Wills returns to work

Wills returns to work

Prince William’s paternity leave has come to an end as he returns to his role as a search and rescue helicopter pilot in the Royal Air Force.

Kate and two-week-old George have been left in good hands, staying on with Kate’s parents Michael and Carole Middleton at their home in Bucklebury.

A royal source close to the couple told People magazine that Kate, 31, intends to take her newborn prince to visit Wills on duty in North Wales within the next couple of weeks. The place holds fond memories for the royal couple as they spent their first year of marriage there.

In the meantime, with his current role set to expire, Wills is awaiting news from the palace regarding his next military deployment. They are expected to announce his new position as squadron leader or adjutant, both roles that would allow him more time with his wife and son.

But for now, it’s back to business as usual for Prince William.

“Like any new dad, William is finding it difficult to imagine going back to work and leaving the new baby at home,” a royal source said.

Back to work for William as paternity leave comes to an end

Back to work for William as paternity leave comes to an end

Prince William is heading back to work after taking two weeks paternity leave following the birth of his first son.

There were few things about the arrival and celebration of baby Prince George of Cambridge that gave him a start in life like any other newborn, and no doubt his upbringing will be vastly different from other kids.

But just like any other new dad in the UK, Prince William has had to return to work following the standard time of leave.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot has spent the past two weeks ensconced in his in-laws family home in Bucklebury, Berkshire, but is expected to return to duties in Anglesey, Wales.

William may have some adjusting to do in Anglesey, as he admitted to being in “baby mode” while playing a polo match for charity over the weekend and saying he had to pick up nappies on his way home.

The past two week have been “quiet, private time” for the new young royal family, with Kate and William “getting to know their son”, a Kensington Palace spokesperson said.

But he’ll be back on duty as a search and rescue pilot until he current tour comes to an end and may take on a new role within the RAF.

Is Ryan Gosling the new Batman?

Is Ryan Gosling the new Batman?

Since it was announced last month that the second movie of the Man Of Steel franchise will feature Batman, every comic book and movie fan has been wondering who will replace Christian Bale in the iconic role.

Even though the script is yet to be finished, six names are already said to be on the shortlist to star alongside Henry Cavill’s Superman.

Women everywhere will be thrilled to hear that Hollywood hunk Ryan Gosling is one of those names, with the Hollywood Reporter claiming that he’s one of the favourites.

But with studio bosses said to be looking for a “40-something-year-old” for the part, 32-year-old Ryan might find himself overlooked in favour of Josh Brolin, The Hobbit’s Richard Armitage and Max Martini from Pacific Rim, all men in their forties.

Also vying for the role is True Blood star Joe Manganiello, 36, who was originally considered for the lead in Man Of Steel, and Watchmen’s Matthew Goode, 35.

The movie, due in 2015, will see DC Comics’ biggest superheroes face off against each other for the first time on the big screen.

The daggy things I do for my kids

The daggy things I do for my kids

Associate editor Michael Sheather dressed as a robot, for his son.

The Weekly’s associate editor Michael Sheather spent his weekend pretending to be a robot because he wants to be involved in his children’s lives.

I love my kids a lot: I must, otherwise I’d never have dressed as a robot. That’s a sentence I never thought I’d ever write. But it’s also the truth.

I spent my Friday night in a tin shed at The Cataract Scout Park south of Campbelltown in NSW making a robot suit. That’s another sentence I never imagined writing. But it happened.

My usual Friday night involves whipping up something French and fabulous in the kitchen, and washing it down with a fine bottle of red wine, but that was never going to happen this weekend.

No, this was a weekend was something else.

In my other life away from the Weekly office, I’m a scout leader. I have three children and they are all involved in scouting, just as I was when I was kid growing up in country NSW.

As city kids, I wanted them to know what it’s like to be in the outdoors, to camp, to cook their own food on an open fire, to be resilient, to get dirty, to fall out of a tree, and not see their world only through a computer screen. Scouting lets them do all that. And occasionally, it also means they get to see their dad make a complete fool of himself.

Hence the robot suit. I was helping other leaders run an activity base at the NSW State rally, an annual event for more than 1000 scouts and several hundred leaders from all across the state. It’s a competition to find the best scout patrol and patrol leader in NSW. And an opportunity to see which scout leader can come up with the goofiest costume.

There were fairies, wizards, bumble bees, Mr Potato Head, Buzz Lightyear and a bunch of leaders from Caringbah decked out as the members of ABBA.

We designed and made our suits out of bits of air conditioning ducting, silver coated insulation sheets and silver tape. I’d never done that before, and to be honest I was surprised by my own ingenuity.

But not as surprised as my fourteen year old son Tom, who was mortified when he showed up at our activity with his friends to be confronted by his father dressed from head to toe in silver frosting.

He didn’t recognise me at first. Not until I waved. Then he looked a little closer and I saw his jaw drop. The he put his hands over his eyes and shook his head. I could almost hear him thinking ‘What has he done this time?’

He didn’t want to be photographed with me, but being a daggy dad is, of course, a time honoured tradition and something that should be recorded for posterity. It’s something he’ll remember for the rest of his life, I hope.

What’s the daggiest, silliest thing you’ve ever done for your kids? Send us a photo, tell us your story and we’ll publish the best online.

Prince William on nappy duty after polo match

Prince William on nappy duty after polo match

Prince William joked about nappy duties as he was presented with a mini polo mallet for his newborn son, Prince George, after a polo match in Ascot on Saturday.

Upon receiving the mini mallet, The Duke of Cambridge cheekily asked if it was a bag of nappies.

“I’ve got to pick some up on my way home”, he joked.

Prince William and his brother, Prince Harry played in a charity polo match to raise money for two charities, Skillforce and the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, on Ascot grounds over the weekend.

Fatherhood appears to be suiting William well, with this being the second occasion he’s made a cheeky remark; he first joked his son had a fuller head of hair than he did during the family’s first public appearance together at Lindo Wing on July 24th.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge officially registered the birth of their son on Friday, signing the birth register at Kensington Palace.

Harry pleased that “the pressure’s off” him now

Harry pleased that "the pressure's off" him now

As thrilled as Prince Harry is with his new nephew, he’s also happy that the arrival of Prince George has taken some of the pressure off him to have his own baby.

Speaking at the opening of a new Royal Navy base over the weekend, Harry told the crowds how pleased Prince Charles is with the new addition to the family.

“My father is over the moon to be a grandfather,” he said.

When one guest asked if he’s now rushing to have children of his own, he said that he doesn’t have to, now that Charles has his first grandchild.

“No, he’s got one [grandchild] now it will be fine. The pressure’s off now.”

The prince wore military uniform and his AAC beret to the opening, and was his usual cheeky self. When meeting with a group of dignitaries who had waited in windy weather to greet him, he quipped, “Typical British, we complain when it’s too hot and we complain when it’s too cold.”

And while he may not be rushing to have his own right away, Harry proved how good he is with children when one six-year-old gave him a drawing he had made. The picture showed the two of them on a naval ship, with the message, “Dear Harry, you’re fantastic,” to which the prince commented: “It looks like you’re driving!”

Prince Harry was then presented with a Commando dagger to cut the ribbon and open the centre and, joking about a possible re-deployment to Afghanistan, said he could use the knife to “fend off the Taliban for next time.”

Happy Harry’s baby plans

Happy Harry's baby plans

A source exclusive to Woman’s Day has painted a beautiful picture of the touching moment Prince Harry finally met his nephew.

With a beaming smile, he bowled up to Kate, who had baby George in her arms, and greeted the boy who has replaced him as third in line to the throne by saying,“Hello, little man! We’re going to get into a lot of trouble together!”

Harry handed over a small present that was revealed to be a baby blanket made from army camouflage fatigues, complete with Harry and William’s military service name tag “Wales” sewn into it.

“I had it made from one of my combat uniforms,” said Harry. “It’s so he knows he’s got an entire army to protect him his entire life – starting with me…”

Their precious 15-year-old daughter Rachel had been missing from their Melbourne home for nearly two weeks, and they had feared the worst.

But when detectives mentioned the name of their trusted family friend and babysitter, the Barbers allowed themselves a small sigh of relief.

“It gave us a glimmer of hope she was alive,” recalls Michael. “We thought that if she was with Caroline, then she would be OK, and maybe they had just run away or done something silly.”

What they were about to find out was that their 20-year-old family friend had brutally strangled their young daughter with a telephone cord and buried her in a shallow grave on her father’s farm…
