Prince William: ‘I’m so protective now that I’m a father’

Prince William: 'I'm so protective now that I'm a father'

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with their son Prince George.

Prince William has spoken about his passion for conservation, and how becoming a father has only strengthened that.

In his first interview as a father, to be aired in full this Sunday night in documentary Prince William’s Passion: New Hope, New Father, the Duke of Cambridge is brought close to tears speaking of his conservation heroes who battle poachers.

“I feel a real protective instinct, more so now that I am a father, which is why I get emotional,” he says.

“The last few weeks for me have been a very different emotional experience — something I never thought I would feel for myself.”

The new dad gave the interview only two weeks after becoming a father, but already he spoke of how his new role had affected him.

“I find, even though it’s only been a short period, a lot of things affect me now — when I see a clip like that there’s so much emotion and so much feeling wrapped up into conservation and environment. It’s so powerful.

“Suddenly you start thinking of like, wow, there is stuff you want to safeguard for the future. I’ve always believed it, but to actually really feel it as well, it’s coming through powerfully now as well.”

The Prince first visited Africa as a teenager and fell in love with it during his gap year, but he believes he inherited his passion for Africa from his mother Diana who was committed to her charity work in the region and he speaks of how she inspires him to continue the work he hopes his own son will be passionate about.

“Helping communities, and helping Africans, as she has done, and did with communities over in the UK, and around the world… it’s about helping the needy and the vulnerable.”

William jokes in the documentary that “the only legacy I want to pass on to [Prince George] is to sleep more and maybe not to have to change his nappy quite so many times”, but says that he hopes he will share his appreciation for conservation and the environment.

“As he gets older I’m sure he’ll pick up the bug of conservation.”

The Prince seems to be easing into his new role as a first time dad, but admits that he needs to take some time out to escape from the pressures that come with royal life.

So how does he relax? Daydreaming of Africa, of course.

“I do regularly daydream, and Africa is definitely one of the places I go to,” he says.

“I’ve got hundreds of animals on my iPhone, so if I’m having a stressful days, I’ll put a buffalo, a cricket or a newt on it and it takes me back instantly to the bush…. It completely settles me down.”

The documentary was made in partnership with the Tusk Trust, a conservation charity to which William is patron, and he and the Duchess of Cambridge will appear at the Tusk Conservation Awards later this week.

Naomi Watts’ personal trainer has revealed the gruelling three-month regime that transformed the actress into Princess Diana.

Fitness guru Simone De La Rue told Health & Fitness magazine the 44-year-old mother-of-two worked out for an hour a day, at least five times a week to get into shape for Diana.

Simone, who is Australian born and New York based, is famous for her dance-based workouts which are particularly popular with celebrities because they “are a fun way to get your sweat on and burn calories”.

“When working towards a specific goal with a client, I encourage them to train five or more times a week, for one hour a day,” Simone said.

“I set a programme that constantly challenges my clients and, during the last three weeks, we really increase the intensity.”

Naomi plays Diana in the film of the same name which focuses on the last two years of her life and her love affair with heart surgeon Dr Hasnat Khan.

The film will be released in Australian cinemas on October 10.

Toys ‘R’ Us to end gender marketing

Toys 'R' Us to end gender marketing

Parents have campaigned for toy stores to end gender marketing and 'let toys be toys'

An army of angry parents have forced toy store giant Toys ‘R’ Us to strip their aisles of sexist signage in a move to end gender marketing to children.

The UK arm of the global toy retailer has given in to the pressure of a grass roots campaign started by concerned parents, agreeing to freshen up in-store signage and to show boys and girls playing with the same toys.

The inclusive marketing strategy comes in response to the support of almost 8000 signatories who subscribed to the ‘Let Toys Be Boys’ online petition demanding toy retailers to “take down the signs, labels and categories that tell parents, grandparents and children that construction sets, adventure games, cars, science toys and superheroes are ‘toys for boys’, and that baby dolls, play kitchens, make-up sets, fashion, princesses and crafts are ‘toys for girls’.”

Toys ‘R’ Us Managing Director Roger McLaughlin said the retailers was happy to be working with the Let Toys Be Toys team, led by Megan Perryman, and that the chain store would “ensure we develop the best plan for our customers”.

The changes follow in the footsteps follow similar commitments from other major retailers who have agreed to banish gender signage from their aisles following intervention from the campaign.

But campaigner Megan Perryman says the industry still has a long way to go.

“Even in 2013, boys and girls are still growing up being told that certain toys are ‘for’ them, while others are not. This is not only confusing but extremely limiting, as it strongly shapes their ideas about who they are and who they can go on to become.”

Your say: Would you like to see toy stores take on the ‘let toys be toys’ initiative in Australia?

Prince William: I have a protective instinct now I’m a dad

Prince William: I have a protective instinct now I’m a father

In his first interview since the birth of his child, Prince William has spoken about his new-found protective instinct and the hope that his firstborn, George, will one day share his passion for wildlife conservation and Africa.

In a documentary to be aired on CNN worldwide on Sunday night titled Prince William’s Passion: New Father, New Hope, the Duke of Cambridge tears up when shown footage of a rhino being butchered by poachers, as he opens up about how fatherhood has changed him.

“I feel a real protective instinct, more so now that I am a father, which is why I get emotional,” he said.

“The last few weeks for me have been a very different emotional experience – something I never thought I would feel for myself.

“I find, even though it’s only been a short period, a lot of things affect me now – when I see a clip like that there’s so much emotion and so much feeling wrapped up into conservation and environment. It’s so powerful.”

The Duke of Cambridge has a deep connection to Africa that goes back to his childhood, and stems from his father’s conservation concerns and his mother’s humanitarian campaigns.

He hopes that one day his son will carry on the royal links to the country, but for now he just wants George to get a little more sleep.

“At the moment, the only legacy I want to pass on to him is to sleep more and [for me] maybe not to have to change his nappy quite so many times. But as he gets older I’m sure he’ll pick up the bug of conservation.”

In the documentary, William reflects on the deep peace he feels in Africa.

“For me, it’s a sense of freedom. I love the fact you can go into any village in Kenya or the east coast of Africa and just walk in and have a chat with someone and they have absolutely no idea who you are.

“Africa, emotionally and mentally, has affected me. It’s magical. Every time I go back it brings out new things.

“This is a lifelong commitment and I’ll always be involved – no matter what.” Part of William’s link to Africa is through the conservation charity Tusk, of which he is patron. Both he and wife Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, will attend an awards event for the charity in London on Thursday.

Loving husband buys wife 55,000 dresses in 56 years!

Loving husband buys wife 55,000 dresses in 56 years

Paul Brockmann’s wife Margot is arguably the luckiest woman in the world. Over the five decades of their marriage, her husband has given her a staggering 55,000 dresses!

In the ultimate romantic gesture, Paul, now 78, gave Margot, 76, a new dress every time the pair went ballroom dancing, leading him to buy dozens of gowns every week.

Fittingly, the pair met at a dance back in the 1950s, a day that Paul says “changed his life”.

“Margot is the love of my life and has remained so to this very day,” German-born Paul writes on his website, www.55thousanddresses.com. “I followed her to the United States and was disowned by my own family for doing so.”

“[Margot and I] went ballroom dancing every week, and I wanted her to have a different dress for every dance.”

“I loved seeing her dance and began collecting dresses for her. I would envisage Margot dancing in the dress, the look of it, the sound of it, and buy dress after dress for her to wear when we danced.”

“The collection grew as I searched far and wide at estate sales, department stores, yard sales and antique shows.”

Sometimes Paul brought home up to 30 dresses in one day. Price and size was no obstacle either.

“If there was a dress that I liked, I could visualise what she would look like in it,” he writes. “And I had to have it. Even if it was the wrong size.”

“You know, it’s a crazy idea, but I kept thinking maybe my wife [would grow] into them, whether losing weight or gaining.”

Even Margot struggled to keep up with her husband’s fascination with the gowns, many of which have never been worn.

Paul says he was never one to notice designer names but he’s now discovering he scored vintage treasures that date back to the 1940s from designers such as Oscar de La Renta and Vera Wang.

Sadly, after a bout of ill-health and increasing storage costs – the dresses take up six shipping containers – the pair has been forced to sell the collection via their website.

But diehard romantic Paul isn’t letting everything go.

“I do have some of my favourites that aren’t for sale,” he told Huffpost UK lifestyle.

“From the very first one I bought my wife, to the one that makes the perfect swoosh sound.”

Michale Bublé talks first time fatherhood

Michale Bublé talks first time fatherhood

For Michael Bublé, meeting his son for the first time wasn’t exactly what he expected.

The first-time dad, who welcomed Noah with his wife Luisana Lopilato on August 27, admits it took a while for the unconditional love for his son to sink in.

“I didn’t have that overwhelming feeling of love. I’m being honest with you,” he said on Canadian talk show The Social.

“I’d heard all of these stories about how this moment was life-changing, but it wasn’t like that for me. I was nervous for my wife, and I was happy that he was healthy … but, that day, it was like meeting a stranger.”

But a day later everything changed for the 38-year-old Canadian singer.

“That next night, it really clicked,” he said. “I was looking at him and all of a sudden, I got it.”

“It’s the greatest thing that could ever happen. You can’t explain it until it happens — it’s like telling somebody what water feels like before they’ve ever swam in it.”

From that moment on Michael has been unable to leave his child’s side and has become an expert at changing nappies, swaddling and lulling his son to sleep.

“I sing to him all day and all night. When he’s crying with somebody else and I hold him and I sing to him, he just stops. It’s really cool,” he said.

“The songs I’m singing are not my hits — that’s for sure. My number one go-to right now is Down by the Bay.”

Target launches Fifty Shades lingerie line

Target launches Fifty Shades lingerie line

Some sexy lingerie from Target's new Fifty Shades of Grey collection.

You’ve read the books, bought the soundtrack and fantasised about the movie — now you can buy the official Fifty Shades of Grey underwear.

E L James announced today that a lingerie line inspired by her erotic trilogy would be launched in Target Australia stores on September 26.

“I’m thrilled that Target will be the exclusive retailer of the official Fifty Shades of Grey lingerie collection in Australia, offering widespread access to the luxury collection,” James said.

“We’ve worked together to ensure the range encapsulates the passion of Anastasia and Christian’s love.

“The collection is styled on the elegant pieces Anastasia receives from Christian, lifting the Fifty Shades of Grey story off the pages and into the wardrobes of Australian women. The pieces tap into the fantasy world from the trilogy.”

The range features bustiers, balconette bras, suspenders, bikini briefs, g-strings and a sheer chemise in powder blue, oyster, black and red, all inspired by lingerie Christian gives to Anastasia in the books.

“The Fifty Shades of Grey collection delivers a high quality line of lingerie that reflects our affordable and accessible prices,” Target manager Sally Shing said.

“The brand is an enigma that continues to captivate women, and this collection channels ideas of romance into the evocative lingerie range.”

Prices will range from $15 for g-strings, $19 for briefs, $35 for bras, $35 for suspenders and $49 for bustiers and chemises.

Supermodels demand diversity on ‘racist’ runway

Supermodels demand diversity on 'racist' runway

Naomi Campbell on the catwalk at New York Fashion Week.

Supermodels Naomi Campbell and Iman are leading the charge to battle racism and promote diversity on the runway at New York Fashion Week.

As part of an advocacy group called “Diversity Coalition”, the models have named and shamed high profile designers who they say are sending a negative message by using a virtually all-white cast of models in their shows.

An open letter to governing bodies of fashion weeks across the world reads like a who’s who of the industry, where Campbell, Iman, and former model turned advocate Bethann Hardison call out Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Armani and other top designers for using “on or no models of colour” out of dozens in their most recent shows.

Campbell dazzled in Diane von Furstenberg’s fashion week finale, but the 43-year-old told GMA the DVF show was the exception to what the models are calling racism on the runway.

“It’s really shocking,” she said.

“Heartbreaking. Your body and beauty, it doesn’t matter what colour you are. If you’ve got the right talent, you should be there having the opportunity to do the job.”

Iman, the 58-year-old supermodel turned makeup mogul and wife of David Bowie, who is also demanding diversity on the runway, was outraged that not much has changed since she made it big in the 1970s.

“There were more black models working then than in 2013,” she said.

“There is a time when silence is not acceptable at all. And if the conversation cannot be had publicly in our industry, then inherently there is something wrong with the industry.”

Though they did not hesitate to name and shame offenders, the models wanted to clarify they did not consider the designers themselves racist, but that a culture of racism had become accepted in the fashion industry.

In Australia, members of the fashion industry are encouraged to adhere to the government’s voluntary code of conduct for body image which advocates diversity in the choice of models.

“When seeking to demonstrate good practice in diversity, organisations are encouraged to use a wide range of body shapes, sizes and ethnicities that are appropriate to the audience that a message or product is targeting,” the code of conduct reads.
