Having cancer helped me find my own path

Cancer helped me find my own path

Jennifer McNamara was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer on the 8th of March 2005.

“I don’t think anyone ever forgets the date that they were diagnosed,” she recounts. “It was three days before my mother’s birthday and when I turned up, wanting to tell her in person, she knew something was wrong.”

After a second opinion re-evaluated her initial prognosis of a possible mastectomy back to a lumpectomy, Jennifer began her course of treatment which involved six rounds of chemotherapy, followed by six weeks of radiation and six months of Herceptin.

“I was working full time in government in a marketing role, was really stressed and not enjoying it. I didn’t have a passion for what I was doing anymore. I wanted a change, but felt I was on this merry-go-round. I didn’t know how to get off. Then suddenly I was flung off.”

Jennifer’s surgery was successful and the subsequent treatments cleared her of cancer, but the entire experience was a life-altering one for her.

“It makes you slow down. You get very patient when you become a patient, because you’re sitting in hospitals just waiting for your turn. You’re having blood tests, you wait for your chemo, and you just have to wait. It takes time. You just have to learn to accept that this is your focus at the moment, this is what’s important. So it was like a gift.”

This gift of perspective and the chance of being cured, gave Jennifer the opportunity to begin her life anew.

She got back into art and eventually, she opened up an art school called Art Est. in Leichhardt, Sydney. Here Jennifer runs art workshops for kids and adults as well as other survivors of cancer and people who are going through their own journeys.

“Different people have different things going on in their lives, whether its cancer or some other illness, like mental illness, or just stress in their family, or they are seeking a work life balance. So that’s why art has become really important. For me it was my catalyst” says Jennifer.

She treated her year of recovery as a year of discovery and has decided not to return to the corporate world, instead focusing on her passion for art and for inspiring others to follow their passion.

Jennifer has this advice for anyone going through a similar experience, “Find your own path. Explore the opportunities that are presented to you. You don’t know how you’ll respond until you’re actually experiencing it.”

She reveals, “It’s like you’ve been let in on this secret – you actually can change your life. It gives you the courage to try new things and to take those big leaps of faith, do things you haven’t done or haven’t had the courage to do before.”

“It does give you that second chance at life. I know it sounds cliché but it really does.”

With the help of donations, the newly opened Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in Sydney’s Camperdown aims to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families by bringing together all the elements of cancer research, medical treatment and complementary therapies including art classes, all under the one roof.

Anti-bingeing bra stops women overeating

Sensing stress levels, skin temperature, and changes in heart rate, the prototype bra monitors apparent precursors to overeating and notifies its wearer of these habitual snacking triggers via a smartphone app, the Daily Mail reports.

Researcher Mary Czerwinski says by alerting the wearer to their habits, the device urges women to change their ways.

“The rationale for the criticality of monitoring is that it helps patients to be more aware of what is happening in the moment,” she writes in her paper Food and Mood: Just-in-Time Support for Emotional Eating.

“They can begin to make changes to behaviour that may have seemed automatic or beyond their control.”

Powered by a battery and featuring sensors in the bra’s cup pockets, the garment senses changes in its wearer’s mood and streams data to be viewed on the accompanying smartphone app.

Tested by volunteers over a four-day period, the product’s developers said the pilot results were “quite promising”.

“Using log files, we were able to detect around at 75 per cent and [emotions] at 72.62 per cent,” they wrote.

The one setback of the battery-operated sensing system that volunteers reported was that it needed to be recharged every three to four hours, making the process.

The company is also reportedly looking to develop bracelets with similar functionality so that men too can monitor their overeating warning signs.

William and Kate as you’ve never seen them before

The royal couple are the stars of this week’s issue of Bloomberg Businessweek to illustrate the expansion of US clothing brand J. Crew.

The label is a favourite Kate’s – it’s where she buys most of her jeans – and has just launched in the UK with great success.

The cover sees William and Kate dancing around “wearing” the retailer’s clothing alongside the headline: “J.Crew – Teaching the world to dress American.”

We’re sure the royal family wouldn’t be too happy with the image, but we just love it.

Photoshop fail: When airbrushed ads go too far

Lady Gaga

Only weeks after publicly criticising a magazine for overdoing it with Photoshop on her cover image, Lady Gaga is lauding overly airbrushed shots of her in starring in the latest Versace campaign.

With skin smoothed over to resemble plastic and not a line in sight, the retouchers have clearly gone to town on this campaign, and though Gaga doesn’t mind – she said she “adores” the shoot – some are labelling her a hypocrite for endorsing the overly airbrushed images.

These pictures of Lady Gaga aren’t the first to cause upset in the advertising world.

Lengthening eyelashes in mascara ads and smoothing over wrinkles in anti-aging cream endorsements has seen ads banned and the celebrities they star very upset.

Lady Gaga said on Twitter that she adored the shots, but recently slammed a magazine for airbrushing her image.

This illustration, part of a Roberto Cavalli campaign, stripped Beyonce of her famous curves.

Beyonce’s curves were also smoothed over in this H&M campaign. She was outraged.

This Lancome ad featuring a Photoshopped Julia Roberts was banned for being misleading.

Jennifer Lawrence said she was thankful for Photoshop and loved these overly airbrushed images in her Dior campaign.

Taylor Swift’s eyelashes were enhanced in this Covergirl ad, and also caused it to be pulled.

We don’t think Christy Turlington needs airbrushing but this campaign certainly did.

This ad featuring Rachel Weisz was banned in the UK for “misleadingly exaggerating” the effects of the product by altering her skin.

An ad for Dior mascara featuring Natalie Portman and “digitally lengthened” lashes was banned.

After pressure from an advertising regulatory body that claimed Maybelline went overboard with Photoshop, this ad was “permanently discontinued”.

Cosmetic brand Make Up For Ever championed this Photoshop-free campaign.

Shockingly inappropriate retro children’s ads

Paedophilic retro childrens ad

Women go gaga over the smell of a newborn baby but in the 1970s, a cosmetics company wanted people to believe the scent made men crazy too – for an entirely different reason.

This ad for Baby Soft body mist insists “innocence is sexier than you think” – creepy. But it’s not the only retro ad that would raise eyebrows today.

Baby teething? Give it cocaine. What’s the one thing no toddler can be without? A gun. What’s twice as good as twins? Twins wrapped in cellophane.

Here are some of the most egregious retro children’s ads.

This 1970s fragrance ad would not be allowed today.

If they think this girl is ‘chubby’, 1970s ad execs would be horrified by kids today.

What’s better than twins? Twins wrapped in cellophane or course!

It’s never to early to start shaving, according to Gillette.

‘Papa says it won’t hurt us’.

Teething child? There was only one logical answer in 1914: cocaine.

Worried your baby isn’t getting enough harmful UV light?

Babies selling cigarettes.

This cough syrup from 1841 contained opium.

Want your kid to live for 100 years? In the 1940s that meant cigarettes and lots of them.

Don’t know what to feed your newborn? 1941 says sugar!

How can you stop your baby crying? Cigarettes of course!

‘TV can improve marks!’ Today’s kids would probably appeciate this ad campaign.

Forget nappies – just wrap your baby’s bum in plastic.

Cigarettes – something high on every 1940s child’s Christmas list.

What’s better than breast milk? Milk out of a can of course!

Today beer is for adults only. In 1907 it was the perfect drink for young and old.

How do you dress a ‘chubby’ child? In chubby-size clothes of course!

Want a cigarette that is gentle like a baby?

Nigella Lawson breaks her silence after drug accusations

Nigella Lawson has broken her silence after her ex-husband sensationally accused her of drug abuse.
Nigella Lawson

Nigella tweeted a link to a festive recipe, thanking her 480,000 followers their support and encouraging them to use the hashtag #teamNigella.

“Holiday Hotcake: the perfect recipe to show thanks for all your support and to those who hashtag #teamNigella,” she wrote.

Within minutes, hundreds of fans had responded to the message, tweeting their support for the celebrity cook.

“You’re brilliant,” one wrote, while another added, “Go girl! You can’t keep a hot cake down!”

Nigella’s reputation was rocked this week when her ex-husband told a London court she “took cocaine, cannabis and prescription drugs” daily during their 10-year marriage.

Charles Saatchi revealed Nigella’s “guilty secret” in a letter to Isleworth Crown Court during a fraud hearing against two of the celebrity chef’s former assistants.

Dubbing his former wife “Hi-gella”, Saatchi said Nigella was so “off her head” on drugs, she let former assistants Francesca and Elisabetta Grillo spend more than $500,000 on taxis, flights and designer clothes.

“I am concerned that Miss Lawson gave the defendants permission to use the accounts for personal purposes whilst under the influence of drugs and/or that Miss Lawson has no credible recollection of events as a result of drug abuse.”

The Grillo sisters supported Saatchi’s allegations, telling the court Nigella allowed them to spend whatever they wanted on her corporate credit card in exchange for keeping their silence about her drug habit.

Saatchi and Nigella had been due to testify together but he sent her an email on October 10 to say that he had changed sides after the former assistants sent him written statements detailing their version of events, including explosive claims Nigella had been giving drugs to her 19-year-old daughter Cosima, known as Mimi.

“They will get off on the basis that you and Mimi were so off your heads on drugs you allowed the sisters to spend whatever they liked,” Saatchi’s email to Nigella read.

The Grillos full statements – in which they make numerous drug allegations against Nigella, which Saatchi says he “believed every word” – have not been read out in court.

Judge Robin Johnson will now rule on whether the fraud trial should be abandoned. If it goes ahead, Nigella will be questioned in court about her alleged drug problems.

Nigella hired Elisabetta Grillo, 41, in 1999 to help care for her daughter Cosima and son Bruno. Her sister Francesca, 35, was hired in 2003.

Both were sacked in July last year when Saatchi discovered massive their massive expenditure on Nigella’s credit card.

Initially, the sisters made no mention of the drugs claims but changed their story in October, making an official statement via their lawyers.

The sensational drugs claims were first raised in a hearing earlier this month but the judge ruled them inadmissible and banned reporting of them.

After Saatchi came forward to say he believed the claims, the judge ruled they were admissible and could be revealed.

The Grillos lawyers have strongly denied claims they approached Saatchi’s legal team to ask if the charges could be dropped if they made drugs allegations against Nigella.
