Adelaide designer, 23, hits Oscars red carpet

It's a long way from Adelaide to LA, but one of fashion designer Paul Vasileff's stunning creations made the journey for a very special occasion today – the 86th annual Academy Awards.

It’s a long way from Adelaide to LA, but one of fashion designer Paul Vasileff’s stunning creations made the journey for a very special occasion today – the 86th annual Academy Awards.

Vasileff, the founder of Aussie couture label Paolo Sebastian, dressed E! News presenter Giuliana Rancic – host of the channel’s red carpet special – for Hollywood’s night of nights, one of his biggest commissions yet.

The ethereal gown Rancic chose featured a bodice crafted from crystal-embellished lace atop invisible tulle to give the illusion the gems were floating on the skin. Its full skirt was made from more than 50 metres of French tulle.

“I didn’t know if she would wear one of our gowns but I had a feeling if she did it would be that one,” Vasileff said.

“It’s been one of my life goals to have one of my designs on the Oscars red carpet. It’s a huge honour, I feel so lucky to have been chosen.”

Cate Blanchett has won the Oscar for best actress and become the first Australian to win two Academy Awards for acting.

She received the award for her role in Blue Valentine and was up against international stars Sandra Bullock and Amy Adams.

“There is so much talent in Australia,” Blanchett said at the end of her speech.

Matthew McConaughey took out the best actor award from his first Academy Award nomination for The Dallas Buyers Club, leaving Leonardo Oscar-less for the fifth time round.

12 Years A Slave has been awarded the all-important best picture award.

But it has been a big day for Aussies in Hollywood, with Catherine Martin also breaking records. She became the most successful Australian at the Academy Awards ever, winning Oscars for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design for eye-feast spectacular, The Great Gatsby.

“I have a few words tucked into my bra. It’s a very Australian thing to do,” Catherine said during her acceptance speech.

“It’s where you keep your tissues.”

The incredibly talented and relative newbie, Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o, took out the best supporting actress role for her moving portrayal as a slave in 12 Years A Slave.

Cate the Great! Blanchett triumphs at Oscars

Cate Blanchett has won her second Academy Award, taking home the coveted best actress prize for her performance in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine.

Cate, 44, who looked stunning in a heavily-embellished Armani gown, triumphed in a tough category, beating Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Amy Adams (American Hustle), Judi Dench (Philomena) and veteran Meryl Streep (August: Osage County).

“This award means a great deal in a year of extraordinary performances by women,” she said in her acceptance speech. “This proves movies about women are not niche – they can be very popular and they can make money!”

Cate also controversially thanked Blue Jasmine’s director Woody Allen, who has been accused of child molestation by his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow.

It is Cate’s second Oscar – she won the best supporting actress award in 2004 for her role in The Aviator and was nominated in best actress category in 1998 for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in Elizabeth.

Cate wasn’t the only big Aussie winner on the night – Catherine Martin won two Oscars, taking her total tally to four, breaking the record for the most Academy Awards won by an Australian.

Catherine was recognised in the costume design and production design categories for her work on husband Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby. She also won two awards for Moulin Rouge in 2002.

This takes her past fellow Aussie costume designer Orry-Kelly, who previously held the record with wins for An American in Paris, Les Girls and Some Like It Hot in the 1950s.

In her acceptance speech, Catherine thanked her creative and sewing team and her director husband.

“He makes it all possible,” she said. “He dreams the dream.”

Strike a pose: celebrity’s favourite poses on the red carpet

They may not look natural, but these stars clearly think they've hit a winner with these poses.

They may not look natural, but these stars clearly think they’ve hit a winner with these poses.

Depending on whether they want to maximise or minimise, slim or accentuate, celebrities have particular red carpet poses that they return to again and again.

The leg-out pose is probably the most common, and Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez take it to its full potential while Lea Michele relies on it more often but less exaggeratedly.

Beyoncé puts her hands on her hips to accentuate her curves, while Anna Kendrick uses a variation of the pose to make her arms appear slimmer.

As facial expressions go, Keira Knightley is in a constant pout while Megan Fox keeps her lips slightly apart as if she’s on the cover of a men’s magazine.

Plenty of stars like to look over a shoulder and Renée Zellweger is no exception. Scarlett Johnanson crosses her ankles or knees to show off her hour-glass figure. And Victoria Beckham is constantly bending her back like, well, Beckham.

Prince Andrew dating George Clooney’s ex-girlfriend

Prince Andrew is reportedly dating George Clooney's ex-girlfriend, Monika Jakisic.
Prince Andrew and Monika Jakisic

Prince Andrew is dating George Clooney’s on-again off-again girlfriend of seven years, Croatian model Monika Jakisic.

Jakisic, 33, known as “the Croatian Sensation” and whose Wikipedia page stipulates in capital letters that she is a “supermodel”, has progressed from the closest thing to royalty in the United States to the Duke of York.

The Duke and the model were spotted at an intimate table at Italian restaurant Cecconi’s on Mayfair in London, celebrating the Duke’s 54thbirthday.

An eye witness has said, “They sat next to each other at an intimate table by the front of the restaurant and were cuddling up to each other.

“Andrew was making Monika laugh and kissing her hand.

“Monika gave him a birthday card and the server brought out a white birthday cake for dessert.”

The couple were spotted again two days later at The Arts Club in Mayfair, where he had his arms wrapped around Monika. An onlooker has said there was no mistaking their relationship status. “It was obvious they are a couple, they looked like two lovebirds!”

Australia to meet Prince George, Royal Family releases itinerary

Prince George is coming to Australia, Royal Family release itinerary

The Royal Family has finally confirmed Prince George will be travelling Down Under with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and released an itinerary for the trip.

The royal couple revealed they simply could not be away from their first born “so far and for so long” in a statement made by Prince William’s private secretary, Miguel Head.

“It’s a tremendously exciting visit and I can tell you Their Royal Highnesses are looking forward to it immensely,” he said at a media briefing at Kensington Palace.

Prince George will be just under eight months old when the trip takes place but he will not be making formal public appearances with his parents. Instead, Catherine will be hiring a full-time nanny to accompany them.

There will be two occasions, once in New Zealand and again in the Northern Territory, where the royal couple will make overnight trips without Prince George.

“One or two engagements across the three weeks have been identified as times when the Duke and Duchess might take Prince George along, too,” Miguel Head explained.

“But, George being just a little over eight-months-old by the time they travel, I’m sure you will appreciate that the couple will have to make a final decision on those moments much closer to the time.

“The Duke and Duchess are content enough to know that he will be with them in the two countries.”

Check out the travel itinerary below:

NEW ZEALAND ITINERARY

• Wellington (7th April, 9th April, 16th April)

• Blenheim (10th April)

• Auckland (11th April)

• Hamilton and Cambridge (12th April)

• Dunedin (13th April)

• Queenstown (13th April)

• Christchurch (14th April)
