Why I love her: Malcolm Turnbull on wife Lucy

Her smile, her laugh, her zest for life. Malcolm Turnbull writes about the moment he fell in love with his wife.
Malcolm Turnball, federal Minister for communication and his wife Lucy.

It was her smile that entranced me. It was so open, so happy, so refreshingly sane, at once mischievously funny and worldly wise and, above all, full of love.

She was 19 and I was 23. Our first encounter was not across a crowded room, or on a dance floor, but in the otherwise thoroughly unromantic environment of her father’s legal chambers where she was working over the summer holidays.

It was January 1978 and I had been sent by The Bulletin to interview the Honourable (and frighteningly formidable) Thomas Eyre Forrest Hughes QC.

I would like to think she was as smitten with me as I was with her, but I suspect the arrival of any sentient being vaguely her own age was a pleasant distraction from cross-referencing Tom’s hundreds of dusty volumes of law reports.

We quickly became best friends and have stayed that way. She makes me laugh. We have always found each other amusing.

I was so in love and so worried I would lose her that I asked her to marry me soon after we met. She said we should wait until we grew up. Thankfully, we didn’t (it is not entirely clear that men ever grow up, of course) and we were married two years later, in 1980.

It is almost impossible to be sad in Lucy’s company. She is hardly ever down; she is as bouncy, as optimistic today as she was when I met her. Lucy is one of those few people who light up every room she enters.

And bouncy is the right word. I vividly recall coming back to Australia from the UK, where I was studying, and being met by Lucy at the airport. She was so excited to see me, she was jumping up and down – prouncing (bouncing and prancing at the same time) – and then I started jumping up and down, and then we were both jumping up and down hugging each other until we realised how crazy we looked and fell about laughing.

Both our respective sets of parents had been divorced and we were determined not to be. Despite very busy, often distracting lives, we have always tried to make lots of time to be with each other.

I think this has been a very wise move – it is so easy between the demands of children and career to lose any time for each other, to lose the space in which the romance that brought you together in the first place can continue to thrive.

Yet, truthfully, we have been so lucky in so many ways. To meet the love of your life at all, let alone at such a young age, is such a blessing.

Over the years, we have grown together. It is almost impossible to imagine, let alone remember, what it was like not to be together, so much so that I have a much clearer sense of “Lucy and me” than I do of “me”.

Barbie has become the oldest woman to grace the cover of Sport Illustrated’s Swimsuit Edition.

At 55, the iconic doll is some three decades older than the average cover model, not that you can tell – an unchanging figure is a definite perk of being crafted entirely out of plastic.

Mattel and Sport Illustrated teamed up to create the souvenir cover to celebrate the release of the 50th issue of the magazine’s annual swimwear special next week.

Barbie – dressed in a replica of the swimsuit the first-ever doll wore when she was launched in 1959 – will appear in a four-page feature in the upcoming magazine and a special Sports Illustrated Barbie will also be sold in the US and online.

Ashton and Mila engagement ‘imminent’ friend says

Ashton and Mila engagement “imminent” friend says

While Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis celebrated his 36th birthday recently, it looks like another celebration is just around the corner!

A close friend of the couple say they’re preparing to tie the knot sooner rather than later.

“They talk about getting married and having kids. An engagement is imminent,” the friend told US Weekly.

Mila threw Ashton a surprise party on Saturday night, renting out his favourite Hollywood restaurant, La Poubelle, for his birthday.

Friends say laid-back celebration is certainly a change from Ashton’s usual party-loving ways.

“They had been planning it for a while. Ashton didn’t want a huge thing but they got a good group together,” the friend said.

“He’s certainly changed from how he used to like to party years ago. This was more of a wholesome situation. They had a great time.”

Eyewitnesses at the restaurant say the former That ’70s Show co-stars, who have been together for two years, “looked romantic together”.

The small group enjoyed a night of good company as they feasted on steak, lobster, quail and ribs while knocking back a few cocktails.

“Mila gets along great with all of his friends. She’s like part of the crew,” the friend said.

Before dating Mila, Ashton was married to Demi Moore. The pair finalised their divorce in November after a two-year legal battle.

Lara Bingle finds new home in New York

Lara Bingle finds new home in New York

Sam and Lara Bundle up in the Big Apple as temperatures hit -4. Picture: Splash.

After revealing to Woman’s Day that she was “quitting Sydney”, it looks like Lara Bingle has found a new home.

The bikini model is making good use of her coat collection as she bundles up and starts a new life in the Big Apple with her beau, actor Sam Worthington, 37.

The 26-year-old celebrity, who made a name for herself as a bikini-clad beauty in her “Where the bloody hell are you?” tourism campaign for Australia in 2006, has now left her homeland once and for all.

In a conversation on Instagram between Lara and New York-based photographer Ben Watts, the brother of actress Naomi Watts, the blonde beauty confirmed the move.

When Ben asked, “When are we shooting…Your in New York City?”, Lara exclaimed, “I’m here to stay! Catch up this week?”

In January, Lara revealed she was fed up with her lack of privacy in Australia.

“Sydney’s my home but I don’t like it,” she confided exclusively to a Woman’s Day photographer. “I can’t even go to the supermarket without getting papped [snapped by paparazzi]. I don’t like the attention.”

Her Aussie boyfriend of five months agrees.

“Sam hates it! We don’t get any peace,” Lara said.

Lara revealed that the pair seem to get papped “everywhere they go”, so we aren’t sure if her new digs will deter paparazzi attention.

Biggest Loser winner justifies weight loss

Biggest Loser winner justifies weight loss

She shocked the world and the trainers when US Biggest Loser winner Rachel Frederickson revealed her 70.3 kilo weight loss recently.

Now the 24-year-old has admitted she may have taken things a little too far.

“Maybe I was a little too enthusiastic in my training to get to the finale,” she revealed to People.

Rachel gained criticism over her weight and the nature of the show when she revealed her final weight loss on the NBC’s show’s finale last week.

The 5’4” competitor lost 70.3 kilos, going from 117.9 kilos to 47 kilos in a matter of months, and her record-breaking weight loss saw her take out the competition and the $US250,000 prize.

The weight loss of more than half of her body weight put her slightly below the healthy body mass index, according to the National Institute of Health, and sparked rumours of an eating disorder.

When asked “point blank” by the mag if she has an eating disorder, Rachel replied, “I am very, very healthy.”

While the show’s executive producer David Bloom said all the contestants were monitored throughout the seven-and-a-half months on the show and passed all medical tests, the trainers say they were shocked by her sudden weight loss.

“The first thing that went through my mind was, ‘That’s just too much’,” Rachel’s trainer, Dolvett Quince told the magazine.

Fellow trainers Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper were also visibly shocked during Rachel’s big reveal on the show’s finale.

The show’s producers are now considering making some “small but significant tweaks” to the series’ production including more check-ins and support following the finale.

“There might be more focus on what happens to the winner after they are supposedly done with the show,” a source close to the series told E! News.

Celebrities attend the 2014 Oscar luncheon

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hosted its annual luncheon for Academy Award nominees on Monday in LA.
Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Amy Adams, Meryl Streep

More than 150 Oscar nominees descended upon the Beverly Hills Hilton in California on Monday to celebrate the joy of “just being nominated” at the Academy Awards annual nominee luncheon.

The guest list was packed full of stars including Cate Blanchett, Leonardo DiCaprio, Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Matthew McConaughey just to rattle off a few.

In a deliberate democratic move, the event encourages mingling between nominees by seating the obscure first-time nominees alongside the most revered directors and famous faces.

Each nominee for best director was also on the guest list, including Alfonso Cuaron, Steve McQueen, Alexander Payne, David O. Russell and Martin Scorsese.

With less than three weeks until the 86th Academy Awards, the race for best picture remains a three-way contest between American Hustle, Gravity and 12 Years a Slave all vying for the Oscar.

Academy members will cast their Oscar votes Feb. 14-25.

The Oscars luncheon sees first time nominees rub shoulders with industry legends.

Cate Blanchett shimmered in silver on the red carpet. The actress is up for a golden statue for her leading role in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.

First time Oscar nominee Jared Leto has won praise for his supporting role as a transgender woman who forms an unlikely friendship with a homophobic straight man in Dallas Buyers Club.

It’s hard to believe that The Wolf of Wall Street star Leonardo DiCaprio is yet to get his hands on a golden statue. Many believe this will be the talented actor’s year to take out the Best Actor nod.

12 Years a Slave star Lupita Nyong’o has become a firm fashion favourite at every red carpet event and this appearance was no exception.

Alan Partridge creator Coogan is nominated for two awards – Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture for his work on heartbreaking drama, Philomena.

Julie Delpy is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for Before Midnight which she co-wrote with Ethan Hawke.

Meryl Streep has received her 18th Oscar nomination for best actress for August: Osage County.

Jonah Hill is up for his second Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in The Wolf of Wall Street.

Martin Scorsese is nominated for a Best Director Oscar for the most talked about film of the year, The Wolf of Wall Street.

Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves smile for the cameras inside the event. McConaughey is nominated for Best Actor for his leading role in Dallas Buyers Club.

Bradley Cooper is nominated for his supporting role in American Hustle.

Steve McQueen is on course to become the first black winner of the best director Oscar after the nominations for the 86th Academy awards.

Sandra Bullock is nominated for her leading role in Gravity. Critics believe the Best Actress in a Leading Role award is a two-horse race with Bullock and Cate Blanchett firm favourites to take out the award.

Sandra Bullock and Pharrell Williams pose for a picture inside the event. Three-time Grammy winner, Pharrell is up for Best Original song for his jam Happy, which her produced for the animated film Despicable Me 2.

Kristen Bell performed songs from animated film Frozen at the event.

American Hustle actress Amy Adams is the only nominee in her Best Actress in a Leading Role category that has not previously won an Oscar. She faces off against Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Dame Judi Dench and multiple Oscar winner, Meryl Streep.

Each nominee is called to the stage as their nomination is read to the crowd.

Curvy Aussie model lands major fashion deal

The Weekly has obtained an exclusive skinny about the 23-year-old’s signing and her hopes of what impact the deal might have on the wider fashion community.

Even over the phone you can hear that Georgina, or Geo as she has been nicknamed since childhood, is smiling. Beaming even. Despite the temperature reading a cool -8 degrees Celsius outside her New York apartment you get the sense that nothing is going to chill the curvaceous model’s excitement about her new career move.

“It’s for sure my most exciting job yet. When I found out I had to keep it quiet for a while but it was hard because I just wanted to celebrate” said Burke.

Torrid, which carries sizes 12-28 and boasts 236 retailers worldwide, services a substantial chunk of the US retail market with a reported 68 per cent of American women wearing above a size 12. Tall and voluptuous with honey blonde hair and cheek bones sharp enough to slice meat on, it’s not hard to see why the retail giant picked Burke to become their first ever official face.

“In the plus-size world, there are not a ton of models and what sometimes happens is you see the same girl over and over. We wanted to find someone newer and fresher that we could make our own,” said Liz Munoz, the brand’s senior vice president of product development.

Georgina appears in the label’s new swimwear campaign and her buxom body and bountiful curves are a refreshing sight from the often underweight norms of the fashion industry. In her first major shoot for the brand Geo’s ample figure is perfectly poured into the garments with her bronzed size 16 frame radiating confidence.

Georgina giggles down the line when complimented on her stunning swimwear shots and reveals that selective hearing is one tool she employs to help embrace her gorgeous girl curves.

“I never care too much about the negative things people have to say. I’ve always been a pretty confident person and I’m very comfortable with my body”, she says.

Geo was discovered as a teen and then encouraged by her Australian agent and director of Bella Models in Sydney, Chelsea Bonner, to make the move to New York three years ago to pursue her modelling career. Bonner is equally excited about her prodigy’s signing and says it demonstrates a huge step forward for the fashion industry. Bonner hopes the deal will open up other brands to the idea of using women beyond a sample size to front major labels.

“Torrid wanted to make a point of signing a model who their customers could relate to- someone with confidence. Geo is that truly confident curvy girl!” says Bonner.

While rare, the Torrid signing isn’t without precedent. Of late, voluptuous models such as Kate Upton, Tara Lynn and Aussie supermodel Robyn Lawley have all graced the covers of some major style bibles like Vogue Italia, Elle France and even the coveted CR Fashion Book, the brain child of former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld.

Georgina says that her new venture with Torrid has been met with overwhelming positivity and believes this reflects mainstream society’s hunger for more size diversity in fashion campaigns.

“It might sound silly but since this went public I have been getting so many messages from people on social media. People are like ‘Finally a model that is actually curvy’ which means people are happy to see bigger models working for the labels they love”.

Geo says that while living and working in New York is already a dream come true, she really hopes that now she can use this career move as a stepping stone to help inspire other women to love themselves.

“I want women to embrace their bodies and I’m happy to be seen as a confident healthy role model to help them do it.”

Man jailed for trying to kill Prince Harry

The 31-year-old Brit, a Muslim convert who officially changed his name by to Ashraf Islam in 2010, handed himself in to the police the day after Drummer Lee Rigby was brutally killed in south-east London in May last year saying he intended to kill Prince Harry because the royal “had blood on his hands”.

Even though Islam didn’t act upon his plans and they were found to be “vague and unlikely to succeed” Judge Richard McGregor-Johnson deemed him a risk to the public and sent him to prison for three years.  Islam had carried out “extensive research” the Judge said and “had given the matter considerable thought”. The plot involved Islam using a low-calibre pistol at close range.

“I accept that there is nothing here that could be described as professional plans,” the Judge said, adding that he had considered a longer sentence.

The defense lawyer claimed her client had a “personality disorder”.
