Leukemia patient, 9, becomes police chief for a day

Police officers in Detroit have made a sick little boy's dreams come true, allowing him to become chief for a day.
Jayvon Felton

Police officers in Detroit have made a sick little boy’s dreams come true, allowing him to become chief for a day.

Jayvon Felton, nine, has been suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a type of blood cancer, since April 2013.

Most days, Jayvon struggles to get out of bed but he had some extra motivation this week in the form of a very special job opportunity.

The Detroit Police Force invited Jayvon to be chief for a day, flying him to their headquarters in a helicopter where he was met by his schoolmates, who he has not seen since he was diagnosed with cancer.

As his friends watched, a delighted Jayvon was sworn in to service by Detroit Police Chief James Craig.

“I can only imagine the strength and courage it takes for this young man, police chief, to fight this illness every day,” Craig said. “Chief Jayvon, are you up for the challenge. Are you ready to run this great police department?”

Jayvon said he was and thanked everyone for coming before attending a pizza party with police, friends and family.

Despite his debilitating illness, Jayvon’s prognosis is good. He is getting better, slowly, and might even get to return to school later this year.

Prince George is growing up fast!

The public has been given its first glimpse of Prince George since his christening last October – and he has certainly grown!
Kate Middleton and Prince George

The six-month-old baby appears on the cover of the latest issue of Hello! magazine in the arms of his mum the Duchess of Cambridge.

The image was snapped as Kate and George were disembarking a British Airways flight on the Caribbean island of St Vincent.

Mum and baby seemed to be in excellent spirits, soaking up some sun on the tarmac before boarding a private jet to Mustique, where they enjoyed a tropical holiday with the Middleton clan.

Kate and George flew first class, accompanied by two royal bodyguards and her brother James.

Her parents Carole and Michael Middleton and sister Pippa were already in the family’s Mustique villa, having caught an earlier flight.

William remained in the UK to continue his studies at Cambridge University.

Mustique is an extremely exclusive holiday destination, with just 74 villas on the whole island and one small hotel. It is a favourite of the Middletons, who are there celebrating Carole’s 59th birthday.

Kate and George returned to London yesterday.

Justin Bieber’s Aussie drug scandal

Justin Bieber's Aussie drug scandal

From top 10 hits to 12 hits from a bong everyday.

With what we’ve learned about him in the past few weeks, it comes as little surprise to discover that out-of-control pop star Justin Bieber got into his share of drug trouble during his Australian tour in November.

But the 19-year-old singer, now facing DUI charges in the US, got off lightly when it was found he’d been smoking marijuana in a five-star Sydney hotel.

On top of his $9000 bill for his three-day stay in Sheraton On The Park’s best suite, it can be revealed that Justin was also forced to pay $300 a day as a penalty for smoking pot in his room.

Hotel staff said the hefty charge is usually applied only once, enough to give the guests the non-smoking message. But if evidence of smoke was detected subsequently by housekeeping staff, additional $300 fines applied.

The Sheraton’s management refused to comment officially on the drugs scandal.

The Canadian-born teen pop sensation’s life has been spiralling out of control recently, with friends and aides so worried about his “12 bongs a day” marijuana habit and cough-syrup addiction that they’re urging him to go into rehab before it’s too late.

During his stay in Sydney, Justin made a visit to King’s Cross’s Bada Bing strip club, where he met several strippers and allegedly took them back to his hotel room.

While on the Gold Coast, he became embroiled in controversy when he sprayed graffiti on the QT hotel.

And even before Justin arrived for his Australian tour, his heartthrob appeal had started to wane as more and more reports emerged of his wild lifestyle, including serial brothel and strip club visits.

At the time, one industry heavyweight claimed Justin was “doing a very good impression of an enfant terrible, which seems to be putting off his fans”.

The world has been given another look at the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s adorable son, Prince George.

The six-month-old is featured on the latest cover of Hello! magazine in the UK with his mum, Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, on his first holiday abroad.

The image is the public’s first glimpse of baby George since his christening last October and he has certainly grown since then!

The photograph was taken as Kate and George disembarked a British Airways flight on the Caribbean island of St Vincent, before boarding a private jet to private island Mustique.

Both mother and baby looked happy as they began their summer holiday with Kate’s parents Carole and Michael Middleton, plus sister Pippa and brother James.

Prince William has been unable to attend the holiday as he continues his studies at Cambridge University in England.

The holiday will no doubt prepare George for the long trip he is expected to make to Australia and New Zealand in April.

Barbie boss defends doll’s unrealistic body

Barbie Dolls

Kim Culmone – the vice president of design at Mattel, the company that produces the doll – rejected complaints about Barbie’s proportions, insisting her rail-thin physique was chosen for purely practical reasons.

“Barbie’s body was never designed to be realistic,” she said. “She was designed for girls to easily dress and undress. And she’s had many bodies over the years, ones that are poseable, ones that are cut for princess cuts, ones that are more realistic.

“There’s also the issue of heritage. This is a 55-year-old brand where moms are handing clothes down to their daughters, and so keeping the integrity of that is really important.”

When asked by Fast Company if Mattel would ever release a Barbie that had more realistic proportions, Culmone was cagey, saying most girls had no problem with Barbie’s current body. “To me, there isn’t an objective to change the proportion of Barbie currently,” she said. “And to little girls, they are putting themselves in that doll anyway. “You have to remember that girls’ perceptions are so different than grown ups’ perceptions about what real is and what real isn’t, and what the influences are.”

Teen petitions for plus-size Disney princesses

Jewel Moore, who describes herself as “plus-size”, was so sick of the animation giant’s unrealistically thin princesses she decided to do something about it.

Jewel launched a petition on website Charge.org entitled: “Make Plus-Size Princesses in Disney Movies!”

“I’m a plus-size young woman, and I know many plus-size girls and women who struggle with confidence and need a positive plus-size character in the media,” Jewel write.

“If Disney could make a plus-size female protagonist who was as bright, amazing, and memorable as their others, it would do a world of good for those plus-size girls out there who are bombarded with images that make them feel ugly for not fitting the skinny standard.”

Evidently, thousands agree with her – the days following the petition’s launch, Moore has garnered over 11,000 signatures.

The exaggerated femininity of Disney princesses reached new heights in the firm’s latest hit, Frozen, which features Anna, whose eyeballs are actually larger than her wrists.

Russia’s Winter Olympics have courted yet more controversy, this time subjecting female members of the national team to a bizarre lingerie shoot.

Some of the Russian team’s brightest stars feature in the images, scantily-clad in bras and underwear, some posing with their sporting equipment.

The pictures have gone viral on several Russian websites, which have caused outrage in the West by praising the women for having sexy figures instead of “masculine” ones.

“Russian sportswomen are the best campaigners for our team in Sochi,” one sports site wrote. “We sincerely support our team and believe that its strength is not only in sports achievements.

“Our Russian Olympic team defies stereotypes that women in sport are just a heap of muscles and masculine shapes.”

The Sochi Games have been beset by controversy, from terrorism threats and claims the facilities wouldn’t be ready in time, to the alleged culling of the city’s stray dogs and Russian president Vladimir Putin’s anti-homosexual laws.
