Cowan denies killing Daniel Morcombe

Daniel Morcombe

Daniel Morcombe

Brett Peter Cowan, 44, appeared in Brisbane Supreme Court this morning. He appeared calm and relaxed as he formally entered a plea of “not guilty” to charges of murder, indecent treatment of a child under 16 and unlawfully interfering with a corpse.

Daniel’s parents Bruce and Denise, twin Bradley and older brother Dean were in court to hear Cowan’s plea but left shortly afterwards, barely holding back tears.

The family were met by a large media contingent outside the court and Bruce stopped to thank everyone who has helped investigate Daniel’s murder.

“Ten years, two months and three days we find ourselves here, so it’s been a long grind,” he said.

“But we certainly thank the media, police, the SES and the community for getting us to this point and we’ll see what the next few weeks unfold.”

The first day of the trial was devoted to empanelling the 12 jurors and three reserve jurors. The first of the evidence is not expected to be heard until tomorrow.

Daniel was 13 years old when he disappeared from a Sunshine Coast bus stop on his way to buy Christmas presents for his family.

In August 2011, Cowan – a father of three – was charged with his abduction and murder and eight days later, Daniel’s remains were uncovered.

Gittany’s girlfriend speaks: He’s innocent

Simon Gittany with his girlfriend Rachelle Louise.

Simon Gittany with his new girlfriend Rachelle Louise.

Senior prosecutor Mark Tedeschi described Gittany – who threw his fiancée Lisa Harnum off the balcony of their luxury Sydney apartment – as a “cold” and “calculated” killer.

Tedeschi recommended Gittany be locked up for a minimum of 20 years without parole because his complete “lack of remorse” proved he could not be rehabilitated.

Defence barrister Philip Strickland disagreed, saying Gittany was unlikely to reoffend and that his supportive family would increase his chances of rehabilitation.

The sentencing hearing took a surprising turn yesterday when the Crown introduced a new witness, a friend of Harnum’s who testified that Gittany “frequently” threatened Harnum with death if she left him.

The woman, who knew Harnum from beauty college and had previously been in an abusive relationship, only came forward after the prosecution closed its case last year.

The new witness cried as she recounted daily death threats made against Harnum, who allegedly feared Gittany would poison her food and if he killed her, “make it look like suicide”.

Strickland condemned the claims as “fabricated”, while Gittany mouthed “seriously” and shook his head as the evidence was revealed.

In earlier drama, Gittany’s current girlfriend Rachelle Louise led a silent protest of his friends and family, wielding various placards proclaiming his innocence.

They included signs saying “How do you render some 1 unconscious in less than 65 secs without any trauma on the body?” and “Why was Lisa still holding her handbag and how if she was unconscious?”

Justice Lucy McCallum said she anticipated Gittany’s sentence would be handed down on February 11.

A lot has changed since Schapelle Corby was sent to Kerobokan Prison in 2004.

These events, which include new inventions that we now take for granted and the tenures of leaders who have come and gone, demonstrate just how much time Schapelle has lost.

From the phenomenon of the iPhone to the reign of Google to the entire lifespan of a papacy and three Labor Prime Ministers, the last decade has seen enormous change.

All the while Schapelle Corby has languished in prison with limited connection to the outside world.

Inside Prince William and Kate Middleton’s ski getaway

We take you inside the remote Canadian ski lodge where William and Kate enjoyed one of their most romantic holidays ever.
Prince William and Kate Middleton skii

Looking around at the idyllic snowy peaks it’s easy to see what attracted Kate Middleton and Prince William to the stunning Banff National Park.

In April 2011, the then newlywed Wills and Kate trekked to one of Canada’s remote corners for some privacy and quality time together post-nuptials. The pair found themselves at the rural Skoki lodge which is located off the grid in the Western wilderness of Alberta.

While one may assume that accommodation bereft of running water, electricity and flushing toilets may not be fit for a future King, the down-to-earth royal couple reportedly loved the lodge.

Away from the prying eyes of the media that besieged Wills and Kate at the time of their wedding the pair finally got a chance to relax in the alpine environment and sources say they were fond of taking treks out in cool mountain air.

With only a handful of staff, the lodge’s cluster of cosy cabins are off the beaten track with supplies delivered by skidoo.

The royal guests were apparently delighted by the fact that one of the first people to sign the visitors’ book soon after the Lodge opened in 1931 was Lady Jean Rankin, The Queen Mother’s lady in waiting, who came on honeymoon for three days and ended up staying for three weeks.

Here’s a peak at the loved-up couples holiday location.

William and Kate enjoyed one of their most romantic holidays ever at the remote Skoki resort.

Skoki’s lodge is located in the pristine Rockies; an area often nicknamed “Canada’s Eighth Wonder of the World”.

The couple enjoyed nights in the lounge with other guests.

The accommodation is very basic, with no running water or electricity.

William and Kate spent time hiking the resort’s spectacular grounds.

The royal couple reportedly enjoyed the back-to-nature experience taking long walks and playing board games during the visit to the Riverside Cabin and even ate at communal tables with other guests.

Recording his experience in the visitor’s log book, William wrote: “Fantastic scenery and delicious food. Thank you.”

It was not the first skiing vacation for the royals; In 2008 Prince William and then girlfriend Kate Middleton holidayed in Klosters, Switzerland.

Kate’s athletic and outdoorsy spirit is apparently one of the reasons William was initially attracted to his wife.

The pair had just married months prior to their Canadian escape and used the time in the wilderness to relax and unwind in the fresh mountain air.

The Duke and Duchess toured Canada in July, just months after their holiday there. Here they wave to the crowds at Calgary airport.

The down-to-earth pair wore matching cowboy hats as they watched the Calgary Stampede Parade in Calgary, Canada.

Schapelle: From prison hellhole to world-class resort

How Schapelle celebrated her freedom

After signing parole papers, Schapelle went straight to the Sentosa Luxury Villas in Seminyak.

Schapelle Corby is spending her first hours of freedom in world-class luxury after checking into a secluded five-star resort with a private pool, spa and restaurant run by Luke Mangan.

In just a matter of hours, Schapelle has gone from her prison hellhole to private villa.

She was seen checking into the Sentosa Luxury Villas in Seminyak with a news crew and veteran current affairs host Mike Willesee.

A large media pack, including photographers on scooters, followed the recently released 36-year-old, who has spent the past nine years behind bars.

Schapelle was reportedly “traumatised” by the intesnse media scrum who followed her throughout her release.

“We asked her about her condition and she once cried, saying she’s still in trauma over the journalists,” Agung Bagus Kusimantara, head of the Intelligence Section in Denpasar’s Prosecutions Office said.

Following her release Schapelle was expected to live with her sister Mercedes, who has reportedly split from her husband Wayan Widyartha. The couples’ separation has raised questions about whether Schapelle will live at the Kuta beach compound at all.

It is understood the Corby family has bought at least one other Bali property in recent times.

The Bali Corrections Board has stated that her parole conditions are not affected by where she lives, as long as she can attend her monthly inspections dressed “respectfully”.

While Wayan, a Balinese local, is her official guarantor, her sister Mercedes will primarily care for her.

Schapelle telemovie a ratings flop

Krew Boylan playing Corby in Channel Nine's Schapelle.

Changing the game plan at the last minute may have undermined the ratings success of Schapelle, which aired last night instead of tonight as originally planned.

Nine decided on Friday to bring the broadcast forward to Sunday night and take advantage of intense public interest in Schapelle Corby’s imminent release from Bali’s Kerobakan Prison.

However, the ratings results were far below what the network might have hoped for, only managing 1.022 million viewers with a peak audience of 1.39 million.

Schapelle was up against the first of a two-part mini-series INXS – Never Tear Us Apart, the story of rock superstar Michael Hutchence and the band INXS and their rise to fame, which claimed 1.97 million viewers, a whopping 37.6 per cent share of the metropolitan audience.

Channel Seven ‘pays $3m’ for Corby exclusive

The exclusive interview will be conducted by senior reporter Mike Willesee and will air on the network’s Sunday Night.

Willesee is understood to have flown into Bali in secret on Thursday and stayed away from Kerobokan Prison and other media hotspots to avoid attracting suspicion Seven had bought the rights to the story.

He and a film crew were spotted travelling in a van behind Schapelle’s as she left prison, and followed her to the prosecutions office and the corrections office.

Willesee and the crew then accompanied Schapelle and her family to the high security Bali villa where they will reportedly record the interview.

The deal was conducted in the utmost secrecy, with even other senior network reporters knowing nothing about it.

As rumours of the arrangement broke in Bali the feeling on the ground was that Seven were too hasty in their negotiations – the dire ratings for Channel Nine’s Schapelle telemovie suggests public interest is not at the level anticipated by broadcasters. Had Seven waited another few days, they might have been able to secure the story at a much lower cost.

The value of the exclusive is also likely to decline after the public backlash to Schapelle’s appalling treatment by the media scrum. Schapelle was reportedly in tears after her brutal treatment by photographers and cameramen outside the prison, who nearly knocked her over as they jostled to get that valuable first photo of her walking free.

The madness on the ground horrified even veteran reporters, many of whom – including Channel Nine’s Karl Stefanovic – refused to join the crush, stepping back to try to allow Schapelle to get through unharmed.

Schapelle Corby will reportedly design swimwear for her brother-in-law's Kuta surf shop.

The store, Kuta Board Room, is owned by Schapelle’s brother-in-law, Wayan Widyartha.

A small workshop on the first floor of the squat building will likely be Schapelle’s design studio – its windows onto the street below blocked from prying eyes by strategically-positioned surf posters.

The shop is located in the heaving heart of Kuta – Bali’s most popular tourist haunt.

Within spitting distance of the famous Bemo Corner and down the road from the now empty block on which the Sari Club used to stand before it was razed in the 2002 Bali bombings, the Kuta Board Room stocks surfboards and a small range of swimwear.

When The Weekly visited the shop yesterday, a shop assistant showed off the store’s “hand-designed” bikinis.

One range, bearing a label that proudly proclaimed “Australian Designed, Made In Bali”, was retailing for 95,000 rupiah (approximately $95).

Under the terms of her parole, Schapelle must live with her sister Mercedes and brother-in-law, Wayan, an Indonesian national.

Mercedes’ compound is located barely 50 metres down the street and around the corner from her husband’s surf shop.
