Is 50 too young to retire?

We’re living for longer than ever but Australian women are still taking early retirement when they turn 50.

New figures from the Bureau of Statistics showed that the average retirement age for women was 50, despite the government urging people to work until they are 67.

Men are also falling short of government expectations, retiring at an average age of 59.

Despite these figures, a survey on “retirement intentions” found that one in five working people aged 45 or over were not planning to retire until at least 70.

Half of those surveyed planned to retire between 65 and 69, 25 per cent between 60 and 64.

The report also found that workers didn’t have a realistic idea about where their income would come from once they retired.

It showed that half of those planning to retire expected their main source of income would come from superannuation, but only 17 per cent of retirees found this to be the case.

In reality, the majority of retirees’ income came from government pensions and allowances. A large number of women, 44 per cent, also relied on their partner’s income as their main source of income.

New fitness trend Pounds away fat!

New fitness trend Pounds away fat!

There’s a reason we all looked so good during our nightclubbing days and have probably never seen a fat drummer – the latest US fitness craze, Pound, has figured out the benefit of drumming and cardio dance and combined it into a 45-minute fun, fat-burning workout.

There’s a reason we all looked so good during our nightclubbing days and have probably never seen a fat drummer – the latest US fitness craze, Pound, has figured out the benefit of drumming and cardio dance and combined it into a 45-minute fun, fat-burning workout.

The popular US fitness craze already has a celebrity following, with P Diddy, Mario Lopez and reality star Kris Jenner all loving the drumming workout routine and now, for first time, it’s reached our sandy Australian shores.

Pound founders Kirsten Potenza and Cristina Peerenboom invented the fitness program that combines their passion for music, drumming and fitness with an exercise combo of cardio, Pilates, isometric and plyometric movement.

The fitness enthusiasts’ classes, which incorporate neon green lightweight Ripstix “glowsticks” is said to burn between 2500-3500kJ per hour.

The co-founders and drumming friends invented the hot new concept after a jam session resulted in a broken drum seat, which forced the two friends to stand and play.

“From this we felt the benefits of drumming through extensive movement. We could relate a lot of this movement to Pilates and felt the way it worked our core,” they explain.

The co-creators knew they had a great idea by combining their hobby and love of music to make a new fitness routine that was fun and showed results.

“It’s important to show people that anyone can achieve great health and wellbeing and enjoy doing it at the same time,” they say.

“With Pound, we’ve created a workout that allows people to really get into the music and be distracted from the fact that they’re actually working quite hard.

“Anyone can do Pound. It’s a key part to our program that we always offer modifications and progressions so everyone can drum along to the music and get a fabulous workout.

Pound plays a mixture of music from rock, dubstep, rap, old-school and pop, which is all fused together to create a full-body, lightweight cardio workout, which is having positive results.

“We’ve heard of some very humbling stories come from Pound, especially from people who have rehabilitated their injuries, strengthened their bodies and have seen improvements to their overall wellbeing,” they say.

While Pound’s success is yet to be seen in Australia, the fitness duo are excited about the US hype and hope it will flow into the Australian market.

“We recently were part of the Dr Oz show and it was great to have him talk about the science behind Pound and what makes it unique. It was definitely a memorable moment,” say the women.

“We’re very grateful for where we’ve come from, and the fact that Pound has branched out internationally has been a dream come true,” they said.

Do we really need home-delivered McDonald’s?

McDonalds has started offering a delivery service.

Launching in a Sydney store, the service brings consumers closer to not even having to burn any extra calories by walking into a store, or just to their cars if they wish to drive-thru to collect a Big Mac.

The “McDelivery” service comes with a $4.95 delivery charge with customers required to spend a minimum of $25 from a pared back version of the restaurant’s menu.

If the delivery trial is successful, the service is likely to be expanded to provide door-to-door fast food service in more areas.

Health and parenting groups have already been vocal in protest, criticising the fast food giant for making unhealthy foods more accessible.

Others have raised logistical concerns like the matter of the crispness of fries being transported across suburbs in vehicles.

But supporters will argue offering home delivery is a logical step for the chain.

“Australians have enjoyed convenience of restaurant home delivery for decades and value having that option available to them,” a McDonald’s spokesperson told AdNews.

The diet that could beat dementia

The diet – which focuses on fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts, fish and olive oil – is “possibly the best strategy currently available” for preventing Alzheimer’s and other conditions involving memory loss, the doctors said.

In an open letter to the UK government, the experts urged the medical profession to focus on the benefits of the diet and not on the many “dubious” drugs flooding the market.

The letter’s signatories insists numerous studies have proven improvements to lifestyle have a “far greater effect” in the fight against dementia than anything else, including medications.

“The evidence base for the Mediterranean diet in preventing all of the chronic diseases plaguing the western world is overwhelming,” cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra says. “This includes cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s and cancer.

“Policymakers and the public need to know that such a diet is far more potent than the often dubious benefit of many medications and without side-effects.”

Prince Harry’s Antarctic race suspended

Already delayed after snowstorms made it impossible to start the race on time, it was decided on day five that the race element the Walking With The Wounded South Pole Challenge would be suspended.

Expedition Director Ed Parker announced the decision but assured it didn’t mean the trek was over.

“We always knew that this wasn’t going to be easy, but that is what makes the challenge so exciting,” he said.

“This does not mean that the expedition is over. Far from it. We came down here, determined to get 12 men and women, all injured in conflict, to the South Pole and so we will.”

Prince Harry is participating in the 330km charity trek with wounded servicemen and women to raise money for military charities.

In an audio blog recorded from his base camp last week, Harry, who started the race with a broken toe, reported on the trek noting the teams setbacks.

“There’s been a bit of bad luck here and there… time is quite tight on us now, it’s starting to hit us,” he said.

A few people are starting to get a little bit worried, understandably so.”

Harry’s teammate Guy Disney commented on the race’s suspension citing “a few small injuries – nothing too serious – and the weather” as the reasons behind the decision.

“It is really putting us behind and so the race element has been stopped, but for very good reasons,” he said.

Disney said there was “a bigger goal” to the trek, referring to the charity element.

Tomorrow the teams will start the last leg to the South Pole, travelling 112 kilometres, but without the added pressure of racing.

“The new race format [will enable] them all to do this in their own time,” Ed Parker said.

“By Friday or Saturday next week, I strongly believe that every member of the expedition will be standing on the South Pole, celebrating what will have been the most extraordinary shared journey.”

Prince Harry’s girlfriend, Cressida Bonas, training to become a teacher

Prince Harry might be thousands of kilometres away but his girlfriend Cressida Bonas isn't wasting time pining for him – instead, the blonde is reportedly devoting all her time to becoming a teacher.
Cressida Bonas

Cressida, 24, is said to have her heart set on a career in teaching and is studying so hard she was even photographed taking child development textbooks into a charity concert she attended last week.

“She’s keeping herself busy and working hard,” a friend told the Daily Mail.

Cressida is a trained dancer, but has decided to pursue a more respectable career now she is dating Harry.

Harry and Cressida have been dating for around 18 months after they were introduced by his cousin Princess Eugenie.

They have been inseparable, but have been apart for the past three weeks as Harry takes part in a trek to the South Pole for his beloved Walking with the Wounded charity.

The couple will be reunited in a couple of weeks and are said to be planning a romantic trip to Africa or Switzerland to make up for lost time.
