Amanda Knox ‘frightened’ by second guilty verdict

Amanda Knox

Amanda Knox

Knox, who was sharing a house with Miss Kercher in Italy at the time of the 2007 murder, was sentenced to 28 years and six months in jail. Her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, was also found guilty and sentenced to 25 years.

In a statement, the American said she was “frightened and saddened by this unjust verdict”.

However, Knox is living in Seattle and will only serve her sentence if she is extradited, a process that could be expected to take a year while the verdict is finalised. Sollecito, on the other hand, is Italian and could be arrested at any time.

Lawyers for both indicated they would appeal against the verdict.

“Having been found innocent before, I expected better from the Italian justice system,” Knox said. “The evidence and accusatory theory do not justify a verdict of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Rather, nothing has changed. There has always been a marked lack of evidence. My family and I have suffered greatly from this wrongful persecution.”

Knox acknowledged that Miss Kercher’s family deserved respect and support but also hit out at the “overzealous and intransigent prosecution, prejudiced and narrow-minded investigation, unwillingness to admit mistake, reliance on unreliable testimony and evidence, character assassination, inconsistent and unfounded accusatory theory, and counterproductive and coercive interrogation techniques that produce false confessions and inaccurate statements”.

Knox and Sollecito were first found guilty of murdering Miss Kercher at a 2009 trial, when headlines dubbed her “Foxy Knoxy” in a case that attracted widespread global attention.

Prosecutors claimed at that trial that the couple and drug dealer Rudy Guede had been involved in a drug-fuelled sex game that led to Miss Kercher’s murder. Guede is currently serving a 16-year sentence over her death but courts have said he did not act alone.

Knox and Sollecito were cleared following an independent review of the evidence in 2011 and released.  In March last year, an Italian court overturned the appeal and ordered a fresh trial.

Miss Kercher’s family was in court to hear the verdict. “We didn’t know what to expect. We are still in shock,” her sister Stephanie Kercher, said.

Ian Thorpe heads home from ‘rehab’

Ian Thorpe at the launch of his autobiography in 2012.

The 31-year-old five-time Olympic gold medallist was admitted to a Sydney hospital on Wednesday night after injuring himself in a fall earlier in the week, the Daily Telegraph reported overnight.

Friends told the paper Thorpe’s mental health had been in decline since his London Olympics comeback attempt failed in 2012.

He has been living in Switzerland for the past 18 months but returned to his family’s Panania home for Christmas.

He spent time at Bankstown Hospital and Strathfield Private Hospital before being released this afternoon.

Thorpe’s management has denied he was seeking treatment for depression and alcohol issues, claiming he was in hospital for shoulder surgery.

“Ian is not in rehab,” an SEL representative said. “Ian was in hospital for an operation on his shoulder and is pleased to let his friends and fans know that he is now out of hospital and on the mend.”

Despite the denial, dozens of Thorpe’s friends and associates – including best friend Alan Jones and mentor and fellow Olympic champion Kieran Perkins – have come forward acknowledging Thorpe’s problems and praising him for seeking treatment.

Perkins said he was “not surprised” to hear of Thorpe’s hospitalisation, while Jones – who said he had spoken to Thorpe last night – admitted the demons the sports star was facing were “serious”.

Thorpe revealed his battle with depression and alcohol abuse in an autobiography released in 2012.

“Not even my family is aware that I’ve spent a lot of my life battling what I can only describe as crippling depression,” he wrote.

He also said he used alcohol as a way of dealing with hard times in his life.

Amanda Knox found guilty at murder retrial

Amanda Knox found guilty at murder retrial

Amanda Knox and her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito have been found guilty at their retrial for the murder of British student Meredith Kercher in 2007.

The court sentenced Knox to 28 years and six months in prison while Sollecito was sentenced to 25 years.

Knox, who now lives in Seattle, pleaded not guilty in her third trial before the Italian Supreme Court.

The verdict, which took nearly 12 hours of deliberation, overturned the pair’s successful 2011 appeal after four years in jail.

The guilty verdict was read out in a courtroom in Florence, where Meredith’s brother Lyle and sister Stephanie were present.

The court ordered that damages be paid by the pair to Meredith’s family.

Prosecutors claim Meredith was the victim of a drug-fuelled sex game gone wrong after she was found with her throat slashed in the bedroom of the house she shared with Knox.

Throughout all three trials, Knox and Sollecito have pleaded their innocence.

Mannequins with back fat to boost sales

The mannequins at US bridal retailer David’s Bridal will soon be getting thicker waists, varied breasts and back fat to mimic the more realistic shapes of their shoppers.

The traditional tall and svelte mannequin silhouette seems to no longer resonate with the public who want to see clothes modelled on relatable figures and many retailers are making an effort to meet the demand.

“This will give (a shopper) a better idea of what the dress will look like on her,” says Michele Von Plato, a vice president at America’s largest bridal chain.

As a part of retailers efforts to make their silent salespeople look like those who wear their clothes, designers have been experimenting with a variety of skin tones, shape and even hair as studies confirm that mannequin shapes do matter.

Data collected by the research firm NPD Group Inc. suggests that forty-two per cent of customers surveyed say that store clothing displays have a strong influence on their buying behaviour. In fact behind friends and family mannequins ranked third in their purchasing persuasion abilities.

While some stores are taking a serious approach to their mannequin makeovers American Apparel recently made headlines for their cheeky new displays. The iconic teen retailer recently sported window displays that featured figures wearing lingerie with pubic hair and nipples poking out under sheer fabric.

“We created it to invite passers-by to explore the idea of what is sexy and consider their comfort with the natural female form,” said company spokesperson, Ryan Holiday.

American Apparel says consumer traffic in their flagship store in New York City’s trendy SoHo district has increased 30 per cent since the introduction of their attention grabbing exhibitions.
