Victoria Beckham: Why I never smile

Victoria Beckham is known as one of the most beautiful celebrities on the planet but not for her smile. Now the famous fashionista has revealed why she refuses to turn her frown upside down.
Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham is known as one of the most beautiful celebrities on the planet — but not for her smile.

The former Spice girl, who is on her way to building a fashion empire, is famous for refusing to flash her pearly whites to the paparazzi, instead adopting a scowl celebrity watchers are all too familiar with. Recently Beckham let out a grin for the cameras. It made headlines.

Speaking with the New York Times T magazine, the famous fashionista has revealed why she refused to turn her frown upside down.

“I smile in family pictures,” she says.

“When you’re in a position to be paparazzi-ed just walking down the street you’d look a little daft if you were smiling all the time.”

Despite being conscious of appearing “daft”, the former pop star told the magazine she is relaxed about how she looks in pictures, saying she doesn’t like to hide her age and hates retouching.

“I don’t want to be made to look like I’m 25,” she said.

“I’m 39. I don’t have any issues with my age.

“I find it embarrassing when you don’t look like yourself, when you’ve had tons of retouching.

In the wide-ranging interview, spoke of life as a busy mother and becoming a business phenomenon in the fashion world.

“I am very career-minded,” she said, but made her priorities clear: “I am a working mum,” she said.

Yes, any insight into the behind-the-scenes life of Victoria Beckham makes for an interesting interview, but we know you really want to know about David.

Though the Beckhams, including three children Harper and her three brothers Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz, enjoy the services of a chef “a couple of days a week”, the kitchen is Dad’s domain.

“David does the cooking,” Victoria said.

“Yes, he’s really good,” she said, explaining that he picked up his skills while the family was living in LA, and he was playing soccer in Italy.

Alone on his days off, “he decided to go to culinary school,” she said.

Plus-size and androgynous models star in fashion campaign

Plus-size and androgynous models star in fashion campaign

Michelle Calderon and Casey Legler for Diesel.

In the age of the perky, perfect Victoria’s Secret model, women who look like Michelle Calderon and Casey Legler are virtually invisible in the fashion world.

But not anymore — denim brand Diesel has eschewed typical models in favour of Michelle, Casey and 18 other people of different shapes and sizes for its latest ad campaign.

The stars of the campaign all live in New York City, work in artistic fields and were discovered by Diesel’s new artistic director Nicola Formichetti on social networking Tumblr.

“I wanted to find people who reflected the diversity of the creative community today and not just the typical model,” Nicole told WWD.

“I wanted the campaign to showcase a variety of characters, people who are beautiful in their own unique way.”

The campaign’s stars include 22-year-old plus-sized, pink-haired graffiti artist Michelle, 15-year-old arts student Helen Primack and 23-year-old photographer Benjamin Ackermann.

Casey, a former Olympic swimmer who made headlines when she modelled male clothing, are appears.

“It was less about capturing fashion and more about getting an insight into these people’s souls,” Nicola said.

The images will appear in the September issue of the US edition of Vogue magazine.

Hunger can make you happy

While dieters grumble about being constantly hungry, new research has shown that being in a state of hunger can actually make you happy.

Grehlin is a hormone that our bodies produce when we are in need of more calories and creates that feeling of hunger we all know too well. Yet a study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience has found that hunger may in fact just be a side-effect of grehlin’s primary role in the body as a stress-buster.

Scientists believe that hunger-induced happiness has been an adaptive process from our cave-dwelling days, when our ancestors would have to be in a clear state of readiness and concentration to hunt for dinner, rather than becoming dinner for a predator. So while hunger is related to rising levels of grehlin, the hormone’s primary role in the body appears to be combating stress for survival.

Researchers manipulated levels of grehlin in mice, thought to be effective analogues for humans, and showed that mice with lower levels of the hormone were more susceptible to depression and inactivity, while those with higher levels were more energetic, eager and much more social. So as the grehlin levels rise, so does the hunger, but so do our moods, energy and levels of social interaction.

This could go some way to explaining the common problem of overeating during times of acute stress in humans. Hunger, which acts as a stressor causing the grehlin levels to rise in our bodies, is not the only trigger – social stressors can also cause a spike in this hormone. Where normally we would reach for a stress-busting snack, research shows that if we can avoid this, grehlin levels will remain high and help us deal with the stressor in a calm and effective way.

How not to lead men on in the workplace

Woman pulling man by his tie at desk

Trying to avoid unwanted male attention in the office? Imagining your grandmother is in the room during interaction with colleagues of the opposite sex is one way.

Not wearing anything revealing and learning to accept compliments “gracefully” are also said to work a charm.

Although sounding like this advice comes from some 1950’s etiquette manual, it’s from a major employee training service used by some of the world’s biggest online companies including Google and Groupon.

Jhana Education, which provides online workplace training to dozens of clients globally, published the out-dated advice in an article entitled “What if a male colleague gets the wrong idea?” (which has since be removed from its website).

Tips included avoiding showing skin, watching the tone of your voice and “dialling back” your flirtatious instincts.

“In a perfect world, women would feel free to dress however they want without being stigmatised for it,” the manual stated.

“Know that revealing clothing and certain verbal tics, such as ending statements with an upward inflection in your voice or struggling to accept a compliment, can affect others’ ability to take you seriously.

“If you’re touchy-feely or flirtatious by nature, you might want to dial it back around him and any guys from whom you sense discomfort.”

The guidelines also provided a handy hint for avoiding accidental flirting — imagine your grandmother is in the room.

“Don’t say or do anything you wouldn’t say or do in the presence of your grandmother. If you sense that you could start unconsciously flirting (you’re human, and sometimes it happens), imagine that your grandmother is in the room.

“If you’d feel embarrassed saying or doing whatever you’re about to say or do in front of Grandma, don’t go there.”

The “advice” was quickly picked up by feminist website Jezebel, which ran an editorial blasting its sexist overtones.

“The problem with the piece — besides the fact that it treats its target audience like actual sex idiots — is that it once again implies that women are responsible for how men behave and what men think,” Jezebel writer Erin Gloria Ryan wrote.

“Unsurprisingly, a male equivalent (How Not to Act All Skanky In Your Tie And Your Business Clothes) doesn’t seem to exist.

“Men are not coached on how to talk less like men from the TV. And men are not advised to keep their clavicles under wraps, lest their lady colleagues be driven mad with lust.”

Prince George’s nursery theme is totally wild!

Prince George's nursery theme is totally wild!

Prince William has revealed that he’s going to give his son’s nursery an adventurous theme inspired by African wildlife.

In the one-hour special, Prince William’s Passion: New Father, New Hope, scheduled to air in September, the new dad tells CNN of his exotic vision.

“I’ll have toy elephants and rhinos around the room,” Wills says. “We’ll cover it in, you know, lots of bushes and things like that. [We’ll] make him grow up as if he’s in the bush.”

Wills’ passion for Africa is well-known through his work as patron of wildlife conservation charity Tusk Trust.

Meanwhile, Kate began decor preparations of her own before George was even born. She was spotted several times out with her decorator browsing antique stores and fabric showrooms.

“[Kate] was very clear on the ambience she wanted to create,” Greg Kinsella, creative director of hand-printed fabric company Bernard Thorp told People. He added that Kate had a “wide canvas of interest”.

Wide enough to include a toy giraffe and a shrub or two? Hopefully!

Hugh Jackman

Just when you thought Hugh Jackman couldn’t get any more perfect, the muscle-bound hunk has donated $10,000 to help sick kids.

Hugh, 44, gave the sizeable sum to the Montreal Children’s Hospital after spending the past three months in the Canadian city filming the latest instalment of his X-Men film franchise.

Ever the humble gentleman, Hugh initially tried to keep his donation anonymous by asking wife Deborra-Lee Furness to do it online, but was forced to call the hospital after a website error.

“Deborra-Lee had tried to make the donation via her computer but the confirmation she got said that she had given $10 so she called us up,” hospital spokesperson Kim Fraser told the Montreal Gazette.

“She wanted to make the donation on behalf of her, her husband, and the cast and crew of X-Men.”

Hugh and Deborra-Lee raise two children together, Oscar and Ava.

Princess Beatrice leaves job to pursue party lifestyle

Princess Beatrice leaves job to party

Princess Beatrice

It’s no secret that Princess Beatrice likes to party, but it appears she quit her job in finance to spend more time having fun.

Though friends insist the 25-year-old royal is “already looking for another job” since recently leaving the firm she joined mid-2012, she has spent most of the summer holidaying by the beach with friends, escaping to Venice with her mother, and attending weddings and parties with her sister, Princess Eugenie.

The Daily Mail reports the Princess, who began work at an investment capital firm after completing her studies last year, has “quietly left” her job.

Friends say she is seeking employment and “would like to start somewhere new as soon as possible”.

There has been increased attention on the party princess, who had a big bash for her 25th birthday earlier this month as rumours swirled that an engagement to her long-time boyfriend David Clark, was imminent.

Beatrice, who is sixth in line to the throne, has always lived a “relatively normal” life as a young royal.

She is patron to two charities but rarely performs royal engagements solo.

But her recent departure from her finance job has prompted some royal watchers to consider whether Beatrice could ever become a full-time royal.

She lives in a flat in St James’s Palace in London with her younger sister Eugenie, close to Buckingham Palace and attached to Prince Charles’ residence, but neither Princesses have their own offices or staff.

Both Beatrice and Eugenie are regulars at royal celebrations, are keen to make a difference in the charities and causes they support, and are very close to their grandmother the Queen.

While Beatrice is said to be keen to get back into the workforce, royal news website Royal Central has suggest “there is a place for her on the royal circuit”.
