Supré slammed for sexualising young girls

The products that sparked the petition.

The petition posted online by feminist lobby group Collective Shout has demanded the clothing store, popular among teens, pull t-shirts with suggestive slogans like “jingle my bells” and “big booty b—hes” from its racks, and called on the chain to “make a commitment to exercise corporate responsibility to its young customers now and in the future”.

“It is time Supré paid attention to research and concerns expressed by leading child psychologists about sexualisation,” the petition’s author Melinda Liszewski wrote on change.org.

“Girls are experiencing unprecedented levels of anxiety, body image issues and eating disorders… It is these problems that Supré is contributing to through its marketing.”

Since being published online on Wednesday morning, the petition has been getting closer to its goal of 5000 signatories with hundreds voicing comments of support and sharing on social media.

Ms Liszewski began the protest after being sent an image of the “jingle my bells” t-shirt and found more items she was offended by online.

“This is a store for young girls,” she told The Weekly.

“How many young girls are going to know the full implications of these messages? They may not understand that ‘jingle my bells’ is an invitation that’s been plastered across their chest.”

Supré was the subject of community outrage in 2010 attracting the attention of then NSW Premier Kristina Keneally who called on the chain to withdraw t-shirts with slogans “Santa’s b—h” and “North Pole Dancer”.

Ms Liszewski said she was “surprised to see this happen again”.

Child sexualisation expert Dr Emma Rush from Charles Sturt University said she found the messages exploitative and applauded the protest.

“Sexualised slogans on t-shirts for adult women are offensive, on t-shirts for young teenage girls they are completely unacceptable. They promote acceptance of a pornified culture,” she told The Weekly.

Dr Rush said withdrawing the items from sale would give Supré an opportunity to do something positive.

“It’s a clear case of business ethics. If a business’s main market is underage girls they’ve essentially got a duty of care to their customers. They’ve got an opportunity here to be responsible, to be leaders, and change their ways.”

Supré has responded with a decision to withdraw the “jingle my bells” t-shirt from sale in stores and online saying “we regret that the singlet in question may have alarmed [customers]” and has apologised to customers in a statement to The Weekly.

When questioned about the other slogan t-shirts referred to in the petition a representative from the Cotton On Group said it was just the one product that would be withdrawn at this time.

“That’s the one we have had the most customer engagement around but we are reviewing all of the products in that collection and will make a statement when a decision has been made.”

Nigella: ‘I did take cocaine, but I’m not an addict’

Nigella: ‘I did take cocaine, but I’m not an addict’

Domestic goddess Nigella Lawson has told a court she has taken cocaine before, but said claims that she’s a drug addict are “absolutely ridiculous”.

“I have never been a drug addict. I’ve never been a habitual user,” she said in the Isleworth Crown Court on Wednesday.

“There are two times in my life when I have used cocaine.”

The court heard that the Brit snorted cocaine six times with her late husband John Diamond after he found out he had terminal cancer. She did it once again in July 2010 when she was being “subjected to intimate terrorism by [Charles] Saatchi”, her ex-husband.

“A friend of mine offered me some cocaine. I took it,” she told the court. She went on to say that the experience “spooked” her and she went to see a doctor.

“I concluded that I did not have a drug problem, I had a life problem and I needed to attend to that and I did seek out a therapist,” she added.

Nigella also admitted to smoking cannabis during the final year of her marriage to Saatchi, without his knowledge.

“I found it made an intolerable situation tolerable,” she told the court.

“It’s a false friend and not a good idea. I found the answer was in changing the situation and trying to create a tolerable situation for me and my family,” she said.

“I have to say, since freeing myself from a brilliant but brutal man, I’m now totally cannabis, cocaine, any drug-free.”

The 53-year-old mother of two made the admissions as she gave evidence at the trial of her two former personal assistants, Elisabetta and Francesca Grillo.

Nigella testified against the pair, who are being accused of fraud against Charles’s company, Conraco Partnership, for unlawfully using company credit cards to purchase more than $530,000 worth of luxury goods.

Nigella also told the court about the dispute with Saatchi that sparked the infamous choking photos at a London restaurant.

“What actually happened was that somebody walked by with a very cute baby in a stroller and I said, ‘I am so looking forward to having grandchildren,’ and he grabbed me by the throat and said, ‘I am the only person you should be concerned with. I am the only person who should be giving you pleasure,’” she said. “That is what happened.”

Nigella also told the court that her ex-husband launched a “witch-hunt” against her and tried to “ruin her in any way” after the incident. The court heard that Saatchi had a mindset of, “Get her – I don’t care what it takes,” because he felt betrayed by her.

“I think he likes everyone to do what he wants,” she told the court.

In response to claims Saatchi threatened to sue her if she did not give evidence in court, she said it was “just another form of bullying”.

Nigella said throughout their relationship she had not been beaten, but had been left with “emotional scars”, which were “very wounding and very difficult and of course we know how things accelerated”.

The case has been adjourned until tomorrow.

The pair reportedly enjoyed some time backstage together following the opening night of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot on Broadway and continued their flirting at the after party held at Manhattan’s Bryant Park Grill.

Orlando separated from his wife Miranda Kerr in October following months of split speculation.

As exclusively reported in Woman’s Day, Miranda has sparked up a relationship with Australian billionaire James Packer.

Men with asthma struggle with sex

The Asthma Australia report also found nearly one in five women admitted they struggled to perform in the bedroom because of the condition.

The findings shine a light on an often overlooked aspect of asthma, which affects more than two million Australians. As a result, doctors are encouraging people with asthma to seek help with medication and treatment if their sex lives are suffering.

Researchers discovered asthma was impeding romance in other ways too: 37 per cent couldn’t keep up at nightclubs and bars, instead leaving early, while 33 per cent worried about wheezing at the movies or theatre.

The Live, Love Play report – to be launched as part of an interactive awareness campaign today –  investigates the debilitating impact of asthma on everyday life.

It was a significant obstacle in family life, with 30 per cent of dads confessing they avoided playtime with their children because symptoms got in the way. More than a third of mums and dads said they’d run around more with their kids if they were able to – and one in six found it hard to carry their child for long.

In the workplace, more than half of sufferers had to take time off because of uncontrolled asthma at least once a year, while 35 per cent of professionals and almost 60 per cent of senior management believed their careers had been held back by it.

The findings highlight the heavy price of uncontrolled asthma, which experts believe can be ameliorated by seeking medical help.

More than 1000 Australians with poor asthma control took part in the survey, which found 29 per cent of men and 18 per cent of women had encountered problems in the bedroom because of their condition.
