with her stubborn temper.

While I have never ventured down the path of a bottom or leg smack, I have tried several times to break her tantrums with a slap on the hand.

My attempts have been futile: if anything she has screamed louder, and harder.

But please don’t tell me you can reason with a one year old.

‘Time outs’ in her room simply did not work when she was so young. As she nears two, there is better comprehension about what is right or wrong and now I use ‘time outs’ for both children with a fairly decent success rate.

I have moved on from smacking, but that’s not to say I disagree with it in the right circumstances. But I know, I know: the ‘right circumstances’ are probably impossible to define.

My own experiences echo the issues with trying to ban smacking: there are so many shades of grey.

Most of my mummy friends have smacked their children at least once. None have lost control; none have abused their children. All of them are terrific parents.

Their children are generally lovely too: but when toddlers lose their cool (as they do, sometimes several times a day), sometimes-physical restraint is entirely necessary.

And here lies the problem: the Royal Australasian College of Physicians is asking for legislation that they claim will give children the same protection from assault as others in the community.

To accuse those who smack their children of assault is insulting. The difference between hitting and smacking is stark.

Smacking is not assault. It is not the perfect punishment either, but some sanity is needed in the debate. Trying to label parents as abusive when they are generally trying to restrain a toddler who is out of control is plain offensive.
