Schapelle Corby waiting in ‘release room’

Schapelle Corby

Schapelle Corby

Pulling up to the prison on a motorbike driven by her husband Wayan, Mercedes was mobbed by the Australian media contingent which has been lying in wait for three days.

Mercedes made no comment as she pushed her way through the media to enter the prison. but gave a short statement on her way out two hours later.

“We’ve been waiting for almost a year-and-a-half,” Mercedes said. “She’s been eligible for parole for almost a-year-and-a-half. Please just give us privacy.”

Other inmates at Kerobokan have told reporters Schapelle is waiting alone in the prison’s “release room”.

It is unclear if the paperwork to authorise her parole will be signed today, but it is a possibility.

As speculation Schapelle’s release is imminent grows, more media are arriving at the prison, with TV anchor Melissa Doyle arriving earlier and Karl Stefanovic on his way.

A press conference by Indonesian authorities which is expected to announce whether Australia’s most famous prisoner has been granted parole, has been pushed back to later this afternoon, Bali time. It was initially expected to take place at 5.30pm AEDT, but now appears to be happening at least an hour later.

If Schapelle is not granted parole this afternoon, her push for freedom will be delayed by at least another two days as the system grinds to a halt over the weekend.

The Olympics is not only an exhibition of the best athletes in the world – in the past it has been a display of some of the worst outfits as well.

Figure skating champions are long-time sufferers for their sport when it comes to uniforms, but speed skating is not far behind.

And although Australia has been considered a ‘late bloomer’ in our winter Olympics medals-count, our fashion credentials are on par with the rest.

Check out some of the most shocking sartorial moments from Games gone by.

Cher wasn’t invited to her son’s wedding

Cher wasn’t invited to her son's wedding

Picture: Getty

Cher’s youngest son Elijah Blue Allman has eloped with his fiancee, Marieangela ‘Angie’ King, after his mother shunned the pair’s engagement.

Elijah, 37, says he suggested to Angie that they elope after his megastar mum failed to acknowledge or congratulate the couple.

“I wasn’t going to wait for anyone’s approval and congratulations just like I’ve never waited for any of that my whole life,” he told the UK’s Daily Mail.

“The way I eloped with my wife is the same way I’ve done everything I’ve ever done. I don’t know any other way and we knew it was the right time.”

Elijah, who is Cher’s only son with her second husband Gregg Allman, has battled through some tough times recently.

He has battled a heroin addiction following his rock star days as a member of Deadsy, watched his sister Chastity become his brother Chaz and almost died after contracting Lyme disease.

He says when it comes to his family, he has always felt like an outcast.

“I’ve always been the black sheep of my family. The reason being we just have different value systems and we just have a different mentality and that clashes a lot. We have lots of ups and downs and right now isn’t the best time,” he says.

“Had we been getting on a little bit better along maybe it would have been different.”

Despite not having his mother’s blessing, Elijah says other members of his family are happy for him.

“She knows that I’m married, my entire family knows I’m married. Some have congratulated me, some haven’t. My father’s side of the family is very happy for us and is very excited,” he says.

Characteristically rebellious Elijah “eloped in a real Romeo and Juliet fashion”.

“We got married in front of the fireplace in our new house, we kind of christened it. Just a few friends came, one of them was my good friend, the rapper Mickey Avalon,” he says.

“We wanted something that was sacred and private. This was something that was for me and my girl.”

It seems that Cher isn’t looking to reconcile with her son any time soon, after not inviting the couple to Christmas at her Malibu home.

While Cher hasn’t commented on her and Elijah’s troubled relationship, he thinks his mother might be finding it difficult to give up her son to another woman.

“Those feelings come up for any mother that their son’s being lost to another woman, no matter who that woman is,” he says.

“It’s a shame because you’re hoping at the end it’s all going to come together.”

Julianne Moore’s daughter prefers her airbrushed

Julianne Moore’s daughter prefers her airbrushed

Julianne, 53, said her 11-year-old daughter Liv cheekily told her what she really thinks about her mum being featured in glossy magazines.

“Sometimes a magazine wants to see my actual skin, and other times they’ll airbrush [the freckles] out. I don’t care either way,” she told Redbook magazine.

“[But] once my daughter saw me on a cover where I had no freckles and said, ‘That doesn’t look like you at all!’ And then – just like a kid – ‘I like you better without them.’ Thanks!”

The mum of two has previously revealed that she was terribly self-conscious of her freckles growing up, but began to appreciate her skin as she got older.

Her complexion also contributes to her youthful looks, with the actress never having had Botox or plastic surgery and revealing she has moisturized with sunscreen since the age of 23.

And although the actress rarely has an off beauty day she has issues with the relentless US paparazzi snapping pictures of celebrities when they leave the house barefaced.

“I want people to look natural and normal, and I’m all for showing that, but I don’t like when magazines show pictures of someone looking terrible,” she said.

“We all have our moments when we look awful. My gosh!”

Gittany ‘deserves life’ for balcony death

Simon Gittany with his girlfriend Rachelle Louise.

Simon Gittany with his new girlfriend Rachelle Louise.

Senior prosecutor Mark Tedeschi described Gittany – who threw his fiancée Lisa Harnum off the balcony of their luxury Sydney apartment – as a “cold” and “calculated” killer.

Tedeschi recommended Gittany be locked up for a minimum of 20 years without parole because his complete “lack of remorse” proved he could not be rehabilitated.

Defence barrister Philip Strickland disagreed, saying Gittany was unlikely to reoffend and that his supportive family would increase his chances of rehabilitation.

The sentencing hearing took a surprising turn yesterday when the Crown introduced a new witness, a friend of Harnum’s who testified that Gittany “frequently” threatened Harnum with death if she left him.

The woman, who knew Harnum from beauty college and had previously been in an abusive relationship, only came forward after the prosecution closed its case last year.

The new witness cried as she recounted daily death threats made against Harnum, who allegedly feared Gittany would poison her food and if he killed her, “make it look like suicide”.

Strickland condemned the claims as “fabricated”, while Gittany mouthed “seriously” and shook his head as the evidence was revealed.

In earlier drama, Gittany’s current girlfriend Rachelle Louise led a silent protest of his friends and family, wielding various placards proclaiming his innocence.

They included signs saying “How do you render some 1 unconscious in less than 65 secs without any trauma on the body?” and “Why was Lisa still holding her handbag and how if she was unconscious?”

Justice Lucy McCallum said she anticipated Gittany’s sentence would be handed down on February 11.
