Harry’s Aussie barmaid! It’s Cressida!

Harry's Aussie barmaid! It's Cressida!

She was ‘rubbish’ at pulling beers on her recent year in Oz, but she’s vowed to come back with Prince Harry.

Party boy Prince Harry had secret tips on where to sample Sydney’s hotspots while on leave from his navy gala duties last weekend – his girlfriend Cressida Bonas had all the inside info, having recently had a job pouring beer in one of the city’s pubs!

Before being chosen by the world’s most eligible bachelor in May last year, the pretty dancer was on a working holiday in Oz, living in a shared house in Bondi. “Her friend Princess Eugenie encouraged her to come here after regaling her with tales of her own holiday,” says a friend.

“Lots of the royals have a soft spot for Australia and Cress was looking for a break from uni, so backpacking for a year seemed like a great idea.”

Travelling with her best friend Georgia Forbes, the blonde beauties went door-to-door in 2011 asking for work in Sydney’s top restaurants and bars. “She may come from an affluent family, but Cress was paying her own way and asked for a lot of shifts at different places,” says the friend.

Princess Diana’s Aussie friend: “She’s been betrayed”

Princess Diana's Aussie friend: "She's been betrayed"

Princess Di’s Aussie friend Marie Sutton says Diana would be “disappointed” to see her celebrated life reduced to a widely ridiculed film, criticised by everyone from former lover Hasnat Khan to movie critics.

“I don’t think Naomi Watts will look back and see it as a wise decision to try to play such an iconic woman,” Marie says. “Diana was out there and strong – I don’t see those characteristics in Naomi.”

Charity fundraiser Marie became a confidante of Diana’s in the eight months leading up to her August 1996 divorce from Prince Charles. She spoke with her up to three times a week while helping to organise her last trip to Australia.

Today she says, “I truly think it’s impossible for anyone to play the part of Diana. She was one of those people who come along once in a lifetime.

Read more about Marie’s relationship with Diana in this week’s issue of Woman’s Day, on sale Monday, Ocotber 7, 2013.

Hamish and Zoë’s Orangutan Diary

Orangutan fan Zoe Foster-Blake took her hubby to Borneo to see her work. Here’s her travel diary.

Hamish and Zoë’s travel Diary

“As an ambassador for The Orangutan Project, a not-for-profit that focuses on the welfare of our endangered forest cousins and their rapidly diminishing habitat, I was thrilled to be invited to Borneo to see the great work they’re doing.

Hanging with the orangutans has been a dream of mine since I was a kid, and to have Hamish join me was a wonderful bonus – and not just because I needed a handsome assistant to carry my water!”

Bound for Borneo

“We set off to the Orangutan Rescue Centre in Ketapang, where 60 of our furry friends learn to climb and forage for food in the hope that one day they will be able to be released back into the wild.

As it’s not exactly tourist destination, this involved several flights, and a lot of moral-boosting junk food.”

The root of the issue

“Leif Cocks, President and Founder of TOP, took us to see the forests where we saw kilometre after kilometre of cleared land, with huge bulldozers snoozing nearby.

It was enormously disheartening, even more so when we learned that 300 football fields worth of forest is being cleared every single hour. This leaves orangutans with nowhere to live, either forcing them out into the villages where they are killed for stealing the local’s crops out of desperation, or destroyed/poached as the forest is bulldozed.”

Safety first

“Next stop was the Orangutan Rescue Centre, where we met with the executive director, Dr. Karmele Llano Sánchez, and given facemasks. This is not because we are Doctors, but because diseases are highly transmissible between humans and orangutans, and even a simple head cold can cause havoc.”

Orphans

“When they’re rescued, they are malnourished, and often suffering psychological problems and depression. We were taken down to ‘jungle school’ where the youngest orphans (re-)learn how to climb trees.

If you can imagine a small jungle gym in a shady pocket of forest and Hamish and I completely losing it over the sight of 10 tiny hairy little creatures playing and climbing, you’ve pretty much got the picture.”

Getting to know each other

“We noticed a pair of tiny, inseparable orangutans among the group. They didn’t relax their grip on each other for even a second and to say it was cute is like saying the sun is ‘a bit hot’.”

New friends

“We learned their names, Rocky and Rickina, and that when after being placed in the same enclosure their bond developed rapidly, to the extent where Rocky started mimicking Rickina’s habit of touching the machete scar on her head when she was scared or sad.”

Peas in a pod

“They completely stole our hearts, to the point where Hamish may have made one too many jokes about taking them home with us, because we were soon ushered on to the ‘grown up’ forest.”

Sponsor Rocky and Rickina and help get them back into the wild! Visit orangutan.org.au and click on Hamish and Zoë’s special appeal for Rocky and Rickina.

Into the wild

“We made a sweaty, stumbly minute walk into their dense forest until about 15 orangutans suddenly appeared, shaking the trees and making “threatening” kissing noises. Orangutans are far from aggressive animals, but these orphans have been carefully raised to view strange humans as a threat.

The centre houses around 60 orangutans, around 50 of which are ‘teens’ or young adults and works to rehabilitate them, medically and mentally, so they can eventually be released back into the wild.’

Rise & climb

“If you knew that each morning the infant orangutans were taken from their enclosure in a wheelbarrow to jungle school – where the youngest orphans are taught to climb trees – you’d make sure you were there bright and early to see it. Which is precisely what we forced everyone to do.”

little cuties!

“It was one million per cent worth it, seeing them all huddled together, huge eyes taking it all in, Rocky’s protective little hand reaching over to grab my arm and warn me to stay away from his woman.”

Off to school

“We watched the babies hop out and onto their jungle gym to begin climbing practice for the day. They are the cutest things we’ve ever seen – and if you’ve seen our cat, you know that’s a big call!”

On the river

“After lunch, Leif, Karmele, Hamish and I pile into what looks a like a toy boat and speed up a local river to the see where completely rehabilitated orangutans are released into the wild. Given there is a very real chance the species will be extinct in the wild within 10 years, release is a huge accomplishment and sense of joy for the rescue workers.”

Princess Mary’s lookalike sister-in-law Marie

There’s no one quite like Princess Mary – except her sister-in-law Princess Marie.

Marie, who is married to the younger brother of Mary’s husband Frederik, is a spitting image of our Mary, with similar hair, mannerisms, clothing and even name.

Their striking similarities have even led Danes to joke that Marie, who married into the royal family four years after Mary, is something of a “single white female”, in reference to the 1992 movie about a woman who makes herself over in her flatmate’s image.

These pictures show how alike the two Danish princesses are.

Spring clean your home loan and save

Don't just focus on the interior of your house, spruce up your mortgage repayments and save thousands of dollars in interest.
Green house and garden

Follow these six helpful tips and use the leftover cash to buy yourself that new outdoor setting.

Make extra repayments

While interest rates are low, consider increasing your monthly mortgage repayments so you can own your home sooner and reduce the interest you pay over the life of the loan. The monthly repayments on a $300,000 mortgage over a 25-year term at 5.0 per cent are around $1,753. By increasing your monthly repayments by $400 you could save $76,316 in interest and pay the loan off seven years and seven months earlier. Finding that extra money each month might not be easy, but it’s surprising how much people can reduce their incidental spending if they take a closer look at their household budget.

Pay fortnightly instead of monthly

On the same $300,000 mortgage, a person can cut three years and six months off the life of the loan and save $36,319 in interest, simply by swapping to fortnightly repayments. The loan is reduced faster as there are 26 fortnightly repayments each year, instead of 12 monthly repayments.

Make lump sum repayments

People can also attack their loan faster by making lump sum repayments whenever they can. Tax returns, work bonuses or inheritance money can all be ploughed straight into the mortgage to help reduce interest. On a $300,000 mortgage, one lump sum payment of $10,000, made five years into the loan, would save $16,342 in interest and reduce the term by one year and three months. While it’s tempting to spend cash windfalls, try to stay focused on the main prize — becoming debt-free sooner.

Keep savings in a mortgage-offset account

Since the global financial crisis, Australians have started saving again. While many people choose to park their cash in high interest online accounts or term deposits, a better option could be a 100 per cent mortgage-offset account. Any money in the offset account will be working to reduce interest and pay the loan off faster. Another advantage of mortgage-offset accounts is that the cash can be easily accessed if necessary.

Shop around

Home loan exit fees were abolished on all mortgages taken out from July 1, 2011, making it easier for consumers to shop around for a better deal. According to the Canstar home loan comparison website, the difference between the cheapest variable interest rate and the average is 1.43 per cent. Customers switching from the average to the cheapest rate could potentially save around $255 per month on a $300,000 mortgage. However, people need to be mindful that they will still be charged a discharge fee from their existing lender, plus application fees by their new lender.

Before making the switch, it’s important to consider whether these costs will outweigh the potential savings of a lower interest rate, and how long it will take to break even.

Prince Harry fever hits the harbour: Two women faint

Prince Harry fever hits the harbour: Two women faint

Prince Harry saluting troops at Sydney's International Fleet Review.

Prince Harry’s appearance at Garden Island this morning was too much for two Royal Australian Navy sea women, who fainted as the red-haired royal walked along the deck of a nearby ship.

To be fair to the swooning ladies, it was very hot in the sun and Harry was looking particularly dashing in his white dress uniform and blue beret.

After flying in to Sydney very late last night, the 29-year-old Prince arrived at Garden Island shortly before 10am this morning in a motorcade of white limousines, escorted by police motorcycles.

Members of the public who had turned out to watch the Prince’s arrival screamed and cheered as he exited his vehicle and stepped onto a specially erected podium to salute the assembled navy personnel.

He then boarded the HMAS Leeuwin and took a short tour around the ship with Prime Minister Tony Abbott before joining distinguished guests on the deck to mingle.

Governor-General Quentin Bryce arrived at Garden Island shortly afterwards, looking magnificent in spearmint green.

She walked up and down the ranks of servicemen and women before boarding the ship as the marching band played Waltzing Matilda.

The Leeuwin then pulled off into the harbour to commence a four-hour review of the fleet, which includes 37 war ships from around the world and 16 tall ships.

Harry disembarked the ship at around 2.30pm and changed from his uniform into a suit before heading to the Overseas Passenger Terminal where he conducted a rare “meet and greet” with members of the public.

Harry is believed to have specifically requested an opportunity to interact with the public and spent several minutes shaking hands and posing for photos with lucky passers-by.

The prince seemed much more relaxed during the “walkabout” than he was during the more official part of the program, smiling and laughing as he talked to ordinary people, making a lot of effort to talk to as many people as possible.

Harry was then whisked off to Kirribilli House in another boat to attend an afternoon reception hosted by Prime Minister Tony Abbott and attended by some of Sydney’s elite.

Harry’s next stop will be Perth, where he will have a short stopover before leaving Australia to fly to Dubai and then on to England.

It is the prince’s first official visit to Australia, although he spent some time here during his Gap year in 2003.
