From Malcolm to Cate: My transformation

There is an old saying, sometimes attributed to Dr Seuss, about how you should give up pretending and just be who you are because: Those who mind don’t matter

And those who matter won’t mind.

Easier said than done, of course, especially when you’re keeping a secret as significant as the one that Lieutenant Colonel Cate McGregor AM – formerly Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm McGregor AM – kept for nigh on 50 years.

Cate was born a boy but she always felt like a girl. She tried to hide it, mainly by flexing what she saw as the masculine side of her personality as a soldier in our armed forces but, she says, “it got to the point, in my mid-50s, where I could not stand it anymore”.

In an interview in this month’s The Australian Women’s Weekly, Cate explains how she had to tell the truth about herself, which in turn meant giving up her name, her marriage, and ultimately her military career, to live as a woman.

It meant having the toughest conversations of her life, with her then-wife (she’s now a great friend); her sisters and other family members; with her boss, the hyper-masculine, khaki-clad Chief of Army, David Morrison AO; and with one of her closest friends, the Prime Minister, Tony Abbott.

“I knew I’d have to tell him,” she says, “because our friendship is one of the oldest, most continuous friendships of my life.’”

And what did Abbott say?

“I got the most loving response,” says Cate, delighted. “He said, ‘look, it changes nothing’. Then he said, ‘what’s your preferred name now?’ And ever since, he’s called me Cate.”

Cate tells The Weekly that she had misgivings about her gender from the earliest age, but could not find a way to express the idea.

“I was fascinated with women’s clothes, but I’d tried on Mum’s dresses and I’d gotten into awful trouble, so I never did it again,” she says.

Her sister, Mary Saunders, who is 16 years older, says her memory of Cate as a little boy are that “she was very shy and quite timid. But I never suspected her troubles with gender”.

Cate’s father died when she was eight. He had fought at Kokoda, and her grandfather fought at Fromelles. As a way of connecting with them, she joined the Army.

“I had an idea about the military being the ultimate expression of masculinity,” she says, “But I wasn’t thinking, this will make me a man. It wasn’t as conscious as that.”

She was diagnosed as ‘transgender’ (somebody who feels they’ve been assigned the wrong gender at birth) in 1985 but decided to ‘white-knuckle’ through the diagnosis.

In 1995, she met the woman who became her wife and says “from that day on, I was deeply in love. I had met my soul mate, the person I was meant to be with, and I adored her to bits.

“But by 2011, I was in very bad shape,” Cate says. “I was boiling over with the idea that I was living the wrong gender. I can’t convey – I don’t have the language – to explain what it was like to live in that turmoil, but it was a nightmare.”

She went back to the psychiatrist who said: “It’s a no-brainer. You are transgender.”

“I was waiting for somebody to say, here, take this pill, and it will all be fine,” says Cate, “and he said, it won’t be fine. Can’t you see that? I said, but I’m an infantry officer, I’m married, it’s too late, I’m 50-something years old, it’s not an option. He said, I’m puzzled you’ve got this far.

“But I was still so scared. I thought, my fate is to be a tragic figure, socially ostracised. And that was frightening, but the greatest loss would be my marriage. I knew I would lose my wife, and I was completely in love with her, and it broke my heart.”

The Aussie beauty queen opens up about their budding romance in the January issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly, revealing their relationship is so serious Buddy recently met her parents.

“It’s the first time I have felt strongly enough about someone that I wanted my parents to meet him,” the 22-year-old blonde tells The Weekly.

“I was never going to bring home someone I was just dating or someone I was having a fling with.”

The meeting was a huge success, much to the relief of Jesinta who had been worried Buddy’s bad boy reputation would cloud her parents’ view of him.

“It went really well,” she says. “It was nice for Lance to finally meet the people in the world who are most important to me, and for them to meet the person who is most important in my life right now.

“We decided to do brunch and, at 5pm, I was ushering Mum and Dad out the door. I think it’s safe to say he was a hit.”

The couple aren’t yet living together but are spending “pretty much every night” at Buddy’s Bondi bachelor pad.

Jesinta says they’re “very happy”, hinting she hopes marriage and children are in their future.

“In five years’ time, I definitely see myself starting a family,” she says.

Asked if there might be someone in her life right now Jesinta would consider doing that with she replied: “Maybe! I’m not going to let you put words in my mouth, but that’s definitely a position I’d like to be in!”

Kate kicks off Christmas celebrations in festive red frock

Prince William drove the couple in for the Queen’s annual festive feast where royals and distinguished guests arrived en masse to welcome in the season.

Kate wore a cherry red coat to the traditional family affair, but appeared to have left the youngest royal at home with an apparently empty baby seat sitting in the back of the Range Rover, the Daily Mail reports.

Crowds lined the Mall outside the palace to welcome royals as they arrived en masse.

Her Majesty welcomed Prince Charles, Camilla, Prince Edward, Princess Anne, Princess Beatrice, the Duchess of Kent and other members of the royal family.

Prince Harry was absent from the annual celebration, having just completed his charity trek to the South Pole.

The 29-year-old royal is expected to join the Queen and other family members at Sandringham for Christmas.

William, Kate, and baby George will reportedly spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Sandringham for the five-month old Prince’s first Christmas.

Pippa Middleton engaged to Nico Jackson?

Pippa Middleton engaged to Nico Jackson?

The Middleton sister who almost stole the show at the royal wedding is reportedly engaged to her bank boyfriend Nico Jackson.

Pippa, 30, and Nico, 36 recently returned from a romantic holiday in India, where they stayed at the Oberoi Amarvilas, a five-star resort with views of the Taj Mahal, where he apparently popped the question.

“It was exactly how he planned it,” a source told Us Weekly of the proposal, which was “very romantic and grand”.

While there has been no confirmation from the couple just yet, another source say the pair are planning to carry out a pact they made to travel the world before they settle down.

“Pippa and Nico made a pact to travel to lots of exotic locations before walking down the aisle to start a family,” they said.

“There will be lots of trips like this in coming months.”

The couple, who arrived home on December 10, have not made an official announcement, nor was there an engagement ring on Pippa’s finger. But they’re said to be celebrating in private and plan to spend Boxing Day with their families before heading to the Alps for yet another vacation in the New Year.

The pair were first pictured together while holidaying in Mustique with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. They have been on numerous romantic trips since.

Rugged royal: Prince Harry shows off new polar beard

As we followed his progress racing through freezing conditions to reach the world’s most southern point in aid of the charity Walking With the Wounded, we noticed the rebellious Prince was cultivating some face fuzz.

But on a visit to the National Science Foundation’s South Pole station over the weekend, he revealed a full blown ginger beard, with this images capturing the 29-year-old royal striking a particularly brooding pose.

Harry and his teammates, including several wounded servicemen and women, arrived at the South Pole on December 13 after a tumultuous trip.

He is due for the royals’ annual Christmas appearance outside the Sandringham church next week, sparking speculation that the royal may have to show up clean-shaven.

Harry’s new look has also raised the question over whether his girlfriend, Cressida Bonas, is a beard-loving lady or if she will disapprove of the royal’s rugged look.

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of New South Wales indicated women prefer men with heavy stubble over a smooth chin.

An intermediate level of beardedness was most found to be most attractive to women, the study suggested, while a full-bearded man may be perceived as a better father who could protect and invest in offspring.

My brain injury is the best thing that ever happened to me

Dr Christine Durham, who used her experience with brain injury to transform the lives of other sufferers.

Dr Christine Durham, who used her experience with brain injury to transform the lives of other sufferers.

Mother of four Christine Durham finally felt like her life was on the up when a negligent driver slammed into her car, leaving her with devastating brain injuries.

The crash forced Christine’s vehicle into a telegraph pole, smashing her ribs in dozens of places and unable to read, write or communicate.

“It took 40 minutes for rescue workers to cut me out of my car, and a week for me to wake up after my accident,” Christine says.

“I was really crook, I had 42 breaks in my chest alone, and I woke in agony. I couldn’t communicate with the outside world.”

Christine spent five weeks in hospital, and kept telling herself she would return to normal when she went home. She was wrong.

“When I got home I felt lost, like I didn’t know who I was,” she says. “I couldn’t find anything around the house, and I certainly wasn’t the ‘old me’.”

Anxious for her life to return to normal, Christine went back to her job as a primary school teacher just seven weeks after the crash.

“I was desperate to get back to teaching, thinking that would spark something in my memory about my life before the accident,” she says.

“Of course I couldn’t read or write anymore, so my lessons weren’t exactly conventional. I was hooked on exploring the philosophy of thinking, and began using objects to guide my students to learn to use their brain in another way.”

Without realising it Christine had begun her recovery too, and began keeping a diary of her progress, which would later be published by Penguin as a book, Doing Up Buttons.

“I wanted to give other people suffering from a brain injury a guide, a compass for recovery,” she says. “Isolation is something people with brain injuries feel in spades, and this was my way of reaching out.”

Not content with one publication, Christine has now written three more books and most impressively, a 500,000-word PhD thesis.

“I still have double vision when I look at a computer screen and I can only type with one finger so completing my thesis was a slow process,” she says.

Christine’s doctoral thesis explores life after brain injury for 36 people and some of their carers, providing valuable insight into their daily struggle to communicate and be understood.

“We feel ashamed of our injury,” she says. “To acknowledge that your brain is damaged is to admit to being slow, to admit to being mad.

“There is nothing worse that telling someone what is wrong with you, as there is such a huge stigma attached to our injuries.”

Christine’s tireless advocacy for people with brain injuries led to her being awarded the Victorian Senior of the Year 2014, meaning she is a finalist for the national award.

“I was nominated by a young man with a brain injury who found my book useful, and helped me fundraise to have more copies circulated,” she says.

“I’m certainly not in this sphere for the money, all my work and travel is self-funded, but I love what I do and am passionate about getting more people to understand brain injury.

“Through my thesis I learnt many people have been damaged twice: once by their injury, and a second time by the system. I want to change that.”

Today, 22 years after her accident, Christine, now 69, says she feels more like her ‘old’ self than ever before, and has no plans on slowing down.

“After I was injured, the only thing that kept me going was my youngest son [then 15]patting me on the knee,” she says. “That simple act kept me alive.”

These days she works constantly but says she is just making up for lost time.

“I plan on working until I am at least 85! It is such a thrill to be able to help people. Having a brain injury is both the best and worst thing that has happened to me.”

Kim K copying Duchess Kate’s royal wedding

Kim K copying Duchess Kate’s royal wedding

It looks like the world will be treated to another royal wedding – if Kim Kardashian has her way.

The reality TV star and her rapper fiance Kanye West are set to have a wedding fit for “American royalty”.

“Kim is absolutely obsessed with everything Kate and William do. She considers her own family American royalty,” a source tells UK Grazia.

Kim, 33, is even planning on wearing a dress exactly like the stunning Alexander McQueen gown Kate wore on her big day.

“Kim loves Kate’s style and while she’s planning on several gowns for her big day, she wants the one for the ceremony to look something like Kate’s dress,” the source says.

Kim and Kanye, 36, have even looked into renting their own palace – the Palace of Versailles in Paris – for their big day.

The pair, who are parents to 6-month-old North, are also considering gold thrones during their reception.

“They think it would be really cool to have gold thrones to sit on during the reception,” the source says.

“They already have a Buckingham Palace-themed room in their new home, which they’re using as inspiration.”

Meanwhile, Kim has said she isn’t so sold on the traditional wedding ceremony following her second marriage to Kris Humphries. But when asked if she and Kanye would elope over the Christmas holidays, she says, “No, not that I know of.”

“But he [Kanye] is the kind of random, spur-of-the-moment type of guy, so you never know.

“He really is the most romantic, sweetest person I’ve ever met in my entire life,” Kim says.
