Queen Elizabeth bans Kate Middleton from wearing short skirts in Australia

The Queen has reportedly ordered the Duchess of Cambridge to lengthen her hemlines on her upcoming tour of Australia.
Kate Middleton short skirts

Kate’s dress sense is famously demure, but she does enjoy showing off her slim pins, frequently wearing skirts several inches shorter than would normally be considered proper for someone in the royal family.

The public loves Kate’s style – anything she wears sells out within minutes – but the 87-year-old monarch has other ideas, according to the Mail on Sunday.

The Queen is reportedly planning a “significant regal makeover” for Kate, which will include longer hemlines and more diamonds and tiaras. Kate will also be encouraged to swap her high street favourites for couture pieces.

The Queen has tasked her personal dresser Angela Kelly with helping Kate prepare for the trip and has requested the Duchess take a selection of statement jewellery and gemstones from the monarch’s personal collection.

“Angela has been asked to start selecting jewels ahead of the trip,” a palace source told the newspaper.

“She knows most of the pieces in the Queen’s private collection. Her understanding is crucial because this trip will be about Kate appearing more Royal than ever – you can expect to see a lot more tiaras and the Queen will be watching closely.”

Kate will require up to four outfits a day for her three-and-a-half week Australian tour, and her favourite designers Alexander McQueen and Alice Temperley are already reportedly working on bespoke gowns and day dresses.

The 46-year-old actor was found by a friend in the bathroom of his Greenwich Village home. He reportedly died with a syringe in his arm.

Authorities found several bags in his apartment that were believed to contain heroin. Hoffman has spoken candidly over the years about his struggles with the drug.

He admitted in interviews last year to falling off the wagon after 23 years sober, and spent time in rehab to deal with a relapse.

The 2006 Best Actor Oscar winner for the biographical film Capote, most recently appeared as head gamesmaker Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and was best known for memorable characters in films including Boogie Nights, The Big Lebowski and Magnolia.

He also had a successful stage career, earning a Tony nomination for his turn in Death of a Salesman in 2012, and  spent time in Sydney during 2010 after being invited by the then Sydney Theatre Company directors, Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton, to direct the Sam Shepard play, True West.

His family, including his partner, costume designer Mimi O’Donnell, and their three children (Cooper, 10, Tallulah, seven and Willa, five) have released a statement, saying: “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone.”

Cate Blanchett drawn into Woody Allen abuse claims

Cate Blanchett and Woody Allen

Cate Blanchett and Woody Allen on the red carpet at the premiere of Blue Jasmine.

In an open letter to The New York Times and published online, Dylan Farrow, who was adopted by Allen during his relationship with actor Mia Farrow, alleged that the movie director sexually assaulted her when she was  seven years old.

Farrow ended her letter by singling out actors who have starred in Allen’s films. “What if it had been your child, Cate Blanchett? Louis CK? Alec Baldwin? What if it had been you, Emma Stone? Or you, Scarlett Johansson? You knew me when I was a little girl, Diane Keaton. Have you forgotten me?”

Blanchett, the star of Allen’s Blue Jasmine and Oscar-nominee, says she hopes the family can find peace.

“It’s obviously been a long and painful situation for the family and I hope they find some resolution and peace,” she said in a statement.

There is growing speculation that Cate Blanchett’s chance of winning an Oscar for her performance in Blue Jasmine could be jeopardised as a result of the renewed allegations.

The film was nominated for three Oscars – best actress (Cate Blanchett), best supporting actress (Sally Hawkins) and best original screenplay (Allen).

These nominations, as well as the lifetime achievement award bestowed by the Golden Globes last month, reportedly provoked Farrow into resurrecting her claims.

Allen has never been arrested or prosecuted over the decades-old allegation, despite a police investigation.

However, this is the first time Farrow has offered a detailed account of the abuse and the trauma she has suffered since, saying that she was terrified of being touched by men and developed an eating disorder.

Farrow has also lambasted Hollywood which she says made the torment worse by continuing to embrace Allen.

“All but a precious few (my heroes) turned a blind eye,” she wrote.

Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead in his New York apartment of a suspected drug overdose.

The 46-year-old father of three was found by his friend and screenwriter, David Bar Katz, at around 11:30am local time after the Capote actor missed an appointment to pick up the three children he fathered with longtime girlfriend Mimi O’Donnell.

The pair reportedly separated a few months ago and Philip was renting an apartment less than three blocks from the home the pair had shared since 2008.

Mimi, a costume designer, was reportedly seen in a inconsolable state as she entered his apartment. Police banned her, however, from entering the bathroom where he died.

Reports say the actor became increasingly troubled in the months leading to his death.

The New York Times reports Philip was found with a hypodermic needle still stuck in his arm and that heroin was found in the West Village apartment.

“It’s pretty apparent it was an overdose,” an official told the paper. “The syringe was in his arm.”

Police found five empty glassine envelopes in a garbage bin, two more under the bed and one on a table in the apartment. They also found a charred spoon in the kitchen sink.

Philip’s manager has released a statement from his grieving family, who have called his accidental death “a tragic and sudden loss”.

“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone,” the statement says.

“This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving.

“Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers.”

Police officials remain at the scene, where they continue their investigation.
