Schapelle Corby will celebrate freedom ‘with a joint’

Kerry Smith-Douglas made a bizarre appearance on The Today Show this morning to talk about her client Corby’s impending release.

When host Karl Stefanovic asked how Corby would celebrate freedom after nearly a decade in Bali’s notorious Kerobokan Prison, Smith-Douglas said she would probably “roll up a big marijuana joint the size of a cigar and kick back and enjoy herself”.

The comment left Stefanovic gobsmacked but after some nervous laughter he shot back, asking: “You haven’t been smoking this morning have you?”

Smith-Douglas replied: “My eyes are red, I know!”

Viewers reacted angrily to Smith-Douglas’ remarks, complaining they showed a complete lack of regard for the law while others voiced concerns the comments would jeopardise Corby’s parole hopes.

Smith-Douglas was later forced to deny she was serious, insisting she was trying to make light of the situation.

“It was a joke,” she told Fairfax Radio. “Don’t you have a sense of humour? Get a life. Loosen up. Enjoy a joke.”

Corby was convicted of smuggling 4.2kg of cannabis into Bali in 2005. She is serving a 20-year sentence but Indonesia’s Justice Minister Amir Syamsuddin said yesterday that he would make a decision about her parole application on Friday.

If Corby is granted parole, she will have to remain in Bali for two years before she is allowed to return to Australia.

She is tipped to receive offers of hundreds of thousands of dollars to tell her story, but Prime Minister Tony Abbott has warned her that she should not profit from her crime.

“I guess the old principle is that crime should not pay,” Abbott told 4BC radio.

Liz Hurley slams Bill Clinton affair claims

Liz Hurley and Bill Clinton.

Liz Hurley and Bill Clinton.

The model and businesswoman was embroiled in a sex scandal overnight when gossip website RadarOnline published an old recording of her ex-boyfriend Tom Sizemore claiming he had set her up with Clinton in 1998.

“Ludicrously silly stories about me and Bill Clinton,” Hurley tweeted this morning. “Totally untrue. In the hands of my lawyers. Yawn.”

This was swiftly followed by a statement from Hurley’s lawyers promising retribution against anyone who published the claims as fact.

“These allegations are completely false and defamatory,” the statement read. “They were also published without any evidence whatsoever. As such, our client is considering legal action against any parties who have published or otherwise repeated the allegations.”

In the tape, Sizemore claimed he introduced Hurley and Clinton at the height of Clinton’s presidency. He said Clinton sent a plane to fly Hurley to Washington DC, where they spent four nights together.

Sizemore has since retracted the claims, insisting he was in the grips of a drug addiction at the time the tape was made, and offered an apology to Hurley and Clinton.

“It was the rantings of a guy that has been well-chronicled as having a very severe drug problem,” Sizemore told the Huffington Post. “I was like a drunk saying I was going to be on the Challenger next week … my perceptions were not the greatest!”

‘I wish I had breast cancer’ campaign causes outrage

Cancer envy. It's a term you have probably never heard before but it is at the centre of a maelstrom that has erupted in response to a UK advertising campaign.
Pancreatic cancer campaign

The UK’s first awareness advertising campaign for pancreatic cancer will be shown in London tube stations and major newspapers.

‘I wish I had breast cancer’ is the kicker in a Pancreatic cancer charity’s new campaign to raise awareness for one of the most fatal forms of the disease.

The posters and television ad feature confronting images of real pancreatic cancer patients who say ‘I wish I had testicular cancer’ or ‘I wish I had breast cancer’ as information about symptoms and survival rates appears on the screen.

Pancreatic cancer has a five-year survival rate of just three per cent – compared to 85 per cent of breast cancer patients and 97 per cent of men with testicular cancer.

The campaign has sparked outrage and condemnation as critics call it ‘horribly insensitive’ and ‘repugnant’.

Breakthough Breast Cancer’s Chief Executive, Chris Askew, responded saying “we must avoid a competition in cancer”.

“We strongly dispute any message which suggests that one type of cancer is preferable to another,” he said.

“We believe Pancreatic Cancer Action’s recent campaign does just this. I’ve yet to meet a man or woman with breast cancer who would consider themselves in any way fortunate to have received a diagnosis.”

But Ali Stunt, the founder of Pancreatic Cancer Action and herself diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2007, has released a combative blog post, defending the ‘hard-hitting’ campaign.

She says: “When I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer age 41 in 2007 and started to understand the gravity of the disease, only a 3 per cent chance of survival and an average life expectancy of just months, I did feel at times that I wish I had a cancer that would give much better chance of survival.”

Stunt writes about a call she received from a friend who was suffering from breast cancer.

“She was telling me how grueling [sic] her treatment was and how difficult it was to cope with the diagnosis. While I was sympathetic and empathetic, I did find it very hard to listen to her tell me about how tough it was and that the side effects of her treatment were awful (which they were).

“I couldn’t help but think every now and then, ‘it’s alright for you, you have an 85% chance that you will still be here in five years time – while my odds are only 3 per cent.’ Cancer envy: I’d never have thought I would be envious of anyone with breast cancer, but I was.”

Security probe after royal documents left on flight

Security probe after royal documents left on flight

Picture: Getty

Security concerns have been raised after a royal protection officer, who accompanied the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince George to the Caribbean, left important documents on a commercial flight.

Catherine, who took six-month-old Prince George on his first overseas trip last week, flew from Gatwick to St Lucia on a British Airways flight, before boarding a private plane to Mustique.

A police officer accompanying them left a file, thought to be related to security, on the British Airways plane it has now emerged.

The file was promptly returned by staff, but has raised serious security concerns for the Duchess and her son.

“On 25 January a Metropolitan Police Service officer left some documents on a plane,” a Scotland Yard spokesman said today.

“The documents were returned to the officer within hours by airline staff.

“The papers didn’t contain any classified documents and the circumstances of the loss are currently being looked into.”

Clarence House refused to comment on the security breach with a spokeswoman saying: “We don’t make any comment on security matters”.

Catherine and Prince George took the flight with Catherine’s brother James Middleton and royal bodyguards.

They flew to the private island to celebrate their mother Carole’s 59th birthday and were joined by their father Michael and sister Pippa.

The family rented a four bedroom villa, costing more than $15,500 a week, which comes with a butler, chef, housekeeper and gardener, as well as a lush tropical garden.

Prince William stayed behind to continue studying for his 10 week agricultural course at Cambridge University.

Miranda’s family pleads with her to come home

Miranda Kerr awaits family exposé alone

Miranda Kerr’s family has used a very public platform to make an emotional plea to their daughter and her son, Flynn, to come home after not seeing the two of them in over a year.

The Aussie model’s mother Therese, father John, nanna Ann and brother Matthew have used ABC1’s documentary drama series Family Confidential, which they star in, to appeal to the estranged supermodel, giving a rare glimpse into the Kerr family dynamics.

“Miranda’s life is so different now [and] she’s surrounded by yes people all the time. It’s so important for me to be real, to be true, to be who she needs me to be,” Therese told ABC1.

Woman’s Day reported in December last year that all was not well within the Kerr family after Miranda, 30, snubbed Christmas with her family after a nasty falling out with her mother.

The mother and daughter relationship fell on hard times after the ex-David Jones catwalk model decided to remove her mother from Kora Organics, the skincare company that Therese Kerr helped her establish.

Despite the mother-daughter feud, it was Miranda’s father John who was the most candid during filming, revealing his wish that his daughter hadn’t married a movie star and had lived a simpler life.

“After what I know now I would rather she did just marry a nobody because you really can’t get that family time by yourself,” he said.

“I just hope Flynn grows up and he wants to be with his nan and pop.

“What I’d really like to do as a grandad now is teach Flynn how to milk a cow, how to ride a horse, teach him all them [sic] country things.”

Miranda’s grandmother Ann echoed John’s sentiments, adding that she just wants to spend some time with her three-year-old great-grandson.

“I miss the baby and I think he’s missing out on family, that closeness that we have always had,” she said.

“It’s very nice where they are but nothing like Australia, nothing and I think hopefully Flynn might end up here. We just keep our fingers crossed.”

But for Miranda’s brother Matthew – he just wants his sister back in his life.

“I’d like to spend more one-on-one time instead of with an entourage of people who we don’t really know. I love her to death, I just want to see her more.”
