Mahalia’s top 10 tips for successful weightloss

Mahalia’s top 10 tips for successful weightloss

She’s shed an incredible 30 kilos, now Mahalia Barnes is sharing her weight loss secrets with Woman’s Day.

1. Be honest

Be realistic about what you’re eating and your portion sizes. On weight watchers, I believe the tracking is the most important thing! It takes away any excuses and holds you accountable for your choices. The tracker is quick, simple and informative so that you can make the right choices and still enjoy food.

2. Eat more vegetables

I try to make sure that at least half of my plate at lunch and dinner time is taken up with salad or vegetables – spinach, tomato, steamed broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, baked pumpkin or fennel, eggplant, green beans, zucchini, cabbage, lettuces, and plenty more!

Then there’s others that are great for you but not high in points – beans, potatoes, corn, peas. There are so many choices of vegetables and they don’t need to be boring. Try out new recipes and keep it interesting!

3. Don’t be afraid of herbs, spices and sauces

Most are pretty low in points and make it easy to give full flavour to your recipes! But be aware of not using too much salt. I have tried to cut back on salt, sugar, oil and butter and use more fresh herbs, spices and stronger flavours to keep food interesting. We are so lucky in Australia to have access to so much great produce at the local supermarkets grocery stores or farmers markets.

4. Choose foods that will release energy slowly

Food like whole grains, nuts, pulses and seeds keep you full for longer and are so good for you. Try swapping white bread for wholegrain, white rice for brown, soba or ramen noodles, quinoa, lentils, chickpeas, beans etc. For example a cannelini bean mash with a little lemon as a great alternative to mashed potato with a roast.

5. Drink up!

Always drink a big glass of water before a meal. It really helps with your digestion and fills you up a little so you are less likely to over eat.

6. Dont be afraid to treat yourself.

There are plenty of treats that can satisfy you without being too high in points. There are healthy snacks you can always enjoy like frozen dates, pistachios, low fat yoghurt with honey…but I also enjoy SHARING more decadent desserts with my family or sometimes enjoying a quick treat like a chocolate paddle pop (3 pro points), a pine lime splice (2 pro points), a freddo frog (2 pro points) or a couple of biscuits with my tea after dinner (most biscuits are 2-3 points). Another delicious treat is a thick Italian hot chocolate type dessert called “Ciobar” which can be found in some supermarkets and delis – it’s quick and easy to make and only 2 to 3 pro points when made with skim or low fat milk!

7. Wear a pedometer

There are all sorts of great options available. Mine helps keep me motivated to move more. It’s the incidental exercise that really counts I think! It’s maintainable and realistic. We all need to walk more and I find that wearing the pedometer reminds me to do a few extra steps every day, and some days I really surprise myself with how much I’ve done without even realizing. Aim for 10,000 steps every day.

8. Really be aware of how much sleep you are getting

I really underestimated how important a good night’s sleep is when trying to lose weight. More often than not, the weeks that I had a gain or didn’t lose weight, I had also not had enough sleep. There are other variables, but sleep is a big one. When I am tired, it is harder to make the right food choices, I crave more sugar or quick fixes as opposed to healthier options and I am less likely to be active.

9. Seriously consider seafood

Seafood is probably one of my preferred meal options these days. Fish, prawns, oysters, crab, mussels…so many delicious choices! I still eat a balance of red meat, chicken and pork as well, but I definitely eat more seafood now and feel a lot better for it.

As an example, 6 grilled king prawns is only 2pp, whereas 150g of grilled scotch fillet is 9pp. A piece of grilled, baked or steamed fish can be done in so many different styles, but I particularly love a baked snapper fillet with soy, ginger, garlic and coriander. Fresh, light and healthy. Fish contains healthy oils that are great for your hair and skin too.

10. Always keep your goal in your sights.

It’s easy to become complacent or give in when you have a plateau or a gain, but keep at it. It is worth it! I cannot even begin to explain how much better my life is now. I feel fantastic. I think that for me, the new found energy and health benefits have been motivational throughout the whole journey, even when I have hit plateaus for weeks at a time.

There are all sorts of reasons for hitting a plateau, so try all different things to beat them. Vary your food choices, change your exercise… Keep it interesting for yourself and don’t become fixated on the exact same routine. Weight watchers is not a diet. It is a new lifestyle for me. I have made changes for good. If it takes a little longer than you expect, don’t lose sight of the fact that you are making your whole life better, so who cares if it takes longer…you are on a good path.

Aussie woman's Kenyan horror: 'I thought I would die'

Sarah Williamson was inches from death when terrorists stormed a Nairobi shopping centre.

With her eyes glued to a CCTV screen, Sarah Williamson’s heart was beating so hard she thought the killers prowling just metres away might be able to hear it.

In front of the Victoria University student, a tiny monitor showed six men shoulder to shoulder, machine guns aimed, making their way towards the tiny room in which she and her dad and other terrified shoppers sat huddled, hiding for their lives.

“I sat there and thought, ‘My God, they’re coming for us,’ Sarah tellsWoman’s Dayin an exclusive interview. “I was just terrified and thought I was going to die right there and then.”

Just hours earlier, Sarah, 24, her father Carl, a counter-terrorism officer, and his workmate Quinn, had gone to the high-end Westgate Mall in Nairobi to buy some curtains, use the complex’s wi-fi and get a new phone. Carl, 54, had moved to the Kenyan capital a month prior for work and he and Sarah had spent a blissful month of quality father-daughter time.

Princess Madeleine shocked by pregnancy

Pregnant Princess Madeleine and her husband Christopher O'Neill.

The announcement of Princess Madeleine of Sweden’s pregnancy came as a pleasant surprise to royal watchers, and now the 31-year-old royal has admitted even she was shocked.

Appearing on the cover of Sweden’s Elle magazine, the Swedish royal with model good looks says her pregnancy happened “a little fast and very suddenly”.

News that Madeleine and her British-American husband Chris O’Neill would be expanding their family came in early October, only three months after the couple’s lavish Stockholm nuptials.

The expecting mother told the magazine she and Chris are “very happy”.

According to Hello magazine, the 31-year-old third-in-line to the throne is brushing up on the bestselling pregnancy manual What to Expect When You’re Expecting, but did very little pre-pregnancy planning.

“It’s better that way than to plan everything in advance and find that nothing happens,” she says.

The royal couple, who were married in June, think it’s “very exciting” to be preparing for their first-born, Madeleine told Elle.

The Palace has announced Madeleine’s pregnancy would not affect her engagements and charity in the immediate future.

The Princess and her husband, who chose not to take a title after they wed, reside in New York where Christopher works as a financier, and plan to stay there for the foreseeable future.

Madeleine has not ruled out “the possibility of moving to Sweden in due course.”

Demi and Ashton are officially over – Finally!

Demi and Ashton finalise divorce after two years!

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher have officially ended their relationship by getting a divorce – two years after they broke up!

“Ashton and Demi have finally signed their divorce agreement,” a source close to the pair told the New York Post.

“They are about to file paperwork with the court that will formally end their marriage.”

The hold-up with their settlement was caused by Demi seeking financial spousal support due to Ashton’s cheating, which ended the pair’s relationship back in 2011.

But TMZ reports she eventually dropped that claim.

The pair, who were married for six years, reportedly did not have a pre-nuptial agreement that evenly divided their assets.

To reach the agreement, sources say Ashton was “a little more generous than he had to be”.

The former couple are reportedly filing the final papers next week and the divorce is “acceptable to all sides”, the New York Post reports.

Ashton, who is currently dating actress Mila Kunis, is TV’s highest-paid actor. His starring role in sitcom Two And A Half Men netted him a reported $25m between May 2011 and May 2012. He’s said to be worth between $148m and $170m, thanks to that role and his technology company investments.

Demi, on the other hand, is estimated to be worth around $160m. She scored her last big pay cheque a decade ago when she netted $2m for her role in 2003’s Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.

Jessica Simpson Doesn’t Want Her Daughter To Diet

Jessica Simpson Doesn’t Want Her Daughter To Diet

Jessica Simpson says having her two children has “changed my perspective completely” about what matters in life, especially when it comes to worrying about weight.

The star, who is mother to 17-month-old daughter Maxwell Drew and four-month-old son Ace, says her kids have helped her to re-evaluate and go easy on herself.

“My pregnancies (especially my first with Maxwell) were well documented and my struggles with my weight and body image have played out in front of the world,” she wrote in a blog post for Parents.com.

“As hard as that has been, the hardest part is to realise that with all the hurtful and harsh criticism from others, I have been the hardest on myself.”

Jessica famously became a Weight Watchers spokesman following the birth of her first child, signing a $3 million deal with the weight-loss company.

The 33-year-old now says doesn’t want her children to see her worry too much about her weight.

“Raising Maxwell makes me realise that I don’t want her to see me beat myself up for things like food choices or numbers on a scale,” she said.

“Those things don’t determine who we are and instead make us feel terrible about ourselves … I want her to know her value, rather than spending her energy fighting negative voices from within.”

Jessica, who is currently planning her wedding to fiance Eric Johnson, says she is finally at peace with herself.

“Becoming a mum has helped me realise I’m actually proud of myself for a lot of the things I have done in my life,” she said. “Having my kids has made me feel so much more at peace with myself.”

Bridget Jones sequel in jeopardy

Bridget Jones sequel in jeopardy

The long-awaited Bridget Jones’s Diary sequel could be in doubt because author Helen Fielding and actress Renee Zellweger don’t see eye to eye.

The third instalment, Mad About The Boy, has now been written into two scripts, one starring Renee, who played lead character Bridget in the first two movies, and one that doesn’t.

In the latest book, Helen is quick to thank actors Hugh Grant and Colin Firth, who both starred in the 2001 film and the 2004 sequel, but she fails to mention lead actress Renee.

“They didn’t really stay in touch after the last film, though Hugh, Colin and Helen all did and have a great working relationship. Everyone expected Helen to thank Renee but it wouldn’t have been sincere because they aren’t good friends,” a source told the UK Mirror.

“The main problem was that Helen, understandably, was very protective over the screenplay and how she saw the role of Bridget being played.

“But Renee had her own very definite views. There was simply a clash of working personalities.”

The new novel sees Bridget, a 51-year-old widower with two young children, date a toy boy before finding love with a teacher at her son’s school.

Although the new book is already a bestseller, the chance of it becoming a Hollywood film is in doubt.

Producers in LA are yet to snap up the rights to the novel, but have been working with Helen on writing an independent script called Bridget Jones’s Baby.

The production has hit a number of roadblocks along the way, including the killing off of Mark Darcy, who was played by Colin.

“You might be seeing Bridget Jones’s granddaughter’s story being told by the time we get there!” Colin said of the problems attached to producing the film.
