The truth revealed: Katie’s fury over Tom’s confession

The truth revealed: Katie's fury over Tom's confession

Tom’s court case to prove he’s a good dad backfires as Katie fumes at the invasion of Suri’s privacy and her own.

It has been the most talked about divorce in Hollywood history, plastered across the covers of magazines and newspapers the world over.

But ever since the bombshell announcement that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were splitting first hit the headlines in June last year, both sides have remained steadfastly tight-lipped and done everything they could to keep their bitter battle private. Until now, that is.

In court submissions last week, Tom Cruise, 51, revealed a raft of secrets about his relationship with Katie, 34, and their daughter Suri, 7.

During a sworn deposition, Tom denied that Suri had needed to be saved from Scientology – the controversial cult that he has built his life around – disputing a reportedly major reason that Katie chose to divorce him in the first place.

Aussie weight loss: “I didn’t need surgery, just love!”

Aussie weight loss: "I didn't need surgery, just love!"

Afraid of losing his lady, big bloke Jason Jennings devised a DIY diet that saw him drop a life-saving 123kg!

Jason Jennings knew he had to take radical action if he wanted to live happily ever after with his fiancee Rachel Boneham. At a morbidly obese 223kg – too big for plane and theatre seats – the 38-year-old Canberran was on the way to eating himself to death.

So with Rachel’s support, he opted for gastric sleeve surgery, hoping it would “fix all my problems”. But three days before he was due to go under the knife, Jason had an epiphany when he saw he had lost more than 16kg in three weeks just by following the required pre-op diet.

“It made me reconsider,” he says. “Had I really tried to lose weight before? Was having 80 per cent of my stomach removed really for me?”

Jason cancelled the gastric surgery, resolving to take control of his life and appetite. “I decided to educate myself on calories, carbs, fats, proteins, and working out and keeping active,” he explains.

“I’m at the point now where I don’t know if, for the whole year and a half we were together, she was just a really good actor, or she has now totally lost the plot,” she reveals exclusively to Woman’s Day.

“To me, that’s a sham. Yeah, fair enough, after being on Big Brother you are a D-list celebrity and you have to ride it while you can because it’s very short-lived, but when is it enough? It’s ridiculous…”

Adele to L’Oreal: Keep your $20m

Being a brand ambassador is these days part and parcel of being an A-list celebrity.

But British chanteuse Adele has decided she can do without the record-breaking $20m that French cosmetics brand L’Oreal was going to pay her to be their new “face”.

Prince William channels Diana witnessing live operation

Just as Princess Diana did more than 17 year ago, the Duke of Cambridge donned medical scrubs and witnessed a live operation looking every inch his mother’s son.

The compassionate Prince observed a breast reconstruction operation and the removal of a bladder tumour at the Royal Marsden Hospital in West London.

Looking through a microscope as he was talked through the breast reconstruction procedure, which takes six to eight hours to complete, the Duke remarked: “that’s amazing”.

“Is this fairly major surgery?” he asked the lead surgeon, Mr Stuart James.

“Think of it as long rather than major.”

The Duke moved on to witness his second surgery procedure viewing a tumour being removed from the bladder of a male patient in his 80s.

He described the experience as “surreal” and hailed the “incredible” work of the hospital’s surgical teams.

William’s hospital visit echoed Princess Diana’s experience at Harefield Hospital in Middlesex, where she watched a heart operation being performed on a small boy from Cameroon in 1997.

Diana was president of the hospital trust from 1989 until her death in 1997. The role was taken over by William in 2007.

One surgeons at the hospital, Pardeep Kumar, praised William’s understanding of the work done at Royal Marsden.

“He really had an insight into the kind of work we do. He really understood. The questions he asked were really on the money and were very insightful,” Mr Kumar said.

“For want of a better word, he did enjoy himself.”

Karl Lagerfeld speaks out against Photoshop

During an interview with actress and friend Jessica Chastain at the Lincoln Centre in New York City, the 80-year-old designer said he thought models often looked lifeless once they had been airbrushed.

“We are easily in a period of over-retouching,” he said.

“Some models end up looking as if they are coming out of a funeral parlous, all life taken out of the face.

“I hate that.”

The Chanel designer, who has relied on sketches while building his creations for his entire career, also lamented the industry’s use of technology during the design process as well as in photographs.

“Lots of designers these days don’t sketch anymore,” he said.

“They have studios or do it with a computer. I do everything myself because I like physically the work of sketching.”

The price of genius: TV wunderkind’s bipolar battle

Like many people living with bipolar disorder, TV wunderkind Adam Boland has enjoyed the invincible highs that can propel him into brilliance.

“When you’re on a high, you feel like you can do anything,” he has said.

And he is acclaimed for his extraordinary producing talents, driving Channel Seven’s Sunrise program into the number one spot for breakfast TV after two decades of dominance by Channel Nine’s rival Today show.

But the flipside of the highs, of course, are the debilitating lows.

Our condolences go out to Mr Boland, who this week went on indefinite leave for mental health reasons from his job as head of morning TV at Channel Ten just days after new shows Wake Up and Studio Ten launched to disappointing ratings.

He had also recently come out of a five-year relationship.

When the pendulum swings, bipolar disorder can drag normally active and outgoing people into the depths of paralysing depression.

Just ask people like British actor and writer Stephen Fry, rugby league legend Andrew Johns, Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, media mogul Ted Turner, British comedian Russell Brand and former NSW Treasurer Michael Costa.

Although bipolar disorder can affect anyone, it has been suggested that it may be even more prevalent among highly successful people, such as sports stars, actors and leaders.

This may be partly because people with bipolar can be very driven, with heightened productivity, creativity and sensory perceptions during manic or hypomanic episodes.

When Andrew Johns went public with his condition, for example, he described having better reflexes and seeing gaps in the field that he would not be able to see in his normal state.

Bipolar can be managed with medication but is a lifelong condition. Stressful life events may contribute to depressive episodes.

Our thoughts are with Mr Boland.

I lied to steal my best friend’s man

I lied to steal my best friend’s man

Image: Thinkstock, posed by models

We were in our final year of high school, and my beautiful, highly intelligent and talented best friend, Fiona, had met the man of her dreams. She was over the moon in love with him and I could understand why. He was caring and thoughtful, tall and good-looking. He was serious eye candy and I found myself blushing in his company and often had impure thoughts about him.

Fiona and I were both equally ambitious to go to university the next year.

For the past six years we’d been inseparable, spending every weekend camped out at each other’s houses. We’d had our fair share of boyfriends along the way, but always remained true to one another in the name of female solidarity.

But I knew Ryan was different. He wasn’t just a distraction for Fiona, he was the one. We had our final exams to study for and they paced their time together, kindly including me on outings as often as they could.

When Ryan’s parents invited Fiona to dinner to meet the girl of his dreams, I was invited along as well. They all seemed to adore her and when Ryan’s father confided in me that “she was the girl he would marry”, I felt the first twinge of jealousy set in.

I had never before felt jealous of her, because I loved her unconditionally as my best friend. While she was a natural blonde with bright blue eyes, I was confident with my smattering of freckles and hazel eyes. I felt we were both pretty in our respective ways.

Our school year ended on a high note, with both of us doing very well academically. Fiona was dux and we all went out to celebrate. Ryan was so proud of her and gave her an amazing commitment ring. I was green with envy.

When the university offers came in, Fiona was offered a full scholarship to study medicine at Otago University in Dunedin, New Zealand. I did not get into the medical course I’d applied for, but was accepted for a BSC degree at Sydney University in our home town. At first I was sad that we’d be separated, but then I remembered how envious I had been feeling lately. I reasoned some distance between us might be a good thing.

Ryan was inconsolable when he found out about her offer, as he’d just accepted a new job in Sydney and this was to be the start of a rewarding career for him. They spent every living moment together leading up to her departure for university. I was left out of their plans. I felt sorry for myself and missed my best friend.

The time soon arrived for Fiona to move countries and leave Ryan and me behind. Ryan was as lost as I felt and he started to spend more and more time with me and my family.

I saw this as my opportunity and turned on all the charm. I was always so grateful to see him, chatting about Fiona and filling him in on her university gossip. One day I hinted that she’d met a fellow student she was pretty interested in.

This broke Ryan’s heart, but I had no conscience. I knew that I wanted him for myself. I was prepared to go to battle and lose Fiona’s friendship for him.

They exchanged a few heated emails, with Ryan accusing her of cheating on him. She invited him to come over so they could sort out this misunderstanding.

He asked me for advice and I lied blatantly, telling him Fiona had treated all her past boyfriends this way. He believed me, as he reasoned I knew her best, and broke it off with her. I could tell her world had crumbled. She called me to chat and Ryan answered the phone. He was firm when he told her that it was really over between them and revealed that he was interested in me now. At last, I was victorious!

I cut all ties completely with Fiona, changed my mobile number, moved in with Ryan and warned my family that I wanted nothing more to do with Fiona.

A couple of years later we got married and Ryan supported me through university. Over the years we had two children who both look so much like him.

A year ago Ryan was offered a career change with a move to Auckland, and I instantly thought of Fiona. It had been 12 years since we had seen her. We discussed it and both felt that if she were still living in New Zealand, we would have no problem seeing her again.

I found her email address and we began to chat. She was now a successful doctor practising in Auckland and was very happy to make contact with me again. Ryan and I decided to invite her over to meet our children.

When she walked in the door, she lit up the room with her beauty, grace and wonderful energy and I remembered just how much I missed her.

She looked amazing, toned and tanned, having just returned to NZ after a summer break in Europe, water-skiing and sailing in the Mediterranean. She’d done very well financially, far better than we had, and owned a lovely heritage home on the shore.

Next to her, with the rush of life and the exhaustion of motherhood, I felt like a wilted flower. I was envious of her lifestyle – she was planning a winter break to ski in the Alps. I realised that I’d missed out on her company all those years and could see how much Fiona lived, played and worked with vitality. I was envious and impressed at the same time.

Our children instantly fell in love with her too. Our young daughter asked her, “Why don’t you have children of your own? You would be a fantastic mum.”

To which Fiona replied, “I’ve not met the man to spend the rest of my life with yet.”

I looked up at Ryan then, and saw his eyes soften. I can’t help feeling responsible for destroying their hopes of a life together.

I really hope they never find out how I lied.
