Mary Coustas welcomes beautiful baby girl!

Mary Coustas welcomes beautiful baby girl!

Mary Coustas and her husband George Betsis shared their exciting baby news with Woman's Day last month.

After an incredibly emotional decade long battle to have a child, Australian actress Mary Coustas has welcomed a beautiful baby!

The 49-year-old and her husband George Betsis welcomed their long-awaited, “very cute” baby girl on Monday, and they clearly couldn’t be happier.

“We’re so very happy to announce the arrival of our much anticipated baby girl,” the excited pair told Woman’s Day via a representative.

“Baby and mother are in exceptional health, father still doing cartwheels.”

“Thank you for all your messages of support and love throughout this journey.”

Mary and George’s tough battle to have a baby has included repeated IVF attempts that used donor eggs and required trips to Greece.

The pair tragically lost triplets three years ago.

Despite the incredible loss, Mary has always allowed her strong will to be a mum overshadow her heartbreak.

“I didn’t feel it was fair to end the story there for us,” she told Woman’s Day earlier this month.

“I felt like for all those years, efforts and wishes, that couldn’t be the only result. It’s a matter of what you can withstand. Even after that massive loss, I felt I had the courage to keep trying. I was tempted to stop this last year because I just didn’t know how much more I could take. But sometimes the idea of stopping is harder than going on.”

Not long after her decision to keep trying, Mary fell pregnant. But throughout her pregnancy she remained cautious.

“After an experience like mine, and after all the public outpouring of support, and after all the stories that were sent to me, you realise you’re never safe. People have stillborns at 36 weeks. I don’t have an average experience behind me. I’ve just got to look forward and incrementally break it up in my mind.”

Now that their beautiful baby has safely arrived, the pair are excitedly making final changes to their daughter’s nursery and Mary is planning a baby shower.

Having cancer helped me find my own path

Cancer helped me find my own path

Jennifer McNamara was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer on the 8th of March 2005.

“I don’t think anyone ever forgets the date that they were diagnosed,” she recounts. “It was three days before my mother’s birthday and when I turned up, wanting to tell her in person, she knew something was wrong.”

After a second opinion re-evaluated her initial prognosis of a possible mastectomy back to a lumpectomy, Jennifer began her course of treatment which involved six rounds of chemotherapy, followed by six weeks of radiation and six months of Herceptin.

“I was working full time in government in a marketing role, was really stressed and not enjoying it. I didn’t have a passion for what I was doing anymore. I wanted a change, but felt I was on this merry-go-round. I didn’t know how to get off. Then suddenly I was flung off.”

Jennifer’s surgery was successful and the subsequent treatments cleared her of cancer, but the entire experience was a life-altering one for her.

“It makes you slow down. You get very patient when you become a patient, because you’re sitting in hospitals just waiting for your turn. You’re having blood tests, you wait for your chemo, and you just have to wait. It takes time. You just have to learn to accept that this is your focus at the moment, this is what’s important. So it was like a gift.”

This gift of perspective and the chance of being cured, gave Jennifer the opportunity to begin her life anew.

She got back into art and eventually, she opened up an art school called Art Est. in Leichhardt, Sydney. Here Jennifer runs art workshops for kids and adults as well as other survivors of cancer and people who are going through their own journeys.

“Different people have different things going on in their lives, whether its cancer or some other illness, like mental illness, or just stress in their family, or they are seeking a work life balance. So that’s why art has become really important. For me it was my catalyst” says Jennifer.

She treated her year of recovery as a year of discovery and has decided not to return to the corporate world, instead focusing on her passion for art and for inspiring others to follow their passion.

Jennifer has this advice for anyone going through a similar experience, “Find your own path. Explore the opportunities that are presented to you. You don’t know how you’ll respond until you’re actually experiencing it.”

She reveals, “It’s like you’ve been let in on this secret – you actually can change your life. It gives you the courage to try new things and to take those big leaps of faith, do things you haven’t done or haven’t had the courage to do before.”

“It does give you that second chance at life. I know it sounds cliché but it really does.”

With the help of donations, the newly opened Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in Sydney’s Camperdown aims to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families by bringing together all the elements of cancer research, medical treatment and complementary therapies including art classes, all under the one roof.

Anti-bingeing bra stops women overeating

Sensing stress levels, skin temperature, and changes in heart rate, the prototype bra monitors apparent precursors to overeating and notifies its wearer of these habitual snacking triggers via a smartphone app, the Daily Mail reports.

Researcher Mary Czerwinski says by alerting the wearer to their habits, the device urges women to change their ways.

“The rationale for the criticality of monitoring is that it helps patients to be more aware of what is happening in the moment,” she writes in her paper Food and Mood: Just-in-Time Support for Emotional Eating.

“They can begin to make changes to behaviour that may have seemed automatic or beyond their control.”

Powered by a battery and featuring sensors in the bra’s cup pockets, the garment senses changes in its wearer’s mood and streams data to be viewed on the accompanying smartphone app.

Tested by volunteers over a four-day period, the product’s developers said the pilot results were “quite promising”.

“Using log files, we were able to detect around at 75 per cent and [emotions] at 72.62 per cent,” they wrote.

The one setback of the battery-operated sensing system that volunteers reported was that it needed to be recharged every three to four hours, making the process.

The company is also reportedly looking to develop bracelets with similar functionality so that men too can monitor their overeating warning signs.

William and Kate as you’ve never seen them before

The royal couple are the stars of this week’s issue of Bloomberg Businessweek to illustrate the expansion of US clothing brand J. Crew.

The label is a favourite Kate’s – it’s where she buys most of her jeans – and has just launched in the UK with great success.

The cover sees William and Kate dancing around “wearing” the retailer’s clothing alongside the headline: “J.Crew – Teaching the world to dress American.”

We’re sure the royal family wouldn’t be too happy with the image, but we just love it.

Kate also showed off her new hair at the event, which appeared both shorter and darker in colour than it has in recent months.

SportsAid – which helps young sports stars achieve their full potential – is one of Kate’s favourite charities.

Kate was flying solo at the gala and seemed thrilled to be out on her own for an evening.

Photoshop fail: When airbrushed ads go too far

Lady Gaga

Only weeks after publicly criticising a magazine for overdoing it with Photoshop on her cover image, Lady Gaga is lauding overly airbrushed shots of her in starring in the latest Versace campaign.

With skin smoothed over to resemble plastic and not a line in sight, the retouchers have clearly gone to town on this campaign, and though Gaga doesn’t mind – she said she “adores” the shoot – some are labelling her a hypocrite for endorsing the overly airbrushed images.

These pictures of Lady Gaga aren’t the first to cause upset in the advertising world.

Lengthening eyelashes in mascara ads and smoothing over wrinkles in anti-aging cream endorsements has seen ads banned and the celebrities they star very upset.

Lady Gaga said on Twitter that she adored the shots, but recently slammed a magazine for airbrushing her image.

This illustration, part of a Roberto Cavalli campaign, stripped Beyonce of her famous curves.

Beyonce’s curves were also smoothed over in this H&M campaign. She was outraged.

Beyonce’s curves were also smoothed over in this H&M campaign. She was outraged.

This Lancome ad featuring a Photoshopped Julia Roberts was banned for being misleading.

Jennifer Lawrence said she was thankful for Photoshop and loved these overly airbrushed images in her Dior campaign.

Taylor Swift’s eyelashes were enhanced in this Covergirl ad, and also caused it to be pulled.

We don’t think Christy Turlington needs airbrushing but this campaign certainly did.

This ad featuring Rachel Weisz was banned in the UK for “misleadingly exaggerating” the effects of the product by altering her skin.

An ad for Dior mascara featuring Natalie Portman and “digitally lengthened” lashes was banned.

After pressure from an advertising regulatory body that claimed Maybelline went overboard with Photoshop, this ad was “permanently discontinued”.

Cosmetic brand Make Up For Ever championed this Photoshop-free campaign.
