The PI saving lonely hearts from online scams

The PI saving lonely hearts from online scams

Private investigator Julia Robson.

Julia Robson spends her life trawling internet dating sites but she’s not looking for love — she’s a savvy private investigator making sure her clients’ Prince (or Princess) Charming are who they say they are.

It’s a field that didn’t exist a decade ago but Julia’s phone is ringing non-stop, with dozens of lonely hearts from around the world seeking to make sure they’re not falling victim to a scam.

“My friends spoke to me about their issues with online dating,” Julia tells me from her office in Melbourne. “A lot of profiles just didn’t check out: people didn’t look like their pictures, or didn’t have the dream job they claimed to.

“I saw a market for my investigative skills, I look at online profiles and using a international network of private investigators, I make sure they check out in real life.”

“People have an old-fashioned view of private investigators. You know, a trench coat and gumboots. It’s a lot more modern these days, I do work for clients all around the world, but can be based in Australia because it’s all online.”

Julia started her working life as a policewoman in New Zealand and now runs CupidScreen, her own online private eye business.

She says fake profiles are rife on many dating websites, with both individuals and companies blatantly lying to their users.

“Dating sites will use pictures of models as ‘real’ profile pictures in their advertising — so right from the start there are issues with honesty online,” Julia says.

“My work begins when someone wants the bona fides of a profile checked out: I make sure the person they’re chatting to is real: that they have the job they say they do, that they look the way they claim to, that they’re unmarried.”

Julia says there’s not much that surprises her about the lengths people will go to set up a scam, and urges caution whenever someone is thinking about the world of Internet dating.

“I’ve had men come to me, begging for help because they’ve posted nude pictures of themselves in compromising positions online, and it’s part of a scam.

“One client lost around a million dollars to a fraudster: someone who promised to mend their broken heart, but instead stole their money and has never been found again.”

Julia says everyone is vulnerable to online scams, but her most common clients are people who have been married for a long time, and then look online for love after their relationship breaks down.

“A number of my clients simply don’t realise that not everything they read online is real. Sadly for them, they’re at a point in their life where they’re emotionally vulnerable, and scammers tell them exactly what they want to hear.”

So how do you stay safe in the online dating world? Julia shares her top six tips:

    1. Don’t give too much away: Keep some of your identity private to protect yourself from scammers.
    1. Protect your children: Never post their names or photos.
    1. Search your potential date: Most of us have an “online footprint”. If their name doesn’t come up in a search engine, be concerned.
    1. Upload their photo to Google images: Scammers often use photos plucked from news websites or modelling agencies to lure you in. Searching their image makes sure you are chatting to a legitimate person.
    1. Don’t believe everything you read: In real life we use visual clues to work out whether someone is lying or not, so take everything you read with a grain of salt.
    1. Be cautious: If your online date doesn’t want to meet up with you in real life after a month, be wary. Similarly, if you have met up in person, but you haven’t met their family or friends — start wondering why.

Meet the Muslim Miss World

Meet the Muslim Miss World

The new Muslim Miss World Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola, 21, from Nigeria.

A 21-year-old woman from Nigeria has been crowned Muslim Miss World at the annual international pageant in Indonesia.

Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola fell to the floor sobbing when she was crowned the winner of the beauty contest in a glittering stage spectacle in Jakarta.

It is the third Muslim Miss World pageant and was held in Indonesia to protest against the traditional Miss World contest, which will take place in Bali later this month.

The pageant is held for Muslim women who are judged not only on their appearance (in modest Islamic dress) but also their piety, religious knowledge and understanding of the Koran.

Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola receives her crown.

More than 500 women entered the contest online and 20 finalists were selected to take part in the stage show.

The winner, Obabiyi, won a trip to Mecca.

The mainstream Miss World pageant in Bali has been besieged with protestors, who object to the contest being held in a Muslim country.

Organisers agreed to drop the bikini round in an attempt to appease the angry crowds but to no effect.

The September 28 final of the pageant has now been moved from Jakarta to Bali, a largely Hindu island, to reduce the risk of terrorist attacks.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s diva-like gym demands

Gwyneth Paltrow insists she’s not a diva but a list of requirements the A-list actress demands are met before she enters her exclusive gym indicates otherwise.

The 40-year-old actress is reportedly picky when it comes to her workout environment, demanding the entire shower be dried down before she washes off, and insisting on only drinking one brand of bottled water, which isn’t even stocked at her gym of choice.

An ‘insider’ revealed the exercise fanatic’s diva-like demands to Life & Style magazine, painting a picture of a very picky Paltrow.

“Before she showers, Gwyneth makes someone go into the stall and wipe the entire shower dry!” the source said.

“She refuses to touch what she called ‘somebody else’s shower water’.”

The gym Paltrow attends is reportedly stocked with a range of bottled water, but the available brands are apparently not good enough.

The star reportedly insists on sending “someone to the gas station to buy a couple of bottles of SmartWater” and made “such a fuss about it not being stocked”.

The actress, who was recently name the Most Beautiful Woman in the World by People magazine, takes her exercise very seriously.

She has previously revealed she spends two hours exercising every day after dropping her two children off at school

“I exercise from about 10am to 12pm,” she said.

Although she is a perfectionist when it comes to her fitness regime and onscreen performance, the actress insists she is low maintenance.

“Around the house, I’m in jeans and a T-shirt,” she said in an interview earlier this year.

“I don’t really wear make-up. That’s what [my family] are used to.”

Shane Warne reveals he hasn’t split from Liz Hurley but they have ‘relationship issues’

Shane Warne has rubbished reports that his relationship with actress Elizabeth Hurley is over, but the social media savvy couple's tweets all but confirm all is not well with their romance.

Shane Warne has rubbished reports that his relationship with actress Elizabeth Hurley is over, but the social media savvy couple’s tweets all but confirm all is not well with their romance.

Speculation over the cricket star’s relationship with Liz, 48, began when it was noticed when Twitter chat between the pair went through an uncharacteristic lull in the past three weeks.

Hurley was also spotted without her engagement ring, prompting a possible break-up to become front page news.

The actress, who became engaged to Warne, 44, almost two years ago broke her silence last night — fittingly, on Twitter.

“Apologies to loyal Twitter silence on recent events. Too raw & personal to share right now,” she said.

Thirty minutes later, Warne retaliated, echoing Hurley’s indication that all was not well, but rubbishing split rumours in the same tweet.

“Some of the reports re EH & me r absolute rubbish,” he said.

“Yes we’re sorting through some (private) issues. But we’re not throwing the towel in yet.”

The couple, who used Twitter to announce their previous relationship break-ups and their engagements, have so far received an outpouring of sympathy from their followers.

While the pair have made no further comments over whether they have parted ways, British paper The Sun says the romance is definitely over and cites Warne’s ex-wife Simone Callahan, with whom he has three children, as the cause.

“Liz found out he had been over at Simone’s house a lot,” a friend reportedly told the paper.

“It is felt now the kids are getting older, they need their dad around. Liz couldn’t ever handle Shane and Simone still being best friends.”

Warne further fuelled speculation over the split by cancelling a Cricket Victoria press conference, scheduled to take place yesterday, at the last minute.

William’s guard dogs put down days after he left military base

William's guard dogs put down days after he left military base

Prince William during a shift as a RAF Search and Rescue pilot on Anglesey.

Two military dogs that loyally protected the Duke of Cambridge throughout his active duty in the air force were put down only days after he completed his final shift.

According to the Ministry of Defence Belgian Shepard Brus and his colleague Blade, a German Shephard, were unable to be rehomed.

A spokesperson said the patrol dogs being put down after completing their royal duties was “entirely coincidental”.

“The department’s policy is to rehome all military working dogs at the end of their service wherever practicable.

“Regrettably, however, there are occasions when they have to be put down. This action is only ever taken as a last resort.”

One of the dogs was said to be at the end of his working life, while the other had “behavioural issues”.

The royal family have not commented on the fate of Prince William’s former canine companions, but it is well known Duke comes from a long line of animal lovers and has a passion for all living things.

William and Kate’s dog Lupo is considered part of the family, appearing in the first official family photographs alongside their son, Prince George.

The Prince also spoke recently of his love for animals and conservation in a documentary for African conservation charity Tusk Trust, to which he is patron.

Shane and Liz break their Twitter silence on split

Shane and Liz break their Twitter silence on split

Elizabeth Hurley and Shane Warne have put an end to their uncharacteristic Twitter silence, both giving insight into their recent relationship troubles.

The pair, who announced their engagement in 2011 via the popular social network and whose entire relationship has played out online, were rumoured to have split after becoming unusually quiet on Twitter, not mentioning each other for the past three weeks.

Liz, 48, was recently spotted out in London minus her large sapphire engagement ring.

She was the first to put an end to the Twitter silence between her and the cricket star. On Wednesday night she tweeted: “Apologies to loyal followers for Twitter silence on recent events. Too raw & personal to share right now.”

Shane followed with a tweet just 30 minutes later saying: “Some of the reports re EH & me r absolute rubbish. Yes we’re sorting through some (private) issues. But we’re not throwing the towel in yet.”

UK newspaper The Sun reported on Wednesday that Shane had been spending a lot of time at home in Melbourne with his ex-wife Simone Callahan, which Liz wasn’t too happy about.

“Liz found out he had been over at Simone’s house a lot,” an unnamed source told the paper.

“It is felt now the kids are getting older, they need their dad around. Liz couldn’t ever handle Shane and Simone still being best friends.”

In a final attempt to save his relationship, Shane has now flown to the UK to visit his fiance.

He left Australia on Thursday afternoon with his three children and wasn’t interested in talking about his rocky relationship when walking through Melbourne airport. But he did tell reporters: “We’re going to have a good time – we’re going to be away for ages”.

Liz and Shane became engaged in September 2011 after he ended his marriage to Simone in December 2010.

Kate met William “at least once” before uni

Kate met William “at least once” before uni

While most people believe Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, met Prince William at St Andrews University, it has been revealed the couple crossed paths at least once before.

Royal biographer Katie Nicholl has discovered the pair were introduced by mutual friends before they enrolled at the same university.

Nicholl discovered the meeting while researching her new book, Kate: The Future Queen.

“This was really fascinating for me,” she told US TV host Katie Couric in a recent interview.

“I was speaking to some of her friends at Marlborough College, which was where she went before St Andrews, and they said, “Uh uh, she didn’t meet him at St Andrews.

“She met him before she got there… through some of her friends. They knew Prince William and Prince Harry.”

The pair had a group of mutual high-society mates who introduced them in the summer of 1999.

“Now, I don’t know how many times they met, but I do know that Kate told at least one person, because I interviewed him,” Katie told Celebuzz.

The revelations are interesting considering Catherine had originally planned to attend Edinburgh University, but in an uncharacteristic move changed her plans. She rejected the offer from Edinburgh, took a gap year and reapplied to St Andrews.

“It was a big risk – applicants to St Andrews had shot up by nearly 50 per cent when the palace announced Prince William was going there,” Katie said.

But Catherine did secure a place and even shared some of the same classes as William.

It was Catherine’s famous appearance in the university fashion show that caught William’s eye and the rest is history!

Katie says the Catherine’s surprise decision to attend the same university as William makes her an “enigma” and a very interesting person.

“When you look at those two facts, in conjunction, you do think, ‘How much was pre-meditated?’ I believe the only person who really knows is Kate,” she said.
